[ laughter ] gosh, it was a wild day here in new york city. new york city got our biggest earthquake in over a century. yeah. while everything was shaking, times square elmo was like, "whoa, the drugs are hitting different today." [ laughter ] no one was ready for an earthquake. the last thing new yorkers expected to see this morning was the statue of liberty twerking. [ laughter ] ♪ [ cheers and applause ] but this is good. is that twerking? [ laughter ]

but this is good. the nypd said that the earthquake did not cause any damage to the subway. yep. apparently, all that damage was there before. so -- [ laughter ] what a week it's been, new york. on wednesday we had floods, today there was an earthquake, on monday there's going to be an eclipse. the craziest of all, last night the mets won. [ cheers and applause ] unbelievable week! yes! new york, for the win. yeah, the earthquake was pretty wild, and after it happened everyone's phones got emergency alerts. did you get that? yeah, check this. first it said, "new york was struck by a 4.8 magnitude earthquake. remain calm." yep. then it said, "the earthquake was a 4.8, but on tinder it says it was a 6.1." [ laughter ] then it said, "bro, the marketing for 'godzilla x kong' is out of control." [ laughter ] and finally, it said, "the earth saw everyone simping the moon and sun and said, 'remember me, bish?'" [ cheers and applause ]

yeah, here's what i was doing during the earthquake. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: i just finished my card tower. now to take a sip of champagne while admiring my fine china. [ laughter ] [ rumbling ] woah. was that an earthquake? crazy. >> steve: dude, did you feel that earthquake? [ laughter ] [ clattering ] >> jimmy: yeah. >> steve: see you out there. [ cheers and applause ] >> steve: did i do that? >> jimmy: meanwhile the local news has been covering the earthquake nonstop, and it seems like everyone has asked the same question. watch this. >> you just kind of have to ask everyone, "hey, did you feel it? did you feel it?" >> i didn't feel it at all, susan. did you feel it? >> we did not. >> more importantly, did you feel it? >> did you guys feel it this morning? >> did you feel it a lot? >> did you feel it? >> did you feel it? >> did you feel it? >> did anybody feel it? >> did you feel it? >> do you know anybody who felt it?

[ light laughter ] >> jimmy: well, guys, as i mentioned, the solar eclipse is on monday, and a lot of companies are trying to get a a piece of the publicity. i saw that moon pies came up with a special edition treat. i saw sun chips has a new bag of chips. but some other brands tried to get in on it too, and they seem kinda desperate. >> steve: really? >> jimmy: yeah, for instance, tito's said, "you want a a blackout? we'll give you a blackout." [ cheers and applause ] ♪ >> steve: wow. >> jimmy: next up, planet fitness said, "just walk into our locker room if you wanna get mooned." [ laughter ] after that, boeing said, "looking for something crazy in the sky? hold our beer." [ laughter ] then toys "r" us said, "we also disappear then reappear every decade."

[ laughter ] "look, it's bong lightyear." [ laughter ] yeah in this movie, 40-year-old andy is asked to leave the toy store because he's creeping out the kids. [ laughter ] and finally, guys, yesterday a a southwest airlines flight was about to take off from texas when one of its engines caught on fire. [ audience ohs ] it was scary, but thankfully all the bathrooms overflowed and put everything out.

>> aw shucks, thanks. >> jimmy: happy you're back here. you know, you were in the building not too long ago. you made a cameo on "saturday night live" with sydney sweeney when she hosted. what was that like? >> it was pretty epic. i mean, i've always wanted to do "saturday night live" my whole life, so to be, obviously, in your old halls, it was pretty crazy. >> jimmy: yeah, and were you nervous at all doing it live, or was it exciting? >> well, i knew i was gonna do the monologue, so sydney and i kinda planned this little bit. >> jimmy: you didn't know you were going to be in the sketch? >> no, the sketch was told to me by lorne, like -- you probably do a better lorne impression than i do, but we're sitting there having a cocktail below the bleachers. i'm thinking we're kind of done, and then he's like, "you know, i have this idea. you know, like maybe, maybe you're in the next sketch?" and i'm like, "wait, what do you mean?" and he's like, "you know, we'll figure out a way to kind of into the sketch." and he just -- i -- 15 minutes before, i'm like, "do i have a a line? what am i doing?" [ laughter ] >> jimmy: that's really -- that's live tv. >> it was the pace of it that was very exciting. look, i don't know if i nailed it, but hopefully i'm invited back. >> jimmy: no, you nailed it.

[ cheers and applause ] they love you. they love you. you know, i'm a fan, but you're in this new film, "hit man" and you are getting great reviews, buddy. congratulations on that. >> thank you. >> jimmy: the movie is -- certified fresh, rotten tomatoes. it's a fresh tomato. you also co-wrote it with the director richard linklater, who is one of my all-time faves. i love that guy. he's been on the show before. >> yeah, rick and i, i did one of my first movies with rick, "fast food nation" when i was like, you know, a 14-year-old in austin. and, you know, so we got to write this thing together. and, you know, it's been kind of crazy because, like, actually one of -- i got to collaborate with him on a movie called "everybody wants some!!" which is like the spiritual sequel to "dazed and confused," if anybody has ever seen it. it's a great movie. >> jimmy: it's a fantastic movie. [ cheers and applause ] i love that movie. >> rick actually came on your show. >> jimmy: yeah. >> probably, i don't know, nine years ago. >> jimmy: yeah. >> and he was talking -- he showed a clip from "everybody wants some!!" on the show, and

