expect serious heat across the bay area today. details on the new advisory, the east bay and what a recent run of extreme
5:01 am
temperatures means in the big picture. plus, leaders in both parties making their way to the bay area. vice president kamala harris arrives this morning. donald trump makes this stop tomorrow. we are live breaking down their travel plans. this is today in the bay good morning. i'm marcus washington and i'm laura garcia. let's start out with our top story this morning. everybody's talking about the heat. and we are in a microclimate weather alert with another day of extreme heat. we're ready for it. parts of the east bay are actually under that heat advisory. we have a live look for you this morning in walnut creek. hopefully. let me just tell you, temperatures are expected to reach the triple digits there. yep, a hot one last night. actually, people in the east bay in walnut creek enjoyed a warm night downtown after a scorching day. some locals say sundown only provided some relief the past couple of days. it was. it was fairly cool, but today was the first
5:02 am
day where was actually really warm and you see me wearing my nice little shirt. you know, it's hot. so i'm just enjoying the weather. with a heat advisory in place, medical experts advise people to be aware of the signs of heat exhaustion. also, make sure that you stay hydrated east of livermore. that huge grass fire burning 14,000 acres over the weekend is now nearly 100% contained. the fire destroyed one home south of tracee. meteorologist kari hall is here right now and carry the extreme conditions when it comes to that heat. continue to be a concern. absolutely. i mean, today we're going to have another hot day and in some spots it may be even hotter than it was for the middle of the afternoon. here's a look at where we have that continued heat advisory and the excessive heat warning for solano county over toward the sacramento valley and san joaquin valley. now we're also going to see our morning start much warmer than it was yesterday. at this time, we're already at 66 degrees in san jose, and it's 70 in concord, 71 in martinez. so we don't have that opportunity to let the
5:03 am
windows open and let the house cool down. after yesterday's heat. although it is much cooler in san francisco, where we're in the low 50s, we're headed up to 80 there today. and a lot of triple digits here from the north bay, santa rosa, up to 100 degrees 100 in concord and morgan hill will also see a high of 100 degrees. and that will have a moderate impact on how this affects your health. that heat index risk is going to definitely be a factor today as we deal with these hot temperatures. now turning to our climate in crisis, the month of may marked the full year of global record breaking heat, and it's had a big impact on health of the american. and a new ap analysis finds that extreme conditions last summer led to the deaths of more than 2300 people across the u.s. that's nearly five times the number of all of weather and climate related disasters combined, and the highest number in 45 years. for the first time, we're seeing
5:04 am
where climate change is having the biggest impact on temperatures. the nonprofit climate central applied their climate shift index to separate changes when it comes to daily weather, and the fossil fuels impact. the dark red dots show the strongest connection to climate change along along the gulf. last month from florida to texas, and the group says that some of the most impactful changes happen at night nighttime warming is a fact just about everywhere, and that has a really important health consequence, right? it's you know, you don't get an opportunity to recover from the heat of the day. you know, we know that we can open the house up at night, turn the fans on and you get the cold air in there. but if it's still hot outside, that's one of the things that can turn an environment from one where you don't need air conditioning into one where you really do need it. so how can you keep your house cool during this summer heat without driving up the power bill? consumer investigator chris chmura has a simple diy

5:07 am
permanent ceasefire, specifically a protest scheduled at the intersection of manchester and ocean view in oakland, another in san francisco on valencia and 19th that will begin at 12. she then leaves san francisco at 330 in the afternoon. manny uchitel, the owner of manny's cafe in the mission, is co-hosting the event . tickets range from $500 to $25,000, and it's not the first time the vice president has paid a visit to manny's cafe. there she is. in a video posted on the cafe's instagram account talking with the owner now former president donald trump is expected to arrive in the bay area tomorrow. his fundraising event will also be in the city, hosted by investors david sachs and chamath palihapitiya. they're the co-hosts of the popular podcast all in now. we're told tickets for that event start at $50,000. a 30 foot chicken is expected to make an appearance throughout san francisco tomorrow in opposition to donald trump. here's our political analyst, larry

