after a man shot to death, plus a lockout at the lock up. the ferry workers who take tourists to alcatraz have walked off the job. what it means for anyone hoping to tour that famous prison and oakland's fired police chief launches his bid for city council. how he hopes to make a change from city hall after being ousted. the news at 11 starts right now. thanks for joining us. i'm terry mcsweeney. gia has the night off tonight. a normally quiet peninsula neighborhood is on edge after a rare and deadly shooting happened just off of ralston avenue in belmont, right near a park. nbc bay area's marianne favro spoke to neighbors as police search for the gunman. reporter the shooting happened around eight last night. neighbors tell us they heard

three gunshots, and then they saw a car parked here with bullet holes. belmont police responded to reports of gunfire near hiller and irwin streets last night. around 810. neighbor thomas martin describes what he heard before police arrived. i heard some shot, what sounded like shots, and, i thought it was maybe fireworks, but then about 10 to 20 minutes later, we walked outside and the police were roping off the area, and there was paramedics, giving chest compressions to a man on the ground. police say a 27 year old man died at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds. neighbors say it appeared the victim was parked in a black sedan. and they noticed damage to the front windshield of his car. i saw some gunshots through the window. the windshield. the san mateo county crime lab was on scene as investigators collected evidence. police say they're pursuing several leads and believe this was an isolated

incident. homicides in belmont are rare. one of the last was in 2019, when a 17 year old boy was shot in front of an elementary school. friday night's shooting happened in a quiet residential neighborhood just feet from o'donnell park, where kids often visit the playground. be careful of your surroundings. minhaj agrawal frequently walks his dog there and says the shooting has elevated his concerns about his family's safety. we are a family. i have two kids. i have a son and a daughter, and mostly we are out in this. you know, evening in the night to walk sparky or, you know, whatever. so it is scary to, you know, me to know that there has been a homicide here. and he says it's even more frightening to know the killer has not been caught. the coroner's office has not yet released the name of the victim. police are asking for anyone who may have had an active dash camera in this area. around 8:00 friday night to

contact them. in belmont marianne favro nbc bay area news. an update now on that breaking news in san ramon. we told you about at 6:00. traffic is flowing again on 680. this, though, is what it looked like earlier. all southbound lanes were closed near ballenger canyon. police say there was an armed person on the freeway. turns out the suspect never did have a gun. but was arrested for dui. all lanes reopened just before 8:00. new at 11. tense moments in port costa. firefighters evacuated neighbors on canyon lake drive after someone discovered military explosives. the chp, the sheriff's office, firefighters, even the travis air force bomb squad responded. no one was hurt. everything back to normal tonight. oakland's former police chief is not ready to leave public service. the new job? he wants a seat on the city council . leronne armstrong is the ninth person to enter the race for the council's at large seat. today.

kicked off his campaign with a rally at mcclymonds high school. armstrong served as an oakland police officer for 24 years, working his way up to chief. last year, mayor sheng tao fired him amid accusations of mismanaging, but he was later cleared of any wrongdoing. he's now suing the city for wrongful termination as a recall campaign mounts against mayor tao. we asked armstrong what it would be like to work with her if the recall effort fails, no matter who's the mayor or who i sit next to, i hope our commitment are the same. our commitment should be to the residents and visitors of oakland, and that's what i'm here for. he says his goals are public safety, street cleanups and work to balance the city's finances. as oakland faces an extreme budget crisis, eight other people are running for the council member at large seat held by rebecca kaplan since 2008. right now, it's unclear if she plans to run again. new at 11 memorial day weekend marks the unofficial start to the summer tourism

season, but there could be a threat to one of san francisco's biggest attractions the boat tours to alcatraz as nbc bay area's tom jensen reports, union workers who operate the boats walked off the job and onto the picket lines. it's one of the major draws to san francisco tourism economy. i have no clue what i'm in for, but it looks like fun. i'm scared. i don't like boats. even visitors unsure about venturing out into the waters of the bay, put their fears aside for an up close look at the rock alcatraz boat tours attract more than 1.5 million visitors to the island yearly, but saturday morning, striking cruise workers put the boat tours on a four hour hold by picketing at pier 33. picket lines mean no. the union's president shot this video of the strike, which forced alcatraz city cruises to clear their boats until it was over. board of supervisors president aaron peskin was there to show his support for the union workers, who say management has not

negotiated fairly, dragging out talks for nearly a year and a half. this is a working people's waterfront. it has been for 100 years and it is time for alcatraz cruises to stop stalling. we've been waiting for a response to our economic package for months, months and months, and we were told that we would have a response to our economic proposal at the last meeting. but union president robert estrada says management didn't deliver anything tangible and continually drags out discussions without movement on key issues. so the workers hit the picket line, the boats were back up and running towards alcatraz just after noon. but the union's president says a full strike is not out of the question. the two sides don't go back to the negotiating table until june 4th, but the union's hopeful management will come to them with an agreement before then. there are stakeholders that aren't directly alcatraz cruises, and we would hope that there are conversations is happening right now between those stakeholders and those who

hold the power to get this done. in a written statement, alcatraz city cruises said it's disappointed that the union would threaten a full strike but is committed to continuing to bargain in good faith to reach an agreement in san francisco. tom jensen, nbc, bay area news. so they're looking for a deal. another couple groups have reached a deal. santa clara county and a major nurses union have agreed to a new four year contract. comes after many months of negotiations. the registered nurses professional association says 88% of its members voted to ratify the tentative agreement. that includes improvements in pay and working conditions. both sides appear very happy with the deal. county executives and union leaders applauding it. the contract now goes before the board of supervisors for final approval. live look at sfo right now. it is one of dozens of airports nationwide that are very busy this memorial day weekend. and yesterday, the tsa screened nearly 3 million travelers, the most ever in a single day. triple a says more

temperatures. now let's take you out to bottle rock again. tomorrow's forecast. a little cool in the morning. you see those temperatures starting off in the 50s. as you get close to the middle part of the day. looks like 70s around napa here for your sunday afternoon into the evening as the final acts take the stage into 8:00 in the 9:00 hour, cooling into the 50s and 60s should be a picture perfect day around napa for tomorrow and bottle rock right now. 50, in san rafael, we had a high temperature of only 66 degrees this afternoon. chilly around san francisco as well. the low clouds surging back across the golden gate bridge, moving across the bay as we head over the next couple of hours. 53 in walnut creek and a high of just 70 degrees should reach the mid 70s tomorrow. there in walnut creek and also near concord, and 55 currently in san jose, ten degrees below average. a lot of the temperatures today. but moving forward more 70s inland tomorrow. continued warming as we head towards middle part of the week right around wednesday through friday. right now looks to be the best

chance of seeing those inland 80s in the forecast. good news. the breeze coming in off the ocean, keeping our air quality good this weekend. and you can see those winds all the way into solano county likely to bring the low clouds right now around san francisco and oakland into those east bay valleys early in the day. then, like we had today, clearing skies for the afternoon, patchy low clouds here near the coast and a slight warm up to those inland temperatures. but if you've got a morning run plan tomorrow morning, we're going to be back in the 40s. so kind of a chilly start to your sunday with the patches of low clouds, a little bit of drizzle possible on the coast, clearing skies around lunchtime and highs climbing into the mid 70s south of san jose. mid to upper 70s around inland contra costa county in solano county for tomorrow. memorial day on monday. still 60s bayside, but notice the temperatures starting to climb up upper 70s to low 80s inland and that progression will continue. not much change tuesday, but by wednesday you begin to see those numbers climbing a little bit more. that's when high pressure strengthens middle part of the
