flame spewing smoke into the air. we're tracking the air quality as crews work to put out the fire that is still smoldering, and a leaky pipe
1:01 am
forces an evacuation at a contra costa county senior living facility. concerns tonight that that leak isn't water and despite a fire and multiple racist incidents, a san francisco family says they've got a lot to celebrate how their community is coming together again to help support their recovery. the news at 11 starts right now. thanks for joining us. i'm terry mcsweeney. gia has the night off and we begin with that breaking news out of oakland. more than three hours later, dozens of firefighter are still battling flames at a lumber yard that fire continues to smolder, sending huge amounts of smoke into the air. video from our traffic camera shows the plume of smoke that can be seen for miles. flames broke out around 745 at the economy lumber yard that's on high street, just off of 880. video from the ground shows huge flames shooting out of the building. firefighters say the fire is impacting traffic in the area. there are train tracks nearby as
1:02 am
well. we just learned in the last few minutes rail traffic that was suspended is now back in service. the lumber yard sits near a gas station, and the man who operates that gas station says there have been fires here before. they normally start along the railroad tracks near a homeless encampment, but firefighters say they do not believe this one started. but the tracks, they believe it started inside that lumber yard. still, the flames put people on edge. i was very afraid that come we get a lot of gasoline, got over 30,000 gallons of gas under the ground over here. we got a lot of people over here. of course, i was worried about. so far, no injuries reported. the cause of that fire is under investigation. taking a live look now from our oakland cam tonight. this is what the smoke is looking like right now. much reduced from earlier. and it is white smoke. they're getting a lot of water on that right. right now knocking down the fire and firefighters telling people nearby still even though there's
1:03 am
less smoke, keep your windows closed. let's bring in meteorologist rob mayeda and rob. a lot of smoke. is this having any major impacts on our air quality tonight? well, that smoke advisory does continue for this fire. again, this lumber facility fire. you can see the smoldering plume still there right now. earlier reports did see a spike in pm 2.5 pollution or smoke pollution right around the 8:00 hour. those levels have dropped off, but some reports across the east bay, including lafayette police reporting smoke and ash in the lamorinda area within the last 1 to 2 hours. and based on the wind directions, i think there's a chance that that smoke advisory will likely continue into the morning. you see the winds there. it is part of an onshore wind generally west southwest as we head through tomorrow morning. so you have a little bit of smoke all the way to moraga and orinda. i think chances are tri-valley maybe even out to conquer due to those onshore winds. you may wake up to the smell of smoke again that is coming from that fire near 880. hopefully fire crews can get a continued knock down on
1:04 am
that fire and reduce those smoke levels. right now, with that smoke advisory still in effect for inner portions of the east bay along 880 into the morning hours, most likely. terry. all right, rob, thanks very much. our team has been sending out updates throughout the evening. if you haven't already, make sure to download our free nbc bay area app. you can customize the breaking news and weather alerts you want us to send straight to your phone. it is a great resource to have. we now know the name of the man shot and killed in a quiet peninsula neighborhood. police say 27 year old deonte gordon of san francisco was killed friday night in belmont. happened near hiller and irwin streets, right near a park. first responders tried to save gordon, but he died at the scene. no arrests have been made. detectives are asking anyone who lives in the area to check their surveillance cameras for anything that could help with this investigation. a motorcycle is killed in a crash in half moon bay has been identified as the mayor's son. crash happened just before 6:00 last night on highway one.
1:05 am
police say a pickup truck and motorcycle were involved in that crash. the coroner's office has identified the victim as joaquin dominic jimenez alvarado. he is the son of mayor joaquin jimenez . his family shared this picture of the 28 year old with us, a volunteer firefighter firefighter in the area tried to save his life, but he died at the scene. in a statement tonight, mayor jimenez spoke about the loss, saying, this is a complete tragedy. my son was well respected, loved by family, friends and the community. he was respectful and never caused any trouble. he had a beautiful heart and was a giver. he grew up in half moon bay, loved writing stories and riding motorcycles. i'm very proud of him. we have new video tonight for you from moments after a fire broke out at a beloved dog walker's home. now this video was shared with us from a neighbor's ring, surveillance camera. terry williams and his family were also the recent targets of racist incidents, and police and firefighters are still trying to figure out if this is all connected. the fire
1:06 am
and those racist attacks, even though they're out of a home, the family says they've got a lot to be thankful for tonight, as jensen reports, the alamo square neighborhood is rallying around the family to rebuild their home and their lives. terry williams boarded up home is now covered in loving messages from neighbors, friends and community supporters, many of them attending a sunday afternoon barbecue and fundraiser for the family. i got water. he's a loving person. he loves animals and he loves the people. he's helpful to all the neighbors. flames tore through the family's home tuesday morning and firefighters had to rescue williams parents. the cause is still under investigation. we hear different stories, but we haven't gotten unconfirmed yet. the fire broke out while williams was at city hall. supervisors were discussing a resolution denouncing the racist mail he received twice in the last few weeks. longtime neighbors are appalled. people just feel free to hate now more than love. and that's what's
1:07 am
sad. san francisco is supposed to be this, like, safe, inclusive place. and then, you know, something like this happens and it's just heartbreaking. neighbors say terry and his family are like family to them. and they showed up in big numbers today, coming with donations of clothes and household goods and even money. people are asking, you know, what they need, what they can do. williams is a well-known professional dog walker and says he's also faced racist comments in alamo square park today. other professional dog walkers were also on hand to show their support. i feel awesome, man. to tell you the truth, it really does like it kind of makes me. it humbles me that so many people showed up. so, you know, i'm very proud and grateful to gofundme pages to help. the family have raised more than $225,000, and after today's event, williams says they now have the money needed to renovate their home and return to the neighborhood that they love so much. i want to say thanks for everybody, everybody who donated help my family. thank you in san francisco. tom

