devastation in valley view, texas, just one of the many areas where tornado touchdown over the past few days, nearly 20 people have been killed in storm-related deaths, and those storms on the move this morning heading up along the eastern part of the united states. >> yeah, that weather is set to make for a messy commute for the millions of travelers headed home for the long holiday weekend. here's a look at the bustling check-in area at the hartfield jackson international airport in atlanta, lots of folks up early to catch flights back home. >> a lot to cover this morning, including dylan's full forecast in just a moment, but we are going to start in hard-hit valley view, texas with nbc's priscilla thompson, good morning. >> reporter: craig, good morning, that death toll is now at 19 people killed, and the devastation is just heartbreaking. you see this car behind me, the windows entirely blown out, and it was actually tossed from this gas station parking lot where

there were some 125 people inside sheltering when the roof caved in as that tornado bore down. so many people across this community this morning still in shock and just grateful to be alive. >> there's a tornado right there. >> oh, there it is. go, go, go, go, go, go. >> reporter: dozens of tornadoes touching down across the south this memorial day weekend. flattening buildings, like this gas station in texas. heart-stopping new video showing the moment an ef-2 tornado ripped through. >> it's okay. it's okay. >> reporter: 125 people were seeking shelter inside. incredibly, residents say no one was seriously injured. >> crazy, it was loud. >> reporter: multiple states including oklahoma and arkansas reeling from the wild weather. >> boom, like we got hit by lightning or something, that's the worst i've ever experienced.

>> reporter: the powerful storms brought golf ball-sized hail and took out trees and power lines. >> i'm still trying to wrap my head around it. just heartbreaking. >> reporter: monica vazquez, her husband and five children took shelter in a closet as a tornado tore through their valley view, texas neighborhood, the roof was completely ripped off their home. what was going through your mind? >> that i don't want to die. >> reporter: the national weather service says more than 400 reported tornadoes have slammed the country this month treacherous weather ahead, a very dark cloud hangin alone, the most since 2019. and forecasters predict more treacherous weather ahead, a very dark cloud hanging over the unofficial start of summer. and just incredible that all of the people inside of here managed to survive with no injuries, and this morning, though, there are still more than half a million people across the south and the midwest without power as these storms remain on the move. craig? >> so much destruction and devastation. priscilla, thank you.

and those storms, of course, arriving just as tens of millions of americans make their way home after the memorial day weekend. it was actually a record-setting weekend at our nation's airports. nbc's priya sridhar has more on that front from the busiest airport in the world, hartsfield-jackson in atlanta. priya, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, laura, the unofficial start to the summer holiday season weekend comes to a close many are prepping their return trip home ahead of a series of storms rolling through the plains, midwest, and midsouth. but despite that, millions of americans wouldn't let anything rain on their parade. this morning, a record-setting holiday weekend for air travel. >> i think it's pretty packed for 5:00 a.m., yeah. >> reporter: with the tsa screening nearly 3 million passengers nationwide on friday, breaking the agency's record for most travelers passing through security checkpoints in a single day. the previous high set last year just a few days after thanksgiving.

>> if you want to get out and have a good time, and finally get out to visiting family like they did, you know, five, ten years ago, before covid. >> reporter: in total, more than 18 million passengers and crew screened from thursday to sunday. though the vast majority of the nearly 44 million aaa forecasted to travel this weekend did so by car, in what's believed to be the busiest memorial day weekend in 20 years. the national average price of gas, $3.59 a gallon, down about six cents from last month, and around the same price travelers paid last memorial day. and while the american skyways have led to relatively few cancellations this holiday weekend, overseas severe turbulence left a dozen people injured on this qatar airways flight between doha and dublin. >> the plane dipped for about five seconds, and next to us we saw the flight

attendant go straight up in the air and come back down. >> this comes days after a singapore airlines flight also hit severe turbulence overseas leaving dozens hospitalized and one passenger died from a heart attack. back in the united states many making the return home today, hoping to be in the fast lane. >> traffic was not bad at all. extremely surprised. >> reporter: and if you're planning on hitting the road today and you haven't figured out exactly what time you want to drive aaa says the best time to do it would be after 7:00 p.m., and if you can, try to avoid driving between the hours of 3:00 and 7:00. that's when they're anticipating the most traffic. laura? >> the exact time when everybody's trying go home, priya, thank you, appreciate it. >> let's bring in dylan now for al this morning. skies just opened up on the plaza a few moments ago. >> just opened up. torrential downpours in new york city, you can see it right up through here, moving eastward and then we'll see improvements before more rain redevelops later on this afternoon with

this cold front that's producing a lot of severe weather, down near mississippi and alabama where we do have severe thunderstorm watches in effect and we had a tornado watch in effect just to the west of that but that storm has now since moved through mississippi. but as we look in this area in yellow here, this extends through the i-95 corridor a lot of folks will be traveling on today. later on this afternoon into this evening and overnight we have a chance of wind gusts over 60 miles per hour, hail up to two inches or more in diameter and we can't rule out a tornado although today is not really a huge tornado threat day but it is all out ahead of this cold front, and as that moves eastward those storms will move eastward as well. we could also see a lot of torrential downpours, and if a storm kind of trains over the same area, kind of passes through the same area over and over again it could create up to four to five inches of rain in some spots. washington, d.c., philadelphia, new york, especially later on today we will see some slowdowns on the roads because of that heavier rain, and this extends really all throughout the northeast for today, craig. >> dylan, thanks, come back to you in a moment.

