shoring up. get ready for multiple days of hot temperatures. meteorologist kari hall is tracking these dangerous conditions as we issue a microclimate weather alert. our firefighters are aware of the weather patterns and the wind patterns, and usually they they know, generally speaking, the time periods throughout the day when there's typically going to be more more chance of a fire being reported. the hotter temperatures fueling an early
6:01 am
start to the fire season, the new blaze igniting as crews face a couple of tough days ahead on the peninsula. the flames are out, but some residents still evacuated from their homes. we actually speak with one of the first witnesses at the scene of that massive construction blaze in redwood city, this is today in the bay good morning. i'm marcus washington, and i'm laura garcia. this morning we have got live team coverage on the rising temperatures and the fire dangers. meteorologist kari hall tracking just how hot it's going to get. but first, thom jensen is live in tracey, where crews are still working to put out the corral fire. how's it looking there, tom? reporter good morning to both of you. well, it's looking pretty good. the winds have definitely died down even compared to yesterday, and nothing like it was here over the weekend. and we're expecting to hear more good news considering the advancement on the fire that they've made over
6:02 am
the firefighters have made over the past couple of days with the winds down like this, the temperatures down, even though they're coming up, we might have 100% containment. there's a fire briefing in the next hour. we hope to attend and get some more information for you on. but there was more evidence of fire danger. late yesterday, a fire broke out along patterson pass road near here, that's a popular one lane winding road between tracee and livermore used by commuters avoiding interstate gridlock. and a grass fire started right along patterson pass road. thanks to higher humidity and lower winds, they were able to stop it. firefighters were at 115 acres, almost all of the fire was in low burning light grasses. no homes lost and no injuries. a big difference compared to what happened here on saturday. gusts to 60mph, according to cal fire, pushed the roaring fire. the corral fire across thousands of acres and on a day on just one day and forced the evacuations
6:03 am
of homes in its path. fortunately, the couple on here got out alive unhurt, but they lost their home of 30 plus years and most of their belongings. cal fire information officer said these fires burn mostly in the light grasses and not the trees that can really start roaring. now. they're turning their attention to the heat that's coming and the fire danger is ahead. the rolling hills of the bay area. you're going to start seeing more fires like this. the corral fire is now more than 85% contained this morning. and like i said, we could have full containment. we're expecting at that fire briefing at seven this morning and mop up, possibly just over the next couple of days. but the focus is now is on the next three days here, with temperatures approaching and topping triple digits, the grasses and the trees are only getting drier and more dangerous. and cal fire is reminding people to sign up for those safety alerts on your phones. the notifications of
6:04 am
those red flag warnings all of the dangers, especially the mandatory evacuation orders that you'll get on those alerts like these folks did. some of them, like the people who lived here, just barely getting out in time and losing, losing their home. but they're here to talk about it and they're unhurt. so again, fire danger coming. triple digits. so we're all watching the next couple of days. yeah. live in tracey thom jensen nbc today in the bay. definitely. if you get those evacuation orders, you don't have to get out quick. you've got to move. thank you very much, tom. meteorologist kari hall, of course, been tracking those conditions for us firefighters. they're going to be facing a lot of hot temperatures and the potential for fire. yeah, that's definitely a concern. as these temperatures heat up, it just dries out the grass and the vegetation even more as we take a live look outside in dublin. it's kind of a hazy start. we're seeing the orange sunrise and we're going to see the wind picking up as we go throughout today. not as strong as it has been, but any kind of a breeze, especially if you do get a fire
6:05 am
going, may cause it to spread quickly and we're looking at more of a northerly wind, which tends to be drier, also tends to be hotter. at least the coastline will have a bit of some relief, but for the inland areas, when those winds pick up to 25 to close to 30mph, we are going to have that concern of any fires that do start could spread very quickly. with the heat advisory in effect for these areas in orange, for the inland east bay, the south bay, as well as the north bay valleys, temperatures in the 90s for today and under this map you can see the color contours. this orange indicates a moderate risk of this heat affecting your health. so we are going to see temperatures in the mid to upper 90s for the north bay this afternoon. as hot as 101 degrees in vacaville. and fairfield. we'll be tracking this. we'll talk about when we get a break from this coming up a little bit later. all right, carrie, thank you. well, now to a live look this morning out in redwood city. this is where firefighters remain on the scene following that eight alarm fire. that building, it was under construction. so crews right now
6:06 am
they are still watching for any of those flare ups. i can tell you last night, firefighters remained there at the building. they removed the scaffolding because of its threat to fall on nearby homes. at least eight homes are still under evacuation orders this morning. now, the fire was first reported at 1015 yesterday morning. we actually brought you live breaking news coverage of it all as it was happening. 104 units of the 179 inside that building burned in that massive fire of an affordable housing project along middlefield road. the cause is still under investigation. now, if you were watching our live coverage yesterday, you probably saw scott mcgrew, who just happened to be in the area yesterday reporting for us live. and while you were reporting, i mean, we saw that fire increase in size and intensity. there were you just happen to be in the air. just happened to be there. i was taping a podcast in menlo park, could smell smoke and sort of tracked it down, called it in and watched as it went from one corner of the building to engulfing the whole thing. it was just a volcano. it was tremendous. and the thing
6:07 am
about it is, you know, i heard the talks in the newsroom. they were like, well, scott's here at that fire. it's bigger than we thought. yeah, because at first it started small, but then what you saw, you saw those embers flying in the sky. your son, a firefighter. you are not right. yeah. how did you feel about that? so i literally have now ordered a helmet from amazon to carry in the trunk of my car because the embers coming down there, you see some of it on television. these were landing on people's roof. they were landing on us as well. it was just a such a threat. it is such a miracle. look at that. those things were glowing when they landed. it is such a miracle that no other homes, to my knowledge, burned down. because we saw the quimby fire. we saw the home depot fire, right? we saw the santana row fire that took other houses and other structures out just an absolute miracle. but it was just raining down around us and you actually saw one of those fires kind of igniting that field. you were standing nearby. we were watching, and neighbors would come over with hoses and try to put them out. so there were
6:08 am
neighbors out there alongside the firefighters as they built you know, did the big fire neighbors were spraying their their, their water hoses and, yeah, their, their hoses on their roofs, etc. all right. well great job yesterday and thanks for. i enjoyed it. what you did all right. glad it turned out okay for everyone except that building. yeah thanks, god. well, just into our newsroom, people living in pinole may have trouble getting a hold of 911 right now. the city's police department sent out a post on ecs overnight. it says that 911 and pinole non-emergency lines are down. calls are being answered by the contra costa county sheriff's office. they're then transferring that information to emergency dispatchers. it's unknown what is the cause of the outage. also, just coming in to our newsroom, the votes are still being counted in india following that nation's general election. early indications suggest the current prime minister, narendra modi, will be elected to a third term. but the opposition party is said to be gaining ground on modi's hindu nationalist party. election workers are now busy counting