and crash were connected, but they're not saying more than that. so far, no arrests. more than 60 seniors living in an oakley apartment complex are staying in a hotel tonight. after they were forced to evacuate. as nbc bay area's marianne favro explains, an unusual incident forced the power in their building to be shut off. reporter what started as a midmorning call of someone stuck in an elevator at oak grove senior terrace on carroll lane in oakley, quickly grew to much more. that's correct. they determined that the elevator was stuck between floors because of a water leak or an unknown substance in a bathtub on the second floor that overflowed from the bathtub into the wall, and the load bearing wall that has the electrical service for the entire apartment complex. firefighters say no one was inside the stuck elevator, but the hazmat team was called in to figure out what was inside this bathtub. in one of the units, firefighters say it might be sewage with the electrical

system impacted, shut off power for safety reasons, forcing more than 60 seniors to evacuate. but it was not an easy process. some of them are in wheelchairs or use walkers, others have medical issues. if i didn't have an extra oxygen tank, i would be in bad shape because they don't have no generators here. the seniors we talk with say they've dealt with flooding here before. firefighters confirm that jackie ryder had to evacuate with her two dogs today. they don't maintain these buildings like they're supposed to. if they did , we wouldn't have these problems. we reached out to oak grove senior terrace but have not received a response. the contra costa county fire protection district and several other agencies spent more than three hours safely evacuating the tenants and their pets. the displaced seniors will now spend tonight and possibly tomorrow night in a nearby hotel. marion

man who attacked nancy pelosi's husband in a home invasion has two separate court appearances. david depape was sentenced by a federal judge to 30 years in prison for attacking paul pelosi in 2022. however, a new sentencing hearing is set for tuesday because he was never given a chance to speak in court during his previous sentencing and the law requires a defendant be given that chance. so to perhaps going to get that opportunity at a new sentencing hearing on tuesday, then wednesday, opening statements are set to begin in depape state case. jurors were sworn in friday. that trial expected to last. they're saying about three weeks as convicted killer scott peterson is also due in court on wednesday. he's going to appear virtually via zoom. los angeles innocence project has taken on his case that's trying to win a new trial for him. peterson is serving life in prison for the murder of his wife, laci, and their unborn son 20 years ago. the family lived in modesto. now, on wednesday, a motion will

be heard in redwood city to retest dna in the case. peterson's new team says two burglars could be responsible for the killings. they want to test a bloody mattress found in a van the morning after laci disappeared. prosecutors are calling the whole thing a fishing expedition, pointing out the two previous retests show dna on the mattress matched a man, not a woman. the official end of an era for social media giant meta. as of wednesday, sheryl sandberg will no longer have ties to facebook. in january, she announced she would be stepping down from the company's board once her term ends. the 54 year old joined facebook in 2008 as the company's chief operating officer. she's been a board member since 2012. in 22, sandberg stepped down from her role as ceo. javier olivan replaced her. sandberg is going to stay on as an advisor. she hopes to focus more on philanthropic work. well bottlerock has just wrapped up in napa the three day festival held at the napa valley expo ed

