went to the school to check on the students. some parents, who asked not to be shown, told me their children got violently ill over the next two days. around 24 hours later, woke up in the middle of the night and vomited. and unfortunately, you know, was basically violently vomiting and couldn't hold down liquids for around 12 hours. another parent said the cause was clear afterwards, she continued to have like coughing, lung inflammation, nasal inflammation. we took her to her doctor, pediatric doctor, who confirmed that these are symptoms of tear gas exposure. now the san francisco chronicle cites sources who claim those chemicals may have included expired chemical agents that date as far back as the 1960s. the sheriff's office has not commented on the claim, but san mateo county supervisor david canepa says investigations need to be conducted on what are often vague safety procedures. but this incident really, has us
6:01 pm
opened a can of worms and making sure that i and other elected officials understand and what is happening with the dispensing of these chemicals. the sheriff's department, in a statement apologized to the school students and staff and said it was pausing any future chemical agent training as it reviews current practices to make them safer. some parents are skeptical. i would like a lot of clarity and transparency, and we definitely want the parties involved to be held accountable. there's a lot of sick kids that are still sick. supervisor canepa agrees. he says he is planning to schedule a public hearing to address what happened here and to make sure it doesn't happen again in san bruno. robert honda, nbc, bay area news a cowboy in richmond is taking legal action after he says he was assaulted by a cop while filming an arrest at a market
6:02 pm
today, casey gus was joined by fellow cowboys and civil rights attorneys john burris and brandon yee, the incident happened right outside that store behind them, joe's market. earlier this month, gus said he was recording an arrest when an officer started arguing with him, accusing him of interfering. after heated words, video shows and officers striking gus repeatedly before arresting him. gus has now filed a claim against the city, which gives richmond a chance to resolve this case if it's rejected, it could lead to a lawsuit. we have reached out to richmond police for an official response. a new report found 73% of the people who live in oakland live near a recent deadly shooting. the article, published in the new york times, mapped every gun homicide since 2020. it shows 47 million americans nationwide living within a quarter mile of gun violence. but the oakland mayor's office representatives feel the city is turning a corner, and noted crime numbers
6:03 pm
have come down 30% compared to last. the mayor's critics say more needs to be done, and they believe it starts with the changes to her proposed budget. the mayor is not being honest, to be frank. if you look at the budget, we have a huge gaping hole from the mismanagement and she is drastically cutting, public safety in terms of the numbers of police officers and today a small group rallied in front of city hall. they're accusing mayor tao of significantly reducing funding for public safety. fire and city services. the mayor disputes those claims and says her proposed budget invests in public safety and clean streets, while avoiding severe reductions to city services and layoffs. city council is meeting right now to discuss the mayor's budget proposal. prosecutors in the state trial of david depape wasted no time getting to the most graphic evidence they're trying to prove that he attempted to murder the husband
6:04 pm
of former house speaker nancy pelosi. the opening statements for prosecutors included graphic photos of paul pelosi's injuries and video. you see the video right there showing depape hitting him in the head with the hammer right outside. inside their front door. they also have videos of depape breaking into the pelosi's pacific heights home, and video of depape explaining what he did and why to detectives. the two officers who responded to the 911 call from paul pelosi were called as witnesses. they highlighted details caught on their body cameras and their arrest of depape. depapes public defender does not dispute the evidence. instead, he asked jurors to consider depapes mental state at that time and pointed out that depape never said he intended to kill anyone. it does show the assault, and it doesn't show the perhaps mental state, which is what they're going with now that he believed in the pizzagate and believe in all these conspiracies. yes. and that would reduce his intent, his
6:05 pm
frame of mind, his mental state to commit an attempted murder. david depape is charged with eight felonies, including attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and burglary. he's already been convicted and sentenced to 30 years in prison for federal charges related to that same attack at the pelosi home in san francisco, a proposed bill that would target the rights of transgender youth has failed to qualify for the november ballot. the initiative would have banned gender affirming care for minors and require schools to inform parents if their children identify as trans. supporters of the measure said that they collected about 400,000 signatures, but that's more than 100,000 signatures short of what is required to appear on the ballot. some tenants in oakland have filed a lawsuit against their landlord over what they call inhumane living conditions. in january, there was an electrical fire at an 18 unit apartment building in the fruitvale neighborhood. there's the building, 100 tenants spent
6:06 pm
