friday. >> perfect weather for it, too. we will start with the unofficial start of summer. if you are headed away for the long weekend, guess what? you will have friends there. traffic in philadelphia this morning, the early bird catches the fast lanes there. aaa says this will be the busiest memorial day travel weekend in more than 20 years. >> wow. more than 40 million americans are expected to be traveling this weekend. as for the best time to leave, it was yesterday. but this morning is good. it is pretty good. so it's not too late. as far as gas prices, they are at $3.61 per gallon. that's up slightly from last year. here's the scene at reagan national airport. more than three million people are flying this weekend kicking off what is expected to be a record summer for the airlines. >> the big question is what the weather is going to be like. these are the conditions at point pleasant beach in new jersey this morning. for many, it will be pretty hot. it will be a sunny weekend. others, though, severe storms are a major concern.

45 million are under some kind of watch today and into the weekend. it comes amid a nonstop series of tornadoes over the plains and midwest over the last couple weeks. >> that sets it up nicely. we've got it covered. al's full weekend forecast is just ahead. let's get started with nbc's tom costello. where else but reagan national airport this morning. how is it looking? >> reporter: here we go. the tsa just told me minutes ago that four of the busiest travel days in history, four of them, have been this month. this is the trend we're in right now. yesterday and today will be the busiest of the memorial day getaway. more than 2.8 million or so every single day nationwide. okay. we have also got a lot of people hitting the roads. 38 million of them. but here's the good news, and we have it for you. airfares are actually down this summer. this morning, countdown to the summer breakout. nearly 44 million of us heading

out for the long weekend with the tsa screening nearly 3 million people just today at airport checkpoints. >> we're going to tampa, florida. and it is pretty busy, you could say, pretty busy. >> reporter: the busiest airports, no surprise, atlanta, dallas, denver, chicago and lax. but the faa is still short some 3,000 air traffic controllers, despite a massive hiring effort. too many controllers retiring, too many are quitting. last summer new york air space became the choke point forcing airlines to cut schedules. this summer -- >> i think there will be a strain on that part of the system with all the air traffic going on. >> reporter: florida is the other choke point with military flights and space launches. the good news, if you are booking summer travel, hopper.com reports airfares are averaging $305 round-trip, down 6% from last summer. the weekend before july 4th will

be the most expensive as airlines go wheels up, the rubber is hitting the roads down below. the most traffic for this weekend in nearly 20 years as gas averages $3.61 nationally, six cents higher than a year ago. 330,000 cars are expected to cross the bay bridge in maryland for the beach. in colorado, the state patrol expects double the normal traffic volume on i70 headed into the mountains. 150,000 cars through the eisenhower tunnel. >> we put troopers on the road who are especially prepared to detect impaired driving, whether it is marijuana, alcohol or anything else. we're also on the lookout for those major speed violations. >> reporter: a weekend snapshot of what's ahead for the summer getaway. yeah, so we mention that airfares are down 6%. europe, going to europe, down 8% on airfares. europe is a big getaway again this coming summer.

you know, guys, they're calling this revenge travel. people want to travel. they want to break out of their local communities, out of their four walls. it may be the trend for the entire summer and maybe for a long time after that. >> tom, you are inspiring me. i want to get up and leave this shot. should we just go? let's get out of here. >> all right. as we did mention, weather is a major concern heading into the holiday weekend. people from the south up to the northeast cleaning up after those severe storms. that storm threat not over yet. jesse kirsch is in greenfield, iowa. hey, jesse, good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning. overnight the skies illuminated by lightning and this hard-hit community, greenfield, iowa, where a tornado ripped buildings apart. these buildings have now been getting hit by rain. all of this as relentless as the weather continues to move across the country. overnight, a new wave of severe

weather pummelling the midwest. heavy rain and large chunks of hail slamming parts of oklahoma, the same area where a possible large tornado was spotted. part of a succession of twisters and severe storms hitting multiple states this week. in the northeast, about 50 miles outside of manhattan, an unexpected micro burst in greenwood lake, new york, catching residents off guard. power straight-line winds toppling power lines. >> it literally looks like a major bomb went off there. >> reporter: as more severe weather looms over much of the country this weekend, threatening to put a damper or worse on memorial day weekend plans, the tornado cleanup continues in places like temple, texas, and greenfield, iowa, which took a direct hit from a twister on tuesday. new video emerging of a survivor

rescued from the debris of that tornado. officials in iowa say five people died in the storms this week. the small community of greenfield grief stricken. >> it's devastating. i've never seen anything like it. it's -- it just doesn't seem real. >> reporter: kelly mitchell says her house sustained some damage, but she was able to return home and spend time delivering meals >> that's right. guys, we've got severe weather rolled into that holiday weekend forecast. you can see a big line of thunderstorms just move through greenfield. ahead of that line, we have tornado warnings moving into iowa.

