tv   Today in the Bay  NBC  May 29, 2024 5:00am-6:01am PDT

5:00 am
good morning. i'm laura garcia, and i'm marcus washington. we begin this morning with breaking
5:01 am
news. it is already shaping up to be a hectic morning for the commute in the south bay, a big rollover. this is on the critical connector ramp and the cleanup may take some time. today in the bay bob redell is live at the scene. bob. this is where 101 meets 880 heading north in san jose. you can see all the lights behind you. correct. out. so we are on the connector ramp from northbound 101 to southbound 880, which is shut down. and also right next to it is the connector ramp from northbound 880 to northbound 101 shut down because of this right here. this is a big rig that overturned a couple of hours ago. it is loaded with about 40 to 50,000 pounds of strawberries . i did speak with chp and the person who's running the operation over turnus with the wrecking crew. they are hoping, depending on how this overturn goes right now, where they try to write it up, they are hoping to maybe have this reopen within the next 30 to 60 minutes. but
5:02 am
again, it's going to depend on what happens when this wrecking crew overturns this big rig, this was a solo vehicle accident. i spoke briefly with the driver. he didn't speak english, but he was fine. he chp believes he's probably going too fast when he overturned here on the connector ramp. so again, the issue is trying to get the truck upright without it breaking. there was some minor fuel spillage, but i don't think that's something that would be extending the shutdown any more than, you know, a few minutes or so. so again, we are talking about the northbound 101 connector ramp to southbound 880. i think it said northbound 80 before. so this is the northbound 101 connector ramp to southbound 880 is shut down, as is the northbound 880 connector ramp to northbound 101. the estimated time of reopening. if everything goes okay, right here behind me, another 30 to 60 minutes. and what you can't see behind you is northbound 101.
5:03 am
the morning commute is starting. it is at the limit, and this so far does not seem to be having any impact in terms of people slowing down because of looky loos and that sort of thing. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell today in the bay. well, that's good. and thankfully the driver was okay too. thanks, bob. all right, let's head over to mike inouye. of course, he's tracking that backup. surely going to cause a little pause there for some drivers out there. mike. that will be an issue right now. the spectacle is. all the lights you see here is northbound 101. that's what bob was talking about. this shot, as folks know, is critical to showing where the commute is building and when it's building in san jose. easy drive at the limit just north of two the 8680 interchange. bob talked about a little bit different. the setup here, north 101 getting on to 880. he said to 880 south. i do know that the connector to that area is closed. folks will get off to the area and usually take oakland road or 10th. that can get you around that, but you'll have to get on from the southbound side of 101. so there's a little surface street traffic wiggling. you'll have to do again that connector, though,
5:04 am
from north 101 to 880. watch both directions. they may have to shut them down at times because of that rig that has to be lifted up. we're hoping they can pick that rig up without tearing, without the payload tearing through the sides of the rig, which are pretty thin. so we'll watch for progress there. your alternates, if you're looking forward in a few minutes, we're looking at 680. we'll see more traffic. and 280 to 87 will see more traffic that will continue with the bigger build. so we'll watch that. we'll see. so far things are pretty calm there as well as the rest of the bay. but carry that's going to be an issue for the south bay. how's that weather looking? it looks great starting out this morning. temperatures in the mid 50s. so across the bay area we're at 56 in san jose, 55 in palo alto, and we're down to about 50 in oakland. as you're heading out the door, we're going to see temperatures today just slightly warmer compared to yesterday and not as much wind, but it will still be breezy at times as martinez will see a high of 82 degrees. it will be nice and sunny, 77 in oakland, and we'll be in the upper 70s and low 80s for much of the south bay. we'll
5:05 am