gersten, with more on where the race between trump and biden now stands. the fights for the independence and the fights for the swing state votes. and after that, you look at each side where they have strength and where where the other doesn't. it's tough. it's tough to say which candidate would win. right now it's pretty even. although joe, we must give trump credit for being ahead in a number of those swing states that are always contested. now we will be covering both visits and bring you updates both on air and online. it will be a busy next couple of days for us here in the bay area marcus and laura sure will be. it seems to always be. thank you ginger. figueroa for you right now a live look on capitol hill this morning while the senate is expected to vote on the right to contraception act, senate majority leader chuck schumer, he actually locked in the key test vote for the democratic contraceptive bill this afternoon. and the
5:09 am
bill would protect a person's ability to access contraceptives and protect a health care provider's ability to provide contraceptive. it is expected to fail in a closely divided senate, where most republicans oppose the legislation. this comes nearly two years after the supreme court overturned roe v wade. 508 on your wednesday morning. taking a live look outside, folks, already up and out the door. it looks like as we take a live look in dublin, maybe they're getting a early start in the day waiting for that coolest part of the day. it's nice to do. it's going to be hot today. it's going to be hot again. so if you do have any outdoor activities, running errands, doing things like that, try to get it done as early as possible. but we're also limiting our time outside, not only because of the heat, but also because of our air quality. we're going to see a moderate amount of air quality with the smoke that we've had recently, a couple of fires, and the high pressure is just pushing that back down into the valley. so we
5:10 am
are seeing our air quality slightly worse compared to yesterday. it's going to be very hazy as we head out and about around the bay area today. as our temperatures heat up. take a look at san ramon going from 71 degrees at 8:00 to our noontime temperature of 91 degrees. it's going to be too hot to have lunch outside, and it's also going to continue into the mid 90s throughout much of the afternoon. and there will be some spots that hit the triple digits, but this will be the last day of temperatures like this. we'll talk about the changes coming up in our microclimate forecast. mike's been trying to find us some lower places to fill up our gas tank. yeah, i'm looking for lower temperatures too, but you're not helping. all right, i hear the roadways. we have reached a new low in alameda county. livermore for 16 at dimond gas and mart on south front road, right along the freeway there. a stand out low in san francisco is 4.39 at best. gasoline mini mart on san jose avenue. the next best is 4.79 in that city, so quite a difference from their low and then a few cents lower in

sunnyvale from the day before. 455 at gulf on south wolf road. good stuff. all reported by you guys on gasbuddy.com onto the roadways. we are looking at a pretty smooth drive around the bay, but in san francisco we do have a closure for southbound 280 as you get down just from 101 to alemany, there is still an overnight road repair project going on there for the overcrossing, so that is closed. possibly until 6 a.m. you can go down 101 if you're heading down the peninsula, of course, and you can cross over at the bottom near sfo, a 380 connects those two freeways back to you. thank you mike. remote work reimagined. still ahead here on today in the bay. the changes many employers are now making. this is to help create a more collaborative workspace with employees. plus, if you like that light up floor that mike's always standing on, i got a disco version of that stick around. hey, it's a party on a wednesday. well, also a one of a kind in flight ceremony the way one airline staff and passengers helped celebrate this young graduate. you don't want to miss

that. and what's ahead coming up in a few minutes. and same freeway farther south. this is fremont with the nimitz. and we're looking at a nice flow of traffic. i'm also watching that flag flapping in the breeze. oh, we can use that later on. but kerry's got those big numbers. i've got speed limit and that's good. well good morning. very happy wednesday to you. investors have it in their heads that the fed might start cutting interest rates as soon as november instead of december. that has them in a buoyant mood this morning. interesting story coming out of tesla's relationship with nvidia. cnbc has seen internal memos at the car company showing elon musk diverted powerful nvidia chips ordered by tesla to his ex and a.i. companies to be used there instead, lora kolodny at cnbc reports. when musk asked nvidia to let his other companies jump the line ahead of tesla, musk delayed the automaker from getting more than a half billion dollars worth of computer chips.

