the temperatures come down a few degrees, but then as we look ahead, we're going to have some more high summer heat as we welcome in the month of june. today we're going to see a wide range in temperatures and how nice the weather will be will really depend on where you are. we'll be in the upper 60s in san francisco, but if you're in fairfield, it will be 91 this afternoon, and we'll talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. mike, you've got another crash and closure this morning. yes, exactly. but it's not exactly the same impact, though. yesterday was 101 at 880. that's okay. this part of the south bay is clear. silicon valley. we go even farther south to the crash and closure of westbound 152. that's coming into the area out of hollister, heading into gilroy, 152 westbound is closed because of an overturned semi, a fuel spill there. no major injuries, but i just got the update. the chp has now issued the alert. the backup quickly forming over the last 20 minutes. even though it's been

there longer. bloomfield is your alternate to get around the scene that's westbound. 152 getting over to i-5. our viewers locally to the south bay, they're just fine. and then i guess there's one other incident in castro valley. we're going to hand it off to you for that activity in the east bay. well, we begin this morning with that breaking news, mike, you might see smoke this morning if you're heading through castro valley. that's because firefighters are in the middle of an intense battle. this is after a market catches fire. now, this is a live look right now of that scene. so this is right now at the lake chabot public market. it's across the street from the castro valley community center. and you can see there firefighters there really battling those intense flames. so this all started a little before 330 this morning. you can see that those flames are shooting from the roof there. lake chabot road is closed at quail avenue due to that fire. today in the bay bob redell is at the scene. he'll have a live update for us coming up in the next half hour. well, new

overnight that inmate who escaped from a hollister jail tuesday morning is now back in custody. this is after authorities captured him in the south bay today in the bay's. tom jensen is live outside sapd headquarters this morning. and tom, they're really getting lots of thanks right now from san benito county deputies as. yes. good morning, ginger and marcus. the san martin san benito county sheriff, eric taylor took to social media and personally thanked san jose pd last night after danielle zavala lopez zavala was arrested here in san jose. zavala was arrested at a san jose hotel last night and was with his girlfriend, who police say helped him escape in hollister on tuesday, jailers said they saw zavala jumping over a barbed wire fence tuesday morning. the sheriff said he was a known gang member with a long criminal history, and as soon as zavala was back in custody, he went straight to facebook to thank his staff and other

agencies who helped catch him. we're also eternally grateful to our friends at the santa cruz county anti-crime task force, as well as the san jose police department, as they helped us locate this male in san jose tonight and took him into custody without incident. sheriff taylor blamed the escape on a lack of jail staffing, but said he's still investigating where all the breakdowns were that allowed zavala to escape. he said others who helped hide zavala are also being investigated and more arrests could follow for anyone who helped him. we're live in san jose. tom jensen today in the bay. all right, tom, thank you. new conflicts this morning at uc santa cruz. they're prompting leaders to close the campus today. now, classes, however, will continue online. this is new video shot overnight of a blockade first put up by pro-palestinian demonstrators on tuesday. now it's literally blocking access to the school

with a makeshift plywood barrier. the chancellor of the university says protesters were asked to allow cars onto campus, but they would not comply. former president donald trump's fate remains in the hands of 12 jurors. deliberations in his hush money trial continue to in a matter of hours today in the bay's brie jackson joins us live from washington and brie. a verdict could be reached as soon as today. that's right. good morning, ginger marcus. so the jury deliberated for about 4.5 hours without reaching a verdict yesterday. so we remain on verdict watch. but before heading home for the day, they did ask to rehear certain testimony as jurors reconvene today in the first criminal trial of an american president. former president trump, during day one of deliberations, they asked to rehear portions of testimony, including from the very first witness, former tabloid publisher david pecker. and it also did ask for some