nearly a month without electricity or hot water. they say there has been very little contact from the landlord and the management company, selborne properties. no tenant, no child, no family should ever have to go through a month of not having electricity, of being completely destabilize from their home and having to come from out of their own pocket to pay for expenses that they could have not paid for if they had a stable, habitable home. the tenants say there are also serious long standing conditions at this property, including mold, fire hazards and pest infestations, selborne properties tells nbc bay area they will continue to work with the city of oakland, pg&e, and the property owner to address any issues. okay, another bay area city says it is time to add license plate readers to its crime fighting arsenal. the city council in mountain view made that decision amid a growing debate over how to balance crime concerns and
6:07 pm
your right to privacy. here's nbc's scott budman. mountain view will soon put 24 license plate readers in place throughout the city. officers say the readers will capture a still image of the back of each car that drives by, then compare the plates to a law enforcement database in hopes of catching up to criminals. the majority of the cities in santa clara county have already implemented the systems. this is where the 24 are set to go. residents tell us they have mixed feelings about the readers. just like security cameras outside of homes deters burglars and homes. let's hope and i believe it probably will do a similar things when it comes to vehicles. i can see what they're trying to do, but the problem is this is a slippery slope, a slippery slope, some say when it comes to your privacy, this is definitely a privacy violation. and that it records all of us whether we're guilty of anything or just driving around going about our business. but officers say the
6:08 pm
focus will not be on individuals or their data. it helps us to identify vehicles that are flagged in the system for a reason. so a vehicle that's been involved in a shooting or a homicide potentially, or even missing persons and things like that. to that end, the mountain view pd also says the license plate readers will never be used for facial recognition traffic citations, immigration enforcement, or out of town abortion investigations in mountain view. scott budman nbc, bay area news. scott, thank you. let's take you outside now. our sky ranger over ocean beach in san francisco today. this looks like southern california. it's just sunny and warm. i don't see any fog anything out there. let's bring in our chief meteorologist, jeff ranieri, tracking these warmer temperatures. how you doing, jeff? oh we're doing all good. yes. warmer across the bay area check this out. temperatures well above the averages. we did
6:09 pm
hit up to 89 in santa rosa. the average 78. concord 88, livermore 86, san jose 82. now, as we head through tomorrow's forecast, we're going to be getting into the 90s, which is something we haven't seen in quite some time. check this out in livermore. last time that we had 90 degree temperatures was way back on last october. the 99th, when we hit 93 degrees. that was over 200 days ago. so i know some of you are ready for that heat. we're going to talk more about those warming temperatures in the forecast. also, the temperature trends ahead and how many more days of 90s. i've got that full forecast coming up in just a few minutes. and it is a verdict. watch for the hush money trial for former president donald trump. what happened in day one of jury deliberations today? also, reparations in baseball, the dramatic shift in the record books. why some decades long player records are now being changed. we'll explain next
6:10 pm
6:11 pm
6:12 pm
today in his new york hush money trial. jurors have gone home for the day. after about 4.5 hours of deliberations, the jury is discussing the 34 counts of falsified business records trump faces. it's connected to a hush money payment to adult film actor stormy daniels during the 2016 presidential campaign. during deliberations, the jury sent two notes to the court requesting information related to the testimony of david pecker and michael cohen. the former president must remain at the courthouse during deliberations. jurors will be back at it again at 930 tomorrow morning and will deliberate until 6:00 at the latest. at a pivotal moment for major league baseball, the league has attended has added the stats of the historic league to its official record. so really combining the stats here, the move recognizes the talents of 2300 players, many of whom were world were not accepted into the major leagues until
6:13 pm
jackie robinson broke the color barrier in the 1940s. the recognition came after an independent committee spent more than three years reviewing player data. today the president of the league museum called this a watershed moment, and i do believe that all of us family members of those players of the leagues, that small existing existing number of leaguers who are still with us, and, of course, all of us here at the leagues baseball museum who are stewards of this story. this is significant. and it's amazing what's happening here to the record books. one of the last three living league players is giants hall of famer willie mays. he still lives on the peninsula. the new stats means he got a small bump in total hits, going to nearly 3300 for his career. mays played with the birmingham black barons before he was old enough to sign with the giants. the giants, by the way, will play a tribute game
6:14 pm
