hall has been monitoring that throughout the week, and today. well, the thing about it is we are in that microclimate. weather alert. another extreme heat day. parts of the east bay under a heat advisory. want to give you a look around the bay area, where those temperatures are again expected to reach triple digits. that means firefighters are on high alert. and when calls come in, it means suiting up in full fire gear. contra costa firefighters you see right here, they can add another 20 plus degrees to the 100 degree weather when they're underneath all of that equipment and triple digit days. well there's hydration situations and stations for heat alert days or our red flag days. it's basically meant to as a backup for rehab for any firefighters who have been overcome by any heat. now, firefighters say that it is crucial to hydrate ahead of time just so you can be effective. while trying to put out those fires. all right. we're all going to feel it today. let's check in with

meteorologist kerry hall. so when are we going to see this extreme heat move in. yeah it's already starting to ramp up for a lot of spots. and the heat advisory continues for today these areas, including parts of the santa cruz mountains down to silicon valley and then over toward the tri valley, through the delta, as well as much of the north bay, solano county has step up with an excessive heat warning until this afternoon into the evening. and right now we're starting out with some cool temperatures near the coast. san francisco at 52, but it's already 60. in oakland, and we're at 65 in dublin, san jose at 65 degrees. so let's talk about how this may impact your body. some of the things to watch out for, for either heat exhaustion or heat stroke. you have signs like dizziness and thirst with heat exhaustion and heavy sweating, a rapid heart rate and weakness. but then when it comes to heat stroke, which is a lot more severe, you have confusion. no sweating, red hot, dry skin and a rapid, strong pulse and then eventually a loss

of consciousness. you definitely need to get to an emergency room or get that person to an emergency room. if you have any or all of those symptoms, and then looking at our highs today with the color contours you're seeing here, the risk of moderate to major heat to your body as we're looking at temperatures reaching into the mid 90s for the inland areas and up to 102 today in vacaville. now your ac unit is going to be working hard today. you want to make sure you stick around at 625. our consumer team is breaking down how to cut down on your energy bills. as these temperatures continue to rise, we'll talk more about the cool down. we have our natural air conditioning coming back. but mike, you promised a peek at dublin. yeah, because it's what you're talking about. look at that orange sky. it just feels warm. hot today over here in the area. but also, we've been noticing that what it looks like for our regular viewers, you

might have noticed what looks like a heavier volume of traffic starting early. when it was dark there, it was a little bit of an optical illusion. we're focused a little farther down the roadway, so it appears like the cars are closer together. but there is the volume building. now, i just wanted to show you that live look, it's right about where that arrow is around tassajara. and it's green sensors there. so still at the limit. a great drive right now just to build for highway 84. pretty typical. of course the metering lights are on and contra costa county shows just a typical pattern. back to you. thank you very much mike 603 right now breaking news overseas. amanda knox has failed and clearing her name when it comes to her conviction on slander charges. this follows her false accusation that her then boss murdered meredith kercher. kercher was knox's british roommate, killed in 2007. an italian court reconvicted knox on slander charges following a retrial overnight, knox spent four years in prison before she and her former boyfriend were cleared of the murder. he is also facing a separate retrial over his slander conviction. a judge

sentenced knox to three years in prison. the new overnight a man is under arrest after investigators say he opened fire at the u.s. embassy in lebanon. it happened around 1030 last night. pacific lebanese forces say they shot the man who was taken to a hospital. they're only describing him as a person holding syrian nationality. a u.s. official says all of its staff is safe and accounted for. however, a security guard was injured in the shooting. no word on a potential motive, but this is a moment when there is widespread anger across the middle east towards the united states because of its support for his for israel in the war against hamas. well, the bay area this week sits right at the heart of decision 2024. and the upcoming presidential election, both presumptive presidential tickets are represented. it starts with a visit today from vice president kamala harris. donald trump arrives tomorrow and protests are also in the works today in the bay's ginger conejero saab. she's live in san francisco this morning and

