at san antonio. as we look at the maps and we saw the progress there with the flatbed tow truck, you see, it's jammed up from about shoreline. if you get over to bayshore road, that will take you past the scene. same thing for middlefield, el camino, or 280, which keeps you completely clear that one section of the peninsula continues to be jammed up for shoreline down to san antonio road north of there. everything's okay. and then north of that and east of that, everything looks really good for the morning commute. carrie. that's a beautiful drive. a beautiful look at the bay bridge toll plaza with really no backup. just a pause to pay for some electronically, of course. yeah, that's a reminder to grab the sunglasses as you're heading out. temperatures starting out a little bit warmer. upper 50s and low 60s as you head out the door. and our high temperatures will be back to what you saw yesterday. very warm for the inland areas and nice and cool and comfortable for the coast. in parts of the inner bay. we will talk about a cool down in our weekend forecast that's coming up in a few minutes, as well as what to expect with some of the events going on around the bay area back to you, ginger marcus. thank you carrie. we

begin with breaking news in santa cruz this morning, where it has been a chaotic night. we're taking a look at some video here where the situation appears to have been getting more tense this morning. law enforcement officers are trying to break up a blockade at the west entrance to the uc santa cruz campus. now, earlier this week, pro-palestinian activists set up the makeshift blockade and as a result, that campus was closed. classes have been held virtually, witnesses tell our crew at the scene. some arrests have been made, but that is not yet confirmed. the chp has, however, already declared this an unlawful assembly. multiple law enforcement agencies are assisting our tom jensen is there. he will have a live report in our next half hour. well, our other top story for you this morning, this is the landmark verdict against president, former president donald trump. now, jurors in new york yesterday convicted the

former president on all 34 counts. this was falsifying business records. all this to keep quiet. his alleged affair with adult actress ahead of the 2016 presidential election. now, his attorney, todd blanch, tells today trump plans to appeal that verdict, but he says he's ultimately not surprised by the decision. we fought this case for over a year before we started trial in april, and a lot of what came into trial and evidence and a lot of what didn't come in is, is a reason why the jury obviously reached the verdict. they did so shock and surprise at what happened, not not really. i mean, i think we didn't know. he also says some of that evidence includes tax records, which were not allowed. he says that the judge limited trump's team in cross examination today in the bay's brie jackson live in washington this morning for us. okay, so, bree, what's the reaction this morning on capitol hill? good morning marcus. so former president trump and his allies

it's accountability. it's exactly what america needs right now. republicans are rallying around their presumptive gop nominee. i can't believe the hoax this sham, this absolute injustice justice system. in a statement, the biden campaign said it respected the rule of law. both presidential candidates are using trump's legal battles to gain support. americans are divided over the former president's conviction. i think that if we have a president that's possibly be a felon, i don't think that's good for the country. i'm not sure that it may might sway it a little bit for trump because of us seeing how unfair that was to him. voters will have their say in november, and trump's lawyer says an appeal is coming soon. the former president is set to be sentenced on july 11th, and that's just four days before the republican national convention. marcus and i guarantee folks

vacant roles. but that doesn't mean job cuts. that doesn't mean layoffs or cutting existing jobs. it means not expanding our workforce at a time when we simply can't afford to. and once that budget is unveiled, city council members will hold a vote. the following week. the budget is supposed to be adopted on june 18th. tomorrow those state of the city address will be at 9 a.m. at happy hollow park. happening tomorrow. hawaii is expanding its power shut off program in anticipation of a dry summer, which could pose a risk for wildfires. hawaiian electric says starting tomorrow, it may preemptively shut off power in areas which have long periods of forecasted high winds and dry conditions. this comes after that deadly fire ripped through the island of maui last august. the islands affected in the shut off are maui, oahu and hawaii. hawaiian electric says that it will expand that program to all high risk areas on islands it serves. taking a live look now

