you're watching the indy 500 on nbc. our telecast presented by firestone, four-hour delay with the weather finally getting under way a little bit before 5:00 and here about 6:30 indianapolis time, about 30% of the race, 34 of the 111 laps have been run under caution. six different cautions and it's been a wild start to this one, josef newgarden leading and scott mclaughlin is right behind in second and santino ferrucci and kyle larson hoped to go to charlotte and run the coca-cola 600. danica patrick sitting in first position in the indy 500. >> he had a steady start and on one of the restarts he studded the tires and had to go back down and was passed by ten or so cars and dropped down and he worked his way back up, but

mclaughlin and it's going to be the yellow submarine that takes the lead on the restart. mclaughlin back on front. >> ferrucci and we have cars high. >> andretti. marco andretti! >>ant rety global has had marcus ericsson, marco andretti and colton herta and the kyle kirkwood drive-through penalty and his father mario can only drop their heads and wonder why? how? marco was so close to keeping that off the wall and it was a slow spin and on the restart you were going closer and especially that far back on the line and you have to slow down quite a bit. he got it spun around and it looked like slowed down enough and just caught the attenuator, and the crash structure in the back of the car on the wall and just as we get going, we go back under caution.

for the seventh time today this is what happened to marco. he's right in the middle of that pack and just starts walking around on him super early and he has a tank slapper and he just keeps chasing it, chasing it and finally has to lock it down here. i mean, that's six big tail wags. >> you can see the wheels locking and unlocking and you the brakes might pop back off here and the contact with the left rear. >> the suspension's collapsed. watch how many times he has to catch this thing. >> one, two, three -- >> four, five. wow. >> at least six. he almost had it.

indianapolis motor speedway, however, we have 83 laps to go in the 108th running of the indy 500. scott mclaughlin who started from the pole position, he had never led a lap in the indy 500 until today, and his fourth try, and how he's led 57 laps today. he's had plenty of time up front. his teammate josef newgarden who won a year ago he led and mclaughlin is not holding on for anybody and here he is here in indy. >> watch the two lime green cars. they've been going at it. rasmussen and qana pin on and palou is forced to hide. >> ferrucci wanted to point out and he ran the high side. got the position and now running up in third. >> dillon: excellent job from

last year's winner of the indianapolis 500 and josef newgarden pits for the lead with 70 to go trying to go back-to-back for the first time since helio castroneves over 20 years ago. he's been dealing with a vibration and he's trying to make the car a little bit better. the front wing, and newgarden is back out. >> all right. so how much longer can mclaughlin, rossi, ferrucci go? here comes mclaughlin, here comes kyle larson and here comes augustin canapino. >> a big lockup from kyle larson way past the car there. we've seen this before, guys and a good 500, dillon, come unglued in pit lane. >> the cars are working their way down pit row and it's been really good inside the top ten and just his second year in indy
