between the 49 ers and santa clara. finally, over the deal that was just reached over the final lawsuit between them. but they need to keep the promises that they made to our community. and one by one they've broken them. the mayor of santa clara not happy about this latest
7:01 pm
deal. mayor lisa gillmor is with us tonight. also are there too many vacation homes along the coast in marin county? the move just made to limit them and celebrity sightings on this opening night of bottle rock food, wine and music, we are live in napa. good evening, i'm raj mathai. a lot happening as we kick off memorial day weekend. not as warm as it usually is. let's start with some of the notable headlines tonight. a fire on the bay bridge, snarling traffic for hours. that fire happened this morning. you can see the aftermath here from our nbc sky ranger, the backup going into san francisco is impacting the evening commute. this started around 9 a.m. when a semi truck caught fire on westbound 80 going into the city near yerba buena island lanes were closed as crews continued to clean up the debris. you see the flames there? take a look at the traffic backup here. this is
7:02 pm
what it caused our sky ranger over the scene. this was a few hours ago. all lanes finally reopened about 90 minutes ago and traffic is starting to get back to normal. there's also an issue in the south bay after a deadly crash on 101, a car crashed into a big rig near the blossom hill near the blossom road exit. this was around 11 a.m. the driver of the car was killed. one lane remains closed this evening. there could be delays for several more hours. again southbound 101, because the crash also caused a fuel spill. so what about the rest of our roads? here's a live look now at some of our cameras around the bay area. you see, san mateo county, the san mateo bridge, looking really good there. san rafael in the north bay looking good as well. and emeryville, okay. again, we talked about that traffic going into the city on the bay bridge, 44 million people, by the way, across the country are expected to travel on the roads or in the skies this memorial day weekend.
7:03 pm
our chief meteorologist, jeff ranieri there he is keeping a close eye on our weather. he's got some useful information, whether you're traveling or staying here. jeff is going to be with us in about ten minutes. also tonight, the push to recall oakland mayor shengtao, the group behind that recall, now says it has enough signatures to put the recall on the ballot. the group called oakland united to recall. shengtao says it's collected more than 30,000 signatures for the petition. they only needed 25,000 to get it on the november ballot. those supporting the recall believe mayor tao's policies are to blame for many of oakland's big problems. crime, business closures and the loss of the a's. she's been dismissive. she said that the leaders of the recall were losers. well, look what we losers have done. we have energized and motivated. oaklanders, the county registrar of voters, needs to verify. now,
7:04 pm
those signatures before it can go on to the november ballot. we have reached out to mayor sheng tao's office for comment. we have not yet heard back. well, here's something fun and we like it. one of the biggest week party weekends of the year. it kicked off today. it's really going to kick off tonight. bottle rock food, wine and music all in one place. yep, napa is buzzing once again. big names and big acts. stevie nicks and megan thee stallion and pearl jam coming this weekend, and some celebs as well. cameron diaz there she is on stage today. there in the blue. let's bring in nbc's jodi hernandez. and jodi, you got to pace yourself here. you've been there all day. and now the party really starts. how's it going out there? oh, i'm telling you, people are pumped up. it is day one of bottlerock napa valley's biggest music festival. the weather is fantastic, the musical lineup amazing right now on stage behind us, it's nelly
7:05 pm
up there. so he just took the stage. many people wait all year for this music festival and it really has so, so much to offer from the silent disco where people can groove outdoors to music through headphones to the indoor club featuring a dj and strobing lights. but of course, the main attraction, the bands we saw, indie rock musician pete yorn performing on the big stage this afternoon, as well as tiktok sensation boy with uke tonight headliner stevie nicks, hits the main stage and a little over an hour from now, and megan thee stallion is also playing at 815 on the verizon stage. ed sheeran, pearl jam and mana are also among the musical headliners, but right now it's all about nelly. he's up there on stage and the crowd is loving it. we love that jodi, who's out there, is it just a bunch of young people or any older people like me? there are older people
7:06 pm
out there. i'm here and i saw bob redell here a little while ago. he's out here. no, really, there are people of all ages out here, and then there are also a lot of celebrities, so people are really excited to see them. a little while ago, we saw, cameron diaz, actress cameron diaz up on the stage. she was, on the culinary stage. she co-founded a wine company, and she was up there making some smash burgers. nelly was up there with with her, steph curry. bradley cooper also going to be teaming up with chef jose andres to make some philly cheesecakes, cheesesteaks with a bourbon pairing. yum that's, that's happening tomorrow. food and drink. definitely a big part of this festival. after all, we are in the napa valley. it's a foodie mecca, so a lots to do, see and eats out here. and i'm telling you, as soon as i'm done, i'm going to go, get