take a look ahead to a significant warm up coming our way for tomorrow and thursday or friday. that's coming up in just a few minutes. back to you. thanks, carrie. well, new developments this morning out of the middle east. this is where israeli leaders now saying that there is a new cease fire proposal on the table. a government insider telling nbc israel submitted the new proposal to mediators monday. it offers what describes as a, quote, sustainable, calm but not a complete end to the war as demanded by hamas. now, hamas leaders tell nbc there's no new proposal. meanwhile, israeli forces are moving for the first time into rafah city center. it comes after the weekend airstrike that killed dozens of palestinians in the refugee camp, developing right now just south of the bay area, there is a manhunt underway for an escaped inmate. deputies say danielle lopez zavala escaped a little more than 24 hours ago from san benito county jail in hollister. jail staff saw him
5:06 am
jumping a barbed wire fence. some of his jail garb was later discovered in an open field. it's believed he may have left the area by car. the sheriff calls him a known gang member with an extensive criminal history, who had not yet been sentenced for his latest crime. we don't have any reason to believe that he's going to go do anything specific in this community other than try to get away from it. the sheriff also blames the escape on a lack of staffing. he says he lacks the manpower to properly oversee video surveillance, and his team could not set up a perimeter after the escape happening today, convicted murderer scott peterson will appear virtually in a hearing on his legal team's attempt to win a new criminal trial. peterson, now confined to mule creek state prison near sacramento. he's serving life in prison for the murder of his wife, laci, and their unborn son , connor. 20 years ago, attorneys for la's innocence project filed motions requesting new dna testing on evidence gathered during the murder
5:07 am
investigation. that includes a mattress found inside a burned out van found near peterson's modesto home. our ginger conejero saab is following those developments. she'll have a live report in our next half hour. well, after weeks of squaring off inside the courtroom, the prosecution and defense presented their closing arguments in the historic hush money trial of former president donald trump. now a jury must decide whether he orchestrated a criminal conspiracy designed to influence the 2016 presidential election. today, in the bay's brie jackson joins us live from washington this morning. so what can we expect in court today? it's going to go to the jury. yeah that's right. good morning laura. so first, this morning, judge juan merchan plans to spend about an hour or so giving instructions to the jury. after much deliberation, asians can begin. did former president trump falsify business records in alleged hush money payments to adult film actress stormy daniels? is the question jurors will consider during closing
5:08 am
arguments. the defense placed the blame on former trump attorney michael cohen, calling him the gloat. the greatest liar of all time. if michael cohen is the mvp of liars, then donald trump was coach of the year, prosecutor argue former president trump orchestrated a criminal conspiracy to influence the 2016 election. he denies any wrongdoing. a lot of people are going to be very upset, but this is all election hunting, election interfering for the first time, the biden campaign spoke outside the courthouse, sending a dire warning to voters of the unique, persistent and growing threat that donald trump poses to the american people and to our democracy, a concern echoed by actor robert de niro. he appeared in an ad for president biden and was joined by officers who helped protect the u.s. capitol on january 6th. i love this city. i don't want to destroy it. donald trump wants to destroy not only the
5:09 am
city, but the country. and eventually he could destroy the world. trump's supporters blasted his political opponents and the cases against him. they're making a political mockery of this entire thing. there are real problems in america, and you are all out here covering this because joe biden is weak. he's pathetic. it will be up to a jury to decide trump's fate. enduring jury deliberations. jurors will discuss the 34 counts of falsifying business records facing former president trump. laura. all right. so much to follow. we'll see how it goes. thank you very much. brie well, former president trump is coming to the bay area in search of big money. trump is scheduled to be in san francisco thursday, june sixth. he is set to attend a fundraiser held by two coho hosts of the all in podcast. now, tickets start at $50,000, and vice president kamala harris
