here as they were working to get that work done. another fire broke out late yesterday. this is on a popular road between here and tracee and livermore along patterson pass road, closer to livermore, and a popular one lane winding cut off road that commuters often use trying to get around gridlock into livermore in the south bay. firefighters were on it quickly, though, and with higher humidity and lower winds than we had over the weekend, they were able to stop it at just 115 acres. no homes lost, nobody hurt. almost all of the fire was in low burning light grasses, a stark contrast to what happened here on saturday, as gusts to 60mph, according to cal fire, fanned the flames into an uncontrollable frenzy and unfortunately, the couple here lost their home of 30 plus years and most of their belongings, cal fire information officer said. fortunately these fires did not burn in areas with heavier fuels like pine and oak trees, which are also going to start drying out quickly in these rising temperatures. it's

meteorologist kari hall of course, tracking those conditions, firefighters, they're going to face some warm temperatures today. carrie, is this going to be the hottest day of the week? it today and tomorrow. it really depends on the spot and where you are. but we are all clear. and there's going to be such a big difference from yesterday to what we'll see today. we're keeping the wind, but we're also adding in the heat and today we will have a heat advisory in effect for these areas in orange that includes the north bay away from the bay in the east bay into the tri-valley, as well as the delta and the south bay will be under a heat advisory starting later this morning. here's what we're headed. there will be a moderate heat risk for much of these areas shaded in orange. as our temperatures go to the low 90s, we're up to 98 degrees in concord, 101 degrees in vacaville and fairfield, while in san francisco, it's also going to be heating up with a high of 81 degrees. and in the mid to upper 90s in the north bay tomorrow. also, just as hot. but in some of the areas like fairfield and vacaville, we're

still in the triple digits, but we're seeing the temperatures going up a degree or two for san jose. so we're looking at a high of 92 degrees there, 95 in los gatos and mostly upper 70s for the peninsula into san francisco . we'll be tracking that. we'll talk about when we eventually cool off. that's coming up in the full microclimate forecast. all right, carrie, thank you. now let's take a live look this morning in redwood city. this is where firefighters remain at the scene following that eight alarm fire. that building under construction yesterday. now crews right now watching for any of those flare ups last night firefighters removed the building scaffolding because of its threat to nearby homes. now, communities in redwood city, atherton, palo alto and los altos are still under evacuation orders. that fire was just reported 1015 yesterday morning and we actually brought that to you live with our breaking news coverage as it was happening, 104 units in that 179 unit inside that building, they were

under a microclimate weather alert as high heat ramps up across much of the bay area, san jose will be under a heat advisory that starts at 11:00 and continues throughout the day , and our temperatures are headed for the upper 80s and low 90s. there will be some spots reaching the triple digits. i'll show you that. coming up in the full microclimate forecast 101 is the freeway. but look at those temperatures kerry had here. palo alto 101 moves smoothly southbound with these headlights, northbound with the tail lights going up towards san mateo and san francisco. a smooth drive on the peninsula
5:45 am
right now. we'll see how things are picking up over in the east bay. coming up. thank you very much, kerry. mike, we do have breaking news just into our newsroom. take a look at your screen. the vallejo fire department battling a two alarm fire. it is happening on alameda street near florida street brand . new photos. the fire department just posted on x. you see the massive flames tearing through the house. fire department of course. still on the scene. not clear if anyone was hurt or what caused the fire. we will of course continue to follow this fire that is happening in vallejo this morning. new overnight while you were sleeping, the u.s. successfully tested an unarmed ballistic missile launch. this happened at around 1 a.m. at vandenberg space force base on the central coast. now, the air force global strike command says that that launch meant to verify the safety and readiness of its weapons systems. now, it is one of two launches scheduled for this week over at vandenberg. 5:45 right now, president biden will talk this morning about a