about 650 million ballots. president joe biden is expected to sign a sweeping new executive order, which would allow him to temporarily shut down the us mexico border. the white house is expected to announce that new action today. the closure would only take place if illegal border crossings reached 2500 a day. homeland security says currently the daily number is more than 4000. the border would only reopen when the number falls below 1500. the new restrictions are similar to ones former president donald trump tried to enact in 2018. 608 for you this morning, a stark reminder with the hot week ahead of us, each year, about 37 children die from heat stroke. this after being locked in a hot car. yeah, no one wants to think about it. you have to remember to never leave kids or pets inside of a car. not even for a few minutes. meteorologist kari hall shows how hot it can get so quickly inside of a car, with high set to soar to 100 degrees

in the valleys today. remember this saying beat the heat. check the back seat. if the air temperature is 100 degrees in just 30 minutes inside of a vehicle, it is 134 degrees in an hour. it's a sweltering 143 degrees even in the shade. even with the windows cracked, there is no safe amount of time to leave a child or a pet alone in a vehicle. heat stroke occurs when the body temperature reaches 104 degrees, and a body temperature of 107 degrees can be fatal. a child's core body temperature may increase 3 to 5 times faster than that of an adult. so here's a tip if you put your child in the car seat, also, drop your phone or your purse back there to, especially if you're out of your normal routine and may forget the child is with you. i'll have an update on the heat wave coming up. now.

