"early today" starts right now. good morning, i'm frances rivera. just days after a former president was found guilty, another historic trial begins today. jury selection will soon get under way in delaware where hunter biden will be in court for federal gun charges. it's the first time in american history that the child of a sitting president will be on trial.

nbc's alice barr joins us now. good morning. alice, what are the charges against the president's son? >> good morning, frances. hunter biden faces federal charges related to the purchase of a gun back in 2018. he is accused of lying on a government form and of buying and owning a gun while using illegal drugs. biden has pleaded not guilty to the charges. this trial could get very personal. the president's son has been open about his past struggles with addiction. prosecutors have been permitted to delve into biden's history of drug use and are expected to call his past romantic partners as witnesses. this all comes days after donald trump was found guilty of federal charges, the trump campaign says it's taken in more than $52 million in donations since that historic verdict. new polling taken just after the verdict shows a majority of american adults surveyed approve of the jury's decision. in another poll, 11% of republican voters and 26% of

independent voters suggested they are now less likely to vote for mr. trump. and there's also more fallout on capitol hill. eight gop senators signing a letter saying they will no longer cooperate with democrat legislation or the approving of judicial nominees. as the hunter biden trial begins, people familiar with the matter tell nbc news the biden campaign plans to keep quiet soon after the trial starts. president biden will be headed overseas and he will be giving a speech on thursday to mark the 80th anniversary of d-day. frances. >> alice barr for us. thanks. breaking news this morning, mexico has elected its first ever woman president. the mexican electoral institute projects claudia sheinbaum was won the presidency. she will also be mexico's first jewish president. polls long predicted her win. she is a climate scientist by profession. as a member of the ruling morana party she was the chosen success

remains the elimination of hamas as an organization.letterman ha >> reporter: israel and hamas are under growing pressure to clinch a ceasefire deal with thousands of protesters taking to the streets of tel aviv over the weekend demanding that prime minister benjamin netanyahu say yes now to a deal to bring home the israeli hostages being held in the gaza strip, but at the same time netanyahu is also being squeezed now there the other side, by far members of her governing coalition who do not want to see an end to the war and they are threatening to bolt from his government which could lead to its collapse if he says yes to the deal. now, hamas for its part is speaking positively about this deal. a senior official saying that they do want to see the kind of proposal that president biden laid outcome to fruition, but that first they needto see all of the details and they also want to make sure that israel is really on board with the proposal for a permanent ceasefire and end to the war that president biden laid out in his speech. the white house for its part saying over the weekend that if

hamas agrees to this deal, they fully expect that israel will go forward with it, too. >> josh, thank you. now to akron, ohio, where police say at least 25 people were shot at a large birthday party. detectives believe someone drove by and fired shots at the party from their vehicle just after midnight on sunday. some of the chaos was caught on a doorbell camera, and the video may be disturbing for some viewers. a 27-year-old man was killed, two other people were in critical condition sunday. no arrests have been made. police are asking the public to come forward with information that could help their investigation. on sunday water service was restored to many businesses and residents in downtown atlanta after a two-day outage caused by two water main breaks. many areas still have a water boil advisory but the city's

mayor says one of the water mains has been repaired. two hospitals were impacted and a megan thee stallion concert was rescheduled. the mayor declared a state of emergency and crews are still working to fix the second pipe. a fast moving wildfire in northern california known as the corral fire has now scorched over 14,000 acres. the fire prompted evacuations east of san francisco over the weekend, which has since been canceled. authorities say the blaze is now 50% contained with more than 400 people fighting the flames. and at least two firefighters have been hurt. dry conditions and gusty winds are fueling the fire and so far the cause is unclear. the summer heat helping fuel those wildfires. nbc meteorologist violeta yas is tracking the temperatures. hi. good morning. >> good morning, frances. yes, more heat is not what we want to hear with about 20 million people at risk here through thursday with afternoon highs expected very comfortably into the triple digits from 100 degrees to 118.

now, that heat is going to be centered across california today where we have heat advisories and heat watches in effect or rather heat warnings and then we have watches that now include parts of nevada and into the four corners region as we head into the next couple of days. at least as far as today is concerned, we will already be into the triple digits near parts of texas, lubbock specifically, on west into parts of nevada, including las vegas and then for tomorrow that heat really starts to expand. so those triple digits then will include del rio and roswell, west into phoenix and las vegas, durango 85. so a lot of temperatures well above average for this time of year and, again, this is not going to be a one or two-day thing, that heat is going to stick around for the next several days at least in through friday in places like las vegas and tuon will becs where we wil

comfortably into triple digits with a lot of heat in store the next few days. and that's a look at the weather across the country, frances, back over to you. >> violeta, thank you. there is a growing problem in the groves that fill america's orange juice glasses and it's leaving the breakfast staple more expensive than ever. >> reporter: in florida kyle story is smack in the middle of an industry in crisis. >> we try to be optimistic, we're farmers, we're optimists by nature. >> reporter: but he's all too aware of the problem. orange juice prices hitting all time highs, up 56% just this year with little relief in sight. production in florida challenged by extreme weather events like hurricane ian in 2022, harvests have been declining in recent years. >> we face a lot of challenges beyond our control, weather being the main one.

just here in recent months we have had severe drought in most of the state. >> reporter: and the even bigger squeeze comes from further south in brazil, the largest orange producer in the world, where volatile warmer weather means this season's crop will be the smallest since 1989's and down 24% from last year. >> is it an overstatement to say there is a crisis in orange juice production? >> well, to put it bluntly, this problem is not going to go away for -- in the short term, it's here to stay. >> reporter: during lean seasons manufacturers rely on frozen stockpiles to meet demand. now industry experts say juice makers may need to adjust their blends with other fruits as growers are hoping to get orange production levels back to normal. >> we're focused on deploying the proper therapies in the groves to make the trees as healthy as we can so that we can produce not only quantity, but we want to produce the quality that we know we have. >> reporter: and hopefully help

loss. >> certainly insurers are using technology and innovation to make sure that they have all the variables possible to best underwrite. >> reporter: eagle view is one of the companies providing aerial images to the insurance industry, but they say their drones are only used to check out damage quickly when someone makes a claim. ceo pierce doormeyer says the technology benefits the consumer and insurer. >> this imagery whether coming from an airplane or drone is something that it's going to be part of the decision to potentially cancel a customer or raise their policies or potentially lower them. >> reporter: consumer advocates say if you receive a nonrenewal letter contact your insurance company, ask to see copies of those images and time to correct whatever problem was identified. >> i don't know anyone who doesn't have dirt on their roof. >> reporter: that's how this man fought back, paying $500 for an independent roof inspection. he says safeco has since