trying to be extra safe, but the spaceship's already been nicknamed the calamity capsule. okay i have never actually seen saturday night fever. i was nine in when it came out, but i do know from the movie poster that the light up floor at the disco is very important and it's for sale. the actual floor used in the movie up for auction by julien's. someone bid $50,000, but the seller has a higher price in mind. they haven't reached the reserve. and marcus, you see there, it's just really just two by fours. and right, in light of light bulbs. right. you know, a trip to home depot and tap plastics and we could put that together. yeah. no kidding. yeah. project for the summer. right wouldn't that be fun. you started out you got to hit the white suit. come on. yeah i know right. well some bee gees in the morning. yeah, we'll do that later. all right. it's 517 for you right now. and new this morning putting a new spin on remote work. so i want you to get ready here. this new term it is called cross metro work.
5:18 am
you're like what is that? okay. so that's when an employee works remotely and not in the same metro area as their boss or even the home company business strategy expert. and on the mark founder mark lascola actually works in greater phoenix area. he's led hundreds of global redesigns, training thousands of executives worldwide. and he says cross metro workers need to understand just how their work impacts their coworkers. and every employee should regularly touch bases with their manager. it's just a matter of effort and sitting down and talking about expectations with your line leader, finding out what they need. and of course, this is something for you to consider. what people, the work that people do, is not, maybe specialized, but it's interdependent on other work. yeah. mark also mentions that it is important that cross metro workers do not disappear. he stresses state president through building relationships with fellow employees. i feel like what happened to that person who
5:19 am
worked here? oh no, wait, they still work here? yeah, exactly. we have a few of those. right. hello know we all put in our part. all right. no, i mean, okay. yeah, i know what you mean. now all right. 518 training for you this morning, a little boy, he is going viral. this is after having missed his kindergarten graduation. okay, but passengers aboard his flight made sure the accomplishment was still well recognized. take a look at this. we're giving him his graduation ceremony on this flight. day isn't that adorable little boy named xavier traveling with his family? when? from orlando to puerto rico on board a frontier airlines flight last month. and the flight attendants certainly gave him the honor he deserved, they made sure the passengers on board cheered. they high fived him as he walked down the aisle to celebrate his special moment. is that adorable? that's cute. it's nice. big time. yeah, i'll all

to himself, but it seems like, you know, they couldn't wait for summer vacation to get out of town. they were just like, we're even going to skip the graduation. we're getting out of here. what time is your class? it was like, do you have a few more? we'll wait. all right. well, they're getting maybe to a cooler spot, but we're going to have some hot temperatures across the bay area. take a look at this. clear, beautiful view and the start to our wednesday morning. as you're heading out. and here this is where we're getting that natural air conditioning where temperatures were in the upper 50s to start. and then as we go through the day we're only in the 70s. and there may be parts of the city that hits 80 degrees. but compare that to the 92 we'll have in san jose. and the 100 degrees will hit today in morgan hill. and we're also going to see a few more of those highs, up to 100 degrees in parts of the east bay with antioch and concord up to 199 in walnut creek, and 87 for the inner bay from oakland down to fremont.
5:21 am
we're in the upper 80s for redwood city. daly city, 72 degrees. you can see how much those temperatures change as you drive around the bay area. even in the city. it's in the upper 60s for the outer sunset and 80 degrees downtown in the north bay. we're in the low 70s near the coast from bodega bay. but as you move over towards santa rosa, 100 degrees even hotter in napa today. so we are looking at hot temperatures today, looking at the view for tomorrow. so it's still pretty warm for the valleys, but at least we're not seeing upper 90s and highs over 100 degrees. we are going to see it cooling down for san francisco with upper 60s. and that breeze makes it just over to the east bay, and then we don't really feel it in the valley. so it's still going to be warm tomorrow afternoon. but we all catch some relief as we head toward the end of the week. this is friday. we're going to see temperatures in the mid 80s for the warmest spots inland, and areas like livermore and the
5:22 am
tri valley going from 100 today to seeing some 80s for the weekend, even lower 80s for saturday and sunday. so we're looking ahead to a nice little cool down and not another big spike in temperatures like what we're seeing right now. our 7-day forecast shows that we are going to have these hot temperatures, but then eventually a cool down going into the weekend as well as early next week. and san francisco once again reaching into the low 80s today. but we'll bring it back to the 60s from friday into the weekend. mike, you're looking at some lights. yes, some bay bridge lights and we just have before the sun gets too bright, you can still see. look at that. on top of the salesforce building they say happy pride month on their instagram account. so they've got rainbows kind of swirling around. maybe you can catch it overnight as you travel over into san francisco right now, an easy drive. those lights are moving well and the metering lights are not on, so that's great for the morning drive. so far we do have these the lit up sensors now a little bit of slowing for west 37 but not

highway four. that's moving nicely through contra costa county. there is a minor crash up in the north bay with some debris. so we're watching that as you come down through santa rosa for 101. meanwhile, the rest of the bay shows a smooth drive on the freeways. back to you. let's keep it smooth. thank you. mike 522 right now, next year on today in the bay nbc bay area responds it's possible for your air conditioner to deliver nice, cool air without making you boiling. mad about your high electric bill. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura i'll show you how