5:10 am
also has fundraising stops in the bay area. two are scheduled for a week from today. one is at a large venue near manny's in san francisco's mission district. tickets range from 500 to $25,000, and vice president will also attend a second event in oakland. it's sponsored by a prominent indian american lawyer. let's take a live look outside overlooking san jose. carrie, you mentioned it. sun's going to start greeting us a little earlier every morning. yes and it's a nice start. all clear there. we can see the sunrise. and we're going to also continue with a mostly sunny sky going throughout today. our temperatures are in the low 50s in fremont. it is 50 in oakland, and we're at 57 in santa rosa. so also slightly warmer. there and dublin all clear. and temperatures in the upper 50s at 8:00 at noon. we're in the mid 70s and you can see the warming trend here. it's going to be a little warmer than it was yesterday as we're headed for the upper 70s as opposed to the low 70s we had yesterday
5:11 am
afternoon, an 85 degrees in concord, and we're up to 88 in fairfield. in novato today, 80 degrees with upper 60s in san francisco. mike, you're still tracking that sig alert? yeah, we have this issue going on in san jose. this overturned rig in the center of the screen. and then you see the crane over on the right or the i guess, heavy duty tow truck. what they're trying to do is they hope they can right this rig. they hope they can basically lift it up 90 degrees up the red side over there. that's the bottom of the truck. and the right side will be lifted. the left side will be lifted up. and if they can do so without the sides of the rig falling apart with the payload falling out, that's good news. we're going to watch and continue this bob redell is on the scene and this could be critical. this is critical in the timing of when they can reopen the connector. let me talk about what connector we are in san jose. we zoom into northbound 101 as we're looking at this connector right here, north 101, the commute direction. a little later on, we'll see more traffic flowing right here past oakland road
5:12 am
where things typically slow down the first at about 540, we see a lot more volume and a lot more slowing. the connector from north 101 to north 880 is the one. that is where we're looking with that overturned rig. that is the problem right now. if they can clear that rig up in the next, say, half an hour, that would be great news, because then they just have to sweep up all the sand barrels, the 40, potentially 40,000 pounds of strawberries in the area as well. no major injuries. this is just a major traffic headache. 680 and 280 would be your alternate to get around that scene, but that could cause a lot more slowing through the area. so we're looking at that for the south bay, but everything else is looking calm. back to you. wow. they just have to sweep. that's all. that's all. thanks, mike. before you know it, outside lands will be here. coming up next on today in bay when single ticket sales start and the announcement that's expected later today. yeah. plus three local students are in the national spotlight. their quest to win the national spelling bee and boeing has a leak in the rocket. it wants to
5:13 am
send astronauts to space in. and they said, you know what? let's an.
5:14 am
5:15 am
it is all clear this morning. no issues with any fog. and after a clear start we have a lot of sunshine and quickly warming temperatures. today we're going from low 50s to mid 70s. at noon we'll talk about a big warm up
5:16 am
in our microclimate forecast in a few minutes. and we may see a bigger slowdown than you expect right here. north 101. you see the volume starting to kick in right on schedule another 15 minutes and we expect to see slowing as you approach oakland road and 880. but the transition onto north 880 right now is blocked by the overturned big rig. we'll continue to follow that and we'll see how long this top number continues to build. that could cause a slowdown unexpectedly slow from a downtown. there may be an 87 reroute as well. we'll show you coming up. well good morning. very happy wednesday. the nasdaq will open at another new record on the strength of nvidia, which is up 20% in just the last week. that company just keeps going and going. shareholders at hess oil voted to approve a purchase by chevron in san ramon. this is dine brands, which owns ihop and applebee's. they say a full quarter of the people who go into those restaurants are now using some sort of coupon or