7:07 pm
something to eat myself. we've been working hard all day, and i have my eye on those lobster tater tots. ooh, that looks good. okay, i'm sure there's a vip tent within striking distance for you. jodi hernandez reporting live from bottle lock. have fun out there, jodi. it looks like everyone's having a good time. let's move on. now. should the attorney general step in south bay leaders want california's top prosecutor to investigate the planned closure of san jose's regional trauma center. a group rallied outside the hospital today, and asked for attorney general rob bonta to look into the hospital's owner, hca, earlier this year, regional med announced plans to close the heart attack and stroke program in addition to its level two trauma center. the hospital says there simply aren't enough patients using the services. this is not just divestment, it's a systemic dismantling of health care access for those who need it most. we cannot allow a corporation driven by profit to
7:08 pm
dictate the future of our health outcomes. now, the state attorney general did not officially comment, but the south bay labor council claims the attorney general has offered his support. the owner of the hospital, hca, sent us a statement. it points out that regional med serves about 225 patients each day, and it's adding $10 million to emergency services that will boost emergency beds from 43 to 63. we have an update now on the bad blood between the 40 niners and the city of santa clara. the two sides have been battling for years, ever since the 40 niners moved to the south bay. they've now settled their last lawsuit, but the bitterness continues. the final fight was over. who should pay for police and for food during 49ers games? the agreement, announced last night reduces the amount that santa clara owes the 40 niners for previous police costs by about 7.5 million bucks, but the niners will also pay $7 million to santa clara in performance
7:09 pm
rent. in a news release, the city said the deal has many benefits, but the mayor of santa clara disagrees. joining us now is the mayor of santa clara, lisa gilmore. mayor gilmore, thanks for making the time for us tonight. this has been a mess for years. as you know, you just tweeted anyone saying this settlement agreement is good for santa clara is deceiving the public. what aren't we seeing here? well, i think what wasn't in that press release that was put out by the city is that the public now will be paying for the lion's share of public safety costs for the 40 niners games on the nfl side, and that is not anything we anticipated in the past, but it's really going to take away money that should be flowing to our general fund for police, fire and library services. i don't think that our public ever intended to be paying for public safety, police, fire and other costs for football games. those should be
7:10 pm
borne by the team. well, why aren't you and other santa clara leaders on the same page about this? i believe the vote was 5 to 2 in favor of this deal. you were one of the two that are opposing it. this was done seemingly fair and square. what's the what's the disagreement here? well, i think the way we look at things are a little bit different. and i don't i think you're probably all aware that the 49ers have spent millions of dollars in our small town to elect five members of the city council. so as the grand jury report pointed out last year, the five members put the team's interests above the city's interest. and so that's what i think the big difference is there. and i am a big supporter of the stadium, and i always have been, but i'm not a supporter of the public subsidy housing operations for a football team. we are supposed to get our own benefit from the stadium. so i look at things a little bit differently than five members of my city council. sure, moving forward now, are we done with this litigation and back and forth or do you think
7:11 pm
it's going to continue with other aspects between santa clara and the 49ers? yeah, i have to tell you, of the seven lawsuits, it was the 49ers filing seven lawsuits against the city of santa clara. we've never filed a suit against them. so i want to make that clear, because i think that's a little bit of misinformation out there. so assuming they don't file any more suits against us, i mean, this may be they got what they wanted. they wanted the public to subsidize their operations. and with this vote of this council majority, they got that. and i think there's going to be some backlash from our public. and it you know, it may be evidenced in the next election moving forward. also, you're going to be mayor for a couple more years. the relationship is not good. obviously the world cup's coming to town, the super bowl is coming to town in your city. in terms of levi's stadium, are those events? can they be good for santa clara? i, i hope so, and i think they need to be. i was through i was on the council through super bowl 50 and we had a very successful
7:12 pm