ginger, these rallies really are about tapping into the wallets of a lot of bay area donors. that's right. marcus and laura, good morning to you. california cash is up for grabs both today and tomorrow. even if both visits will be quick stops. vice president kamala harris is set to arrive in the bay area at oakland just past 1130 this morning. she's expected at two political events. there's one before 1 p.m. and the other after two this afternoon. the vice president is expected to be met with protests calling for a permanent ceasefire, specifically a protest in oakland at the intersection of manchester and ocean view. another one in san francisco on valencia and 19th street, scheduled for 12 noon now. she leaves san francisco at 330 this afternoon. manny uchitel, the owner of manny's cafe in the mission, is co-hosting the event, hosting the vice president. tickets range from $500 to $25,000, and it's not the first time the vice president has paid a visit to

manny's cafe. here she is. in a video posted on the cafe's instagram account talking with the owner, former president donald trump is expected to arrive in the bay area tomorrow for his fundraising event. will also be in the city, hosted by investors david sachs and chamath palihapitiya, they are the co-hosts of the popular podcast all in now. we're told tickets for that event start at $50,000. a 30 foot chicken is expected to make an appearance throughout san francisco in opposition to trump's arrival. here's our political analyst larry gerston, with more on where the race between the former president and the current president now stands. the fights for the independence and the fights for the swing state votes. and after that, you look at each side where they have strength and where where the other doesn't. it's tough. it's tough to say which candidate would win. right now it's pretty even. although we must give trump credit for being ahead in

after the supreme court overturned roe v wade. live look outside in dublin for you this morning. look at that sunrise. beautiful start to the day. meteorologist kari hall has a look at those temperatures. for some people not so beautiful, but yet it could be nice for some. yes, hence our microclimates. we are going to have temperatures ranging about 20 to 30 degrees across the bay area. but we're all dealing with decreased air quality. our air quality outlook today on these hot days when the wind is not moving around as much, and we've had a couple of fires that gets trapped here and we see that impacting with the air that we're breathing in. there's going to be unhealthy air for people who have breathing problems or any heart conditions. you want to limit your time outside the worst of that. and that measure of the particulate matter is in the east bay as well as santa clara valley. here's a look at pleasant hill as you're heading to work. one of the things that we can do to improve our air

quality is catching public transit or carpooling, biking to work. we're going to see in pleasant hill as you're heading there to the bart station. it's going to be in the upper 60s. but look at the trend throughout the day. already at noon, we're at 91 degrees, headed for the mid 90s at 1:00, eventually seeing those hot temperatures continue. tomorrow we are looking at a significant cool down with highs in the upper 80s low 90s compared to the triple digit heat we'll see in some of the inland valleys for today. we'll talk about that cool down coming up. mike has been looking for lower gas prices around the bay area. karina, you talked about all those great transit options. we want to reduce emissions. carpooling is also a really good option for you. but we're talking about car gas prices right now. they reached a new low in alameda county. livermore here the top number for 16 at dimond gas and mart on south front road right along the freeway there stand out low in san francisco for 39 at best. gasoline mini mart on san jose avenue. the best is for 79 in the city outside of that one. outstanding for 39. i just told

cnbc reports. when musk asked nvidia to let his other companies jump the line ahead of tesla, musk delayed the automaker from getting more than a half billion dollars worth of computer chips for months now, neither nvidia nor tesla would comment. united airlines says it's going to hire more than 1300 new employees at its sfo operations. they're hiring all over. they'll hire more than 2000 employees in chicago, its main hub. the business times, has counted up the numbers says since 2022, united has hired more than 30,000 additional people. united has been and continues to be, one of san mateo county's biggest employers. nasa and boeing are going to try again to launch that starliner capsule with two astronauts up to the space station suni williams, butch wilmore at the controls. third try. they've had all kinds of trouble, but nasa officials say, well, that's just part of going to space. i know it's a little disappointing. we were all

people talking about this new at six for you, a live look at sfo this morning as we're teams are ahead of schedule on a runway repair project. in january, the airport closed one taxiway with a planned july 1st reopening date and now reopening no later than june 21st. the closure has actually led to more reschedule delays, and roughly one third of those flights impacted between 30 and 60 minutes. turning for you this morning, a popular and picturesque summer destination to escape the bay area's heat. oh, i love this place. lake tahoe these days, getting all sorts of love on social media. a study by lake .com indicates lake tahoe is the most commonly posted u.s. lake on instagram, with more than 3 million posts, it's earned the website's title as the most picturesque lake in north america. great lakes, michigan's superior, ontario, and erie round out the top five. i just want to take a dip this time of year when it's warm and