deal. that's a record high for them. people obviously looking for a deal in inflationary times, though, encouraging news out of the conference board, which says consumer confidence rose for the first time in three months, the numbers show consumers, though, still expect a recession and polling earlier this week by harris shows nearly 3 in 5 americans think we're in a recession, which we are absolutely not. half the people polled believe the stock market is down for the year. the dow, the nasdaq, the s&p 500 have all hit new records recently. mullin gates says she'll contribute $1 billion to protect women's rights. her announcement comes about two weeks after she said she was stepping down from the bill and melinda gates foundation. she's going to give money to help protect women's economic security, voting rights and abortion rights. in a new york times op ed, gates said, quote, as shocking as it is to contemplate, my one year old
5:18 am
granddaughter may grow up with fewer rights than i had space launched a rocket out of southern california that will put a new satellite in orbit to monitor the environment. this is the seventh time spacex has used this very rocket booster. remember they're reusable. meantime its competitor boeing continues to have all kinds of problems with its starliner rocket that will carry astronauts into space. remember, spacex carries astronauts into space all the time. boeing is having a devil of a time getting its rocket right. they've had delays or delay trying to hunt down a helium leak and then this week, boeing said, you know, let's just go. anyway, they didn't find the cause of the leak, but its first manned mission is scheduled for saturday. they're going up to the international space station. the nickname for it is the calamity capsule. oh, yeah. that's not good. so, you know, godspeed on saturday to the two astronauts, but, yeah, they're just going to go anyway. okay.
5:19 am
all right. good luck. good luck. all right. we'll stay here on the ground and hopefully we can go to this outside lands fans, get ready. the entire three day lineup is expected to be announced in just a matter of hours. it all comes ahead of single day tickets going on sale tomorrow. so we already know who's playing, just not when. the headliners include tyler, the creator, the killers, sturgill simpson and post malone. doing a country performance today. the exact performance days and stages will be revealed. the festival, of course, takes place august 9th through the 11th in golden gate park. and don't forget to join us for today in the bay streaming tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. will be joined live by one of the festival organizers, who will have everything you need to know ahead of outside lands 2024. you can watch it daily on roku, amazon fire tv, xumo and nbcbayarea.com streaming platforms, including our app. well, trending this morning, the bees are buzzing and we're not just talking about insects,
5:20 am
we're talking about the contestants at the scripps national spelling bee. yeah, today is the quarter finals and bay area has three local spellers in the competition. we have seventh grader aaron lee of belmont, san jose, eighth grader sharada raj, who placed third last year, and first timer amani sharon from cabo middle school in san jose. now, winners bring home a $50,000 cash prize and the official scripps cup trophy. you can watch the 2024 scripps national spelling bee live today and tomorrow on ion tv. that's funny because when you read the names, i thought i recognize some of them from last year. last year. yeah. wow. very impressive. good luck. good luck . good. represent the bay area for now. have a hard time remembering a couple of days ago . i remember the forecast has been good. yeah it hasn't been great. and it will get a little bit warmer over the next couple of days. we're trying to make everyone happy here. if you like the warmer weather, you're going
5:21 am
to see that heading into the next couple of days. here is a clear look at walnut creek as you're heading out. we're going to have a really nice sunrise and we can see that as well over the golden gate bridge as we take a live look at san francisco this morning on your commute and your drive. don't forget those sunglasses. you'll definitely need them for the morning and also the afternoon drive in martinez. we're going to see temperatures going from mid 50s to low 60s. at 9:00. we're at 71 at 11:00. and in the mid 70s already by noon, our south bay high temperatures in the upper 70s and low 80s. so we're coming up a few degrees compared to yesterday, and it won't be as windy in morgan hill. expect a high of about 83 degrees and we'll see some mid 80s for concord oakland, hayward, fremont 77. also 77 for redwood city in san francisco. so low 70s today that's going to be really nice. and we'll see a couple of more days of 70s in the forecast. while the north bay will be in the mid to upper
5:22 am
80s in some spots. and we do expect a big warming to happen over the next few days. but then look at all of the storms that have been moving into the pacific northwest. all of that rain up there that gets very close to the north bay, heading into early june. we don't always see that well, there could be some scattered showers on monday, but then a big ramp up in temperatures as high pressure quickly builds after that cold front moves through. so we're going to see our temperatures ramping up up to 94 tomorrow and then gradually coming back down for the weekend and then heating up again for the middle of next week. we start these waves in the spring, where we do have some, at times really warm weather, but then we get breaks in between with a nice cool down for a few days. and mike, you were saying that big rig still overturned in san jose? yeah. oh this one. yeah, exactly. that's why the connectors closed. you see it on the ramp. and folks familiar with this tight cloverleaf know that this can be
5:23 am
an issue for larger vehicles right now. just this rig overturned. no injuries, but they've got to clear this up. i don't know if they gave up or if they're resetting. they had the rigging connected to the rig already. and they were going to try and stand it up. so bob redell is on scene and he'll continue to follow this. but right now what it means is on the map, we're looking at this closure north 101 to north 880. that connector is closed. there are about ten santa barrels busted up from what i saw from a still camera in the area. and that could be a huge factor in the cleanup as well. oakland road 10th that will get you the surface streets. you can loop back from the southbound side. you can take 680 or 280 to get arnd it.ou