we have tornado watches and severe thunderstorm watches as well with some thunderstorm warnings. this system is going to be pushing to the east today. a line of damaging storms moving through the midwest. talking extreme rainfall rates up to two inches an hour, so we could be looking at flash flooding. from chicago all the way down to dallas, texas, down to paducah, as well. airport delays, chicago, st. louis, dallas all possible major delays and some delays, detroit down to atlanta. then we move into tomorrow. scattered storms headed into the northeast. the next powerful system gets itself together over the plains tomorrow. kansas city, oklahoma city. again, a risk of damaging winds, tornadoes and hail. sunday we've got another outbreak of weather possible. tornadoes from st. louis, cincinnati, down into texarkana. this could be with tornadoes, damaging winds, and hail. airport delays are going to be a problem. and then on memorial day itself,

the east coast not looking great. a lot of rain. the south is going to be hot and humid where we have heat advisories out. out west, it will be sunny and warmer. as far as airports, if you are traveling home, chicago, detroit, new york, philly and washington all with some major delays, lesser delays. charlotte, atlanta, st. louis and boston. so a messy commute, and it is going to be kind of a mixed bag as far as the weekend weather is concerned. >> all right, al. i know you will have your eye on it. let's move to protests across college campuses as the school year winds down. at harvard dozens staged a walkout during graduation. in california police clashed with pro-palestinian protesters on the ucla campus. that is where morgan chesky is. live for us this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. minutes after police cleared a smaller encampment here at ucla, we watched as hundreds of students poured into the hall where they planned to occupy it

for hours. it was around that same time on the opposite side of the country, their own school chancellor was under pressure to answer questions from lawmakers and unaware of the protests. on the ucla campus, tensions flaring yet again over the war in gaza. police clashing with protesters, moving quickly to clear a makeshift encampment, turning back hundreds of demonstrators. the occupation only lasted hours, but followed another standoff in washington, where ucla's chancellor faced tough questions on capitol hill over the protests. seemingly unaware of what was happening at his own school. >> there is no encampment and there have been no demonstrations that are problematic. >> reporter: the university later acknowledging thursday's clash saying there is reasonable cause to find that demonstrators' activities are disrupting campus operations. university leaders from rutgers and northwestern also faced criticism from republican

lawmakers, accusing them of being too soft on pro-palestinian activists. >> a sweetheart deal and to deny october 7th. >> reporter: democratic congresswoman singling out ucla's chance lore over an attack by counter protesters late last month on a pro-palestinian encampment. >> why did you not immediately send the police that were standing by? >> we tried. >> reporter: that incident now being investigated by the university of california. ucla's police chief already removed from his position over the situation. the protest movement also impacting graduation ceremonies. at harvard, hundreds of students walking out in protest of the school's decision to bar some students who participated in pro palestinian encampments from graduating. >> this semester our freedom of speech and our expressions of

solidarity became punishable. >> reporter: and despite the quiet nature of today here at ucla, we did learn from demonstrators that they plan to join their union colleagues from both uc santa cruz and uc davis saying they will go on strike this tuesday. one of the primarily reasons they say is that they believe the university of california school system has violated their rights as an employer by turning to law enforcement to disperse these protesters. hoda? >> all right. morgan chesky for us on the campus there. thank you. the ncaa reached a historic agreement paving the way for schools to pay student athletes. senior business correspondent christine romans is here to break down exactly what this means. good morning. >> good morning. this is a seismic shift in college athletes. for the first time in its 100-plus-year history in college sports, the ncaa has agreed to allow schools to pay their division one players. an attorney representing the

athletes telling us both sides recognizing this is a major landmark settlement. overnight, a revolution in college sports. the ncaa has always viewed student athletes as amateurs, but college sports exploded in popularity becoming a multimillion dollar business and launching superstars. >> and your new star, caitlin clark! >> athletes have been speaking out for years. >> i think they should be paid some portion of money so that their basic needs are taken care of. >> reporter: the ncaa allowing schools to pay division one players for the first time in 100 years. the organization and its five power conferences, the acc, big 10, big 12, pac-12 and the sec all agreeing to pay nearly $3 billion in damages to current and former athletes who were prevented from earning endorsement money and

a cut of broadcast revenues. all part of a proposed settlement in through antitrust cases. >> this is a huge win for athlete advocates. >> reporter: in addition to back pay for former athletes, the settlement also includes a groundbreaking revenue sharing plan for future stars, allowing over 300 division 1 schools to share up to $20 million each per year with athletes. in a joint statement, the ncaa and its five conferences calling the settlement an important step in the continuing reform of college sports. attorneys calling the settlement a major landmark victory. this is just the latest major domino to fall in college athletics with the ncaa in recent years letting athletes receive academic bonuses, as well as allowing them to profit from their name, image and likeness, opening the way for endorsement deals for athletes in every college sport. now this proposed settlement will head back to the plaintiffs in those three antitrust cases for approval. it has to be signed off by the judge which is expected to take several months. >> thank you very much.