thing out pleasant hill and what to expect. there's going to be a fairly quick warm up here, going from low 60s at 7:00 to a noontime temperature of 83 and still heating up even more. so from there, we're going to have a hot end of the month, but then we welcome in june with cooler temperatures, we'll talk about that coming up in a few minutes. and the one major issue in the bay area right now here, northbound 101 at san antonio road, northbound down to one lane. still, because of those cones, we cannot let traffic through, but it does look like they're making progress. some vehicles are clearing from the middle of the freeway. i see caltrans crews moving around as well. over on the left side, they're inspecting that yellow rig to see if it can be towed, to make sure it can be safely pulled from the area. still just one lane open. i'm waiting for an update from chp. thanks, carrie and mike. wall street is set for a mixed open this morning as investors gear up for a key report on inflation.

you know, sometimes people say it's worth it. no it is. i'm talking to myself. bring the pepto. no, give me the food. give me the medicine afterwards. but you know what? also, some big things happening across the bay area this weekend. the largest latin music festival up in northern california is coming to napa valley. the new event is called la onda. and some of the world's best known acts are set to take the stage on annabelle no me digas no. the weekend festival brings together 30 musical artists spanning multiple genres, including mana, who you just heard. the band's manager jason gardiner, is putting on the event, and he says he's always wanted to create an event for napa valley's flourishing hispanic community. la onda kicks off tomorrow and lasts until sunday. now, tickets are available through the festival's website, website. yeah, we just had bottle rock. yeah, a lot of music. that's great. napa is becoming the spot. hello well, you know the music, the dancing is going to be hot, but will the

weather. yeah, going to be perfect. you know, last weekend when we had bottle rock, we were just saying, wow, what a nice weekend for memorial day. this weekend is going to be pretty nice too, whether you're doing that or a lot of the other events, the temperatures are coming down, so we're not going to see the heat. we are expecting today. it's going to be in the upper 70s and it's nice during the middle of the afternoon on sunday, maybe a touch warmer, but overall lots of sunshine and san mateo. we've got the county fair once again. it's going to be in the upper 60s both saturday and sunday. starting out with a few clouds early, but it will be clearing out as we go throughout the day. now tonight we've got the giants game out at oracle park, and here's where we have some really cool weather. we're going to see temperatures in the mid 50s and some gusty winds, and make sure you're bundled up for that. that's after hitting a high temperature of 66 for today. san mateo will see a high of 73 and will be in the mid to upper 80 for the inland east bay. really

just depends on where you are. so what kind of weather you'll experience and you'll want to be dressed and maybe even prepare for it all as you drive around. this weekend will be slightly cooler with a high of 73 in fremont and 75 in livermore. in the north bay, it will be in the upper 70s and low 80s. and then on sunday we're going to see more of those same temperatures. and the good thing is that the low is happening this weekend and not in the middle of next week when our temperatures spike. it's going to be so hot for a couple of days next tuesday, wednesday, possibly thursday, we'll be in the upper 80s and even mid 90s. so we're going to see those temperatures heating up quickly, going through next week. but once again we can enjoy the nice and mild weather as we welcome in june. and then it'll really feel like june for the middle of next week with our temperatures heating up in san francisco into the mid 70s. mike, you're saying that the cones are still out on the highway, still across highway 101, leaving only one lane open. all these other lanes
6:21 am
are blocked. but notice all the emergency vehicles, the chp vehicles and the tow trucks have been clearing from the area. caltrans crews are still on scene. i did see a couple of crews circle through the area. no word on when they're going to reopen the other lanes. one open northbound 101 at san antonio road and the onramp still blocked. they're checking out the condition of that rig trying to pull that from the roadway. i hope to have more detail from chp soon, but we'll look at the map because it's friday. we have a lighter volume, so still slow only from shoreline up to that scene at san antonio road north of there is fine. you can access bayshore road, el camino or middlefield to get past that scene. also, 280 remains clear for the south bay all the way up through san francisco. a few scattered crashes, nothing major. again, the major crash north 101 out of mountain view and into palo alto. look only 19 minutes for your drive out of contra costa county on vasco road down to 580. that's a great easy drive. the metering lights were activated at the bay bridge, and there's a very mild backup. only slow up the incline. back to you. thanks a lot, mike. 612 this morning

