5:00 pm
>> you had last year and the year before to look at what you had done. how hard did you work at those last laps and the passes that you made on josef before he got you back? >> i put that car through things i never thought it was going to be able to do. sometimes i said, oh, that's it. somehow i came out the other side. oh, man. it's just so painful when you put so much into it and two laps short, i guess, or two corners short. >> it's this place, isn't it? >> it owes me nothing, but just it's always a heartbreak when it's so close, especially when it's not the first time. you just don't know how many opportunities like that you have. >> how do you come back
5:01 pm
stronger? >> do the same thing again and keep on getting better and see if we fall on the right side next time. >> the crowd chanted for you here. did you hear their applause and cheers on the final laps as you were battling? >> i did, i heard it, yeah. >> you know they love you. >> yeah. and i love them. they've really made indianapolis a home for me. >> perhaps next year, it will be a home where you're drinking the milk. >> you heard me ask why does this event mean so much? why is it what it is? you just saw it there in pato o'ward's face, expression and words. >> what kept me coming back year after year, just the absolutely same desire that couldn't be suppressed to try to win. it seemed like pato had done everything right. but in the end newgarden just went bigger, bolder at a
5:02 pm
critical moment. >> you've got to give so much credit to pato o'ward. he said it. that car was on the edge. i was wincing looking at how he'd adjusted that car to try to be able to attack and put himself in a position to win for the third year in a row. he's still got the second highest points, the second biggest check, but it doesn't matter. at indy, everything is about winning. i love seeing the emotion on both of these drivers, the elation from josef and the devastation from pato. >> let's have a look at the moment of the race. last year it was josef
5:03 pm
newgarden's first. and that was something he dreamt about his whole life. you want to talk about execution, determination, precision? that was something. that was something else. to defend his indy 500 one of a year ago, it's newgarden, newgarden. that's your moment of the race. one of the other big stories of this race and deservedly so, kyle larson, the nascar cup series standout and superstar doing his first indy 500. let's hear more. >> kyle larson has finished his first indycar race. it's the indianapolis 500. you ran all 500 miles. what did you take from this? and are we going to see you back next year? >> i would definitely love to be back next year. i feel like i learned a lot throughout the race.
5:04 pm
i made a couple mistakes early there with the restart. i'm not sure what i did wrong there. i felt like i did a really good job on the restarts and was able to learn a lot. i definitely feel good about knowing what i would need different for the balance coming back to help runs and stuff. pretty upset at myself. you know, just could have executed a better race. you never know what could happen. bummed at myself, but huge thank you to mclaren, hendrick automotive group, valvoline. >> thank you. it's been fun to watch kyle larson experience this.
5:05 pm
now he's headed to charlotte to try to get in the cup car tonight. >> that interview was a few moments ago. this is live now. pardon me. both of these were a few moments ago. kyle is already on his way to charlotte motor speedway. what did you make of the effort? >> you don't have to teach the kid how to drive. the driving part he's got down. it was going to be the nuances to indycar racing. today, as simple as the pit speed violation. it was his first green flag stop of the race. it's the little things that get you here. >> you look at the entire month as a whole, it's the only mistake i can really point out. he took everything in stride. he developed over the month. even with the rest of the race, there was no other glaring
5:06 pm
issue. that mistake was made by scott dixon just a couple of years ago to lose the race. it's not just exclusive to rookies. >> the best in the business has done the same thing. everyone's done it. it's just unfortunate for kyle that he did it in his first ever 500. >> this is the stuff that lifetime memories are made off, not only for josef and ashley newgarden but their little boy coda. he's going to look back at this footage for decades to come and say i got to do this with my mum and my dad. we've been enjoying the celebrations. we heard from scott dixon. >> scott dixon goes from 21st to third today. seemed like you guys really maximized everything that you could there. what more could you have done? >> kudos to josef. congrats.
5:07 pm
that's fabulous for him and his whole group. i think we had some ups and downs through the race and we had restarts where it felt like some people were jumping. then we kind of got onto the right strategy, had some great restarts at the end and we were leading. on that restart when they both blew by me, i'm like, okay, this is going to be a bit of a problem. i was just trying to keep up. got to give credit to everybody at honda and everybody. >> what did you make of all of that racing? it seems so frenetic and chaotic at times. it was exciting to watch. from the cockpit, how is it? >> it's wild. i think everybody treated each other pretty good. it was just one of those days where i feel like everybody gave each other pretty good room.