strike in the city of rafah. israel says the bombing killed two hamas soldiers, but local officials say it hit an area where civilians are living in tents after being displaced from their homes by the war. raf sanchez is there with the latest. raf, good morning. >> reporter: craig, good morning. after a weekend of intense talks involving the cia director an israeli official says they believe cease-fire negotiations could restart as ' early as this week, but for now the fighting rages on in gaza, and that is despite an order from the u.n.'s highest court for israel to halt its military offensive in the south, and last night a major and deadly new strike in the city of rafah. overnight, fire and horror in rafah, an israeli air strike at a camp for displaced civilians

setting tents and cars aflame. fire crews in hamas-run gaza say at least 40 people were killed, many of them women and children, one of the deadliest bombings in rafah of the entire war. the red crescent says it happened in a designated safe zone, but israel says the strike killed two senior hamas commanders responsible for attacks in the occupied west bank, adding it is aware of reports indicating that as a result of the strike and fire that was ignited, several civilians in the area were harmed. the incident is under review. the u.n.'s highest court has ordered israel to halt the rafah offensive. but has no power to enforce the ruling. and israel, giving no sign it will comply, saying hostages are being held in rafah. >> we will not stop fighting for their freedom. >> reporter: on sunday hamas fired rockets toward central israel for the first time in four months, with sirens blaring in tel aviv, the idf says the rockets came from rafah. meanwhile, further up the coast,

new questions about the safety of u.s. service personnel after four small army boats broke their moorings in heavy seas, washing up in israel and gaza. the ships were delivering aid through an american-built temporary pier. u.s. central command saying no injuries have been reported and the pier remains fully functional, but three u.s. personnel did suffer non-combat injuries last week, the pentagon says, one seriously wounded. and you can probably hear the wind howling here in southern israel, that's what caused those ships to actually break off their moorings. if i step to the side here, you can see in the foreground that's one of the ships that washed up on the beach here in israel. there's two more about 20 miles down the coast in gaza. and in the background that larger military vessel is involved in the recovery effort. now, u.s. central command tells us they did manage to get one ship off the beach here in

ashdod earlier, and they're hoping to get this one off sometime soon. craig 1? >> raf sanchez in israel along the coast, thank you. to a high-stakes mission overseas, a bipartisan congressional delegation is in taiwan to meet with the new president there as china flexes its military muscle with drills off the island's coast. nbc news capitol hill correspondent ryan nobles is the only television reporter on the ground in taipei. ryan, good morning to you, how is this visit being received by china so far? >> reporter: well, laura, as you might not be surprised to learn, they are not happy about it. and china has only increased military drills around the island of taiwan, and they've specifically warned this delegation not to recognize the new administration. they're already responding to the meetings that took place here today, they're accusing the u.s. of playing what they call the taiwan card. but the u.s. officials here, including the foreign affairs chairman mike mccaul, they're brushing off these threats, they believe that these meetings

today were vital to discuss that aid package that was recently passed by the u.s. congress and signed into law. they view the relationship with taiwan as extremely important, not just to american national security, but to economic security as well. listen to what mccaul told me could happen if china were to invade here in taiwan to the world's economy. >> it would shut down the world. we wouldn't have semiconductor chips.d of hurt. >> reporter: now, the reason that mccall believes this is so grave is because if you think covid was a bad deal, this would put us in a world of hurt. >> reporter: now, the reason that mccaul believes this is so grave is because 60% of the world's semiconductors are produced here in taiwan, they power everything from your iphone to your car. if china were to attack, that would seriously threaten that production. laura? >> so, ryan, of course that's the elephant in the room, whether the u.s. would step in to defend taiwan in a potential invasion. did the delegation address that?

welcome back on this memorial day morning. the unofficial start to summer means packed pools and crowded beaches. but as we head into this busy season, there are already concerns over a life guard shortage. >> in fact, it is even leading to some closures in some areas. stephanie gosk made her way to new york's jones beach. she has some details. hey, steph. >> reporter: hey, guys. good morning. the new york governor kathy hochul was out here last week and announcing a new incentive and a grant for various communities around this state to help get life guards back on the beach. the life guard association says towns and cities need to increase incentives, things like pay, to get those life guards back on the beach. as the summer season starts heating up with americans headed to beaches and pools to cool off.

