because, in its view, not enough people use them. earlier this year, mmc planned to close programs dealing with heart attacks and certain types of strokes. but when it announced it will close its level two trauma center community groups joined with political leaders and labor organizations today, asking attorney general rob bonta to investigate what it called predatory practices. this closure is based on one goal more profits for their shareholders, and it's a direct attack on our communities, county supervisor cindy chavez said. hca has a track record here. the county here owns three hospitals and part of the reason we ended up buying two of those hospitals is that when hca purchased san jose medical center and alexian, they closed san jose medical center. one mmc doctor came out to support the group. now, if you look at all the studies, when any major trauma center is closed, the
6:01 pm
mortality mortality in the population increases by 29% in the next two years. so i think it is a big, big step backwards in response to nbc bay area's request for comment, hca expressed disappointment over the group's criticisms and while not addressing all of the concerns, pointed out, mmc serves about 225 patients a day and that emergency service needed to be prioritized, including adding $10 million that will boost emergency beds from 43 to 63. hca emphasized that it will follow all regulatory guidelines in its changes. we did not hear back from rob bonta, but the south bay labor council said it talked to his office today and they say the attorney general has offered his support in san jose. robert honda, nbc bay area news. robert, thank you. let's take you outside now as we kick off memorial day weekend. millions of people around the country are on the move, and plenty of
6:02 pm
people on the move in the bay area right now, traffic is looking good throughout the area, but there are some hot spots, a lot of delays on the bay bridge. you can see the lower right side of your screen. that's a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza going into san francisco. it's been a mess throughout the day. after a big rig caught fire on the bay bridge this morning, people are still delayed coming into the city. how about our weather? now? let's bring in our chief meteorologist, jeff ranieri. not as warm as it usually is on memorial day weekend. not at all. i mean, talk about a big chill out there today. you maybe needed the jacket all day long. and the number one reason why we're seeing those numbers cool off is this cold front that sweeping across. just look at the difference. we're seeing here across the bay area. concord down 19 degrees colder compared to this time yesterday. livermore down 16 degrees colder. that's leaving us with just 57 here in livermore. so how about memorial day weekend? let me show you here. we'll start it off at the coastline. we will have some drizzle tomorrow morning, some breaks of
6:03 pm
sun for the afternoon and 55. but we stay with 50 all the way through this three day weekend near the bay, 60 on saturday, 67 on sunday. and then we'll go to 66 on monday. and the inland valleys chilly 60s tomorrow, 78 sunday. that's a lot better. and then for memorial day we'll stay with those upper 70s. now, if you're doing any traveling, a look at the real time travel delays right now. and we are running 44 minutes behind in dallas, 30 minutes behind in chicago, 23 here in san francisco. i'll have more looks at severe weather across the nation and all of our bay area weather coming up in about 15 minutes. jeff, thank you. i niello here we go. the big party tonight. the big party this weekend. it's all about bottle rock, food, wine and music. the annual bottle rock music festival is now officially underway. let's bring in nbc's jodi hernandez, who has the assignment of the night live
6:04 pm
from bottle rock. jodi, take it away. i hit the jackpot. rush, stevie nicks, pearl jam, and mana are among the 75 musical acts that will hit the stage here at bottle rock over the next three days, and day one has already gotten off to a great start. see some new artists. see some new friends. old friends. great time all around. it's very fun and special that it's in my hometown. jill del arroyo and alicia prince are enjoying the kickoff to what's become a yearly memorial weekend tradition. the best friends and neighbors never miss bottle rock. the sound is really great, but you don't have to walk too far to get from stage to stage. it's very easy to see all of your favorite artists, and i also love that there's so many different genres here. like it's not just a country music festival or something. it's like i get to see all the bands i like that he was no good at all
6:05 pm