these pictures were on a pool rental app. well, here's the problem. eric didn't put them there. you see, he put his home up for sale and moved before the sale closed. well, in the interim, an imposter plucked the photos from eric's real estate listing and posted the pool for rent. then eric's security camera captured strangers arriving to swim in it. eric contacted us because he said the pool rental app wasn't responding. how could somebody post a listing without verifying that they actually own the property? we held the app accountable. we enlisted our

5:31 am
to you. on this wednesday, i'm marcus washington and i'm laura garcia. so let's get straight to that breaking news. mike inouye has details on that major sig alert in the south bay. this overture and big rig. yeah. you guys showed those pictures and it's pretty much the same thing right at this moment. what's not the same as the backup? it's starting to build as we talked about. this is first where we'll see the slowing typically not for another few minutes, but that connector is closed from north 101 onto north 880. by that overturned truck carrying potentially 40,000 pounds of fruit, and also a damage to about ten sand barrels. from what i saw as it hit along the side of the roadway on that connector. so that's closed right now, oakland road, typically a funnel point where we would see some slowing northbound, and we're seeing surface streets see more traffic in the area. folks coming to the freeway can't get on to get into the backups. and that is a problem already for the morning commute. typically, we see that slowdown happening about here and then continuing up to oakland road so that will continue to build over the next ten minutes. we may see a shift because well, i've been talking
5:32 am
about it frankly, taking 680 north past the scene or 280 north as well for 87, as we look at the live pictures, we still have that going on right here. the overturned rig is still no change and in fact they have not reconnected that that crane basically arm off the back of the tow truck. they were trying to lift it to write it onto its wheels. maybe they've stopped that waiting for an update from bob, who is on the scene, and he's getting more information on what strategy will be next. clearly this is not going to open soon. so back out to the roadways. we do have a slow drive continuing here. north 101 in san jose already showing the ripple effect. the rest of the bay is moving smoothly, including the bay bridge. there's no real backup at the toll plaza. carry it wouldn't happen here until early on. san jose is the only one early and unusual slowing. all right. and we're starting out with a live look in oakland this morning where we are all clear and definitely a different picture, even compared to 24 hours ago, where there was a pretty thick layer of clouds over the bay area. we're clear and sunny throughout the day, and temperatures warm up a lot more quickly and concord will be in
5:33 am
the mid 80s for the afternoon with a breezy wind and will be even warmer the next couple of days, so we'll take a look at all of our microclimates in the forecast that's coming up in a few minutes. laura. marcus. thanks, carrie. well, in just a few hours, convicted murderer scott peterson returns to court in an ongoing bid to clear his name. today in the bay ginger conejero saab live for us outside of the courthouse in redwood city. ginger. a lot of eyes on this. what can we expect today? good morning. marcus. laura, attorneys for la's innocence project, filed new motions requesting for dna testing on evidence that was gathered during the murder investigation. that includes a mattress that was found inside a burned out van found near the peterson's modesto home, and other pieces of evidence that washed up along san francisco bay. 51 year old peterson is serving life in prison for the murder of his wife, laci, and their unborn son, connor. he was convicted 20 years ago. now we spoke to a legal expert, stephen clark, about the defense's
5:34 am
strategy. what the defense is asking for is access to evidence that previous had either not been tested or was tested, but today's technology is much more up to date and they want to establish an alternative theory. could laci peterson have still been alive when scott peterson went fishing? prosecutors are opposing the motions for dna testing from the defense, saying they will not hand anything over unless ordered. so by the court. now, we will be following the case as we have been and bring you all new developments on air and online at nbcbayarea.com in redwood city, ginger conejero sahib today in the bay. all right. we'll see how it all plays out. thank you. ginger and also today in court, opening statements are on track to begin in the state trial for david depape. he is the man who attacked paul pelosi with a hammer. now the pap's attorney yesterday, arguing that the
5:35 am
state charges should be dropped due to double jeopardy. the judge deferred a ruling saying that the trial should proceed. depape did get a chance to speak yesterday as part of his federal sentencing. a judge also resentenced him to 30 years in prison. mountain view is the latest bay area city to approve license plate readers. it comes after a unanimous vote by council members late last night following a lengthy hearing. the devices will be used to assist in crimes including hit and runs, amber alerts and car and package thefts. but while some residents are concerned about that added surveillance, others believe the time has come. it is a good idea in the sense of it will improve, you know, detection and probably tracing, but at the same time a little hesitant. i mean, you know, it'll get used for all kinds of small things like, you know, you're living in your residential area, you take a left turn when there's nobody there, and then you could get a

ticket. police are planning to utilize 24 cameras, which capture license plate images and compare the information with national crime data. well, a bay area lawmaker now pushing for a statewide ban on certain type of firefighter uniforms. the reason those uniforms may cause cancer. now, the new bill is backed by san francisco assembly member matt haney. the issue is with the uniform jacket and pants. our investigative unit found that they contain chemicals known as pfas. now those chemicals are supposed to help the clothing repel flammable liquids and resist extreme heat. but research has shown absorbing those compounds through your skin can be dangerous. and city leaders recently approved a ban on the gear. now, the state legislation would also ban those uniforms as long as a safer alternative is available. and you can watch the full story right now on our website. that's nbc bay area.com/investigations. with the recall election now locked in for november, embattled alameda county

district attorney pamela price is reaching out to asian american voters. i would like to take this opportunity to once again inform the public about the facts of my long standing relationship with the aapi community here in the bay area over the past 30 years. i represented many members of the aapi community on social media. yesterday, posting this video touting her record in high profile crimes targeting asian american victims. she also talked about the increased hiring of asian american staff members in the da's office. the video followed an unusual day for price. she originally scheduled a news conference to announce her chinese name, then abruptly canceled the event. similar announcements by non-chinese candidates elsewhere in the bay area have resulted in backlash. turning now to decision 2024, and we are still waiting to learn who will represent berkeley's district for district four. this is following a special election to