hungry for energy. in fact, pg&e estimates they account for about 40% of our summer electric bills . but if you give your ac a little tlc, it might run a lot more efficiently. the energy department says you can hire a pro to check out the coils and perhaps clean them, but there are some other steps you can take yourself. for starters, check the filter and consider replacing it. the energy department says replacing a dirty, clogged filter with a clean one can lower your air conditioner energy consumption by 5 to 15. check your outdoor unit two. debris can disrupt air flow and cost you money. the energy department also recommends at least two feet of breathing room, so trim back plants and shrubs at least 24in inside your home. check your ductwork and use tape to seal any loose connections. the state

contractor board says sealing and insulating ducts can improve the efficiency of a home's heating and cooling system by as much as 20. sealing ducts will require time, elbow grease, and possibly squeezing yourself into your home's crawl space. yes, that's me. the work might pay off in a big way. consider a big home with a big ac. well, sealing everything up and lowering the build 20% equates to roughly $50 a month every month. those savings are pretty cool. those are a good savings. thanks kris 526 right now. coming up next, a top stories that we're following for you today, including a full house for the oakland ballers on forgettable home opener the way the bay area's newest baseball team is making history. i'm bob redell live outside the designated cooling center for livermore as temperatures are expected to hit 100 degrees here

bay. because of the national weather service's heat advisory that is in effect through tomorrow night. for much of the inland areas of the bay area, with temps expected to range anywhere from the 90s up to 100. this is video from walnut creek, which hit 101 yesterday. what does this advisory mean? well, it's a reminder to us to not leave our kids or pets in our vehicles. you want to limit your time outside when you're doing stuff out in the afternoon, and you want to make sure you use your sunscreen and drink lots of water. definitely stay hydrated and stay in the shade. i mean, get out of the sun. it's kind of dangerous, actually, you know? i mean, people get heat strokes and stuff out in this heat, you know, i got to stay hydrated. it's really hot. it's upper 90s past couple of days. it was it was fairly cool. but today was the first day where was actually really warm. and you see me wearing my nice little shirt, you know, it's hot. so i'm just enjoying the weather. most, if
5:33 am
not all communities in the bay area will be opening up at least one cooling center. there are too many to list on our screen, but the california office of emergency services oes does have a list on its website that we have posted not only on your screen, but on our website at nbcbayarea.com reporting live here in livermore, bob redell today in the bay. all right. thanks so much, bob. so now let's check in with meteorologist kari hall. she's tracking just how hot it's going to get. yes. it's going to be very much like yesterday. and in a few spots in the inland valleys, even a degree or two hotter. so this will be the hottest day we've seen so far this year. as we are now under that heat advisory. for those areas that bob talked about, away from the coastline, away from the bay, those valleys from sonoma and napa valley, over toward the delta, into the tri valley, as well as santa clara valley. and we're going to see those temperatures cranking up and headed for the low 90s. we hit 90 in san jose yesterday. today it will be 92, and morgan
5:34 am
hill will reach a high of 100 degrees. we're also looking at those triple digit temperatures from concord up toward fairfield and vacaville, as well as napa into santa rosa. now, tomorrow we are going to see those temperatures coming down just slightly, and that's going to be the trend going into the weekend. so i'll be tracking that and we'll talk more about that weekend forecast coming up a little bit later. all right. thanks, carrie. and with those rising temperatures and fire dangers, a great resource is going to our nbc bay area app. it is free available for you anytime on any smartphone. there you'll be able to find up to the minute weather updates in your area and the latest news headlines. the 2024 race making its way to the bay area, vice president kamala harris traveling here later today. she arrives just after 1130 this morning for an event in oakland. she'll also go to san francisco for a fundraiser hosted by manny's on facebook. owner manny uchitel says the fundraiser itself won't be at the cafe. they're actually booking a larger venue to host her after
5:35 am
that, she heads back to washington, d.c. tomorrow. former president donald trump will arrive in the bay area attending a fundraiser in san francisco. it will be hosted by investor david sacks and chamath palihapitiya, the cohost of the popular all in podcast. tickets start at $50,000. the fundraiser will come exactly a week since the president's felony conviction, which his campaign has used as a rallying cry for donations. well, today, mourners will attend the memorial service for the son of half moon bay mayor joaquin jimenez. joaquin dominic jimenez alvarado died may 22nd on highway one. this is when his motorcycle crashed with a truck. he was 28 years old. the service will be held in half moon bay at 2:00 this afternoon. well, now to a live look in san francisco. this is where district attorney brooke jenkins is set to announce a new crime prevention initiative. that event will be held at the
