[ cheers and applause ] ♪ yes, right now at 11. breaking news on the peninsula police swarming a typically quiet neighborhood in belmont. this is unfolding near o'donnell park, which is right near highway 101 near the ralston avenue exit. right now, belmont police will only tell us that they're conducting a criminal investigation. they say the area is secure. there's no threat to the general public, but the roads in that area are closed. we do have a crew at the scene working to learn more. as soon as we learn something, we will let you know. are the top story pomp, circumstance and police tonight heightened security at graduation ceremonies across the

oakland unified school district after a shooting last night. three people hurt after someone opened fire in the parking lot of skyline high as that school's graduation ceremony was coming to an end. now, one person has been arrested, but police say they still need your help. they're offering a reward for information leading to more arrests. nbc bay area's gia vang is in oakland. so much excitement for cornell. buckner's family celebrating her nephew, a graduate of oakland unified school district's castlemont high school. i'm just proud of him overall. you know, he's overcome a lot of obstacles, living in oakland, you know, it's hard and trying to beat statistic numbers and, you know, it's a lot. but tonight's ceremony looks slightly different than years past. according to vincent burton, he has worked next door to the school for 18 years. i think this will be my first year seeing police cars out here directly. i can imagine from what happened yesterday at

skyline high school, what happened? gunfire erupted just after skyline high school's graduation, swarming the area with red and blue lights. opd says as people were leaving the ceremony, two groups got into a fight in the school's parking lot. shots rang out and police say three people were hit. they'll be okay and officers did arrest an adults but are still looking for more opd is offering $15,000 for information leading to an arrest, the oakland unified superintendent said in a statement. our hearts are with the victims of this incident, their loved ones and every graduate and their extended community who attended the ceremony to celebrate this once in a lifetime achievement i now would like to invite. as for the seven ceremonies following that incident, it wasn't just added patrols but tighter security. yeah, we got checked, you got we needed tickets and then you needed your, you needed the pass the metal detectors to and bags. they were a no go at graduations today. it was apparently a last minute shift from the school district. i overheard educators saying it was because of what happened at skyline. i had to

literally, like, put my baby stuff just down at the bottom. did you know that that was going to happen? no, i wasn't aware until, my nephew's dad called, the mayor's office said in a statement the city will continue to support ousd to reduce the number of violent incidents on their school campuses. this says the celebrations went off without a hitch. the attention on the hard work of these graduates in oakland, gia vang, nbc bay area news. also tonight, a big change in the weather as we head into the memorial day weekend. it is, of course, the official start of summer, but it's not going to feel like it. not at all. no i mean, temperatures are going back to like some fall like weather. we felt some of that today, look at these numbers. the official highs that came in, we had 89 in santa rosa, concord. 88. and then looking back towards tuesday was 88 today, 65, san jose, 83 on tuesday. today all the way down to 67. now we're getting this chilly weather moving in from this cold front right here that's going to stay

with us. certainly through tomorrow at least the impacts from that. so when we get a look at the temperatures we're going to start off with some drizzle here in half moon bay. only 55 with that morning fog and chilly all week. memorial weekend long right near the bay. we're at 60 tomorrow, 66 on sunday. staying with 64 on monday. and for the inland valleys while we do have 60 tomorrow, we'll go up to 78 on sunday and 77 here on monday. so much better for the inland valleys once we hit sunday and monday. we're also tracking the travel delays. we've had quite a bit of severe weather the past several weeks, still running 44 minutes behind here in dallas as some thunderstorms have just exited. we'll take a full look at the severe weather we could see tomorrow and the rest of your bay area forecast coming up in about 15 minutes. okay. thank you jeff. now a lot of people have plans this weekend, and that means a lot of people will be on the road. that means a lot of chp officers will to statewide maximum enforcement period went into effect tonight. and it stays in effect until