you could be out at the lake on the lake, and then there's still a little bit of snow up on the top of the mountain. that is just amazing for those pictures. yeah. then you get in the water and you go like, oh yeah, it comes from the snow. i usually don't get into lake tahoe until august. okay that's when it warms up. and there's such a range in the temperatures of the lake water there from the winter to the summer. well, it just takes me that long to get summer ready. yeah that part too. all right. we're doing that this morning. if you are getting out there and you have some activities to do, try to get it in while these temperatures are still in the 60s now, it does heat up quickly. and that's what we've been talking about for today. check out santa rosa, our trend going hour by hour where we're in the mid 70s at 9:00, it's ten degrees warmer two hours later, and then at 1:00 it's 91 degrees and will be in the 90 throughout much of the afternoon. and then it drops down as we approach. sunset at 7:00 will be at 81 degrees as we

zoom in to the south bay. here's a look at our high temperatures for this afternoon, ranging from 90 in milpitas to 97 in los gatos and 92 in san jose, up to 100 degrees in morgan hill. check out the east bay. we're going to see upper 70s from oakland to hayward as well as fremont, but then pleasanton is 97 degrees and antioch and concord is hitting those triple digits again. today we're up to 91 in palo alto, while in half moon bay 71 degrees, and in san francisco, we're in the upper 60s for the outer sunset downtown. 80 degrees really just depends on where you are. we've been talking about this heat. if you're in the north bay and you're hanging out at bodega bay, it's a comfortable 71 degrees, while santa rosa will hit a high of 100 degrees and 101. in napa today, livermore, one of those hot spots that are dealing with a hot weather today. we're going to see it cool down significantly, but it's still warm. 89 tomorrow, 87

on friday, and the weekend is looking nice with some low 80s. but then we see the numbers coming back up a few degrees for early next week. we're going to enjoy this weekend while we get a break from the intense heat. and we're also looking at a mostly sunny sky all throughout the forecast. today, you just need to stay hydrated, get in the air conditioning as much as possible, and it's even warm in san francisco. that's kind of unbearable for people without air conditioning, but the natural ac returns tomorrow with some upper 60s into the weekend. and mike, you said there's a problem in san francisco. yeah. watching for the potential for big delays across the bay bridge. but the last few minutes has showed some promise westbound up the span here after the toll plaza, the inclines great. all the way through treasure island. look at the speed sensors in towards san francisco. i've circled the crash reported at the fifth street off ramp from the bay bridge. so westbound 80 for a few minutes there was a lot of slowing. then it kind of eased up and actually started to clear in the last couple of minutes.

so that may be good news. they may have cleared that crash very quickly. we're watching that very closely. the metering lights don't appear to have been slowed down, but i'll watch the toll plaza as well. looking at a build toward the richmond toll plaza. so that is pretty much on time as the build is through richmond and some folks do now build toward the north bay across 580, a smooth flow across the san mateo bridge. a little bit of slowing around the toll plaza shows up here. this corner, as you come down out of hayward. no surprises here for a build on tri-valley 84 coming out of pleasanton and livermore or in through niles canyon, we're looking at a little build for the northbound direction of 101, just a slight build in volume 87 will follow suit very quickly and then we do have some slowing now for vasco. we're at exactly a half hour out of contra costa county. back to you. thank you. mike well, next here on today in the bay. nbc bay area response. it's possible for your air conditioner to deliver nice cool air without making you boiling mad about your high electric bill. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. i'll show you how next

your home down without unnecessarily driving your electric bill up. yeah. consumer investigator chris chmura shows us, how much a little diy might save us. air conditioners are notoriously hungry for energy. in fact, pg&e estimates they

