graduation, but live with brand new video we're seeing of the moments before gunfire. good
11:01 am
morning. thanks for joining us for our midday newscast. i'm marcus washington. we'll get to that latest on the shooting in just a moment. but first we want to talk about some breaking news happening right now. a tough commute for drivers in san francisco. now this is new video posted on x showing a big rig on fire along the bay bridge. this all started around nine this morning. you can see that smoke billowing from that container on westbound 80. now here's another view from sf fire. right now. lanes of westbound 80 remain closed. but for some advice on how to get around with traffic today, let's head over to mike inouye. mike, we're finally seeing more of those lanes open than closed, but this has been going on for hours. at this point, it has almost exactly two hours, one hour, and 58 minutes since the report came in. the chp. here we go. here's that burnt out shell of the trailer that you showed marcus with that video, with the flames shooting up right here just outside the tunnel toward yerba buena island. treasure island now,
11:02 am
only two lanes are blocked. the fire right here. this fire truck probably blocking the view because it's very distracting. but three lanes are open, two lanes are closed. but look, as we get out to the map system, we're seeing some other cameras showing you that's jammed up approaching treasure island right now. jammed solid back into the toll plaza. all lanes, including hov and back in toward the maze. look at this backup on the map into the berkeley curve and off of the maze itself, down the eastshore freeway. as an alternate to the westbound bay bridge, which is jammed up right now. you can head up to the richmond bridge. if you're coming out of that part of contra costa county, or you can head south if you're coming in from oakland or south of there and across the san mateo bridge, which is totally clear. again, the fire is out, but two lanes are still blocked. west 80 about mid span. back to you. all right mike, thank you. while also breaking out of orange county. this is 91. it's at a standstill. here's a live look. and this is all due to a swat standoff on the roadway. there you can see the swat team trapping that blue car there on
11:03 am
90. now the traffic is backed up for miles in both directions. we know the standoff is in the anaheim hills area. it began with a police pursuit. with that vehicle you're seeing right there, beginning in corona. it's not yet clear how many people are inside that car at this time, but of course, we will continue to follow this story. both on air as well as online. bring you updates here. during our midday newscast as needed. well, parents across the bay area disturbed by a shooting at a high school graduation. two people were shot just after that ceremony ended at skyline high school in oakland. now, this midday, there are still more questions than answers. nbc bay area's kris sanchez joining us live. so kris, what do we know at this point? you know, marcus, as a parent of a graduating senior, my heart goes out to these families because this is not the memory that they were hoping for. we have been asking for information all morning long from opd and from oakland unified, and we understand that opd is going to provide an update just a little bit later
11:04 am
today. but what we know right now is that two people were detained. we don't know what their relationship is with the people who were shot. but we do know what led up to this moment. congratulations. skyline high school, class of 2024. that was supposed to be the main memory for skyline high school graduates and their families last night, but now they also have the memory of what happened just after witnesses told us that the shooting happened. just as the ceremony ended, when people were gathering to take photos together. you know, we heard gunshots and we always thought it was fireworks at first, but it was gunshots. now, oakland police say it appears that this all started with a dispute that escalated and ended with a man and a woman shot. we don't know their ages, so we don't know if they're young adults and perhaps students there at skyline high. oakland police did have help from the chp in securing the scene and
11:05 am
getting everyone away, and so there were no other injuries as people were trying to get to safety. school is now out for summer. it was graduation day yesterday. it was also the last day of school for the rest of the students. today is supposed to be a teacher work day. so rough day for teachers having to return to that campus again. more information coming from opd later this afternoon. as soon as we get it, we'll make sure you get it as well in the east bay. kris sanchez, nbc bay area. that's so disturbing there, chris. thank you. now, of course we will continue to cover this story both on air as well as online. a great resource will be downloading our free nbc bay area app. that way you can stay up to date of what's happening, and you can find that on your local app stores. well, now to a live look in san jose, where health care advocates are urging attorney general rob bonta to investigate the impending closure of trauma and other services at regional medical center. in a letter, they claim that the closures are discriminatory and what impact lower income communities of color. the hospital, announcing
11:06 am
it was planning to close its trauma center in august due to low patient volume. however, in april, south bay leaders endorsed the idea of keeping it open. we are reaching out to the hospital for comment and will have a full update for you on this story. in our evening newscast. here's a live look for you at sfo this midday. this is where travelers are packing airports ahead of the memorial day weekend. and that's because today will be one of the busiest days when it comes to air travel . the tsa estimates nearly 3 million passengers are expected to pass through the airport checkouts, and one couple says that they beat the lines. but don't expect the same luck for everyone. but i'm surprised that right now i don't see as many as i expected to see in the airport. people it'll get busy. i know that that it will. now, the number of travelers is expected to rival record sets on sunday after thanksgiving last year. meanwhile, a live look across the bay area for you
11:07 am
traffic is moving along in some places. we know about the bay bridge issue that we talked about earlier with mike, but a reminder for you this holiday weekend, chp is conducting a memorial day weekend statewide maximum enforcement period. now, if you are heading out on the roads for the long trip, this memorial day weekend, here are some maintenance tips you want to keep in mind before you pull off the driveway. make sure your tires aren't worn and properly inflated. that's not only for your safety, but also it's going to help with the gas mileage and look for any leaks underneath the car, because that could be a sign something is wrong. we actually spoke with an auto repair expert who tells us that this mistake is something that drivers make, often assuming things are fine because they don't currently notice an issue, for an example there, the battery. most people never test their battery or get it checked out. they keep driving the vehicle until it finally just doesn't start, and then they go,