late monday night. so you're worn now. you're going to see a lot of extra chp officers on patrol. now. last memorial day weekend, the chp made more than 100 arrests for dui. that's an arrest every four minutes. now, unfortunately, the holiday weekend already got off to a deadly start today in the south bay. the chp is asking witnesses to come forward if they saw a crash between a honda sedan and a big rig truck. happened just after 11 this morning on southbound 101 near blossom hill road. investigators say 22 year old driver in the honda started driving the wrong way north on the southbound lane. he then hit the big rig head on. the honda driver, a san jose man, died at the scene, but the big rig driver from los banos was not hurt. on the bay bridge, a raging semi truck fire snarled traffic on westbound 80 right near yerba buena island happened around nine this morning, which meant thousands of commuters were making their way into san francisco, were in a traffic mess. several lanes were closed

for hours as crews put out the flames and cleaned everything up. and now let's give you a look at this massive traffic backup caused by that fire. sky ranger was overhead. all lanes finally reopened about 530 this evening. no word yet on what caused that produce truck to catch fire. and here's a live look. now at the bay bridge toll plaza. what a difference, right? compared to this morning. it's smooth sailing for drivers. obviously it's 11:00 at night, two new at 11. san jose police arrested this man for allegedly killing his mother. 34 year old roger ley was detained yesterday after officers investigating a suspicious circumstance at a home found the body of his mother. this happened around 11 a.m. yesterday morning on shadow dance drive near almaden road. after further investigation, homicide unit officers arrested ley and booked him into jail on charges of murder. now, a motive has not yet been released. police are not yet identifying the victim either. this marks

san jose's 14th homicide of the year, calling for action from the top city politicians and community groups. angered over san jose san jose's regional medical center's plan to close its trauma unit are taking their complaints to state attorney general rob bonta. the issue is whether the hospital is putting profits over people. nbc bay area's jocelyn moran has more. san jose regional medical center is located in east san jose. in february, we learned of its plans to shut down its trauma center services in august, prompting concern from residents , political leaders and community groups. this closure is based on one goal more profits for their shareholders, and it's a direct attack on our communities. tonight, they're asking attorney general rob bonta to investigate hca healthcare, who runs the hospital. it operates on a for profit basis and has said it will close certain hospital services because, in its view, not enough people use them. the closest hospitals with trauma centers, then, would be at santa

clara valley medical center, about eight miles away, or stanford hospital, more than 20 miles away. well, what we found is that if you were experiencing a closure, a trauma center closure, and you had to drive more than 15 minutes away from your original, trauma center, that your mortality increased by 21. doctor renee shaw, with ucsf has extensively studied the effects of trauma centers, closing. she's also looked into why they close. she says there's evidence showing hospitals tend to close emergency services like trauma centers, more often in areas with low income or poorly insured residents. hospitals choose to provide certain services in more affluent areas, and trauma services can be very revenue generating if it's located in an area where there's, quote, good patient payer mix, meaning that that patient population has commercial insurance. in a response to nbc bay area's request for comment, hca pointed out that regional medical serves about 225 patients a day and that emergency services need to

be prioritized, including adding $10 million. that will boost emergency beds from 43 to 63. we asked doctor shaw about the differences between a trauma center and an emergency department. trauma centers have the ability to take a patient to the operating room when they need to go in the middle of the night. there's certain capabilities that a trauma center has that regular emergency departments do not have. the south bay labor council says it talked with bonta's office today, adding that the attorney general has offered his support in san jose. jocelyn moran, nbc, bay area news. the jurors in david depape state trial were sworn in today. depape is facing numerous state charges, including attempted murder and burglary, for breaking into the home of former house speaker nancy pelosi and attacking her husband. you may recall earlier this month, depape was convicted on similar charges, but that was in federal court. he was sentenced to 30 years in prison. opening statements are expected to start wednesday in a san francisco courtroom. the trial is expected to last three weeks. bay area

lawmakers are calling for a full investigation into the closure of an east bay prison, the federal correctional institution, in dublin was closed last month. eight former officers at the facility are facing lawsuits for sexually abusing female inmates. five have pled guilty. today, representative mark desaulnier, anna eshoo and others sent a letter to the house judiciary committee making a request for an investigation. nearly 600 women were housed at the prison before its closure. the push to recall oakland mayor shengtao has hit a milestone. the group behind it says it has enough signatures to put it on the ballot. the group, oakland united to recall shengtao, says it's collected more than 30,000 signatures for their petition. they only need 25,000 to get it on the ballot. people supporting the recall believe mayor tao's policies are to blame for many of oakland's problems, including rampant crime, business closures and the loss of the oakland a's. she's been dismissive. she said that the leaders of the recall