degrees in san rafael 50 now, so we've cooled rather quickly. we will see some patchy low clouds heading into tomorrow morning. 60 in walnut creek, low 80s today. about that range tomorrow. it's later in the week that will begin to see those temperatures really start to climb on up and into san jose was 76. currently 58 degrees. patchy low clouds into the morning. so pretty much the same thing for tomorrow. we'll continue to have those cloudy and cool conditions near the coast, warm temperatures inland. then wednesday through friday. that's when we're going to see the warmest days. really, it's going to be thursday on into friday afternoon. those inland valleys will have a chance of mid to upper 80s. right now, winds continue to be out of the west. and keep in mind, if that ongoing lumber facility fire along 880 there near oakland, that's going to push the smell of smoke into the east bay. don't be surprised if you wake up tomorrow morning. tri-valley out towards concord and walnut creek. if you smell smoke, it is still coming from that lumber yard fire which is burning there along 880 in oakland. even though the fire activity has come down, usually we get the
1:23 am
marine air that comes in in the morning. it kind of traps some of that smoke. and if the winds staying in that direction all the way to sunrise might smell some of that for the morning. now for the afternoon, if you have any holiday plans that will take you up towards the sierra, watch out for daily chances of afternoon thunderstorms, as we could see a lot more of that actually tuesday and wednesday for areas around lake tahoe and down towards yosemite. now closer to home, lots of low clouds along the coast for the morning. they'll stay there into the afternoon, but you see the sunny skies inland. so we start the day in the 40s to low 50s. midday temperatures looking pretty nice, mostly 60s and 70s in areas far enough inland, close to 80 in vacaville, mid 70s around san jose. upper 70s for concord, but still kind of chilly around san francisco. low 60s to mid 60s from san francisco to oakland. so now here's the progression of the warm up that comes wednesday through thursday. notice how those inland temperatures now by thursday are in the mid to upper 80s inland 90 in vacaville, low 80s in san jose bay. side temperatures at least for a couple of days, warm up into the
1:24 am
70s. but look at that. by friday . solano county a chance of some low 90s mid 80s into san jose and 80s across the north bay valley. so quite a bit warmer than the way we've been seeing temperatures over this last weekend. heading towards next weekend though, kind of like we just went through. we're going to see another cool down coming as a sea breeze likely picks up with active weather returning to the pacific northwest, so we'll get a little taste of summer later this week. and then those temperatures cool down once again, heading towards next saturday and sunday. so around thursday or friday may get closer to 70 around san francisco, mid 70s in oakland, then comfortably cool as we move forward into next weekend. right now the midweek warm ups have changed to late week warm ups. it looks like there thursday and friday, the warmest days of the week. pretty nice again for next weekend. gorgeous stuff rob. thank you very much. well still ahead great story here. a bear burglar taking over there. he is taking over a california neighborhood and he's got a bit of a sweet tooth. we're going to tell you about the one treat he's after, but who really

thought she'd seen it all. you're welcome. until she noticed some of the cars at her busy san francisco intersection had no driver. i just don't think it's very safe. california remains one of the country's largest testing grounds for self-driving vehicles that offer everything from food delivery to taxi services. but dawn says driverless cars operated by google's sister company waymo nearly ran into her three separate times while she was guiding families along the crosswalk. the parent grab the child and looked at the car, and there was nobody driving it. so, you know, they just, like, grabbed their chest. it almost hit you. yes. it did not recognize me in the intersection, even though you were standing in it with your stop sign. yes. she's not the only one. we spoke to 30 crossing guards stationed at more than 20 schools across san francisco and nearly one out of

every four, roughly 25% told us they experienced some type of close call in the crosswalk with the waymo driverless car, where the vehicle either hit the brakes last minute or the crossing guard rushed out of the way to avoid being hit. i tell kids to stay back, one crossing guard told us. another saying, i've almost been hit half a dozen times. so if the car wasn't able to recognize those people right away, what does that tell you? that they should have drivers, but not every crossing guard has had a bad experience with robo taxis. one told us they stop better than people. another added i've almost been hit by parents, not driverless cars. those who have had near misses say they occurred within the past year, but none could remember exact dates or times, waymo said. without specific details, it can't tell us what its vehicles did or why, and declined our interview request. but in a statement, waymo told us we take