street, not far from 880. this is what the fire looked like after it started shortly after 745 last night. as you can imagine, there was a lot of fuel in there. the fire became very large. oakland fire department had called for a fourth alarm. at one point there were at least 80 firefighters out here. but as you can see, the fire is contained, just smoldering, which is why firefighters are still on the scene and people across america are remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice for us and for our country. here in the bay area, some memorial day events started over the weekend. the uss san francisco memorial foundation put up its annual ceremony honoring the crew of the famous warship. later this morning, the national cemetery in the presidio holds its annual commemoration and in our streaming newscast, we will preview more of today's events. let's get a look at that forecast for us today. kerry should be a nice day for any of those celebrations. yeah we are going to have a really nice and comfortable afternoon starting out cool and in some spots, cloudy for the start of the day.

there was a time when the phrase "remember pearl harbor" inspired millions. >> a date which will live in infamy. >> if you had any doubt that the surprise attack that thrust america into world war ii is still remembered, meet 11-year-old harrison johnson. >> it all started with my third grade project. i chose the pearl harbor memorial because i didn't know much about it. i devoured books, newspapers, articles, anything i could find on the subject. >> harrison was worried that few of his classmates seemed to know about what happened on december 7th, 1941. harrison and his mom even took a trip from their home near raleigh, north carolina to pearl harbor memorial in hawaii. >> harrison was like a kid in a candy store. he talked with park rangers. he was experiencing everything. he was watching the movie. we did the v.r. experience, and he was just so happy. >> i can imagine it all happening around me. but the greatest feeling i had

was thankfulness. there were 2,403 people who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. >> when he got home, harrison told his parents he wanted to raise money to support educational programs for the memorial. he had a very specific target figure in mind. you said to your mom and dad, hey, i want to raise $100,000? >> yes. >> what did they say? >> they initially asked me to go for a smaller amount like $1,000. but i told them about my idea, how you can do anything you set your mind to, and they eventually agreed. >> so he started going door to door in his neighborhood asking for funds. he also held events at restaurants and a golf club. okay, his parents helped him a bit. they had to. harrison was so good at fund-raising, he needed support. they helped him partner with a park which manages educational programs at the memorial. the organization created a web

page called harrison's heroes, where people could donate online, and things took off from there. two years later -- how much have you raised? >> i have raised $98,296. $1,704 to go. >> you heard right. when we spoke, harrison was less his mom says he deserves all the credit. >> this has been all harrison? >> 100% all harrison because we're both busy. i'm just not comfortable asking for money, but harrison gives it right up, gives presentations to business leaders. than $2,000 away from his goal. >> parents who are watching who might have a son or daughter who is kind of curious, what would you say to them? >> what he said. what about what is possible? what about you can do anything and really believe that? it is not just lip service. it is actually the truth. >> after our conversation, harrison showed me some of his pearl harbor books and

and, you know, it's -- what does it take? what does one need to do to become their best self? i think it is true for the adults in the movie and kids. we are used to seeing coming of age stories from the kids' perspective. in this story, the child and in his case, a child with special needs, really sort of points the way for his parents and for the adults around him to be much more accepting of the world that we're all expected to live in. you know, i think -- i think there was a time when these kinds of stories weren't told. >> yes. >> people didn't hear stories about neuro diverse people, much less children. i think it is a special story with a special actor in william fitzgerald. >> william fitzgerald, this kid from jersey that you guys cast in sort of this main role and there are a couple of scenes, no offense to you, bobby, he steals them. a scene in the woods, i got a little choked up. >> he's amazing. >> what was it like working with him?

>> truly wonderful. took us a long time to find this boy. we were very committed to finding a child on the autism spectrum, and we found him right across the river in new jersey. and as soon as he came in i knew i could spend a lot of time with him, he's extremely with de niro, and he's not overly impressed with bob's work, with bob's history, let's say. so he's very comfortable on set. i don't know where he gets that from. two great parents, dave and laur laura fitzgerald, and they've raised a wondering man. >> de niro, i know he's an idol of yours. you worked with him once before. what's it like working with a hero? what's that dynamic like? he plays your father in this film. >> working with these guys you have to, in a sense, throw -- ignore all of that, or otherwise they'll just eat you up on screen. i've worked with al pacino and bob for a second time.

english seaside where they are making fish and chips the old-fashioned way. with wish that comes straight from the boat on to the fryer into cafes all along the beach. now this beloved dish is under threat. ♪ >> reporter: in the seaside town of hastings, england, fishing has been the way of life for more than a thousand years. er every morning, the boat sets sail to harvest the key ingredient for britain's most iconic meal, good old fish and chips. now this dish is at risk, threatening the livelihoods of these people. >> my family has been fishing here for generations. it's got worse and worse over the years. there is no fish out there. >> reporter: terry had to ramp up her prices. fish that used to sell a couple of bucks per bag, now go for a couple of bucks per fish. these towns are being squeezed by a cost of living crisis that hit fish and chip shops