were losers. well, look what we losers have done. we have energized and motivated oaklanders county registrar of voters needs to verify the signatures before this becomes a ballot vote. we did reach out to mayor shengtao for comment, but have not heard back. one of the biggest party weekends of the year kicked off tonight. we're talking about bottle rock. many people look forward to this all year long. the food, the wine and the music all in one place. once again, big name acts and big acts all weekend long. musical acts include stevie nicks, pete yorn, megan thee stallion and pearl jam. the sound is really great, but you don't have to walk too far to get from stage to stage. it's very easy to see all of your favorite artists, and i also love that there's so many different genres here. like it's not just a country music festival or something. it's like i get to see all the bands i like now. today alone spanned several musical genres, from hip hop and rock to a tiktok ukulele

it's buzz and a lot of it's retailers. now one of the world's biggest video game makers, nintendo is moving in. here's nbc bay area's pedro quintana with how this could be a lifeline for union square. news that a nintendo store is coming to san francisco's union square prompted fond memories for people we talked with about the announcement. i think nintendo is very cool. it brings back memories of childhood and happy memories of growing up. it's a fun thing. do you still have your nintendo? yes, for my kids. yeah. yes did you ever

play them? no. not really. when we're when they were little, yes, i did the nintendo store announcement is a big deal for union square over the last couple of years, the premier shopping district has seen retailer after retailer close its doors. we talked to tim walsh, who lives in menlo park and is touring around a couple friends who are visiting from germany. it's a ghost town near the financial district. it's a little unsettling if you haven't been here in a while. yeah, but it's great if you're looking for a parking spot. according to data compiled by a research firm called coresight, 40 retailers have closed in union square since 2020. the city has been trying to attract other companies to replace them, and a few new high end retailers and restaurants have opened in the union square area. nintendo has not announced exactly where in union square it will be, but according to the city's office of economic and workforce development, it's a welcomed part of union square's transformation. this is the kind of activity where you are not just looking at things and purchasing things, you are engaging, it really is the

forefront of retail, and we're really excited to see more of that happening in union square, because this is exactly the kind of activity that we've been working to court and stimulate. nintendo operates three standalone stores in japan and one in new york city. nintendo opened its new york city store in 2005. so 20 years later, 2025 is when nintendo's san francisco store is expected to open at san francisco's union square. i'm sergio quintana, nbc, bay area news. new problems tonight for the aquarium of the bay in san francisco. that's the one that's on pier 39 days after the ceo stepped down. it's now being stripped of its accreditation. association of zoos and aquariums accreditation commission announced today it unanimously voted to rescind it. organization says the aquarium wasn't meeting standards in several areas. that includes financial stability, staffing capabilities and employee morale and turnover. now, this comes after the head of the aquarium, george jacob, resigned on wednesday. now, staffers at that troubled charity that runs the

pier 39, accused, raised concerns about him spending lavishly on travel and events, including a concert that he hosted in dubai. it will soon be harder to rent an airbnb in one of the most beautiful and expensive parts of the bay area. we're talking about the marin county, coast county leaders recently voted to put a cap on rentals with a goal of easing the housing crisis. the new rules impact 18 community communities in marin county, including stinson beach, point reyes station, bolinas and tomales. sarah jones, the community development director for marin county, says this was driven by feedback from the community and non profits that look to be able to provide affordable housing. so it was really impacting the ability for people who are part of the community, who work in these communities, who keep them going to, to, to be there. and that was what got us changing it. the cap only applies to new airbnb listings, so anyone who already

has a short term rental license for their property will not lose it. it is going to take more than just a swatting to get rid of one particular type of invasive mosquito that can cause disease. tonight, there's a warning from santa clara county that the mosquito has been detected in east san jose since early april. the county says it's found 12 of these particular mosquitoes near machado lane. the mosquitoes are known to be really aggressive, and they carry viruses, including zika. the concern now having detected the aedes aegypti mosquito here in santa clara county, makes us concerned that in the future, we might start seeing something similar here where people don't have to travel to get those diseases. but just being here, they're at risk. the county has been applying larvicide in the area, but come wednesday, plans to start a new treatment. county is asking homeowners to allow crews onto their properties to spray for the mosquitoes. jeff ranieri joins us now with a look at the all important weekend forecast.