against the cardinals at the barons historic field in alabama on june 20th. this move also shakes up a record linked to giants legend barry bonds. his record for best slugging percentage in a single season now belongs to josh gibson. gibson is considered one of the best sluggers to never play in the major leagues. he also now is the all time hitting leader, surpassing babe ruth coming up on nightly news, gibson's great grandson talks about what this really means for his legacy. lester holt joins us at 630. well, san francisco took a step to create more affordable housing downtown. today. the mayor joined community leaders, city officials, breaking ground on two new apartment buildings. together. they're called transbay block two. collectively, they'll have units for low income seniors, families and the formerly unhoused, while including space for supportive services, affordable child care and retail. the buildings will add to the east cut, a growing
6:15 pm
neighborhood in the soma district. i feel like oprah winfrey. you get home, you get a home, you get a home. everybody gets a home. and let me tell you the reason why we are so excited to be here in the east coast is because it's been a long time coming. both buildings expected to be finished by 2026, housing up to 800 people. it's part of the city's 30 by 30 goal to bring in 30,000 new residents and students to downtown by 2030 to revitalize that area. okay x marks the spot in san francisco. look at this. the popular crosstown trail is getting an expansion. the original 17 mile trail was created by volunteers five years ago, connecting the city from the southeast to the northwest. that's the green trail on this map. now you see that blue trail, the double truss trail there in blue crossing from the southwest to the northeast, marking x across san francisco. the urban hike
6:16 pm
takes visitors along hidden trails and through public parks, shopping and community gardens to celebrate, organizers are holding guided hikes on both trails throughout next month. well, hey, a live look from our sutro tower camera on this wednesday evening and you can see right there sunshine. maybe a little bit of fog kind of creeping in. jeff. a little bit of haze, some low level moisture, but it looks warm still. i know postcard perfect out there. never get tired of that view. we could see a little bit of patchy fog right up against the immediate coastline, but otherwise as we move through tomorrow, lots of sun here through the bay area. let me show you what those temperatures are like. if you're headed out here over the next couple of hours, we're starting to see things dip. but overall, the big headline here is we are still very warm, at least for this time of the year. right now, 87 in santa rosa, one of the warmest 85 in concord, napa, 81 livermore in san jose, upper 70s. and we still have that ocean breeze. so temperatures here are cooler half moon bay to
6:17 pm
san francisco in the 50s to 60s right now. as we move through tomorrow's forecast, high pressure that's been helping to bring in some of this warmer other weather stays in just about the same spot, so no chance of any cold air moving back in through tomorrow. we're locked in for quite a bit of warm weather, especially for those inland valleys. so as we take you through tomorrow morning's forecast, we're going to begin with some low to mid 50s under mostly sunny skies, just a little chance of a few areas of patchy fog near the coast in the bay. that'll put us down to 56 in the south bay, right here through the north bay 52 and over to the east bay. looking good at 55 as we move through the afternoon tomorrow. temperatures warming up a few more degrees. so down here in the south bay, not quite widespread 90s, but hey look, we are close. it's going to be a nice day outside. a little bit of a breeze out of the northwest at 13. has you at 88 in cupertino, 89 in los gatos and also 89 in morgan hill. as you get closer to the bay, temperatures warming up as well. oakland 78, hayward 80. get over those east bay hills. we're in
6:18 pm
the 90 degree plus club here. antioch, concord, danville, pleasanton and right back to livermore. no 90 at the immediate coastline. that's because of that ocean breeze, 63, in half moon bay and down towards redwood city. we're going to be at 84 san francisco, low 70s here through downtown in the mission. then you get out to the outer sunset 69 and the marina 63. and for the north bay 90, in santa rosa, and 89 here in sonoma. so lots of warm weather with us here as we head through tomorrow. and i really see this day of some 90 as a one day event here for us at least in the near term. we've got the storm track moving a little bit to the south on friday, so it's going to take some of that hottest air and move it away from us. look, we're still going to be warm but just not expecting 90s here as we head through friday or the weekend. some low 80s in napa. as we move into the upcoming weekend. eventually we get back up to 94. next wednesday shouldn't last too long. we then see those temperatures dip for the
6:19 pm
following weekend with some low 80s, so a few quick bursts of some heat and then we are done with it. the way it looks now nationally, we continue to follow more severe weather. tomorrow it's dallas to lubbock, strong thunderstorms, maybe some isolated tornadoes. so the possibility of some delays in dallas will be very high right here in san francisco. we'll continue with that mix of 60s and 70s on my 7-day forecast. and we're at 82 on saturday, 81 on sunday. so how are you guys feeling about this summer sizzle i think raj you're you're kind of pumped up about it. i barbecued last weekend. i'm going to do it again this weekend. big fan okay. on board. all right. thanks, chef. yeah well up next an alarming trend. has one neighborhood checking their flower beds. what some thieves are now doing to target their next victims. and a reminder if you're driving around the city next few days, northbound 19th avenue will be shut down between sloat and taraval in the sunset. this is a big artery through san francisco. crews are repairing potholes. that's the good news.