that too often. meteorologist kari hall of course, monitoring all of that for us this morning. and carrie, it's looking good out there. yeah, it's a little bit of a shock because we've had so much may gray throughout the month that marine layer and those low clouds that we see. but now that's gone. and you know what that means. it's going to be a warmer day. it's going to warm up today with the warmest days tomorrow and friday. and then as we go into early june, we're going to have some summer like heat. so we'll talk about that. let's get a look at our highs for today. not bad. we're talking upper 70s. it's going to be a little bit warmer than it was yesterday. 82 in san martin, 81 in livermore and 85 in concord. we'll also hit a high of 85 in santa rosa, while san francisco will be in the upper 60s. we'll get a look at that warm up coming up in a few minutes. and mike, we were looking at a traffic break. we were work here. yes, indeed. but now it's not a traffic break. it's a slow roller. we have flashing lights. you can kind of see them now making their way. carrie and i were watching
5:40 am
activity right here. something was in lanes. folks were moving over to the service area and back around there, the flashing lights. so whatever assistance, maybe it was a slower moving vehicle. they're now pushing across that flat section, hitting the high rise. so there is a slowdown westbound. it's really jammed up on that flat section. but it's not a major issue as folks are traveling westbound. we're just starting to see those sensors slow. continuing up the high rise will be a factor for the next few minutes, hopefully getting to foster city and clearing over the next ten. we're looking at the dumbarton bridge. that is clear as well. so most of the bay looking really good, but there is that slower drive west 92. but this is the big issue continuing in san jose you're going to need to know north 680 or north 280 off of north 101. if you're heading up over toward oakland road. and 880, that would be an alternate. if you're continuing up onto 880 or in toward mountain view and santa clara, because this connector is closed and this is creating a backup early and a little bit more severe than we typically see. north 101 connector onto north 880 continues to be closed by the overturned rig. this is

the first slowing we see. it will get much worse in an hour. so we're hoping they will make progress. we have a live camera and bob redell out there right now. they have opened the back of the truck, so i think it looks like they're going to have to offload all the payload there for that truck. if that's the case, we have, i think maybe 40,000 pounds estimated of strawberries there. we have a damaged sand barrels, about ten of them. we have a debris. we have sand. we have a little bit of fuel that has to be cleaned up on this connector before it can even start to be reopened. good news, no one is injured. but bad news this is going to take a while to clear. we'll continue to follow this with bob on scene. just understand why all the strawberry. i feel bad for that guy. i had to call his boss. probably. yeah. all right. thanks mike. 541 for you right now, nicole brown simpson's sisters speaking out ahead on today in the bay. their reaction to simpson's death and how it changes their ongoing search for justice. the white house says israel did not cross a red line with that horrific attack in

feeling goes from mid 50s to upper 70s. we'll feel a change in the next few days, so we'll talk about that coming up in the full microclimate forecast. and it looks like a little change for the better. san mateo bridge westbound. those tail lights, they're moving more smoothly now. i don't know if they've cleared that disabled vehicle or if it's just in the surface service area. we'll track west 92. but again, things are recovering a bit before the build happens. 101 going to look slower. it looks okay here. farther north we have that closure on the connector will continue with the overturned video. thank you very much mike. it is 5:45 right now. june 12th marks 30 years since the brutal murders of nicole brown simpson and her friend ron goldman, and the recent death of oj simpson will add extra weight for surviving family members. jurors acquitted simpson in the highly publicized 1995 criminal trial. he was later found liable in a 1997 civil case. nicole brown's

