those who served, plus a carnaval takeover in san francisco's mission district. a big party celebrating the rich colors, sounds and flavors of latin american culture. the news at six starts right now. thanks for joining us. i'm terry mcsweeney jia has the night off. we are following a developing situation in contra costa county. a leaky pipe has forced 50 people to evacuate from a senior apartment complex in oakley. this all started about 1130 this morning. firefighters say they got a call about someone stuck in an elevator in this four story building. when crews got there, they found water leaking onto an electrical panel. they evacuated everyone inside the building, including people who use walkers and wheelchairs. you see it right there. neighbors say this is not the first issue they've had with this building. lots of flooding, lots of pipe issues in this building. there's been multiple units where people have had to leave on, especially on the second floor, there, the trash

chutes are closed. they're supposed to be picking up the trash for these seniors three times a week. they're not doing that. it trash is sitting in senior homes. i'm removing trash for seniors. other seniors are taking it down, it's been nothing but problems here. and, no, nobody's helping them. so crews are trying to figure out where that leak is coming from to make sure that it is just water, not sewage or some other biohazard. then that leak has to be fixed before people can return home. company that manages the building says it has found a place for everyone to stay while repairs are underway. tragic new details about a deadly crash in half moon bay. the motorcyclist killed on highway one was the mayor's son. a coroner's office has identified the victim as 28 year old joaquin dominic jimenez alvarado, the son of mayor joaquin jimenez. crash happened just before six last night. first responders say a pickup truck and the motorcycle crashed. a volunteer firefighter in the area tried to save the victim's life, but he died at

the scene. in a statement tonight, mayor jimenez is speaking about the loss, saying, quote, this is a complete tragedy. my son was well respected and loved by family, friends and the community. he was respectful and never caused any trouble. he had a beautiful heart and was a giver. he grew up in half moon bay, loved riding stories and riding motorcycles. i am very proud of him right now. a san francisco neighborhood is coming together to support a family targeted by racism, who were also victims of a house fire. you might remember terry williams and his family. we've been covering several events involving this very well known dog walker. last week, a fire broke out in their alamo square home, destroying it, even damaging the house next door. williams parents were inside at the time firefighters rescued them along with his dogs. now, this fire happened just a few weeks after williams received threatening and racist packages in the mail. among the disturbing things he was sent were dolls with nooses around their necks. police are trying to figure out who sent them.

haven't made any arrests yet. neighborhood has rallied around the family, raising more than $100,000 to help them through this very challenging time. the investigation has not determined what caused that house fire. now, whether it was an accident or deliberately set, a big party in san francisco's mission district is wrapping up right now. the city celebrating its 46th annual carnaval this weekend with a parade and festival honoring the bay area's diverse latin american cultures. nbc bay area's amigos spoke to parade goers about what it means to see their cultural heritage on full display that is growing every year. you know, it's growing and growing. from the elaborate costumes. yeah, it's my third year with dancing with samba to latin music and dancing . this year's carnaval in san francisco honored the indigenous roots of cultures from mexico central and south america, the caribbean, the u.s. and of course, the home of the world's

largest carnaval. brazil i remember brazil. mcosker brazil is so huge, like traditional. so i want to bring them the spirit of carnival. maybe one day they'll be old enough to be in the parade. oh yes. for sure. families and friends lined the parade route sunday, spanning 20 blocks through the mission district. there are all ethnicities here. brazilian latin america, central america, south american, mexican, and most of americans here today. i mean, we're all well represented in this carnaval. it's not only a chance to celebrate cultures from around the world, it's also a chance for san francisco to celebrate its own culture. i'm mexican and nicaraguan. i think san francisco is a very diverse place, and this definitely shows also like the celebration of san francisco as the new home base for many of these cultural organizations, and they're bringing their culture from their homeland to san francisco to the mission beyond the parade, the two day festival featured 50 local performing

artists and 400 vendors. i just think seeing the culture and seeing the celebrations see people that being happy, it's wonderful. in san francisco, emma goss, nbc, bay area news well, across the nation, americans are marking memorial day weekend remembering those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in san francisco today. the uss san francisco memorial foundation put on its annual ceremony to remember the crew of that famous warship. 100 sailors and seven marines were killed during the historic world war two battle of guadalcanal. that was in 1942. hundreds came out to pay their respects and listen to the musical tributes. some of those gathered were the descendants of the men who gave their lives for our country. this ship, one of the most storied ships of the naval history. we decided to go into a combat situation that was simply suicide. and they did it because they needed to save the lives of the marines on the beaches of guadalcanal. the stories of sacrifice. and this is the sort

of story we want people to remember on the memorial day weekend, as we keep in mind those who did not return home from their time in service. the ceremony was held at san francisco's lands end across the country. virginia's arlington national cemetery held its third flowers of remembrance day at the tomb of the unknown soldier. the tomb provides a final resting place for one of america's unidentified world war one service members, as well as unknowns from later wars. it's the cemetery's most iconic memorial, serving as a site for reflection on military service as well. today marks three years since the deadliest mass shooting in the bay area. vta workers paused to remember their colleagues during a moment of silence this morning. the tragedy happened when the shooter opened fire at the guadalupe light rail yard in san jose. nine people were killed. suspect then shot and killed himself as officers moved in to arrest him. the vta later closed, eventually demolished the san jose light rail facility