new executive order restricting the number of people who can apply for asylum at the border and scott mcgrew. this is actually an idea that started with republicans. absolutely it did. good morning to you. it's almost identical. in fact, it's something that then president trump tried to do when he was president and the democrats called foul. so too did the courts. it's also very much like the plan that republicans put together in their very tough border bill, that they ultimately abandoned when trump told them to. now, we haven't seen the text of the executive order, but if it's similar to the republicans bill, it would allow the president to limit the number of people applying for asylum at the border. if that number rises above a certain point. the original proposal was 5000. now, understand, our border system hits that number most days. so this would be in effect, a permanent limitation at the border and the toughest border policy from a democrat in year in years. rather, here's
5:47 am
the thing though about executive orders. they happen all the time and they get a lot of press, but they're often ineffective and when they're not, when they actually do something, they're often not legal. congress did not pass the law to restrict the number of migrants seeking asylum. president's taking action when congress doesn't sounds like a take charge idea, but it's generally not how our system works. we very much saw this with obama and daca. obama was a huge proponent of the executive order. congress failed to take action to protect dreamers, so obama just did it anyway. now, rules by presidential fiat is something to think about because you might support one president taking more power than congress had in mind, but you might not support it with another president. constitutional scholars worry about this consolidation of presidential power. democrats in the house are going to join their fellow democrats in the senate, pushing for a new law to protect an adult woman's access to contraception. republicans will likely block it in the
5:48 am
house vote against it in the senate. and of course, that's the whole idea. democrats trying to put republicans on record as voting against birth control, an american woman's access to birth control codified in the supreme court. griswold versus connecticut. but the legal reasoning behind it is very similar to the legal thinking behind roe, which, of course, was overturned in the dobbs decision. justice thomas, writing for the dobbs decision, said in future cases, we should reconsider all of this courts substantive due process precedents. biden white house continues to push for a cease fire in gaza. neither hamas nor israel have committed to it, even though hamas agreed to something earlier and the current plan, the white house says, was israel's idea. the proposal on the table is nearly identical to what hamas said it would accept just a few weeks ago, and it is now time for them to act. it is time for them to accept the deal. it is time to finalize this agreement and put
5:49 am
an end to the suffering of israelis and palestinians alike. well, let's end with something lighter. a congressman angrily speaking out about the trump verdict doesn't sound amusing, but it is. if he brings his son to work and lets him sit behind him in the house chamber, representative john rose of tennessee, now he's on the left, told his six year old son that his younger brother was probably watching and that he should smile for the camera so his little brother sees it. here's a little bit of congressman rose's very serious speech. regardless of one's opinion of the current republican nominee, we'd be well served to remember the long and cherished tradition we have in this country of settling our political differences at the ballot box. no word if guy's little brother sam, who's three, saw the video, but rather i suspect he did. laura. yeah. no kidding. and none of us heard anything that he said as we were watching that adorable, very serious. all right. thank you very much, kids. well happening

today, amtrak celebrates a milestone at four bay area train stations. leaders cut the ribbon on recently completed work to meet required federal accessibility improvements. bay area contractors performed about $20 million of work at the coliseum, fremont, hayward and martinez stations. it brings the four stations into compliance for people with disabilities. amtrak's chief accessibility officer says it helps make sure there's accessible for all any passenger that has a disability, regardless of their disability or ability to be able to maneuver from street to the platform, onto the train and from the train back to through the station and back to whether it be a bus or a vehicle. today's ribbon cutting and news conference takes place at 2:00 this afternoon at the martinez station, san francisco city hall lit up with pride. mayor london breed and the lgbtq community kicked off the city's 54th annual pride month. yesterday.
5:51 am
the mayor talked about a series of programs supporting the lgbtq community, but says she's most excited that san francisco is the first in the country to have an office of transgender initiatives. she also said the city is working to create a new building for the first ever lgbtq museum in san francisco. interesting wahab it. well, the nfl offseason underway and players are enjoying certainly some downtime. well deserved. but we'll tell you who isn't taking any time off so far. christian news check. she's at fashion designer and wife of san francisco's 40 niner fullback kyle use check. yeah, kristen's been very busy at work. you know, one of her recent designs was for handmade. it was a jacket for the winner of the indy 500. we're talking about josef newgarden. she actually posted that video on instagram. and it is just one of her many fashion designs that have gone viral. you may remember she made that puffer jacket for celebrities like taylor swift. we saw some simone biles in them , taylor lautner and as well as kelly clarkson. christian
5:52 am
actually stopped by kelly clarkson's show and the two shared their unique first encounter. take a look. the last time we saw each other, this could not be a more sad story on my part, but i had found out there was a whataburger that opened in vegas. yeah, and i'm texan. well, do you know i sprinted to you in my slippers? i was like, kelly wants a vest. what so i'm in my hotel room. i mend my slippers because i had the worst blisters that week. i just am not cut out for the heel life. yeah. no. so i'm wearing the slippers and i sprinted to you on this trip to vegas to meet me at a whataburger. she was like, she. she was like, hey, where should we meet? and my manager was like, we're at whataburger. yeah. like well, it was close to me. so i sprinted there. i was probably huffing and puffing. use. shaq recently scored a licensing deal with the nfl, and we all are excited to see what designs she has in store this season. she's come up with some good stuff. now you can watch that entire interview on the kelly clarkson show. that's at 3:00 right here on nbc