you called me out in the clip. and it was like the greatest day of my life that jimmy fallon said my name on the show. so, yeah, i just -- this feels very full circle that i'm actually invited this time. was in texas. when it premieres, you'll be out there and that exact same day, you're being inducted into the texas film hall of fame. i mean -- [ cheers and applause ] that's got to mean something. >> no, it's awesome. it's awesome. i mean, obviously born and raised in austin, texas, and, you know, the theater that i'm being inducted into this thing is where i did my first musical. so, i was like, i did "sound of music" and i did "music man," "oliver." and so it's all happening at this theater that i get to kind of get this award at. so it's all very full circle. and to do it with richard linklater who is, you know, a -- >> jimmy: legend. >> a hero and now a friend. it's great. >> jimmy: it's the best. we've talked to matthew mcconaughey, who is also inducted, he's a very -- he's a texas guy himself. >> i mean, mcconaughey is texas. >> jimmy: mcconaughey is texas. [ laughter ] he is, yeah. have you ever met matthew mcconaughey? >> you know, i -- mcconaughey and i are now pals. but my first time meeting mcconaughey was out at linklater's ranch.

so, you know, richard linklater has this great ranch in bastrop, texas. and that's where we kind of rehearsed "everybody wants some." that's where i have a lot of really special memories. so, i was on christmas break. i wanted to go out to rick's ranch with my dad, and just like go walk around the property. and so we're taking a walk around the property, and i say, "hey can we go to the library where we kind of rehearsed all that stuff?" he goes, "you know, i think matthew is in there." and i said, "matthew?" i'm like, maybe. maybe it's mcconaughey. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: yeah, you want to be cool about it. >> so, i -- you know, i kind of opened the door, and there's this kind of sliver of light that hits this guy. and he's like, "hey, hey, whoa, hold on." [ laughter ] >> jimmy: wow! [ cheers and applause ] that's great. i never heard that impression of -- >> "wait, hold on, hold on." so, he was in there writing "green lights," his book at the time, so he goes, "well, i know you. i know you." he's like, "glen, glen. yeah, i know you." and then my dad did not see him

yet, so he steps out into the light -- out of the door and then he goes, "now, who are you?" and my dad goes, "oh, i have a a picture of you next to my bed." [ laughter ] >> jimmy: all right, dad. i think we drank enough, dad. i think we drank enough. >> i look at my dad, i'm like -- >> jimmy: "what are you talking about. >> "stop doing this, dad. whatever this is. stop." >> jimmy: what was he talking about? >> there was this university of texas magazine called "the alcalde." mcconaughey is on the cover. so he goes, "no, no, i have the university of texas magazine next to my bed." and matthew goes, "that is my favorite photoshoot i have ever done in my whole life." and he grabs him by the shoulder and they become best friends. it was great. >> jimmy: he is a charming man. >> very charming man. he's a great man. [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: i like that guy. let's talk about "hit man." this movie is inspired by a a true story. can you set up what the -- >> so, i found this article about this guy named gary johnson who was a a psychology professor who sort of moonlights with the police department as an undercover -- he's basically a fake hit man for the police department.

when people are trying to kill their husbands, or their wife, or their business partner, he's the guy standing across from you that you think is a hit man, but he's actually a cop. >> jimmy: so, you're confessing that you want to murder your spouse and you recorded it all. >> exactly, it's all sting operations. but the thing that made this guy different, was that because hitmen don't really exist, he puts on all these disguises, and accents, and all this stuff in order to complete your fantasy of what you think a hit man is. so, i get to play all these different characters. >> jimmy: i mean, you're phenomenal in this. it has so many characters. look at all these characters that you play in the film. this is -- [ light laughter ] i mean, this is fun. >> i mean, this guy is especially nightmarish, whatever that is. >> jimmy: yeah, whenever that guy walks in the room i'm afraid. did you get method? did you get really into these characters? >> you know, so as i'm kind of trying to develop these characters, i would sometime, like, walk outside in new orleans, you know, where we shot it with all these different, you know, hair and costumes and all that stuff.

so, i went to this, like, coffee shop that was near my house, and someone ended up recognizing me and they go, you know, "are you glen powell?" and i had these in and i go, "yeah." [ laughter ] >> jimmy: wait, look at camera one there. >> this is my new dental work. >> jimmy: that's fantastic. that's good. that's a good fake teeth right there. that is fantastic. >> you know, a lot of people when things start going hollywood they get work but usually -- >> jimmy: it's not that work. you got to save that. that's good. congrats on the great reviews. i want to show a clip. here's glen powell in "hit man." take a look. >> you're not a hit man. you can't be. you've got puppies. you've played with kids. you've opened every door for me tonight, and yet you kill people for money? >> chivalry may be dead, but i didn't kill it. >> and i tried looking you up, but nothing. it's like you don't even exist. >> i guess i'm just your fantasy. >> okay.

[ cheers and applause ] glen powell. you are a very successful actor and man, a lot of people may not know this, but we actually got our start together and -- >> i had a feeling you were going to bring this up. >> jimmy: well, back in the '90s, we starred in the police drama called "precinct 62: lethal justice." [ light laughter ] audience barely remembers it. >> i remember, yeah. >> jimmy: you remember it? >> it's a gritty cop show if you haven't seen it. we play two detectives would didn't see eye to eye. >> jimmy: it was a good -- it was a good show. the only issue was when we

taped it, they forgot to turn our microphones on. [ light laughter ] >> yeah. >> jimmy: so, they never recorded any of the audio for the show. and so, the director just had his kids revoice the entire thing. [ light laughter ] so, it was us acting but with their voices. >> nepo babies. >> jimmy: that's right, yeah. it was nepotism at its worst. and the director said that no one would notice. but i think you can tell. well, we actually have a a surprise for you. >> what? >> jimmy: we actually did a a little digging ourselves. like little meerkats, we dug in and found a clip from the show. here's a clip from one of the episodes. take a look at this.