sisters are speaking out this morning live in an interview following simpson's death. it is ahead of a new two part documentary on cable television. this weekend. the trio tell today they feel like now is the right time to share their stories. 20 years didn't feel right then we tried 25 years and i said no, it just doesn't feel right. and then i said, do you know what 30 i think is going to be right? and i asked my sisters and i said, do you guys want to do this? do you want to get together? do you want to humanize nicole and let people know, let the world know who nicole really was? and everybody agreed that this was the right time. wow. and interesting. just on the heels of his death at that time, to well, you can watch a full interview. it's coming up on the today show at 7 a.m, right after today in the bay well, the white house says israel, quote, did not cross a red line in its latest airstrike in southern gaza. scott mcgrew joins us now. we now know it was an american made weapon that actually hit those refugees. yeah, the new york times, the
5:47 am
first to report that gbu 39 is actually one of our more accurate weapons. so, as you know, refugees were hit, at least 45 are people are dead, including women and children. and the video coming out of that camp is absolutely horrific. we don't show horrific video on television, but there's really no point in showing you sanitized video either. the white house has warned israel not to invade rafah, but doesn't consider this bombing to be an invasion as a result of this strike on sunday. i have no policy changes to speak to. it just happened. the israelis are going to investigate it. we're going to be taking great interest in what they find in that investigation, and we'll see where it goes from there. now, netanyahu said yesterday that the strike was the result of a terrible mistake. kirby reminded the world one way or the other. israelis are also victims. maybe some people have forgotten what happened on the 7th of october, but we haven't. 1200 israelis, innocent israelis

, slaughtered, mutilated, raped, tortured and they're living right next to that kind of threat. still, a viable threat in rafah. by the way, if you think hamas is just gone, they're not gone from rafah or from gaza. and if you think they've abandoned their genocidal intent towards the nation of israel, think again. they haven't. so israel has every right to not want to live next to that kind of threat. and yes, we're going to continue to provide them the capabilities to go after it. other international news a group of american lawmakers are in taiwan, solidifying the alliance between the us and the island nation. these sorts of displays upset the chinese. french president macron says the ukrainians can go ahead and use french supplied missiles to hit targets inside russia, so long as those targets launched first, so against artillery or other missile launchers, but not at, say, a factory or troop barracks. macron has also discussed sending uniformed french military advisors into ukraine

while presidents deal with israel. airstrikes in russia. former president trump has a waiting game today, the prosecutor delivered its closing arguments well into the evening yesterday day. and now jury instructions are today, followed by deliberations and eventually a verdict. yesterday he had family in the courtroom, his daughter tiffany and his two sons, the president of the united states is not allowed to exercise his first amendment rights in new york city. in this day and age, does that not tell us all? everything we need to know about what we're witnessing? it's a witch hunt. now, of course, trump is free to speak about anything he wants during the trial, though, he was instructed not to speak outside the court about witnesses, court staff or jurors because of the fear he would intimidate them. trump chose not to testify in his own defense, which is his right. trump has implied he was not allowed to testify and based on past statements, he may claim that again, if he loses. to be clear, anybody has the right to

testify in their own defense. mike, gag order or not? interesting development. scott. we'll see what else comes up today. now this morning we continue to celebrate asian american native hawaiian and pacific islander heritage here at nbc bay area. and i ask you folks, what do you do when a company tells you that your culture doesn't lead? it just follows well for these guys. they created a new company with our culture as the lead. i want you to meet adam king, taiwanese american sneaker head. after working his way up the ranks of to global product line manager for a major sneaker company, he would hear talk in the back rooms of making decisions. they said asian american market wasn't needed. it wasn't enough to move a brand. i got so tired of hearing that asian americans were follower consumers, or that the word asian american was so uncool. it was like the third rail of marketing, and you never use it. instead of waiting for them to decide that we were good