6:21 am
picks up as we go into the afternoon. san francisco 22 mile per hour wind gusts and it will be just as high coming through the tri-valley. and so with the breezy wind and the hot temperatures, it kind of acts as a hair dryer, especially with the northerly wind which tends to have lower humidity. that's going to dry out the vegetation even more. and the reason why we are under the concern that we could have a high fire danger for today, as well as the next few days. our temperature trend in san jose goes from 7:00 at 58 degrees to 9:00 at 68 degrees. you can see just how fast those temperatures heat up going into late morning into the afternoon. eventually hitting 90 degrees. and we'll see a high of 98 in concord, 101 in fairfield today. and much of the north bay in the low to mid 90s. even upper 90s for santa rosa. underneath this map you can see the color contour. this shows the risk of how this heat may affect your health the heat risk index. and so we're looking at mostly for
6:22 am
parts of the north bay with those temperatures in the upper 90s and close to 100 degrees, there will be a moderate risk of this impacting your health. and in san francisco, we're in the upper 70s. so it's still going to be warm there with no air conditioning, but we will be cooling off in the next couple of days, at least for the coastline. it happens much more gradually for the inland areas and lafayette. over the next ten days. we're going to see temperatures in the low 90s, but then look at thursday, big drop. we're in the upper 70s for a high, and it will be in the mid to upper 70s throughout the weekend and gradually warming up again next week. and on average, we are looking at some more comfortably warm weather. but today and tomorrow we're dealing with this extreme heat, so we'll need to take it easy and stay hydrated. it will be better for the weekend and mike, you also need sunglasses to shield your eyes. folks, here we go. bay bridge. so coming over from san francisco into the east bay, a lot of sunshine in your face and your eyes. windshield flap it down here. but behind you, if

that scaffolding was a concern. we're showing you some video of when part of the building scaffolding came down, what was left of middlefield junction, what would have been a 179 unit affordable housing structure here in redwood city. the scaffolding knocked down for safety concerns for nearby homes along pacific avenue. now, the threat of collapse was one of the reasons collapse of the scaffolding was one of the reasons that people were told to evacuate 100 homes initially in the north fair oaks area. 92 of those came home before nightfall and eight remained evacuated overnight. now, late last night, the threat of hotspots or possible flare ups were still seen, but firefighters quick to put them out overnight as well. mercy housing, the nonprofit developer of what was supposed to be this two building affordable housing structure, remains committed to completing this project. it's been under construction for over a year, but it has been in the works for

6:36 am
and earlier this year. we've got some hot temperatures headed our way. we do. and that dries out the vegetation even more. and in even just a little bit of a wind with this high heat and that fire danger really increases significantly. and as we're starting out this morning, it is all clear as we're heading out. but we are under a microclimate weather alert due to the high heat. but we're also dealing with all these fires that we've had, and some of that smoke is drifting into parts of the coast and the bay with moderate air quality today. it's also been moving down to the south bay, where we're also looking at moderate air quality. and if you're sensitive to that, if you have breathing problems, you should definitely limit your time outside. and we're going to see temperatures heating up quickly. right now it's in the upper 50s in redwood city. but as we go throughout the day, we'll be in the upper 70s at noon and headed for the 80s. and looking at the wind that will be increasing as we go throughout the day, 15 to 25 mile per hour winds as that he kicks in that will be away from the coastline where we will have the heat advisory in effect and our