professor jackson, you are a professor at san jose state university talking about political science. you guys have been following this for a very long time, and we're focusing on the fallout this morning. how are you expecting this? where will the cards fall? well, i don't think that this guilty verdict is going to have much impact on trump's core supporters. however, we're going into a general election in november, and he really needs to be thinking about what new voters he can attract. i have a hard time believing that this is going to have a positive impact or attract new votes to him, at this point. hum. well, we talked about it in the last hour. you said those who have allied themselves or aligned themselves with with the former president, you don't expect their votes to change. but when it comes to independent voters, those that are kind of on the fence or more moderate republicans, do you think that this will have a significant impact? i think it
6:37 am
certainly could. and this election is going to be decided by a small number of voters in a few key states. and remember, we have a number of republican voters who actually supported nikki haley or even some of the other candidates in the primaries. for those voters, for the independents out there, particularly for republican women voters, i think we might see some some lessening of support. okay, okay. well, we're talking about the fallout, but we're also we've got our eyes on july 11th. that is the sentencing date that's been scheduled. very significant because it's just days from the national convention, republican national convention. what do you think when that sentence comes down? what do you think that will add to this? and do you have any thoughts on what that sentence will even be? well, we'll have to wait and see it could be anything from probation to up to four years in prison. now, nobody's really thinking that it's going to be the maximum penalty, so it's probably going to be something on the lesser end. but again, in
6:38 am
the eyes of the nation are going to be on that sentencing date. and then we've got the republican national convention right. then certainly trump's supporters are are not going to be happy, whatever the sentence is, and i think, you know, we're going to see some, some protests and some engagement around both conventions this year. very, very interesting. i know the former president making his way to the bay area next week, and i know we also talked about it in the last, last hour. you're watching out specifically for the polls and how those might change next week in the weeks after. yeah it's interesting, up until now, it's all been hypothetical. you know, some polls have asked, well, what if he's convicted? would that change your vote? it's really hard for people to process that now. it's real. now we have a verdict. people who haven't been paying a lot of attention, they're going to see that headline and it's going to start to influence how they're thinking about this election. all right. thank you very much, doctor melinda jackson, professor at san jose state university. political science. fascinating things. thank you so

jacket weather, especially when you add in the wind and also mostly sunny. if your weekend plans include the beach, it's going to be in the upper 60s in santa cruz and our overnight temperatures in low 50s, and we should see that fog rolling away . and mike, you're tracking the on the peninsula. one situation. that's right. the big one on 101 northbound. we continue to see more progress. i just saw them. they put down more absorbance over the last 15 minutes. they've letting it soak into whatever fluids on northbound 101. then they swept it up. it looks like there we go. look at that. they're picking up the cones now. they'll have to pick them up. and this is the really critical part because folks are itching to get back at speed. you see how quickly they gun those engines. so be careful for the crews as you pass them. this is just one example. as we look at the map we're showing you north 101 is starting to back up with more volume hitting the area. so from about 237 passing by 85 and shoreline up to the scene at san antonio road, which the on ramp is still blocked because they have that rig in

the roadway, everything else will be moving smoothly once they clear those roads. those cones from the lanes of northbound 101, everything else in the east bay is moving very smoothly. it's lighter friday traffic and hopefully soon lanes of northbound 101 will have more open, and the on ramp at san antonio road is still closed. so use the embarcadero onramp. that's the next one to the north. back to you. thanks, mike . a grieving mother is opening up about the death of her bay area born daughter two decades ago, ahead on today in the bay, dateline revisits a case that captured the nation. hear what the victim's mother is now saying about a fateful encounter that led to that murder. plus, an invasion of dinosaurs here in the east bay, including one that is been brought back to life. stay with us. you're watching today in the bay