and there's an incredible musical lineup today. kicked off with pete yorn and tiktok sensation boy with uke sequoyah school, tonight's headliner, stevie nicks. stevie nicks is my gal and i've been looking forward to seeing her since i was 18 years old. never been before, so i'm super excited. well, these two marin county friends are looking forward to seeing stevie nicks tonight. they warmed up with some silent disco. the silent disco is amazing, actually. it's one of my very favorite parts of bottlerock because you can really just get down and hear music that like is from your generation and have a good time. well, they boogied outside. others are dancing it up inside at a hopping club scene. but the festival isn't just about music, it's also about food and drink. after all, it's the napa valley, so the region's most popular restaurants and dishes are a huge part of it all. i heard that not only the music is the
6:06 pm
best here, but you have to try the food. so i was really excited. we kind of just did a little loop and we decided on some lobster tots festival goers will also see food demonstrations by stars and chefs like cameron diaz and steph curry. and if folks need a break or a lift me up, there's the spa center where people can relax and even get a hangover treatment or energy boost if needed. with iv therapy. i myself, if i plan on having a few beverages, do it beforehand and then, you know, if you didn't do it beforehand and you're not feeling great after. we do have the after party antidote as well. it helps helps bring you back. now, i'm told a lot of people are in need of that. after party antidote on saturday and sunday we are back here live again, all getting kicked off tonight. stevie nicks will hit the main stage at 815 tonight and so will megan thee stallion. she'll be on the verizon stage. a lot to love here at bottlerock in napa. i'm
6:07 pm
jodi hernandez, nbc, bay area news. we should be field anchoring from where you are jodi and come. we'll come join you. yeah. sorry have fun out there. jodi hernandez from bottlerock. thank you. jurors and david depape state trial were sworn in today. depape is facing numerous state charges, including attempted murder and burglary, for breaking into the home of former house speaker nancy pelosi and attacking her husband. earlier this month, he was convicted of similar charges in federal court, sentenced to 30 years in federal prison. opening statements are expected to start wednesday in a san francisco courtroom, and that trial is expected to last three weeks. well, it's graduation season and there's increased security around oakland, around oakland graduations today after a shooting at skyline high, the graduation last night when the smoke cleared, three people had been shot and big questions began circulating about why police were not at the ceremony. here's nbc's tom jensen. reporter a chaotic scene outside
6:08 pm
skyline high school thursday night, after police say a fight between two rival groups escalated into gun violence. we do know there were, multiple suspects, but we're trying to identify exactly how many oakland pd is still looking for specifics that can help identify everyone involved, but have said one person was arrested and several more were detained. in total, three people were injured in the shooting, but investigators say all are expected to make full recoveries. oakland unified school district superintendent has also released a statement denouncing the skyline shooting. it reads in part what happened after skyline high school's graduation on thursday evening was heartbreaking and absolutely unacceptable. our hearts are with the victims of this incident, their loved ones and every graduate and their extended community who attended the ceremony to celebrate the once in a lifetime achievement. a member of the oakland unified school board also denounced the shooting and said additional security will be in place at
6:09 pm
more than a half dozen other graduation ceremonies taking place in the city today, and there will be a heightened security check at the gates identifying students, parents, people entering and leaving the school sites. but parents and a neighbor who witnessed the gunfire told nbc bay area they want to know why there was no police presence at skyline's graduation last night. they are presence, not always a great thing at the school campus, which i don't support it. but when it's necessary, i think they should consider it. in this case, it is the ceremony that so many students and families work so hard for marred by violence. you know, i just graduated, you know, i got my diploma, you know , everything. yeah, it just ended up weird, you know, it just ended up bad. opd has not responded to questions about why there was no police presence at last night's graduation, but investigators are asking anyone with video or pictures of the skyline incident to share them in hopes of identifying all the
6:10 pm