event and we worked it out ahead of time. where the bay area host committee paid for the majority of our our costs for that because we have, as you know, we have measure j, which doesn't allow our general fund money to be used for any stadium purposes. so that protected us. and we had a very successful event. the same thing is going to have to happen this time. the bay area host committee is going to have to fund the costs of these. i know i'm excited about the world cup games. i'm a soccer mom and i can't wait to bring the world to santa clara. i'm just hoping that the majority of the events will be in the south bay, and not just in san francisco, so that our businesses and our hotels can also benefit and our our residents can get involved in, in the event. so i hope that changes this time. final question one on one, you and jed york is that relationship salvageable? if you were in a conference room together? well absolutely. because again, i've been with this. i was a spokesperson on to bring the stadium to santa clara. and so i
7:13 pm
truly believe that it can be very successful for both parties, but they need to keep the promises that they made to our community. and one by one, they've broken them. so but anything can be as long as they're honest and open and give us the benefits that were promised. from the very beginning i was there. i heard them. may i remember when they were trying to build the stadium in santa clara. mayor lisa gilmore in santa clara, thank you for your time. have a good weekend. thank you. you too. we reached out to the 40 niners about this settlement. they sent us a statement that says, quote, the approval of the settlement. fast tracks $20 million to the city general fund and puts an end to all the remaining litigation between the 40 niners and the stadium authority. we look forward to beginning this new phase of collaboration and partnership with the city. we also asked the team about some of the specific things mayor gilmore just said in that interview. we are still waiting to hear back. up next, marin county limiting airbnbs and

other short term rentals will explain why youe watching nbc ba'ry

beautiful and expensive parts of the bay area. we're talking about the coast of marin county. county leaders recently voted to put a cap on rentals. the goal is to ease the housing crisis. the new rules will impact 18 different communities in marin
7:17 pm
county. you can see all of them here on this map. these communities include stinson beach, point reyes station, bolinas, and tomales. each community will be allowed to have a certain number of short term rentals. anyone who already has a short term rental license for their proper will not lose them. so what's the problem he? let's take a loo specifically. for example, stinson beach. the county estimates that 27% of housing term rentals. zillow lists the median home value at stinson beach at 3.7 mil, up by nearly 10% from last year alone. more rentals usually means less housing for the locals. joining us now is sarah jones, the community development director for marin county. sarah, nice to have you on the program. thanks for being with us. capping the number of vacation rentals. how would it help these communities here exactly right. thanks. we've been we've been working towards the idea of managing how
7:18 pm
many short term rentals and how much they're spreading, for a long time in marin county, but what really kind of tipped it for us was in this post, covid world, communities really started giving us a lot of feedback about, how they felt that houses going to short term rental use instead of longer term residents, even, you know, somebody who's their part time in a second home, was really changing the nature of the community. and just whether there were people available for things like teaching schools and working in the volunteer fire departments. and one thing that really tipped it for us was we started hearing from the land trusts, the small nonprofits, that buy up homes when they become available and rent them out at affordable levels. they couldn't afford to buy them up either. so it was really impacting the ability for people
7:19 pm
who are part of the community, who work in these communities, who keep them going to be there. yeah, you bring up that was what got us changing it. you bring up some valid concerns. there sarah. any pushback from some of the property owners maybe. on the flip side of the coin, essentially, why penalize the property owners as opposed to building more housing, we certainly had people who run short term rentals who concerned about the idea of not being able to do that anymore, this is a big part of, their lives. it's been something that's happened for a long time here, you know, and they let us know that they were concerned about the possibility of not being able to do that anymore, we really focused on trying to make it possible for people to do that part time, short term rental, but wanted to pull back on those full time, homes that were never occupied by an owner. and sarah, final question here as we wrap
7:20 pm
it up, is this already been established? is this a done deal or is this still a proposal here moving forward, this is a done deal. the board of supervisors has approved the, the new rules. the coastal commission, which has a say in what happens in the coastal area. they've approved it, everybody is on board, but they want us to keep monitoring what's going on and bring back changes in a few years. sarah jones from marin county, appreciate your time. have a good holiday weekend. thank you. you, too. let's take you outside now on this friday night, a live look at sfo. a lot of people flying in and out of town. jeff is going to join us with our