years ago. it was given new life this year, thanks to a group of women. women, rather, i should say, who banded together to honor another young woman born in los gatos who was brutally murdered. all of them were stalked by the same man. i said this guy has done this before. he'll do it again. and he will kill someone because he almost killed me. keith morrison talked with terry hall. she was living in the bay area when her daughter, kristy johnson, disappeared after going to meet

a man for a bogus movie audition in southern california. the man who killed kristy could have faced the death penalty now. morrison says a plea deal means her murderer may soon be paroled. for some reason, they decided that they'd be okay with life, with the possibility of parole after 25 years, making the assumption that he'd never get paroled anyway. and under the rules that existed at the time that he was first convicted, that might have been true. but then they changed the rules so that somebody over the age of 50 who had been behind bars for 20 years was entitled to a parole hearing, and that was him. and he was very, very skillful at working these systems. so that's when the women decided if we don't do something, this psychopath is going to be on the streets again. so watch dateline tonight at 9 p.m. to hear the full story surrounding the death of kristy johnson and how women victimized by the same predator stood up to make sure he never struck again.

well, happening today, getting an early start on pride month, which is right around the corner. some bay area cities are flying their flags starting today. that includes the pride flag raising at the historic beacon grand hotel in the heart of san francisco's union square. that's going to happen at 10 a.m. later across the bay at 1130, oakland leaders, including mayor tsingtao, will raise the pride flag at city hall. all right, ginger, i don't know if you realize this, but today, well, actually, it starts tomorrow. but international dinosaur day is coming up, and many people are so excited about that. it's really a day to get out and celebrate ancient natural history. i can hear all the kids saying, duh! today in the bay's bob redell is getting there ahead of the celebration. he's live this morning at the alameda county fairgrounds. and bob, i know people there trying to bring some dinosaurs back to life. you've got someone special to meet. they are trying. they are trying. here at jurassic

first of all, crystal is very well trained. i can see they must have been frightening for her. the first time she held a baby dinosaur. but what is the. this is a real behavior that you would have seen in a six week old. sure, yes, because we know that. because we were all there, right? yeah, yeah. trixie is a little bit of a diva, but she loves, you know, attention. and she's super docile, as you can see. so, yeah, she's super fun to come and play with and pet. so as we look at video of jurassic quest, you we're talking about this earlier. you have a lot of kids. i'm assuming boys and girls are more and girls. yeah. really. okay when i was a kid it was mainly. oh really. and so and they come and they try to show you up. is that correct. oh for sure. yeah. they love telling us. dinosaur facts will be at the dinosaur table and they'll be like actually i think this is a mosasaurus skull. and we're like, you're right. okay. and if the wrong do you throw them out? no we encourage, you know, learning and just growth here. so yeah we love it. and there is some interactive, dinosaurs that you can ride in another building. but we're in the main building here, building a so you can come

going on now on a one on one? here's what i believe is happening. they still have one lane open. just one lane. these folks are ready to remove the cones. but on this side i've seen them move around. they just cleared another vehicle with a flatbed tow truck and they're positioning, i believe, to clear this on ramp at northbound 101 and san antonio road. once they clear these vehicles, then i believe then i believe they're going to reopen these lanes with the cones. so it's going to be a gradual process over, i'm hoping less than a half hour, maybe 15 minutes. no confirmation from chp. all i know is what i see. and of course, from 20 years of experience. back to you. i'll take your word for it. mike. thanks. happening now, today is the deadline to get your hands on unclaimed money from the state. it was set aside in 2022 to be given out as inflation relief payments. the people who qualified could receive up to about $1,000. they were supposed to receive it by direct deposit or in the form of a debit card. however, 40,000 people or around 40,000 people have not yet been paid any money not claimed. by