that westbound flat section and also down out of san leandro for the nimitz. no surprises there. same thing for the build for the south bay. right here, 101 through san jose. typical build. we'll see 87 kick in over the next couple of minutes. in fact, we might be right now a nice drive throughout the dublin interchange. that's great stuff. we look ahead toward the athletics at coliseum. there's a game here tonight 640 and about the same time also in oakland, not at the coliseum, but as we talked about raymond field, laura told you about the ballers playing tonight. now they only seat about 4000 right now. but that will be a different flow of traffic off of grand avenue. so note that just after 630 over there right now we have that build over at the bay bridge. and no surprises as far as the east bay back to you. thanks so much. we're going to continue to follow those developments in redwood city. that's where the raging fire destroyed a construction site. well, now the nonprofit developing that site is asking for donations. but who are they? how consumer investigators take a deeper look in what? pardon me in washington, president biden

number of people who can apply for asylum at the border. scott mcgrew joins us now. this is actually an idea that started with a republican. absolutely. it started with republicans. it's almost identical to something then president trump tried to do when he was president. and democrats, democrats rather called foul. so too did the courts. it's also very much like the plan republicans put together on that very tough border bill, until they ultimately abandoned it when trump told them to. we have brand new information at six, nbc news has learned the details . the idea will shut down the acceptance of legal asylum seekers entirely. if the number of people crossing illegally rises above 2500 a day, that's even tougher than the original proposal. before congress, it was 5000. now, understand more than 2500 try to cross without authorization most days, so this would be, in effect, a permanent legal limitation of asylum at the border. and the toughest border policy from a democrat in

years. now, as we wait for more detail, which we expect will come at 11 california time, let's talk more about executive orders in general. they happen all the time and they get press, but they're often ineffective. and when they're not, when they actually do something, they're often not legal. congress did not pass a law to restrict the number of migrants seeking asylum. presidents taking action when congress doesn't sounds take charge, but it's not really how the system is supposed to work. we saw this with obama and daca. obama was a huge proponent of the executive order. congress failed to take action to protect dreamers. so obama did it anyway, but ruled by presidential fiat is something to think about because you may support one president taking more power than congress had in mind, but you might not support it with a president you didn't vote for. constitutional scholars worry about this expansion of presidential power. democrats in the house are going
6:46 am
to join their fellow democrats in the senate, pushing for a new law to protect an adult woman's access to contraception. even republicans will likely block it in the house and vote against it in the senate. and of course, that's the whole idea. they're trying to put republicans on record as voting against birth control. an american woman's access to birth control was codified in the supreme court case griswold versus connecticut , but the legal reasoning behind it similar to the legal thinking behind roe, which of course was overturned in the dobbs decision. justice thomas, writing for the dobbs decision, said we should reconsider all of this court's due process. precedents, including griswold, lawrence and obergefell. griswold is your right to birth control. lawrence is same sex relationships, and we're hopeful is the same sex marriage decision. let's end with something lighter. a congressman angrily speaking out about the trump verdict doesn't sound funny, but it is. if he brings his son to work and lets him sit

behind him in the house chamber representative john rose of tennessee. he's on the left, told his six year old son that his younger brother was probably watching and that he should smile for the camera so his brother sees it. here is a bit of congressman rose's very serious speech. regardless of one's opinion of the current republican nominee, we'd be well served to remember the long and cherished tradition we have in this country of settling our political differences at the ballot box. no word if guy's little brother sam, who's three, saw the video, but marcus, i suspect he did. i think we all did. all right. it's going to be on social media for him to watch for years to come. thanks, scott. well, look, you know, we've been reporting this morning about what's going on in redwood city. firefighters remain there at the scene. this is following that eight alarm fire here to what was supposed to be an apartment building. well, it was under construction. a nonprofit is developing the apartments. this is at the middlefield junction in redwood