enough, we just we knew inside and had the confidence that we were. and what's been incredible has been that the numbers and the reception that we've gotten, not just within, but outside the community, has reflected that. now that's co-founder sam yun. together sam is a korean american, bringing the background of business and social change as well. together, they helped create 1587 sneakers, the first sneaker brand in the us that's owned and designed and inspired entirely by asian american culture. all our shoes. we put lots of messages speaking to the asian american community. so first and foremost on every shoe it says 1587 because that's the first year that asian americans came to america. and for us, that's a rallying cry. so every time people say, oh, you're new to the country, you're foreigners. no, we've been here for hundred years on every foot bed it says, leave your shoes at the door. we walk into any asian household and, you know, you don't take your shoes off. you're probably going to get a sandal thrown at your head. so, you know, do so
5:52 am
at your own peril. that's cool. so these guys, i mean, they are asian american. they're making decisions not to sort of appropriate the culture. they're saluting the culture and the various cultures that are around there. right we showed a plaque there from morro bay. morro bay is the place in 1587 where a filipino were first to set foot on here, or at least documented there. so as adam was talking about 400 years, we've been on this country a little further south, a little further south right here. so that's the very local tie. but the two of them, they are based in boston. i'll be honest, guys, i did not want to do the story until i checked out the shoes. i bought them myself. so i'm wearing a pair right here and i'm going to pull them off. you see it? yeah. i'm going to show you these are these are clean. i have clean socks on. you see, it says leave your shoes at the door. at the door right in there. and then the 1580, 1787 right here. that's the first year. and inside the tongue, let's see what this side says. size ten, size ten small feet. it also says unapologetic because they've created a place. now i want to say this. that's adam
5:53 am
and sam have created a place where the soles that they sell reflect the souls of the company and the brand, and they have taken the cultural tagline of unapologetically asian because of, i think, some of the experience that sam had within the industry, saying that, you know, he's had to apologize for bringing up a product line, or maybe this is a good idea. if we brand it with something else, we can put the asian twist on it as well. but he's like, no, no. now, sam, i love that. what a wonderful ownership i love it exactly. so cool. hey and good looking kicks today. thanks. yeah. rocking him with a suit. they're not cheap i got to say. they're not cheap, but, you know, well worth it. try to support the businesses that need it. yeah. investment in the community and the community. celebration of the community i love it. great. thanks for the time. thank you all right. well we're going to go out and do a little stroll today with mike fresh kicks. we're not going to get them dirty, but we are going to have some nice weather as we're getting started. here's a look at what to expect over the next few days. we have a lot of sunshine now. the warm up begins today. yesterday it was windy
5:54 am
and cool. today we're going to start to feel that warmth taking it up a notch for this afternoon. and then the next couple of days it does get hot. some of our inland valleys will be hitting the low 90s, but then ahead it cools down. but then we see the return of some summer temperatures for early june. we'll talk about that. let's get a look at what we're seeing out there right now. temperatures in napa in the upper 40s. it's 51 in palo alto and in fremont. as you step out the door, we have an early afternoon game in san francisco with the giants. it's going to be really nice. upper 60s sunshine. and it's also still going to be windy there, of course. so we're going to see those temperatures also warmer in the city also heating up just a bit more for the inland areas. we're up to 82 in martinez today and 81 in livermore, 82 for san martin. and then in santa rosa. we're the warmest at 85 there, as well as 88 in fairfield. look at tomorrow's highs, 93 in fairfield. while we're mostly
5:55 am
seeing mid to upper 80s from the south county into the north bay, novato 85 degrees and then on friday we're looking at some low to mid 80s. so it's still going to be hot. but the heat starts to back off a bit and we're going to see a storm system come very close for the end of the weekend into early next week. but the outlook as we head into that first full week of june, it's going to be very hot all across the west. the outlook showing some well above average temperatures. and so we're going to see these temperatures going up and down just depending on the direction of the wind. what kind of coastal area do we have or do we get that marine layer coming in. and then as we go throughout the next several days, it's going to go from hot to mild for the weekend. mike, you're tracking that crash. and the closure continues. yeah not hot but this is what's going on. but look they've hooked up that rig once again or they're hooking it up. you see the folks inside the well the trailer
5:56 am
that's on its side. they have to continue to offload all the strawberries that were the payload there. it was not able to be lifted without taking that off. they're hoping to clear that hopefully sooner than later . we have a small fuel spill as well. bob redell continues to follow this and daniel, our photographer out on the scene, also gave us more info. just saying that they are continuing. perhaps another hour they think, which would be great news. i mean, let's look at the problem that's causing though right now no major injuries, in fact, no injuries reported at the scene. so we talk only about the hassle it's creating for the morning commute. the connector from north 101 on to 880 is blocked. folks are able to get off at oakland road. that makes oakland 10th and the surface streets here in san jose pretty crowded and congested. so you can avoid the entire area by taking 680 north. still moving well or 280 north to 87. those are both moving well, but they will get very congested over the next hour as well. also, over at the bay bridge we have the backup and some slowing through richmond, but no surprises. back to you. thanks, mike. well happening now, santa clara county vector control teams preparing to spray an east san jose neighborhood in hopes of eliminating an invasive

mosquito. they the so-called yellow fever mosquito, can spread dengue fever and zika virus spraying will start at 830 this morning in a neighborhood surrounding machado lane. it will be done with treatments sprayed from trucks mounted on canisters. well, this t this morning our team is certainly staying on top of that breaking news we've been telling you about in the south bay. a live report from the scene of this overturned big rig in san jose. also, the impact it's having on the morning commute. plus, on the run, the search underway for an inmate who escaped from a hollister prison. and the concerning reason prison officials say he was able to slip away in the first ace.pl