where that massacre happened. well, this morning, vta employees paused for a moment of silence. 6:38 a.m. the exact moment that shooting took place, it happened between the bart and vta stations in milpitas on the peninsula. an investigation is underway after a freeway shooting happened last night around 11 southbound 280, just before the woodside road exit. a mystery here. chp says a driver in a red dodge challenger was driving on the freeway when three motorcycle riders came up from behind, fired shots at the car, and then just drove off. the person in the car was not hit or even hurt, the driver says they don't know the suspects and are not sure why that attack happened. north bay police are investigating a shooting that happened near a bocce ball gym happened around three yesterday afternoon. this is in san rafael. police got a call about a disturbance on d street as officers were on their way there, they got several other calls about a crash on b street just outside the marin

bocce federation. at the time they got there, they saw two people running away and they found a man who'd been shot. he was taken to the hospital. no word on how he's doing. police say the shooting and crash were connected. so far, no arrests. memorial day weekend marks the unofficial start to summer, but there could be a threat to one of san francisco's biggest attractions, union workers responsible for manning the alcatraz city cruises walked off the job yesterday. they formed picket lines on pier 33, shutting tours down for several hours. they say they're protesting unfair labor practices, and that management has dragged out negotiations for a year and a half. the san francisco board of supervisors president aaron peskin joined to voice his support as well. this is a working people's waterfront. it has been for 100 years, and it is time for alcatraz cruises to stop stalling. that walkout only lasted four hours, and employees went back to work. but the union president says a full strike is

in the thousand homes drone video shows the extent of the damage. people are now searching for rubble in the rubble for survivors. well, this week, the man who attacked nancy pelosi's husband in a home invasion has two separate court appearances. david depape was sentenced by a federal judge to 30 years in prison for attacking paul pelosi in 2022, but a new sentencing hearing is set for tuesday. it's because he was never given a chance to speak in court during his previous sentencing. the law requires. the judge asked the defendant if they want to speak

during a sentencing hearing. well, depape will get that chance during the new sentencing hearing on tuesday. then on wednesday, opening statements are set to begin into perhaps state case. jurors were sworn in on friday. that trial, expected to last about three weeks. convicted killer scott peterson is also due in court on wednesday. he's going to appear virtually via zoom. los angeles innocence project has taken on his case, trying to win a new trial for him. peterson, serving life in prison for the murder of his wife laci, and their unborn son 20 years ago. the family lived in modesto. now, on wednesday, a motion will be heard in redwood city to retest dna in the case. peterson's new team says two burglars could be responsible. they want to test a bloody mattress found in a van the morning after laci disappeared. prosecutors call the motion a fishing expedition and point out two previous retests show dna on the mattress matched a man, not a woman. the official end of an era for social media giant meta. as of

wednesday, sheryl sandberg will no longer have ties to facebook in january. sandberg said she would be stepping down from the company's board once her term ends. the 54 year old joined facebook in 2008 as the company's chief operating officer. she's been a board member since 2012. in 2022, sandberg stepped down from her role as coo. javier olivan replaced her. sandberg is going to stay on as an advisor. she hopes to focus more on philanthropic work. tense moments in the air 12 people recovering after a qatar airways flight hit severe turbulence. the plane was headed from qatar to ireland when it hit sudden turbulence over turkey. officials say the turbulence only lasted for 20s during food and drink service. six passengers, six crew members were hurt, though they were treated when the plane landed in dublin. the airline says the incident is subject of an internal investigation. this comes nearly a week after a deadly turbulence incident on a singapore airlines flight. that

flight was flying from london to singapore when it hit turbulence that caused the plane to fall close to 6000ft in a matter of minutes. dozens of passengers hurt. one died from a heart attack, another round of deadly weather making its way across the country. dozens of tornadoes ripping through the heartland from texas to arkansas, killing at least 15 people, including two children. the fierce storms and tornadoes leveling entire neighborhoods. you see the destruction there. there have been more than 400 reported twisters since the start of may. that is the most since 2019. rob mayeda joining us now, a far cry from what we got going on around here. yeah, we have warmer weather, calm weather here. but to the east, that weather that was over texas yesterday. now moving towards chicago, saint louis and the east coast may be impacting things here locally in terms of flights heading to the east coast over the next few hours. you'll notice this as we show you the radar perspective right now out towards texas. things have calmed down, but not so much near chicago, down

through saint louis, eventually towards louisville and memphis overnight tonight. and you see that line of potential severe weather heading up the eastern seaboard. active weather continues in this part of the country, but closer to home, much more calm view stable in terms of atmospheric conditions. they got the low clouds but compressed down today, which allowed for that inland, warming the sea breeze not quite as strong. even san francisco managed some low 60s earlier. right now you got the sunshine at 60 degrees. still in the 70s and san rafael, 13 degrees warmer than the same time yesterday. and that trend continues out towards walnut creek and concord 80. earlier now 78 degrees. nice evening from out towards walnut creek into the tri-valley 75 in dublin and into san jose. more 70s around the santa clara valley. currently 74 degrees moving forward. warmer temperatures again really kicking in towards midweek. warmest days will be thursday and friday and for now, enough of a sea breeze out there for your memorial day plans. monday. we're all green where

giant mural going to be painted in san pedro square. the 12,000 square foot street mural going to be created by san jose native jimmy paints. the mural will span across a section of san pedro street, which is only open to pedestrians. volunteers are going to help paint it. that starts tomorrow. we're told it's going to take about a week to complete it, and there's a new art gallery and wellness space in the south bay. its grand opening today featured work by someone from our nbc bay area telemundo 48 family flow state sound and healing arts opened its doors in sunnyvale today. the event featured oracle readings, giveaways and of course, a lot of food artists, including our assignment editor jose francisco govea and his
