money trial conviction. nbc news has learned that the former president is scheduled to have an interview with a new york city probation officer today. nbc's alice barr joins us now. alice, what is the purpose of the meeting? >> frances, this is a required step in the sentencing process. three sources tell nbc news that a probation officer will interview mr. trump virtually while he is at his mar-a-lago estate in florida. the officer will evaluate things like its former president's mental state and financial background. this is a chance for mr. trump to make the case for a lighter punishment. the officer will provide a report to the judge, who is set to deliver the sentence on july 11th. the former president just held his first rally since his conviction, speaking to a crowd in 100 degree heat in las vegas, saying his campaign is stronger than ever after the verdict. >> what they've done is they've weaponized the department of justice. the only thing they didn't

understand is that we just had the largest fundraising effort in a period of one week than anybody has ever had. hundreds of thousands of people, hundreds of thousands of people contributed. that they wouldn't have except for the court case. and our poll numbers are higher now than they were before. >> and in delaware closing arguments are expected to begin as soon as today in the historic trial of president biden's son, hunter biden, he has pleaded not guilty to illegally buying a handgun and lying about his drug use on a government form. we are waiting to see if hunter will take the stand today. his legal team took the weekend to decide. if he does testify it would be the last testimony heard by the jury before the defense rests. a guilty verdict could mean anything from probation all the way up to 25 years in prison for the president's son. frances. >> alice, thank you. a political shake up this

morning in israel after eight months of war opposition leader benny gantz has left the emergency unity government. it was formed right after the october 7th hamas attack on israel. gantz followed through on a promise he made weeks ago to exit the war cabinet if prime minister netanyahu did not present a credible post-war plan for gaza. this all comes amid mounting international outrage after gaza's health ministry says israel killed nearly 300 palestinians in a chaotic operation to he is could you four israeli hostages. at the scene at a refugee camp this man said his five children were injured in the attack which also destroyed their home. >> we have nothing to do with hamas. i was with my son in here. why you send the helicopter to bomb? >> let's go to claudio lavanga. claudio, good morning. what's the latest? >> reporter: good morning, frances. well, that rescue operation was carried out in an area densely

populated with palestinian refugees and at least according to the health ministry in gaza at least 275 people were killed during the operation, including 64 children and 700 others were injured. now, we don't know how many civilians were among them but at least according to hamas among the dead were also three other israeli hostages of which one with u.s. citizenship. we don't have yet independent confirmation of that claim. now the news of the hostages release was welcome with jubilation across israel, but that did not stop, as you mentioned, benny gantz, the main rival of benjamin netanyahu, from leaving the war cabinet now back in may. he did demand the israeli prime minister -- or asking for a concrete post-war plan, and he gave him a deadline, june 8th, which was saturday. when that didn't materialize,

well, he resigned and he said that now benjamin netanyahu is on the way -- is in the way to a credible israeli victory and he called for a -- demanded elections for this. netanyahu responded on his x account saying that this is not the time to abandon the campaign but to join forces, frances. >> claudio lavanga for us. thank you. now to the legal battle over reproductive rights. the supreme court is set to rule on two pivotal abortion cases this month two years after the court overturned roe v. wade. in the most closely watched case the court is deciding whether to impose new restrictions on a commonly used abortion medication, including whether to allow access to the pills by mail. and in the other case the justices are considering a near total abortion ban in idaho and whether it conflicts with a federal law that requires emergency medical care for patients. the rulings are expected by the end of the month. the next ruling day is thursday.

at least ten people were hurt in madison, wisconsin, after a shooting at a rooftop party early sunday morning. police say nine of the victims were hit by gunfire. another person was injured by broken glass. they say none of the injuries appear life-threatening. some of the victims were high school students. madison's police chief says it's a miracle no one is dead and police are still searching for suspects and a potential motive. now to sacramento where the suspect in mass shootings -- in a mass shooting has been found dead. smiley martin was being held on charges from a 2022 shooting that killed six people where police say two groups of men connected to gangs fired more than 100 shots in a downtown area near the state capital. the sheriff's office is now investigating after a 29-year-old inmate was found unresponsive during a cell check around 2:00 a.m. saturday. martin's public defender told nbc news he was informed of his client's death saying martin had been fighting to defend his innocence. a state of emergency in

wyoming near some of the country's most popular tourist spots after a landslide wiped out a key road. that could mean a big set back for workers and headaches for the tourists visiting favorites like yellowstone and the grand tee tans. dana griffin has the details. >> reporter: an emergency declaration after a mountain road near the popular jackson, wyoming, tourist destination catastrophic flee failed. >> starting tuesday it started moving faster. >> reporter: drone video showing the massive chunk of the teton pass that plunged down the mountain. the 8 inch crack started forming thursday, by friday an additional 10 to 12 inches rapidly formed. >> overnight it slid all the way down, complete failure. >> reporter: this road connects jackson to roads in east idaho. 10,000 vehicles pass each day, including families that go to work and school.