and we're going to start it off cool. but then we are going to see a pretty decent rebound in those temperatures as we head through the back half of your memorial day weekend forecast, right now on the satellite radar picture, we are tracking this cold front just to the north of us. and as that continues to sweep down into tomorrow, we'll keep the chilly temperatures, a little bit of wind 15 to about 30mph at times. and also that drizzle for the morning. let me get you all those details right now in your microclimate forecast. and here we are saturday morning. nothing like this to help you sleep in on your saturday. after a long week at work. low cloud cover expected for all of the bay area. also some areas of drizzle. it's going to be one of those events where just kind of hangs on. you're going to want that sunshine, but we're still looking at low cloud cover here through 11:00 in the morning. and then here we go. sun expected right there through the afternoon. so just wait for it. it's going to be on the way. and even more increased sunshine as we head through sunday and also memorial day there on monday. so as we roll through tomorrow morning with that foggy breeze

moving on in, it's going to keep it a little bit chillier here across the bay area down to 49 in the south bay. 48 tri-valley low 50s in the peninsula. low 50s as well for the east bay and san francisco and the north bay dropping down to 47. daytime highs for tomorrow. really not going to warm up a whole lot, so it's another chilly day, at least for may standards. temperatures at least ten degrees below average. that will put us to 67 in san jose, right over to morgan hill, 69 more the same for a lot of the inland valleys of the east bay, except antioch. that's the one spot that still could get up to 70. and you get close to the bay. and we're at a chilly 60 in oakland, half moon bay 55. then down to redwood city 62, san francisco, a little bit blustery here again, 54 in the marina and 59 in the mission. and right up here towards wine country temperatures in the upper 60s from santa rosa back to napa. and speaking of which, if you're headed to bottle rock while we're in the 60s tomorrow, look at sunday's forecast sunshine

set of the film rust today. a new mexico judge rejected a motion to dismiss the charge of involuntary manslaughter against baldwin back in 2021. a prop gun held by baldwin discharged on set and a real bullet struck cinematographer halyna hutchins, killing her. director and bay area native joel souza was hurt. the film's armorer, hannah gutierrez reed, was also charged along baldwin back in january, and she was convicted in march of involuntary manslaughter. baldwin's trial is set for july. that charge of involuntary manslaughter carries a maximum prison sentence of 18 months if found guilty. google is facing criticism tonight for providing

false or misleading results on its new ai search tool. it comes just days after the company launched a ai overview, which shows quick answers to questions at the very top of google searches. but when asked how many muslim presidents the us has had, ai overview responded, the united states has had one muslim president, barack hussein obama, but former president obama is christian. another user posted that a google ai summary said none of africa's 54 countries start with the letter k, but it clearly forgot about kenya. google is trying to correct those errors by turning off some search results. california bracing for emergencies that tend to crop up in the summer as the temperatures rise and the state dries out. now you can get prepared with the new website launched by the governor's office today. governor newsom introduced ready.k.gov during a visit to the california office of emergency services. he described the website as a one stop shop for californians to prepare for emergencies in

now that's what's happening. tonight it was one of their stars who hit a grand slam that led to another big comeback for the orange and black. the giants at citi field in new york. fans super pumped. let's go. things didn't get off to a great start. after seven innings. the mets were leading six two. but check this out. top of the eighth. patrick bailey smashes the ball deep to right and it was gone. bailey's first career grand slam flipped the score and had giants fans on their feet going wild. suddenly, it was the giants who were on top. final score 8 to 7.