testimony from michael cohen, which suggests that they didn't write off his testimony. we, as the defense asked them to do. the jury also wants judge juan merchan to reread his jury instructions. they want to understand the fine legal points of the law, and this is not unusual. the judge directed the jury to set aside any biases for or against mr. trump, who claims this case is election interference. and then what is very unfair is that i'm not campaigning in this room all day long. president biden and vice president harris were on the campaign trail wednesday, making their pitch to black voters in pennsylvania. carmen and i are president and vice president of the united states because of you. that's not hyperbole. biden painting his political rival as a threat to democracy. he calls insurrectionists who stormed the capitol patriots, patriots. what

you think would happen if black americans had stormed the capitol? trump's legal fate is now in the hands of 12 jurors. both presidential candidates are using his legal woes to make their case for reelection. voters will have the final say this november, and if convicted, former president trump faces anything from probation to prison time. and even if he is found guilty, trump can still be elected president. marcus ginger all right. thank you. brie jackson live there from washington. definitely watching out for that verdict. watch now a stinging setback for scott peterson's legal team and their effort to win him a new trial. a san mateo county judge denied nearly all of the dna testing requests from peterson's defense team yesterday, allowing just one of his team's 14 requests the retesting of duct tape found on laci peterson's body. peterson appeared virtually for the hearing. attorneys for la's

innocence project are leading his case as he serves a life sentence for the 2002 murder of his wife and unborn son. his former defense attorney, mark geragos, believes this ruling still renews hope to clear him if you can develop a profile of this duct tape as a result of the kind of, the more robust techniques available in the scientific arena now than there was 20 years ago. and that leads to a profile of somebody else, and that somebody else, is a viable suspect. yes. that's a way to unravel this. stanislaus county prosecutors argued testing had already been done in many cases and repeated dna testing is protected under victim family protection laws. they also maintain what peterson's team calls a bloody mattress, found years after peterson's conviction, in fact, that it contains no blood. another hearing is scheduled for july. today is the deadline for

boeing to tell federal regulators how it plans to fix safety and quality problems, which have plagued the aircraft manufacturer. now, the faa requiring boeing to produce a turnaround plan following the blowout of that door panel on an alaska airlines flight back in january, whistleblowers accused the company of taking shortcuts. it's a claim boeing disputes. the faa has limited production of its 737 max, boeing's top selling plane, now a heads up for bart riders this weekend. a portion of the san francisco line will be shut down between 24th street station and daly city. now, crews will be replacing aging rail lines, as well as installing new lighting. the green line service will be canceled and there will be no red line service from millbrae to daly city. take a look there on your maps. bart says there will be free bus service between those stations. take a live look out this morning. beautiful

camera during court proceedings in michigan. take a look at this . a man appears virtually in front of a judge while behind the wheel. so this is all despite the fact that the man you see right there at the bottom of the screen, he has a suspended license. yeah. so the judge visibly in shock, like, wait a minute, are you doing. i think you're doing. so this is corey harris. sorry, corey. yeah. corey's public defender requested a four week adjournment, but it was denied that judge ordered him to turn himself in to jail by the end of that day, there's no word of if he actually went back home. he said he was actually pulling up to his doctor's office. oh yeah. he was like. the funny part was, i'm showing up at jail. well, he shows up on the screen and the judge looks and he's like, what are you doing? he's like, i'm pulling up to the doctor's office. just one second. he said, are you stationary? just one second pulls into the spot. he's like, there, i'm here. and he was like. and the judge goes, i'm confused now. are you here for didn't he have a suspended

license? and he's like, yeah. and then the guy's like, oh yeah. oh that's why i'm here. oh my goodness. if you get a chance to see it online, take a moment. i thought this was like what? like you're you're on trial for robbing a bank. and then you're just like, with the money, like a bag of money and a ski mask, and it's like you, the bags have that big old dollar sign on them, like you're kind of like, what's the lesson here? don't get a suspended license and then don't drive on. so many lessons. so many lessons. so you don't know where. oh, corey. oh, he's looking at his scheduler. oh, i thought this was a different court date. oh, those are the other charge. common sense is not common. let's start out this morning with a look at a clear sky across the bay area. and it is also nice and cool. we are going to see a really nice day, but it's going to heat up quickly for much of the inland areas and then the weekend will be slightly cooler, but with next week we're expecting some