suspects involved in oakland. tom jensen, nbc bay area news. new at six tonight, santa clara county is getting millions of dollars as a reimbursement for expenses from covid. department of homeland security's federal emergency management agency is behind the fund. let's give you the county more than $65 million back fund aims to cover expenses things like testing, vaccinations, emergency housing, santa clara county representatives say the funding will also prepare the area for any future challenges, including another pandemic. we have an update now on the bitter relationship between the forty-niners and the city of santa clara. the two sides have reached a settlement in their long standing legal battle over levi's stadium. this is the latest in a string of disputes between the city and team over many years. this one deals with who should pay for police and for food during 40 niners games. the city says this new deal will give santa clara an extra $20 million over the next two years. in a press release, the city said the deal has many benefits,
6:11 pm
but the mayor of santa clara disagrees. mayor lisa gilmore posting on x calling this a loan shark type of deal because the money santa clara is going to receive from the team has to be repaid. the city's press release says. santa clara city council will consider the agreement at a public meeting next tuesday night, but the settlement itself noted that the council already approved the deal. we should note mayor lisa gilmore will be with us tonight on our 7:00 news. up next, san jose's popular bike riding doing more harm than good for mom and pop shops. the concerns from businesses ahead of another viva cal rollout this summer. also, the golden bears are going to have a big presence in paris as we count down to the summer olympics. we're catching up with the cal coach, who has helped train nearly a dozen olympians. what went through your mind? what went through my mind? first of all is they didn't care. some of our most vulnerable are being
6:12 pm
forced to leave their homes at an increasing rate. and we investigate what's behind the spike in evictions impacting the elderly. that's all coming up tonight
6:13 pm
6:14 pm
it has now been stripped of its accreditation association of zoos and aquariums accreditation commission announced today a unanimous holly voted to rescind it. the organization says the aquarium was not meeting standards in several areas, including financial stability, staffing capabilities and employee morale and turnover. this comes after the head of the aquarium, george jacob, resigned wednesday. staffers at the financially troubled charity that runs the pier 39 attraction raised concerns about him spending lavishly on travel and events, including a concert that he hosted in dubai in the south bay. now, a handful of san jose's small businesses say one of the city's marquee events is
6:15 pm
doing more harm than good. that event is called viva viva cafe, and it's happening on june 9th. here's a look at the route. the city will close off several streets so people can walk or bike to city hall, to alum rock, and then over to lake cunningham. there it is in yellow. many small businesses along this route say the closures are really hurting their businesses, especially along the alum rock corridor. business owners say the city events shut down their streets about three times a year, and always on sundays, which is usually their best sales day. we're a small business, one day affects, especially on the weekdays. it gets really slow and the weekends is when we do the sales. if they're closed the streets, we have no access for my customers to come in. my job to elevate their concerns and work with the city to make sure that as we do these events, that the community appreciates, that we don't leave behind our immigrant merchants. a local bakery says they're just going
6:16 pm
to have to close that day. council member ortiz, who you just heard from, says the city needs to find ways to make these small businesses a more central part of the festivity. merchants say though they've seen no promotional benefit, each time the city closes the streets, the cal men's rowing team is trying to win its third straight national championship next week. the program has a long, storied history, not just in the u.s. but on the world stage, the olympics and this year is no exception. the bears will be well represented in paris, and their coach is no stranger to the olympics either. here's nbc bay area's ian cull this quiet, unassuming warehouse outside of orinda, on the shore of briones reservoir, is a training ground for national champions and olympians. that's been the standard of our program for decades. that's the level of achievement of our of our forbearers. it's one of two boathouses for the cal rowing team. scott franzen is the men's coach. it's kind of the honor of my lifetime is to be part of the program. that totally changed my
6:17 pm
life. well, the team held its final practice today before heading to the east coast this weekend to try and win its third straight national championship. but cal is already celebrating another accomplishment this week , we learned nine rowers tied to the bears rowing program will compete at the olympics this summer. guys that are in our top boats now get get to train with those guys and see what that level, what that level needs to be. three are current students, the others are alumni, two will represent the u.s. while others are rowing for their own countries of australia, new zealand, serbia, the netherlands, switzerland and italy. franzen has coached them all. these nine guys were the, you know, the leaders of our team and for them to see them moving on to that international stage and getting their chance to write their own olympic stories is pretty cool. franzen himself is one of the most decorated oarsmen in cal rowing history. he is a three time olympian who won silver in beijing in 2008 for team canada,
