strangely, confronting and threatening people, even injuring a police dog. much of the incident was caught on tape, and nbc bay area's robert hunter reports in sunnyvale. officers here at sunnyvale public safety acknowledge this is a very unusual case. and as you'll see, watching the behavior on tape only raises more questions. the postal worker with his vehicle nearby was apparently making his mail rounds on corraleros avenue last wednesday, when he suddenly walked into the middle of the street and began talking out loud, at first seemingly to himself. a couple driving down the street stopped. when they say they couldn't get around him, then started shooting video with their phone cameras from a distance. when the postal carrier turned his attention on them, the husband and wife asked not to be identified because they say they are scared of the mail carrier. he kept pointing at me saying he was going to shoot me, shoot my wife, and, shoot everybody in the car basically. so i started getting scared. he kept reaching into

his pocket at the same time with his other handicapped, like making gestures that he's going to shoot me. the man says. the mail carrier got more and more agitated and started using racial insults. are you saying basically that i don't belong here, saying that he's going to shoot me? they go back to my country, go collect welfare, you know, and whatnot? just crazy remarks. i never seen this man before in my life. officers arrived and removed the couple from the scene. the public safety department confirms the postal carrier made similar threats and gestures at police, then tried to flee. officials say after talks failed, they sent a canine officer but say the mail carrier injured that dog with pepper spray. a neighbor shot this photo of the mail carrier face down on the ground as officers arrested him on a felony charge of making criminal threats and two misdemeanor charges of obstructing a police officer and harming a police canine. he did not have a weapon except for the pepper spray. the woman involved says she's still rattled by the incident. i did take his threats

very seriously and i was afraid because i had never been treated like that before by anyone, especially not postal worker in my neighborhood. since the mail carrier was classified as a mental health case. sunnyvale public safety says he would have been detained for up to 72 hours for psychiatric hospitalization. so, as is typical in these cases, very few details have been released on his current status. we reached out to the u.s. postal service but did not get a response in sunnyvale. robert honda, nbc, bay area news. we are following developing news in north san jose. we could tell you that all lanes of westbound montague expressway are still closed from 880 to mccarthy boulevard. authorities are investigating their clearing as well after a crash that killed one man. you can see that the car he was driving smashed into the back of a box truck. we don't know what led up to this crash or how long that section of montague

expressway will be closed. more than 60 seniors in oakley are staying another night at a hotel after evacuating their apartments yesterday. management said today that they're working to get everyone back home by late tomorrow or wednesday, but that may be overly optimistic. 44 units had to be evacuated after a clogged pipe sent sewage overflowing into vacant apartments near the elevator controls that knocked out the power in the elevator. oakley's mayor says once it's all repaired, agencies will still need to inspect and then give the all clear for the residents to get back in. that could mean even more time for everyone before they can go back. today, some residents return to pick up necessities like clothing and medication that they didn't have time to grab before being evacuated yesterday. he fixed it where i could go in and get my medication this morning. where yesterday they were saying, no, no, no, no, no. they did their job yesterday they went out of their way and they were just over apologetic for this situation. spokesperson for the apartment says all displaced residents are being put up in three nearby hotels free of

french embassy in washington, d.c. they had ten veterans there. one was 104. he was from baltimore, so we had a lot in common to talk about 104. there were several 102, 97 and the rest all so proud, so patriotic. several people showed up to the ceremony with bouquets of flowers to lay near individual tombstones, and the remembrance in san francisco was just one of a number of memorial day events around the bay area. today. one bay area town did something a little different to remember those who fallen this year. here's nbc bay area's ian cull. at civic park in walnut creek, hundreds of veterans and civilians joined to remember family members and friends who died too young. after patriotic music in the national anthem, city leaders spoke about locals who died for their country. 32 men of our community lost their lives in world war 211. we lost

reflect on on how fortunate we were to have our family members come home, but not but not all did. of course. the girl scouts provided flags for people like rebecca johnson to stick in the ground. the current service member planted hers with messages for loved ones, ensuring they'll never be forgotten. and then in afghanistan, there was an attack on an armored bus from our base that was taking soldiers and civilians and killed everyone instantly. and so since then, memorial day has even been more of more important to me. for all those attending memorial day means a whole lot more than barbecues and a three day weekend. it's a solemn day to remember those who protected america with their lives. ian cull nbc, bay area news. there was also a special ceremony today to honor fallen soldiers at the uss hornet sea, air and