city. now, the organization is asking for donations. our consumer investigator, chris comer, joins us now to tell us more about that group. good morning. the organization is called mercy housing california. its website says it has more than 150 properties around the state, and more than 20,000 people live in them. it's part of a larger nonprofit organization that catholic nuns founded in 1981 to help create affordable housing. mercy housing takes donations, and in response to the fire, the nonprofit created a new middle field relief fund and added this web page for donations from people like you. well, if you know me, you know that whenever someone's asking for our money, i want to know how they're spending it. so we reviewed mercy's tax returns, which the irs makes public. late last year, mercy housing told the irs it collected $77 million in revenue. it says it spent 90% of that money on affordable housing
6:49 am
. here's the rest 9% to administration and 1% to fundraising. so is that any good? well the watchdog website charity navigator gave mercy housing a 97% positive score. the only real demerit was for not posting a copy of its tax return on its website. chris chmura today in the bay. we're trending this morning. even though football season is still months away. 140 niners wife hardly taking any time off fashion designer christian music hard at work, expanding her already exploding brand. she's a wife of 40 niners, fullback kyle juszczyk. she's made puffer jackets for celebrities like taylor swift and simone biles, taylor lautner and kelly clarkson, and you can watch her interview today on the kelly clarkson show at 3:00 right here on nbc. bay area no spoilers, but you may see a cameo of a certain 40 niner. it's followed by nbc bay area news at 4:30. just thinking about are you watching the birds? well,
6:50 am
because i was just thinking like, oh, i wonder what kind of jacket i would look, i was thinking, i was thinking like, what kind of jacket? you don't need a jacket. you don't need a jacket today. no. puffer. it's gonna be hot. it's like the fashion shows, you know? you do. summer in the spring. oh, he's thinking ahead of season. yeah. so, you know, i'm thinking for fall. okay, well, today. today. yes in oakland it's going to be in the upper 80s this afternoon. and some spots will reach into the triple digits. but we're staying nice and mild here at the golden gate bridge. such a different picture from yesterday. and that shows just how much of a change our weather will be underway as we go into this afternoon. so we are all clear starting out in mountain view. temperatures in the low 60s at noon, we're already at 80 degrees. we'll be cranking up the ac with our temperatures in the upper 80s through the afternoon, and there will be a light wind as we zoom in to the south bay 90 in san jose. we were in the upper 70s yesterday, 93 in gilroy, and we'll see some upper 90s for parts of the east

bay, concord, 98 degrees, also 98, in livermore, antioch 100 degrees and 86 in hayward. for the coast, we're in the low 70s in half moon bay. very comfortable. but you do want to be careful and never turn your back to the ocean, because those waves will be dangerous today and in palo alto we'll see a high of 90. while in san francisco. so we're up to 81 in the mission district and north bay. highs in the upper 90s from napa to sonoma, santa rosa up to 97 degrees tomorrow. still pretty hot where we're looking at a lot of 90s from napa valley to the tri valley to silicon valley. we're going to see those temperatures in the 90s for tomorrow as well as thursday. it's coming down just a few degrees, and we're catching some relief for the peninsula as well as the coastline, but still up to 90 in livermore. in san jose, after having a couple of days with 90 degree heat, we will be in for a much nicer weekend. still a little warm, but comfortably warm with a high of
6:52 am
81 expected on saturday and then heating up for the middle of next week. so our temperatures across the bay area will range from 100 degrees today and tomorrow to some low 80s as we go into the weekend. while san francisco will hit the low 80s today, we'll bring you back to the 60s on thursday as that ocean breeze picks back up and it will continue into the weekend with mid to upper 60s for highs. now mike, you're seeing a couple of new concerns here. yeah. in addition to all these arrows we have here because of your normal slowing you typically see throughout the east bay at this time we're going to the commute direction over here in novato south 101 slowing into petaluma as well as slowing approaching this critical junction with 37 feeding in out of vallejo, slowing down out of nevada, and a disabled vehicle very close to that interchange. and so that's at least a distraction. there may be one lane affected meanwhile opposite your commute, but slowing nonetheless. it will be eastbound 80 across the carquinez bridge, heading into the north bay out of the east bay. we do have slowing right
6:53 am
near the toll plaza or adjacent to the toll plaza. i should say there may be one lane blocked there as well. it's been there for a little while. meanwhile the rest of the bay shows a pretty smooth drive, the south bay really kicking in now, back to you. all right. thank you very much, mike. well, happening now if you live in san jose, the price you pay for trash pickup may soon increase. a meeting is set for today to discuss a 6% rate increase proposed by the city. if approved, the increase would go into effect on july 1st. the city council will have the final say and needs to approve that increase. they plan to address any questions at today's meeting and next, a look at our top stories here on today in the bay, including bay area warming up. and those temperatures are fueling an early start to the fire season. we're going to talk about that new blaze igniting as crews face a couple of tough days ahead. plus the evacuation still underway in redwood city after that massive blaze there yesterday and the damage done to an affordable home project. we'll be right back