6:18 pm
so he's able to share with the athletes what to expect. a lot of people get there and they get distracted by all the free food or the fact that you're in the village and with all the, you know, the 10,000 best athletes in the world. and that's that's a really cool achievement. but you're still there to race and go as fast as you can. decades ago, the top college team went on to represent the u.s. in the olympics, and cal won three gold medals for its country. those triumphs are displayed on boats rowers see every day. and now this program has its sights set on performing at another national championship and on the world's biggest stage this summer in paris. ian cull nbc, bay area news. don't forget, nbc bay area is your home for the olympics. it starts july 26th and i will be there live from paris, covering it all summer for you. you're going to be rowing with the team, with the golden bear. the coxswain. perfect spelling out. perfect size for us. exactly. i can see it. all right. as we kick off
6:19 pm
memorial day weekend, let's take a live look outside. this is downtown san jose. and, jeff, i'm sure you'll explain the clouds and what's coming in the next couple of days and so forth. just chilly here to start. i mean, like fall right now. yeah. it really is 60s out across the bay area. and then as we head through tomorrow, we're going to hang on to more of that cool weather, at least to start. and then we do have some warmer weather coming your way. let's move it into that microclimate forecast and we'll show you the system that's changing it up for us. and talk about a big change. we had upper 80s to start the week, and now this sweeping across tonight also through parts of tomorrow is going to keep us on the chilly side. a little bit of wind out of the northwest 15 to about 30mph. and i do see some drizzle here to start. we're going to take you all through the weekend forecast, but i do also want to bring it outside right now. if you have any plans tonight. yes. jacket weather of course with us 58 here in san francisco that fog is pretty thick. and moving back in right now over the golden gate bridge. and we're in those mid 50s through the next
6:20 pm
several hours right near the bay. very similar temperatures right now 59. and we're looking at double fives here starting at 9:00 tonight. and the inland valleys, many of us only stayed in the 60s. today we have that sunshine though, and that is making it kind of enjoyable throughout this afternoon. and early evening. 60 right now. but you're also down here to 56 by 8:00. so yes, layered up as you head out tonight so you can ensure you're going to have a good time now as you roll through tomorrow morning's forecast. the thing that will be a little bit different for us is the clouds and fog looks to be a lot more widespread. so everybody pretty much starting off with the low clouds. also areas of drizzle here to begin. it's going to be slow to clear back. i know you're going to want to get in on that sunshine, but even by 11:00 in the morning will likely hang on to those low clouds. but then as we head through the afternoon right here at 2:00, that sunshine does return. so there is some hope in the forecast here to get in some better weather. we're going to begin at chillier here with that
6:21 pm
foggy breeze going pretty strong at the coastline. that will put us down to 49 in the south bay tri valley 48. look at you in the north bay 47 and for the east bay right there at 50, temperatures for tomorrow don't really budge. a whole lot. so that means 60s are back for us down here in the south bay, 67, cupertino 68, los gatos and we see more of that from martinez to danville, mid 60s. one exception is antioch. that could get up to 70 and then over to hayward 61. we're at 55.5 moon bay 56 daly city, down to palo alto only 64 up to san francisco, 54 in the marina and right here for the north bay. 67 in sonoma, 69 in napa. so if you're headed out to bottle rock, yes, on the cool side tomorrow. but look at sunday 77 and sunny skies. and if you happen to be doing any kind of traveling, watch out. tornadoes are possible in kansas and oklahoma, and strong storm chances from the central u.s. to the eastern half of the u.s. right here on my 7-day forecast.
6:22 pm
here it is. we're going to stay dry next seven days and chilly in san francisco. but the inland valleys going up to that 77 sunday and 78 on monday. so we've come through for the end of the, the holiday week. yeah. there's a lot of parades of course on memorial day. so that's perfect for around the bay area. certainly. thanks, jeff. up next, it's about to get easier to check out san francisco's museum. we'll explain why