5:36 am
southeast community center on evans avenue. she will also speak about the new office unit. it will start at six tonight. small business owners making a plea to state lawmakers to preserve a critical program. here's a live look in sacramento, where later today, small business groups will gather to try to convince lawmakers to reconsider the proposed 50% cut to california's small business assistance services. the program has been critical in keeping small businesses afloat ever since the pandemic. advocates say the cuts could doom some businesses now trying to stay afloat. the owner of a san francisco cafe and catering company agrees their support is key to help small businesses grow and to continue supporting the state's economy. these cuts will definitely impact, minority owned and women owned and all kind of small business, because, you know, we'll limit the access to a lot
5:37 am
of the training, the, the consulting and, even, finances. the program provides technical assistance, including bilingual classes through san francisco's renaissance entrepreneurship center. advocates say the proposed cuts could impact up to 75,000 small businesses statewide. a new baseball era begins in oakland, 4000 fans last night packing west oakland's raymond park to see the oakland ballers first home game. they played in the independent pioneer league, and while it may be a far cry from the major leagues, the team is still being welcomed with a lot of fanfare there as the a's get set to move on, even the mayor showed up. i don't know what's happening at the coliseum, but i can tell you that the energy here, it's electrifying. you know, the energy here is just something that you can't even describe. you have to come out and actually feel it for yourself. the fact that we are able to continue baseball in oakland beyond this year is just
5:38 am
it's fantastic. i mean, how can you not embrace this? you know, it was really cool for those fans. well, the team members actually greeted the fans on their way in, handing out rally towels and it included kelsey whitmore. she's actually the pitcher for the ballers. she threw out the ceremonial pitch, which oakland rapper mister fab took a swing at. as for the game, let's just say it's a long season. the ballers, they lost the game to yolo 9 to 3. well, now to a live look at pacifica state beach. in addition to today's high temperatures, the national weather service issuing a beach hazards statement specifically for the north facing beaches. if you plan to head to the beach, be sure to be on alert for those conditions which are expected to be choppy. meteorologist kerry hall, of course, been monitoring that. you know, a lot of people are probably looking to escape to that area, but still some more caution to think about. yeah, you already saw one person out there at the beach enjoying the sunrise and we are going to have
5:39 am
those dangerous conditions where some of the waves come up a lot higher than the previous wave. so it kind of sneaks up on you. hence the name sneaker waves, but also rip currents. and those are those currents that can draw you farther out into the ocean, even if you're just at a small depth in the ocean. so you do want to make sure that you're very careful. some of those breakers may reach 8 to 15ft today and know the flags that if you go out to the beach, there is a high hazard. if it's red, medium hazard if it's yellow, a low hazard if it's green, and also just dangerous marine life for that purple flag. if you are just a just out there to enjoy the warmer temperatures. and we're also looking at temperatures that are headed for the mid 70s for stinson beach, we don't get a lot of days like that upper 70s for santa cruz, and we're in the mid 60s for a high today in monterey, but it will be much cooler over the next few days. and mike, you're seeing some changes that are right on time. yeah. the ones i'm looking at right here on this map, 101 northbound through
5:40 am
san jose, right on schedule, but it looks like a little more as far as where the slowing occurs up to oakland road now. so we'll follow that. make sure there's nothing unusual there. there is a crash and some sudden slowing over the last few minutes. crash reportedly in the two middle lanes of southbound 280 near that vista point turn out there. and though there was a deer in the roadway. and so that's what's being addressed right now . traffic is still moving, but there is a slowdown. so a crew may have arrived to assist. i don't know if that vehicle was able to get to the shoulder. we'll keep following that over here on the other side of the bay where we're going to the second night in a row for the a's to be playing alongside 880. so of course, on and off there before and after the game. and then another game there. also the oakland ball as we talked about that their second of a homestand. they have six seven game homestand i think there. so that will be going on through sunday with activity there at raymond park. the note that you can actually take the bart train to west oakland. and there's a special shuttle that will take you that less than a mile over there to the raymond park itself. so keep that in mind.
