air travel safe? their answers may surprise you. here's nbc's terry mcsweeney. images like these can be enough to induce anxiety in some air travelers. this from a singapore airlines jet that hid severe air turbulence. more than 100 people injured, one dead from a heart attack. dozens injured by the same problem on a cutter. airlines flight. it's no wonder in focus groups, we are hearing more people say, you know, i am more anxious about flying. part of the cause of the estimated 20% increase in planes experiencing extreme turbulence is climate change destabilizing the jet stream? there is the thought that we're going to see more and more severe turbulence like that, just because of the jet stream is essentially getting supercharged by climate change. and this increase in temperatures that we're seeing, it's not just turbulence causing anxiety in the air. boeing, the leading manufacturer of commercial jetliners, is contributing as well. people are anxious about the 737 max, and

that's where i hear it. the most . they are just concerned about that plane safety. still, the two experts agree the faa has successfully addressed the recent pilot shortage and is now working on an air traffic controller shortage. we talked to some folks at sfo this evening. you're worried about turbulence at all? i do after the recent news about what happened. and, so that did give me it can be scary a little bit. you just got to keep your seatbelt on and, i've traveled enough to know just, you know, you can weather through it, and the pilots know what they're doing. and from our experts comes some good news. technology is being developed that will allow pilots to detect clear air turbulence, the kind that currently can't see, the kind that's been causing many of those problems. by using technologies such as components of artificial intelligence, as well as other technologies to look at weather systems, look at wind patterns, and more, and then say, okay, there's a

likelihood that there's clear air turbulence here. avoid it. the fact is that air travel is safer than it's ever been before. 2023 was the safest year in the history of aviation for air travel at sfo. terry mcsweeney, nbc bay area news. well, here's something fun oakland as you might know, already has a new baseball team. the a's are on their way out, but the ballers are on their way in. the ballers are also popular, and they haven't even played a game in oakland yet tonight, the team announced its inaugural home opener is sold out. the game is next tuesday night at raymond park in west oakland. it's being renovated as we speak. it's the ballers versus the yolo high wheelers. this is independent minor league baseball. despite being sold out right now, the team says more tickets may become available and there's other games next week as well, so you might want to grab those before they're gone too. but it's really a good community , organic team here that a lot of people are going to get behind in west oakland sold out.