summer like heat. we'll take a look at that right now we're in the low 50s in san francisco, but it is 60 in martinez. a little bit more breezy there keeping those temperatures up. we're in the low 50s in morgan hill. and as we check out san francisco, such a beautiful start. it's nice to be able to see a clear sky. and that's what also gives us slightly warmer temperatures, like what we will see going into today with upper 60s and even a few low 70s there. but the temperature spread out once you get away from the coastline in the inner bay, oakland will see a high of 77, but if you're in concord, it is 89 degrees 87 in morgan hill and also 87 in santa rosa. tomorrow. also very warm for the valleys. while the coastal areas will be chilly only 64 degrees for half moon bay. while we'll be in the mid 80s for the south bay. and then looking at saturday, we're going to be cooling off a few degrees and looking ahead for san jose. are

yeah, exactly. it's a refrigeration truck, by the way. so there's some fluids out there and that's part of the cleanup. westbound coming in from casa de fruta in toward highway 101 and gilroy. that direction closed at ferguson road. i wasn't sure if you could get to ferguson road, but the speed sensors do seem to indicate folks are using that as your alternate bloomfield to the south of there. and those will be options for folks coming in now for the most of the rest of our viewers, everything moves very smoothly. that first slowing has gotten to 101 in san jose, right above where it says san jose. there a smooth flow of traffic throughout the east bay. the bay bridge toll plaza. no major backups, but ginger over in castro valley. we did have a marker. that's your story. thanks, mike. and we are following that breaking news story. that story as well, here in the east bay. this one has to do with a massive fire at a popular neighborhood gathering spot. today in the bay's bob redell is live for us. this is near the lake chabot public market in castro valley. so, bob, are firefighters making any

progress here? sadly not in terms of saving the lake chabot public market, which you can see behind me. they have made progress in the sense that this fire is contained. it's not quite out yet, but it's not at risk of spreading. but unfortunately, the structure and the businesses inside, they're destroyed. and as i mentioned, they were able to keep the fire contained to the market and prevented this from spreading to an auto repair shop next door. and homes on the backside. this, if you're not familiar, is a huge loss for the community battalion chief, who was raised here in castro valley. he's with the alameda county fire department who ate lunch here a lot, says this market, which is family owned, was a pillar of castro valley fire. start around 220 this morning. it grew so large the fire department had to call for a third alarm. firefighters were fighting on the inside for roughly an hour that first hour, but eventually they had to pull out as the roof

began to collapse. and as we're getting some sunlight here, i can see that the roof, looks like it's completely gone. inside were six businesses, according to the public markets website. and the signage i'm looking at outside. there was a butcher, a barbecue place, a milk and cookie bar, a poke bar, a ramen place, and a boba tea place. all of that now gone in. one of the owners is, you know, childhood friend of mine. we grew up together, you know, went to high school together. so this is a pinnacle in the community, it's really sad to see this happen. we, we tried the best we could. we were in there for about an hour on the interior working, and the roof started to give way, and we had to pull out. an investigator will be out here later to try to determine the cause of this devastating fire. but the battalion chief you just heard from tells us it does not appear to be suspicious. they said that when they were inside fighting, they did see a source of gas that was fueling the fire. don't know if that was the cause or if that was just something that happened after the fire started to