welcome back. 656 on your tuesday morning. we're moving you forward with a look at the top stories on today in the bay, starting with breaking news on the peninsula firefighters this morning. still at the scene of that massive construction fire. here's a live look this morning in redwood city. that's where teams are still monitoring the hot spots. last night, firefighters removed the building scaffolding because it threatened to fall on nearby homes. and several of those homes are still under evacuation orders. that fire started a little after ten yesterday morning, and we brought you live breaking coverage for several hours. this is an affordable housing project along middlefield road, and we now know that more than half of that nearly 200 unit building was destroyed. investigators say that it started on the fifth floor, but the exact cause is
6:58 am
still under investigation. also breaking right now, a vallejo firefighter injured after battling a fire at an abandoned home. injuries are not expected to be serious, but the fire started about 230 this morning on alameda, near florida street. firefighters posted photos on social media and saying the flames actually spread to a nearby home, damaging the attic. seven people in that home are now displaced, so far, there's no word on how the fire started. let's head to tracee. this morning. a live look for you. this is where firefighters are still monitoring the weekend wildfire that destroyed one home. now within the last 30 minutes, we got an update on the corral fire in the area is 90% contained and with a microclimate weather alert from extreme heat moving in, firefighters will remain on high alert. now, here is the latest sign of fire danger out there. the grass fire last night. this was near the altamont pass on patterson pass road. and it burned about 100 acres and never threatened any of those homes
6:59 am
nearby. i know, carrie, you've been monitoring all that, too, so we're going to see some heat. what about the wind? is that going to be strong today? it's still going to be breezy and it's going to be hot. so we're dealing with kind of a hairdryer type situation as the temperatures are up to 100 degrees. that's what's going to feel like out there when those breezes pick up for the afternoon. just as hot tomorrow. but then we are getting a little bit of some relief in time for the weekend. and in san francisco, still a wide range in temperatures will be in the low 80s there, but we'll drop it back to the upper 60s from thursday into the weekend. and we're looking at the south bay build. it's on. it's not quite as severe as we tend to see approaching the end of may, so we're looking at a lighter drive right now later in the commute. kicking in as we hit the summer vacations. i think summer camps affect folks drive to the office as well so we might see later commute start to build. but right now the build is across the san mateo bridge with no surprises, the volume now starting to slow on the flat section and of course we have the bay bridge, but at least there's visible movement. a lot
7:00 am
of sunshine too. there's visible movement there. wow. yeah, that's interesting. wishful thinking. yeah. hey, you know the today show is just ahead. but today in the bay actually continues at 8 a.m. on roku, pluto and other streaming platforms. as we're talking to pg&e about, they're rolling out new technology to try to prevent rolling blackouts during the height of summer. a representative joins us to explain how it all works. you can also watch online at nbcbayarea.com or easily with your smartphone app. take us with you on the go. yeah, miss a moment, miss a lot. we'll see you on pluto. look, that doesn't today over there. today today. so next it is going to be a scorcher. >> it is. tens of millions in the grips of the nation's first heat wave. it is june 14th.