11:08 am
oh my battery is bad. well, if you're heading out of town and you stop to get gas and you come back out of the gas station and your car doesn't start, you have now found out that your battery is bad. more advice for you. most car parts stores will test your battery for free while your vehicle is parked in their lot. well, here's a question for you this midday. what do an award winning actor, a basketball champion, and a rapper have in common? well, this place right here is one. the answer is bottle rock. here's a live look for you in napa, where popular music festival kicks off today, nbc bay area's ginger conejero saab is with us, and she has everything you need to know before you go. on its 11th year, bottle rock continues to grow in popularity, and this year, festival organizers are making some changes to accommodate the tens of thousands of people that will make napa their destination this memorial day weekend. last year, the festival reported nearly 120,000 attendees over
11:09 am
the three day weekend. this year, even more music goers are expected here in napa because after bottle rock wraps up on sunday, june 1st and second will also be the debut of latin music centric festival la onda. but the focus today, big musical headliners here at bottle rock. this year it includes stevie nicks and megan thee stallion. they're performing tonight, tomorrow, pearl jam and mana, sunday, ed sheeran and queens of the stone age. plenty of other artists for everyone's musical tastes. that is a staple here at bottle rock. but bottle rock is also known for its culinary offerings. there's a showcase of bay area restaurants, and the culinary stage lineup is also expected to make a splash with a splash. brother himself on stage, all star basketball champion steph curry with bradley cooper, cameron diaz and neil patrick harris, nelly and t-pain among the celebrities looking to show off their culinary skills. now, folks making their way to napa are very familiar with the traffic of bottle rock. this year, organizers and chp are trying to
11:10 am
alleviate some of those traffic woes. there will be two hard closures along silverado trail fairview drive and silverado hennessy drive and silverado. those are the two locations that will have hard closures now. hard closures will not let anyone through. it will have a chp officer, a barricade and signage to make that very clear. they're also for soft road closures on coombsville road at the intersections of davis, hennessy, lynette and hoffman, hoping to discourage people from turning on to some of those residential streets. now the doors open at 1130 this morning and the party continues. all right. you see cynthia now looking at what's going on here. this is a busy look. a lot of those folks have on shorts and stuff. they're going to need some jackets later. but look at the trees. they're already showing us the breeze that's coming about marcus. so i know a lot of people from other parts of the country are coming for, you know, the wine, the music, but also for the weather. we
11:11 am
have much cooler conditions than other parts of the country right now that are baking as far as your three day outlook here for bottle rock, we're about five degrees cooler today. the wind will pick up later on this afternoon for tomorrow. you also notice the temperature drop, but of course still staying dry. and by sunday we do rebound. those temperatures into some comfortable 70s out there. notice the wind also across the beautiful look over the golden gate bridge. mostly a gusty afternoon with that drop in temperatures. it's sweater weather and that will continue on into our saturday. waking up to those may gray skies and again, another chilly day before temperatures officially rebound into next week. we're saying goodbye to may and hello to june. i'll show you the full outlook coming up in about ten minutes. back to you. all right. looking forward to it, cynthia. well a call for a cease fire amid the war in ukraine. and it's coming from russia. our scott mcgrew explains what vladimir putin is reportedly willing to agree to. plus, settling their differences ahead for you on our midday newscast after years of fighting over finances. new details on the deal between the forty-niners and the city of santa clara

11:19 am
some good food. but the main attraction will be that parade on sunday. now here is a look at some of those closures that will be happening during the parade and festival. it includes mission between 15th and 24th, along with harrison and bryant street, and part of 24th street. and if you go out there, you're going to need to pack a few more clothes than some of the outfits they wear. although they're nice, it probably won't keep you warm. in san francisco. i can see you trying to dance your way. trust me, the weekend can do it. i probably won't, but i can. but listen, we have a couple of speed bumps, though, when it comes to planning this long holiday weekend. take a look right now over sfo, we still have the gloomy skies, the wind picking up there. you can see it in the trees, but then our microclimates come into effect and we go over to walnut creek, clear blue skies. but again, that breeze that's picking up, you probably already noticed it as you planned your day outside. it's much cooler today. it's a weak cold front. the good news is we are staying dry, mainly everywhere around

the bay, except for the coast where they could be looking at a chance of some drizzle for tomorrow morning and that may gray gloomy start to the day before it clears out into our saturday plans. but then good news by sunday and monday. if you want that unofficial start to summer, that's when we're going to start to build up those temperatures. once again. so a little bit of a blip in our temperatures for today. dropping about 5 to 10 degrees. only places struggling to make it into the 70s like napa concord everybody else is in the 60s. we'll do 64 in oakland, 66 in san jose, and some chilly 50s and 60s out towards the coastline, where it's also going to turn very gusty this afternoon. those wind speeds anywhere from about 15 to 20 miles an hour, but gusting anywhere from 35 to 40 out along the coast. so if you're local or maybe have some friends visiting, it's going to be chilly out there. we need all those extra layers. you thought you were done with them, but we need to go into the closet and find them one more time. carnival tomorrow and on sunday. like we said, you bring those extra layers, but in the dancing, you could probably just toss them to the side and making our plans for our memorial day