account for about 40% of our summer electric bills. but if you give your ac a little tlc, it might run a lot more efficiently. the energy department says you can hire a pro to check out the coils and perhaps clean them, but there are some other steps you can take yourself. for starters, check the filter and consider replacing it. the energy department says replacing a dirty, clogged filter with a clean one can lower your air conditioner energy consumption by 5 to 15. check your outdoor unit two. debris can disrupt air flow and cost you money. the energy department also recommends at least two feet of breathing room, so trim back plants and shrubs at least 24in inside your home. check your ductwork and use tape to seal any loose connections. the state contractor board says sealing and insulating ducts can improve the efficiency of a home's heating and cooling system by as much as 20. sealing ducts will require time, elbow grease, and possibly squeezing yourself into your home's crawl space. yes,

to you. i'm marcus washington and i'm laura garcia. we're going to get to the heat. what everybody is talking about in just a moment. but first, we are following this breaking news that i mentioned out of stanford university's campus this morning. pro-palestinian students say they have barricaded themselves inside the office of the school's president. we're working to confirm the news, but the group posted this video on instagram showing protests outside the building, the stanford daily reports. at least ten protesters are inside the president's office and another 50 outside. the paper also says the sheriff's office is responding. we've reached out to stanford this morning as well. today in the bay's ginger conejero saab is also heading to the campus right now. we'll have more information as this story is developing. meantime that top story right here at 630, already warming up here across the bay area. so let's check in with

meteorologist kari hall because she has a look at what we can expect because some areas hotter than others. yeah absolutely. we are going to see our microclimates and some areas are along the coastline are still going to be comfortable today. while the valleys are going to be heating up. and the heat advisory continues for these areas shaded in orange. we're going to see this continue through tomorrow, where our temperatures are headed for the 90s and even triple digits. solano county will be included in an excessive heat warning, which is basically a step up from a heat advisory. look out for these signs for today, for you and the people around you. heat exhaustion. some of those signs and symptoms are dizziness, thirst, heavy sweating, a rapid heart rate and weakness. and then if you don't get to shade or get some medical care, it could lead to heat stroke where you have confusion. you stop sweating. you have red hot, dry skin, rapid, strong pulse, and loss of consciousness. all of these possibilities with a lot of people who work outside or in warehouses and people without air conditioning. our temperatures today are headed

for the low 90s for san jose, 100 degrees in morgan hill, as hot as 102 degrees in vacaville, and that creates a major heat risk. while we'll see temperatures in the 90s in the tri valley and much of the north bay, that's a moderate heat risk. and that's how these temperatures will affect your body. now, today in the bay, bob redell is in the east bay this morning. one area that is set to sizzle. bob, how's it feeling right now? you're still wearing your jacket i am it's very mild right now. this is a beautiful wednesday morning here in livermore. but as you were mentioning, kerry, it is expected to hit 100 degrees. perhaps 101 today, which is why we're outside the livermore public library. you are mentioning people who might not have air conditioning. many communities will be opening cooling centers. and here in livermore that cooling center will be at this public library behind me where you can come in not just to read a book, but to get some free air conditioning. this is after the national weather service has issued this heat advisory, in effect through

tomorrow night for much of the inland areas of the bay area, with temps expected to range anywhere from the 90s up to 100. this is video from walnut creek, which hit 101 yesterday. so what is this advisory mean? well, piggybacking piggybacking off what kerry said, this is a reminder for us to not leave kids or pets and vehicles. you want to limit your outdoor activities in the afternoon and make sure you use that sunscreen and drink lots of water. definitely stay hydrated and stay in the shade. i mean, get out of the sun. it's kind of dangerous actually, you know? i mean, people get heat strokes and stuff out in this heat, you know, i got to stay hydrated. it's really hot. it's upper 90s past couple of days. it was it was fairly cool. but today was the first day where was actually really warm. and you see me wearing my nice little shirt, you know, it's hot. so i'm just enjoying the weather. most, if not all communities will be opening up at least one cooling center, there's too many to list

includes events in oakland and in san francisco. there also expected to be some protests amid the war in gaza as well. how big of a shadow do you actually think that this is casting over potential democratic voters ahead of november's election? good morning laura. look, nobody likes to see a protest when you're about to give a talk. there's no question about that. but this issue, while it's been very important to students and important to some groups in locales, it has not resonated with the american public at large. we look at the polls, we find it's near the bottom in terms of areas of concern. so while these folks are doing what they need to do, it doesn't look at the moment as if it's going to be a big issue. now, what happens when it gets to the convention? well, that could be another story. but this piece progress that's going on, hopefully going on may also make that an issue that goes away. we'll have to see. yeah, that's an interesting point. i guess we're just so well aware of it here in the bay area with the protests that we've seen. okay

