good morning, i'm jessica layton. we begin this friday morning with president biden overseas. and on the agenda in france, a meeting with volodymyr zelenskyy. the talks with the ukrainian president coming as president biden has been celebrating american veterans and allies, as he commemorates 80 years since d-day. alice barr joins us live from washington. what can we expect from these talks today? >> reporter: jessica, it's possible that this meeting between the two world leaders could be a bit more tense than the pastimes times that they've down together and had a warm relationship. president zelenskyy in recent interviews has sounded frustrated and angry over the scale of western military aid, saying delays have cost lives and undermine progress against russia. president biden has been criticized for not attending a peace summit later this month that was organized by ukraine. vice president kamala harris is expected to be there, but zelenskyy says president biden's

absence will be applauded by putin, the leader of russia. this meeting comes after president biden spent thursday meeting with and celebrating d-day veterans. in his remarks, the president referenced ukraine and said democracy is more at risk across the world today than at any point since world war ii. >> now we have to ask ourselves, will we stand against tyranny? against evil? against crushing brutality of the iron fist? or we stand for freedom, and we defend democracy. we stand together. my answer is yes, and only can be yes. >> reporter: after meeting with zelenskyy, president biden will travel to normandy, a spot where american army rangers scaled steve steep cliffs to secure their positions against the germans. the president will speak about the significance of that moment and the importance of standing

up to dictators. meanwhile, the president's son will be back in court this morning in delaware. behind's federal gun trial is getting close to deliberations. prosecutors expect to call their last two witnesses today. this comes after a dramatic day of testimony on thursday. nbc's brie jackson is following the case. >> reporter: hallie biden, widow of hunter biden's brother beau providing emotional testimony. she was romantically involved with him when he purchased the firearm at the center of this case. while on the witness stand, she said she found the gun in hunter's car, panicked, and then threw the gun in a trash can at this delaware grocery store. she says hunter was angry when he found out. prosecutors using her testimony and text messages to paint hunter biden as an active drug user at the time he purchased that gun on october 12th, 2018. pointing to a text exchange two

days later on october 14th, where hunter wrote, i was sleeping on a car, smoking crack. hallie getting personal about her own drug use, saying, it was a terrible experience that i went through, and i'm embarrassed. and i'm ashamed of that period of my life. a sensitive moment putting a spotlight on struggles with substance abuse. >> i think that it will play a role in this, and it could be to hunter biden's benefit. >> reporter: during cross examination, hallie biden acknowledged that she did not see hunter using drugs during the time frame when he bought the gun. supporting the defense's point that he did not knowing lie when checking no on a federal background check form. >> the defense is when hunter filled out that form, saying he wasn't a drug addict or user, that that was true at that time. >> reporter: hunter biden has pleaded not guilty to the

charges, saying, they are politically motivated. in washington, brie jackson, nbc news. a former advisor to donald trump has been ordered to report to prison. steve bannon was found guilty on two counts of contempt of congress two year s ago when he refused to comply with subpoenas from the january 6 committee. now he's being ordered to begin his four-month sentence on july 1st after a higher court rejected his appeal. bannan's lawyers argue his sentence should be on hold until they appeal all the way to the supreme court. they do have a chance to appeal this new ruling. well, the date is set. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu will address a joint session of congress on july 24th. that's according to two sources familiar with this plan. several democrats have indicated they will boy caught the speech, as israel is being condemned around the world for the civilian toll in the lawar in

gaza. dozens were killed in an attack on a school in the central strip. we want to warn you, a lot of the pictures coming out of gaza are extremely upsetting. claudio, good morning. how is israel defending the latest strike? >> reporter: good morning, jessica. israel says that that was a precise strike that was targeting tens of islamic jihad and hamas militants, some of whom they say participated in the october 7 attacks, and that in that attack, who were using the school to plan other attacks. and in the attack, israel says they managed to kill nine of those militants. and they said also that they postponed the attack twice in order to avoid civilian casualties, but at least according to the al aqsa hospital in gaza, alongside those militants, up to 31 civilians, including women and children, also died in that strike. now, as you mentioned, the school was run by the united nations agency for palestinian

refugees, and at least according to witnesses who spoke to "the associated press," the missiles struck two classrooms in that school. there were refugees there who were sheltering after having fled their homes in gaza. hamas says it was enabled by the failure of the international community to use its leverage to protect civilians in gaza. on the same day, a joint statement was issued by 17 countries from around the world, including the united states, asking or calling hamas to accept the latest deal proposed by president biden for a permanent cease-fire, as well as of course the release of remaining hostages from gaza. but so far, israeli leaders have distanced themselves from that deal, and hamas has not yet formally accepted or rejected that deal. >> and emotions running high on all sides. claudio, thank you. the suspected gilgo beach serial killer has been charged

with two more murders, bringing the number up to six. rex heuermann appeared in court for a new arraignment. investigators recently found a laptop with what they call blueprints for the murders. >> reporter: just weeks after investigators revisited the home of the gilgo beach murder suspect, rex heuermann is facing new murder charges, now accused of killing a total of six women over the past several decades. prosecutors pointing to what they believe is the 60-year-old architect's planning document. why is it critical to the investigation? >> this planning document crystallizes and encapsulates his intent for the commission of these murders. namely, he intended to murder these victims every step of the way. >> reporter: unearthed in march, the document goes into excruciating detail, with apparent tasks to complete before, during and after killing.

after suffering a health scare thursday. the nfl network reports that backup defensive lineman, bj thompson, had a seizure and went into cardiac arrest during a special teams meeting. medical staff called an ambulance, and thompson was brought to the hospital where he is said to be in stable condition right now. the chiefs canceled team activities for the rest of the day following the incident. well, from michigan to maryland, residents are reeling this morning after a swath of deadly storms wreaked havoc wednesday. the system spawning 22 tornados across five different states. at least one person was killed and more than a dozen others injured in several states. an ef- to2 tornado was confirmen ohio. meanwhile, the stifling heat is blanketing much of the west, taking temperatures into the triple digits. phoenix reaching a new lorrecor high of 113 degrees. las vegas hitting 111. nbc meteorologist angie lassman

joins us with whether any relief may be on the way for those folks. angie, good morning. >> a little bit of relief, but we've got to wait a little while. and we have other spots that we're going to watch for potential record highs. 20 million people included in the heat alerts. we've had them up for days in some of these spots. we're going to continue that with temperatures once again expected to surge into the triple digits. maybe not as many record-breaking highs, but places like phoenix will still be at 112. back to the 90s in places like albuquerque and grand junction. and as we get into specifically the weekend across the gulf coast and florida, we're going to see the potential for temperatures to be well into the 90s there. on top of that, the humidity will make it feel like triple digits. we could see record-breaking conditions for folks there as we get into next week. today, we have showers spinning