5:08 pm
it was wild to watch. in the end when you're going for third place, you see the first two mixing it up. that's just the way it goes. >> your thoughts with that contact? >> i was already moving that direction. last moment i saw it just as he hit me. i feel bad for that. he's a good friend. hopefully everybody was okay there. >> scott dixon and the nine team come home third. >> for scott mclaughlin, it winds up being a sixth place finish. was it just a clutch issue that kept you from the win, scott? >> a lot of things came down to the end.
5:09 pm
ultimately i got a full race in and that's exactly what we want to see at indianapolis. we were up there all day, but just didn't quite have enough. >> was this one of the most intense 500s you've had in your career? >> it was intense. i was hard. you wanted to play it safe and save the fuel, but you didn't want to get caught too far back. congrats to team penske. this place you just want to steal it for yourself. but i'm proud of the team. >> impressive month of may for scott mclaughlin. he winds up finishing sixth. >> alexander rossi has finished in the top five for the sixth time.
5:10 pm
>> that was the undoing of it. scott and pato were on a different strategy. the fuel number i had to hit, i couldn't lead. when you get third in line in this package forever, it's just been very difficult to get runs, especially at the end of the race when everyone's pretty much flat out. even though we were pretty good on fuel, once you're third in line, the track is just kind of gone. at that point, you know, i was cheering for the 5 car and just an amazing effort for the whole organization and team chevy. it was an amazing month. it's really hard when you come away from this event not thinking you should have changed anything and still the result isn't there. i look back and there's nothing to this month i would have done differently. the car was great. when you can't win with that --
5:11 pm
>> alexander rossi with fourth. >> we saw you battling. what did you not have today, alex? >> i didn't have a perfect day, but almost. honestly, it was hard. newgarden, pato and rossi had more speed than us. strategy wasn't the best in our case, but still was good. we gave everything we had. didn't have the ultimate speed today and had fun passing some cars. pretty happy to finish five. it was a good race. >> i glanced over to see number ten at the top of the points standings at this point. that's not bad either. >> that's a good take-away.
5:12 pm
it was a good day. the team did an amazing job. as we started the month of may and how we finished, i think it's a great result. looking forward to the 109th running of the indianapolis 500. it was fun. kudos to newgarden. >> alex is counting the days already. aren't we all, lee? >> oh yeah. we're going to be racing again before you know it. we'll talk more about this. zac brown, ceo. josef and ashley and coda go around the track talking to the crowd. newgarden, o'ward, dixon. that's one of the top ten closest finishes in the 108 runnings of the indianapolis 500. let your eyes walk through the names.
5:13 pm
simply one of the most dramatic and skillful indy 500s that i can remember seeing. you see some of the big names that went out that couldn't hang onto the race cars or in some cases got together. james, this one was a race for the ages. >> it certainly was. you had the absolute titans of the sport battling it out. josef newgarden said it in his interview, we had the best car. but the best car doesn't always win. the driver has still got to get it done. newgarden did that today. >> alex palou's lead was only one point over will power. however, he has blown it out to 20 over his teammate scott dixon. power, o'ward in the top five. on peacock in a few moments time, can't thank you enough for
5:14 pm
staying with us all day long for this indy 500. a reminder that the indycar series continues next sunday from the streets of detroit. we'll have coverage on usa and peacock. coming up next "the wall" except on the westcoast.

5:21 pm
maybe one day they'll be old enough to be in the parade. oh, yes, for sure. families and friends lined the parade route sunday, spanning 20 blocks through the mission district. there's all ethnicities here brazilian latin america, central america, south america, and mexican. and most of americans here today. i mean, we're all well represented in this carnaval i'm mexican and nicaraguan. i think san francisco is a very diverse place, and this definitely shows beyond the parade. the two day festival featured 50 local performing artists and 400 vendors, mariachi music and arts and crafts and dancing. now in its 46th year, san francisco's carnival has become an annual tradition for these longtime friends. i just think seeing the culture, seeing the celebration, see people up, being happy, it's wonderful. i also like the celebration of san francisco as the new home base for many of these cultural organizations, and they're bringing their