destroy things in this building, a lake chabot road, which is right behind where the camera position is, is shut down for a couple of blocks in each direction of the public market. again, the lake chabot public market, a loss this morning, fire department alameda county fire department said they tried to do their best, but this fire was just too big. but they were able to keep it contained to just this structure and not have it spread anywhere else. reporting live here in castro valley, bob redell. today in the bay. thanks. a lot, bob. a little bit of silver lining there, but still a lot of damage. tough one there. well, take a look at this new overnight. the manhunt for the escaped inmate comes to an end. so in a video, the san benito county sheriff says daniel lopez zavala was captured last night in san jose. now, who you were seeing there? the woman that is his girlfriend, luis mendoza. she's also arrested and is believed to have helped him during that escape. the two were found in a hotel room. you might recall zavala escaped from the

san benito county jail on tuesday morning. the county sheriff says lack of staffing contributed to him being able to escape, and we continue to wait on the jury. in former president donald trump's first criminal case, all eyes on the courthouse in new york city. meanwhile, scott mcgrew all kinds of claims and counterclaims flying back and forth on social media. and some of it. marcus. not true. i know that's shocking. i will get to those in a moment. as far as the case goes, the judge in the case has told trump to stick around the courthouse in manhattan as the jury enters its second day of deliberations. trump, of course, charged with falsifying business records to cover up a hush money payment made to an adult film star to silence her claims ahead of the 2016 election that they had a had an affair years earlier. the jury is asked to go over the testimony of the first witness in the case again, david pecker from the national enquirer. pecker testified he made a deal

with trump to quash bad news about him, including another alleged affair with the playboy model. so social media, many people making a big deal this morning that the judge in the case did not allow the jury to take a written copy of the jury instructions into the jury room. the jury instructions are not a secret. you can print them out off the internet, but new york law has a peculiarity. it does not allow juries to take the instructions with them. they can ask all the questions they want. they can ask them to be reread, but they don't get a copy. so it's the state and not the judge that made that decision. there's also a lot of confusion over what the jury has to agree on. remember, in new york, business record fraud is a misdemeanor unless you fake the records in an attempt to cover up another crime, and then it's a felony. when considering the linchpin crime, the jury has to be unanimous that trump is guilty, that he faked business records.

what's unusual is the second part a juror has to think trump meddled in the election by committing any one of several crimes that'll bring it up to a felony. it doesn't matter which crime. that's a technicality. trump keep stoking the confusion. nobody knows what the crime is because there's no crime. nobody knows what the crime is. the da didn't name the crime. they don't know what the crime is. that's what the problem is. all right. let me put this another way. jurors have to be unanimous that trump committed a crime by falsifying business records. that's did he do it? prosecutors say trump did it in order to cover up important information from voters. that's the why. and election meddling brings the crime up to a felony. the how did he meddle could be any one of many different actions, so long as he took one of the actions, this one or that one. the jury doesn't have to agree on which one. so long as they

agree it happened. president biden is largely been refraining from commenting on the case in order to avoid feeding the incorrect claim that his justice department is behind the prosecution. it is not biden and vice president harris in pennsylvania wednesday looking to boost the black vote. today 1 in 3 women and more than half of black women of reproductive age live in a state with an abortion ban, a trump abortion ban on and if he wins a second term, i promise you he's going to go even further. so all of this is to say, who sits in the white house matters now. we continue to wait for word from the jury. of course, we will break in with a special report the minute ginger, we know the jury has a verdict and we will be watching closely for that. scott. thank you. now, the trial involving the man convicted of attacking

speaker emerita nancy pelosi's husband continues today. opening statements in the state's case got underway yesterday. prosecutors wasted no time getting to the most graphic evidence. they showed video to the jury of david depape hitting paul pelosi in the head with a hammer at his san francisco home . the convicted attacker is public. defender did not dispute the evidence, but instead asked the jurors to consider depapes mental state. at that time, prosecutors say paul pelosi could take the stand as early as tomorrow. now. depape was previously sentenced to 30 years in prison for the attack as part of a federal case. well, now to a live look in san jose, where today, city leaders are issuing a new call for greater transparency when it comes to hundreds of millions of dollars in recent homeless funding. a new state audit finds san jose not adequately accounted for spending $300 million over the past several years. later today, two council members, including