so on to president trump. i mentioned that he's coming to the bay area tomorrow, just a week after his conviction on charges tied to falsifying business records. he's expected to attend a fundraiser in san francisco. let's talk about the need of campaign funding right now where he is sitting, he's sitting in the right place because california leads the nation. and if you look at 20, 20, $300 million from california went to biden. that was 21% of his total $100 million went to went to trump about 10% of his total. so he's in the right place and as a matter of fact he's caught up. he was about $75 million behind before the conviction of his trial. and since then, of course, he claims he's raised a whole bunch of money up to about 75 million. we won't know the answer to that until the fec federal election commission gets the data later on in this month, but at least for now, it looks to me like he's pretty close to even. and now, of course, he wants to search. but one thing, laura, one thing people don't remember

the see the oakland ballers first home opener. they actually play in the independent pioneer league. and while it may be a far cry from major leagues, the team really is still being welcomed by a lot of those fans with the fanfare as the a's are set to move on. even the mayor showed up last night. i don't know what's happening at the coliseum, but i can tell you that the energy here, it's electrifying. you know, the energy here is just something that you can't even describe. you have to come out and actually feel it for yourself. the fact that we are able to continue baseball in oakland beyond this year is just it's fantastic. i mean, how can you not embrace this? and not only did they get to see that first game, but also team members greeted those fans on their way in handing out those rally towels that includes kelsey whitmore. she's actually the pitcher for the ballers. she threw out the ceremonial first pitch, which oakland rapper mister fab took a swing at. as for the game itself, well, let's just say it's going to be a long season. the ballers did lose the game to yolo 9 to 3 and to a

live look this morning. look at this beautiful start to the day. this is pacifica state beach. in addition to today's high temperatures, the national weather service is issuing a beach hazard statement. specifically for north facing beaches. now, if you do plan to head to the beach, be sure to be on alert for any of those conditions as they're expected to be choppy out there in those waters. meteorologist kari hall, of course, been monitoring all that for us. carrie. so just another thing that folks need to be mindful of today. yes, especially as you're out along the coastline and you want to make sure that you're looking at the flags as they kind of give you an indication of some of the conditions that will be out there. we're looking at the possibility of 8 to 15 foot sneaker waves, and some of those breakers that may come up quite high, higher than some of the previous waves. so if you see two double red flags that the water is closed to the public, there's a high hazard. if there is one, a flag there, medium hazard. if you see yellow flags, green means a low hazard. and then there could be some dangerous marine life to look

out for. that will be a purple flag, just a heads up as you're heading out there. we don't get many of these days where it's completely clear and sunny throughout the day, and warm temperatures in santa cruz, it will be in the mid 70s and stinson beach will be in the low 70s today, monterey in the mid 60s, and it will be cooler over the next few days, so we won't have the all clear skies and the mild temperatures. like what we're seeing today. things will change as we get closer to the weekend. also, the bay area cools off, so we'll talk about that. but right now, right now, mike, you've been trying to find a potential problem near the bay bridge. yeah. and we got the assistance of course, from our operation center. thank you, adrian and jerry, for zooming in over to this part. just off the berkeley curve. here's westbound 80 around the corner and over toward the bay bridge, where the backup is standard at the toll plaza. transitioning look at that. all these labels. that's why they call this the maze. the labels transferring onto southbound 880. they were reports of a disabled big rig, a double trailer being pulled by a ups rig. there was some slowing there, approaching powell and then also at the berkeley curve that cleared up, and i didn't

say that they don't like president biden's plan to cut border crossings, though scott mcgrew joins us now. the plan almost identical to one created by donald trump, essentially identical. that's right. very similar at best to a republican written border bill as well. that one never passed when republicans turned against it. in fact, biden's plan is actually a bit tougher. the