craig joins the table now. 7:17. we have some developments that have to do with scottie scheffler and that arrest. >> you may recall one week ago scottie scheffler taken into custody while driving to play in the pga championship. well, this morning we're seeing new video of the chaotic moments to court soon. new details about the golf star's arrest friday. scottie scheffler is at his next golf tournament. while facing multiple criminal charges, including assaulting a police officer in louisville, kentucky, where he competed last weekend in the pga championship. new video released by police shows his arrest in the early morning confrontation last

friday between the golf pro and authorities. this is his car being stopped. a police officer appearing to make contact with it. an unrelated fatal collision had taken place earlier. traffic was blocked and scottie scheffler was trying to get to the golf course. according to the arrest report, he tried to drive around traffic and was told to stop by police. it says he refused to comply and accelerated forward, dragging a police officer to the ground. leaving him with pain, swelling, and abrasions. a bus blocked that alleged moment in the video. and the detective did not have his body camera on. >> our officer has received corrective action for this policy violation. >> reporter: according to records provided by police, gillis has been disciplined six times in the past, including two suspensions for violating department policies. scheffler's arrest drew international headlines. the world's best golfer fingerprinted, charged and his mug shot released to the public. fans showed up at the tournament

with free scottie t-shirts. the day of the arrest after playing his round, scottie scheffler spoke to the media. >> my situation will be handled. it was just a big misunderstanding. >> reporter: describing the scene as raining and chaotic saying he never intended to disregard any of the instructions. his attorney responded to the new release of video on thursday. >> our position is the same as it was last friday. scottie scheffler didn't do anything wrong. >> his arraignment scheduled for june 23rd. he faces four charges including second degree felony assault of a police officer, which carries a sentence of 5 to 10 years in prison. his lawyer says he will plead not guilty. nbc news reached out to the fraternal order of police lodge 614. that's the union that would represent the police officer, yeah. >> stephanie, thank you. we appreciate it. all right. let us bring in mr. roker and get a check of the forecast. everyone has their eyes on you, al. >> well, look away. sunny and warm in the northeast

the east bay, where a graduation turned into a crime scene after a dispute escalated into a shooting just after the ceremony at skyline high. a woman and a man are in stable condition. it is unclear whether they are students. two people were detained, but there could be more. we're following the investigation, which oakland police tell us is still in the early stages. thank thanks. kris. we're going to turn now to the forecast. and cinthia pimentel, it's a holiday weekend. it sure is. but we have a few speed bumps before we get there. kira out towards sfo. we are looking at those low clouds and that fog hanging around temperatures only at 53 degrees. and not only do we talk about those cooler conditions here for the bay area, but if you are traveling elsewhere where there is a bit of some severe weather through the midwest, parts of the east as that system pushes on through. so, you know, now and you're better prepared for possible disruptions in your plans. chilly up towards the north bay 46 in santa rosa, but we're starting to see more of that blue coming on through and some sunshine to start our day

on him. a moscow police detective facing tough questions. >> but you didn't save your work. >> i did not create a session log. >> investigators created a map of kohberger's alleged activities before and after the killings of four college students, kaylee goncalves, madison mogen, ethan chapin and xana kernodle, stabbed to death in their off-campus home near the university of idaho in 2022. kohberger's defense tried to argue he wasn't near the house when the murders happened and was out driving around that night. his attorney trying to poke holes in how investigators failed to preserve video around the main roads of moscow. >> what did you learn? >> an attorney for the family of kaylee goncalves called the defense team strategy a ruse. >> they tried to attack the

process rather than having evidence at all. look over there, look over there, don't look at the evidence. >> reporter: authorities say he traveled south in the early morning hours of november 13th. one possible hole in the case, his phone apparently turned off for at least two hours, the exact period of time authorities believe the murders took place. authorities also pointing to surveillance video allegedly showing a white hyundai matching his vehicle casing the house the night of the killings. meanwhile attorney shannon grey says the litany of pretrial hearings is incredibly difficult. >> the families need something to look forward to. they need something to happen in the cases rather than just hearing motions all day long every day of every month. >> so we're still waiting to see where this trial will be held. >> yes. >> if it will be moved. there is still no trial date. i feel like this thing keeps going on and on. when might we see a trial date?

hiring aggressively. 1,500 this year, 1,800 last year, but that's not keeping up with retirements or people quitting the job because of stress. so this may continue to be a problem affecting airports nationwide throughout the entire summer. oh, by the way, airlines have already cut back on flights because they're not getting the new boeing planes. so there are several hiccups we are going to be watching through the summer. can i tell you also, if you are flying and you want to fly this summer, airfare is down 6% over last year. good news domestically. down 8% if you are going to europe. so a lot to be looking forward to. all right. if you are on the roads, gas prices $3.61 a gallon is the national average right now. that's about six cents more than a year ago. truth is we're treading water, close to where we were a year ago. but this will be perhaps the busiest memorial day driving getaway in 20 years. 20 years. busy times.