bay area. no spoiler alerts for you, but you can see a cameo from one certain 40 niner that will be followed by nbc bay area news at 4:30 for you this afternoon. it's pretty exciting. but i mean, i think a lot of people want to see some of her things go mainstream. yeah. you know, or at least morning team. yeah, yeah. no kidding. good morning. run with your slippers. we'll kick them off and find the flip flops by this afternoon. yeah. it's going to be a hot day. so we're starting out mild. but then the temperatures heat up so quickly. you want to make sure you're prepared for all of the changes. we'll see especially away from this view. looking at the golden gate bridge where yesterday we couldn't even see anything because of the fog. now the fog is gone and you know what that means. it's going to be a warmer day. we're right now at 50 degrees and it is 55. in oakland . we're at 57 degrees in san jose and upper 50s for concord. then going into the afternoon, we'll see this heat advisory going in effect for all of these areas shaded in orange. so
5:54 am
notice that it does not include the coastline or the inner bay. it's all of our inland valleys. so that's where our temperatures will be much hotter this afternoon compared to yesterday where a lot of us were in the 70s. today we're talking 90 degrees in san jose, 92 in morgan hill and 92 in cupertino. we'll be up to 100 degrees in antioch today, upper 90s for much of the tri-valley and then for oakland. we're looking at a high of 88 degrees there today. so definitely some very intense heat, especially for people without air conditioning. and we're going to see a high of 88 in redwood city and 74 in daly city, san francisco. also warming up too. we're looking at a high of 80 downtown, 81 in the mission district and some upper 70s for the outer sunset, 97 today in napa, as well as santa rosa and 95 in ukiah. after our high heat today, it just repeats tomorrow. we're still looking at some highs over 100 degrees for
5:55 am
fairfield, upper 90s for livermore and concord, and much of the north bay will be in the 90s. so we're still going to continue with the moderate heat risk of how this may affect your health. we're going to really have to take it easy and drink lots of water, even if you don't feel thirsty. and then we're going to see temperatures coming down slightly for the coast and inner bay. but we're still going to see some 90s for the interior valleys. san jose is looking forward to a nice and mild weekend after seeing those 90s will be in the low 80s for saturday and sunday, so it does look like it improves significantly. we may have some more high heat ahead for next week, but we're just trying to make it through today and tomorrow. with those highs over 100 degrees in a few spots. upper 80s tomorrow, and then we'll be in the low 80s for friday with a comfortably warm weekend ahead. mike, how's it looking now in the south bay? you know we have some slowing here. typical for 101 northbound but then atypical. i want to show you it's relatively light in the south bay. but coming in
5:56 am
i saw some more slowing around. bailey. it's starting to ease up. there are no incidents reported on either. our cat here or even one farther south. for monterey, we do have slowing typical from san martin up into morgan hill. nothing dramatic, so we'll keep our eyes on that. meanwhile, we have a typical little build for 880, actually a very mild build right now, passing san mateo and the dumbarton bridges for the nimitz. this is where that fire in vallejo we were talking about just a few minutes ago. it's on the alameda street just off of highway 29. not a major issue, but again, we're following that because it is a house fire and highway 37 does show the slowing typical same thing for highway four in toward the crash at pleasant hill. but notice the lighter traffic through contra costa county and of course, the backup at the bay bridge right here. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. well, happening. now, if you live in san jose, the price you pay for your trash to pick up anyway. well, it could soon increase. the meeting is set for today to discuss a 6% rate increase. this is proposed by the city. if approved, that increase will go into effect on july 1st. the city council will
5:57 am
have a final say and needs to approve that increase. they say that plan to address those questions at today's meeting. there is much more head on today in the bay, including an early start to fire season ramps up across the bay area, the new blaze igniting not far from one of the biggest fires so far this season. the big question will crews be able to keep up with team's rapid? with temperatures rapidly heating up? but a reminder for you, nbc bay area news streams 24/7. you can watch us whenever you like roku oron