executive order signed yesterday, if it holds up in court, would prohibit new legal asylum claims if the number of illegal crossings rises above 2500 a day, which is most days. here's the president. i'm moving past republican obstruction and using the executive authorities available to me as president to do what i can on my own to address the border. frankly i would have preferred to address this issue through a bipartisan legislation, because that's the only way to actually get the kind of system we have now that's broken, fixed, to hire more border patrol agents, more asylum officers, more judges. but republicans left me no choice. now, the plan is not popular with more liberal democrats, who quite rightly point out it's almost identical to a plan donald trump tried to put in place when he was president. it's not popular with republicans, even though it is fundamentally a republican idea. i talked to president trump this morning and he says this is a

scam and people will see through it. i think he's dead, right. if you want the border secured and you and you're waiting on this group to do it, you're going to die waiting. president biden is in trouble politically, he's polling right up there with fungal infections. part of the reason for that is that he gave in to the loon wing of his party, and he dissolved the southern border. now, five months before an election, he has to appear to be willing to do something about it. the president's in europe for five days. here he is arriving in paris now. the anniversary of the allied landings during the second world war is tomorrow. that is why he's in france. other news, vice president kamala harris is in the bay area

on a campaign tour. our ginger conejero saab has been covering that for us, have live reports ahead in our streaming newscast and of course, coming up on our midday news as well. laura marcus. all right. thanks, scott. well, small business owners are making a plea to state lawmakers to preserve a critical program. here's a live look in sacramento this morning. this is where later today, small business groups will gather to convince lawmakers to reconsider the proposed 50% cut to california's small business assistance services. that program has been critical in keeping small businesses afloat ever since the pandemic. the owner of one san francisco cafe and catering company fears that those cuts may doom some businesses trying to stay afloat . these cuts will definitely impact, minority owned and women owned and all kind of small business. so what the program does is it provides technical assistance, including bilingual classes through san francisco's renaissance entrepreneurship center. advocates say that the proposed cuts could impact up to

75,000 small businesses statewide. and, well, 2040 this morning, four diplomas, one celebration, a gilroy family getting ready to watch their quadruplets graduate from high school. nbc bay area. we followed this family for 18 years after the birth of those santa clara quadruplets. since that time, they moved a little further south. cole, jonathan, alex and emma. born back in 2006, their parents were thrilled, understandably, but a little overwhelmed. mom i'm angela, campbell says. it wasn't easy raising four kids at the same time. now all four will graduate tomorrow from christopher high school in gilroy. the siblings say they've enjoyed navigating the ups and downs of life together. we're not entitled to one thing because, like, again, we have to share everything. so i think, i think having that that's a good trait to have, and i've definitely got that from growing up with all of us. if i wasn't liking one of my siblings that

everything back down to the earth, and it really doesn't get a chance to mix out the smoke and the pollutants. and also the car emissions that we're seeing out there. good thing that we're able to, at least for the morning hours, have some comfortable temperatures for biking to work, walking to work, or getting to the transit station. we're going to see it though, heating up very quickly today as our temperatures head for the low 90s in cupertino, morgan hill, you're hitting triple digits today, and for the east bay, we're also going to see a high of 100. and antioch and concord 99, very close in walnut creek. while oakland will see a high of 87 degrees. now notice a half moon bay is sunny and 71 degrees. that's where we have the most comfortable weather. but wow, just such a wide range and temperatures across the bay area, it's going to be 91 in palo alto, while san francisco's anywhere from upper 60s in the outer sunset to 80 degrees downtown and the north bay will range from low 70s in bodega bay to 100in santa rosa

and 101 in napa this afternoon. tomorrow it's looking much better, but it's still warm in the valleys. we're up to 92 in livermore and fairfield. in martinez, 86 degrees and upper 70s for oakland. a lot of these temperatures dropping ten degrees tomorrow and a few more degrees on friday. and that leads us into a much more comfortable weekend in gilroy. we're going from mid-nineties today to upper 70s tomorrow. look at that relief coming just in time for the weekend. we're going to enjoy some more time outside and even extending into next week. it's fairly mild, just get slightly warmer. but this weekend for some of our warmer spots inland, it will be in the mid 80s and then low 90s for early next week, but we're coming off those really hot temperatures and san francisco gets back the natural air conditioning after today, going from 80 to upper 60s for tomorrow afternoon. mike you've been watching the commute. seems like we haven't had any major incidents. we haven't. but that heat is clearly evident when you see all that sunshine just
