donald trump after his hush money trial conviction. nbc news has learned that the former president is scheduled to have an interview with a new york city probation officer today. nbc's alice barr joins us now. what's the purpose of this meeting? >> this is a required step in the sentencing process. and three sources tell nbc news that a probation officer will be interviewing mr. trump virtually while he is at his mar-a-lago estate in florida. the officer will evaluate things like the former president's mental state and financial background. this is a chance for mr. trump to make the case for a lighter punishment. the officer will provide a report to the judge, who is set to deliver the sentence on july 11th. the former president just held his first rally since his conviction, speaking to a crowd in 100-degree heat in las vegas, saying his campaign is stronger than ever after the verdict. >> what they've done is they've weaponized the department of

justice. the only thing they didn't understand is that we just had the largest fundraising effort in a period of one week than anyone has ever had. hundreds of thousands of people. hundreds of thousands of people contributed, that they wouldn't have except for the court case. and our poll numbers are higher now than they were before. >> and in delaware, closing arguments are expected to begin as soon as today in the historic trial of president biden's son. hunter biden has pleaded not guilty to illegally buying a handgun by lying about his drug use on a government background form. we are waiting to see if huntler take the stand today. his legal team took the weekend to decide. if he does testify, it will be the last testimony heard before the jury before the defense rests. and a guilty verdict in this case could mean anything from probation to up to 25 years in prison for the president's son.

frances? >> that could be very impactful. alice, thank you. now to the legal battle over reproductive rights. the supreme court is set to rule on two pivotal abortion cases this month two years after the court overturned roe v. wade. in the most closely watched case, the court is deciding whether to impose new restrictions on a commonly used abortion medication, including whether to allow access to the pills by mail. and in the other cases, justices are considering a near abortion ban in idaho and whether it conflicts with the federal law that requires emergency medical care for patients. the rulings are expected by the end of the month. the next ruling day is thursday. a political shake-up this morning in israel after eight months of war, opposition leader benny gantz has left the emergency unity government. it was formed right after the october 7th hamas attack on israel. gantz followed through in a promise he made weeks ago to exit the war cabinet if prime minister netanyahu did not

present a credible post war plan for gaza. this comes amid mounting international outrage after the ministry says israel killed nearly 300 palestinians in a chaotic operation to rescue four israeli hostages. at the scene of a refugee camp, this man said his five children were injured in the attack which also destroyed their home. >> we have nothing to do with hamas. i was taking breakfast with my family here. why you send the helicopter to bomb us? >> let's go now to claudio lavanga. claudio, good morning. bring us up to date in the latest. >> good morning, frances. well, that rescue operation was carried out in an area that was densely populated with palestinian refugees. and at least according to the health ministry in gaza, at least 275 people were killed, including 64 children and 700 others were injured. now we have not independently confirmed that yet, and we don't

know how many civilians could be among the dead and injured there. at least according to hamas, three other israeli hostages were killed during that operation of which one with a u.s. citizenship. of course, we don't have confirmation of that either. now there was another rumor circulating in the aftermath of that operation, and that was that the israeli special forces used a pier that was built by the u.s. off the coast of gaza to deliver aid as a base for that operation. but so far both the united states and israel have denied it. now the news of the hostages rescued was received with jubilation all across israel, but that does not stop. benny gantz, the main rival of benjamin netanyahu from quitting the war cabinet. as you said, the accounts demanded netanyahu to come up with a post war plan by june 8th. when he failed to deliver that

on saturday, he said that netanyahu is on the way to israel's victory and called for election this fall. but netanyahu responded on x, this is not the time to abandon the campaign. this is time to join forces. frances? >> claudio, thank you. at least ten people were hurt in madison, wisconsin after a shooting at a hoof top party early sunday morning. nine of the victims were hit by gunfire. another person was injured by broken glass. some of the victims were high school students. madison's police chief says it is a miracle no one is dead. police are still searching for suspects and a potential motive. wyoming issuing an emergency declaration after a mountain road collapsed. a massive chunk plunged 70 feet down the mountain. crews say a crack started forming tuesday and then expanded rapidly before collapsing over the weekend.

the road is vital for tourism in the area and is now closed indefinitely. now to newly released body cam video of a huge house explosion in suburban virginia. first responders running for their lives and desperately trying to get neighbors to safety. here is nbc's jesse kirsch. >> reporter: this was the moment an arlington, virginia home exploded. first responders fleeing. >> i'm here! i'm here! >> reporter: and evacuating residents. >> police department! i need you to evacuate and move down the street, okay? >> reporter: watch again from another angle. authorities say this armored police vehicle was about to smash in a covered window, but the blast came first. these videos, newly released by authorities show a december incident that investigators started with a homeowner firing more than 40 flares into the neighborhood, sparking a standoff between police and the suspect, who did not surrender. >> arlington county police! stop shooting the flares! mr. yu!
