president donald trump meets with a probation officer in a matter of hours following his conviction on fraud charges. we will take you live to washington to break down the next steps in this federal case. plus, only on nbc bay area. a south bay woman takes action after her mail gets stolen. but did it work? this is today in the bay good monday morning. i'm ginger conejero saab, and i'm kris sanchez. marcus and laura are off. we're going to get to all of those stories in just a moment, but first we want to start with mike inouye because he is tracking some breaking news at the bay bridge toll plaza. not good news, mike. no, not good news. you flashing lights? you can tell this is from our emeryville camera. looking across the bay or across the water at the toll plaza. i wanted to give you context. traffic is flowing by smoothly. actually at a pretty good clip. this is that separate section. so it's kind of separated from the main toll plaza. but here's our view. you can see those cones and the

flares blocking folks from lanes seven and eight. that's basically in the middle of the roadway there because of a car or a vehicle has gone. instead of going through the lanes, it's gone into the toll plaza itself. major injuries reported, and we don't know how long it's going to take to clear this, but they have those flares out indicating quite some time here. as the chp came out and did some investigation, everybody backed up. there was a quick traffic break. it's just cleared up once again as you're heading west, though, across the toll plaza, those middle lanes are blocked. you still have about 15 lanes to use, but there's quite a distraction. we'll track that. that's the only incident really. that's a factor right now going on. so back to you. all right. thank you so much mike. also in the east bay, crews are on the scene of a brush fire in pittsburg. the blaze appears to have started in the warehouse for the pittsburg theater company off john henry johnson parkway. it started just before 5:00 yesterday afternoon, burning at least 55 acres. it really spread quickly and got dangerously close to homes as well. el cal fire and contra costa county firefighters do have it under control, but

neighbors are on high alert. the helicopters were like on top of the house, we seen like this red smoke that they put down to stop it. starting today and over the next few weeks, cal fire crews will start boosting their staffing to peak levels across the state. bob redell will have much more on the fire season preparations ahead in our next half hour. and meteorologist kari hall is here with us and kerry, another warm week is ahead. yeah, we do have that concern about more fires developing. when you're looking at that video, you could see it kind of blowing across the hill. and we are right now at 58 degrees. the wind is calm. so that's the good thing. and we also have some higher humidity. but we are also gearing up for another hot midweek. and so for this to for tomorrow into wednesday, we will have a heat advisory in effect for all of these areas shaded in orange. that is where those temperatures will go back to the 90s and even a few triple digits. this does not include the coastline or the

now and happening today, there's a rally planned outside the san francisco federal building where a three judge panel will hear an appeal in a lawsuit accusing the biden administration of being complicit in a genocide by providing israel with weapons for war in gaza. the original lawsuit went to court back in january, and at that time, a judge decided that this was not a question, that the courts had the authority to decide. now, as those judges convened for the appeal, demonstrators are planning to rally in front of the san francisco federal building during that hearing. it is set to start at 10:00 this morning. president donald trump is scheduled to meet virtually with a probation officer this related to the guilty verdicts in the hush money trial against him today in the bay's alice barr joins us live from washington with more on what's expected. alice, good morning. good morning ginger. this is a required step in the sentencing process, three sources tell nbc

news that former president trump will be interviewed virtually by a probation officer from his estate at mar a lago. it is required by the court as part of the former president's pre-sentencing report, that officer will evaluate mr. trump's level of remorse, his financial background, his mental state and then provide a report to the judge to help him determine the appropriate, appropriate sentencing on july 11th. legal experts say the former president could be asked if he associates with anyone with a criminal record, and he may also want to interview other people and mr. trump's home afterward. this comes as the former president just held his first rally since his criminal conviction. he spoke to a crowd of more than 20,000 people, enduring a 100 degree temperatures in the las vegas sun. mr. trump particularly slammed the biden family and president biden's executive order. related to curtailing asylum seekers at the u.s. southern border for three and a half years, the people of nevada

have had a front row seat to joe biden's evil and criminal obliteration of our southern border. it was criminal. what he's done. did you see the other day he came out with little plan. let's make it a little bit tougher because he's getting killed in the poll. we're leading here by, like 12 points. you know that. all we have to do is stop the steal, and we have it made. and following his hush money trial conviction, former president trump faces anywhere from probation to four years in prison in washington. i'm alice bar ginger. back to you. thank you. alice. our wild story out of the south bay. so you've heard of thieves stealing mail. but now some of those thieves are targeting post office boxes inside post offices. it's a story you'll only see right here on nbc. bay area laila gibson told us that she got a p.o. box so that her mail wouldn't get stolen. but then when she made

her weekly visit to her box at a willow glen branch, all her mail was gone. a usps postal investigator told us that gibson's p.o. box is just one of the break ins reported at that postal office. investigators say they are still working to find out how many po boxes were broken into. they say this is not a really regular thing, but it is happening more often here in the bay area i see the post office as an added layer of security. okay, it's i'm thinking it's protected as government property. so that's why i got at a post office box. and to have this happen, i mean, it was really shocking how stealing mail is a federal offense, which could lead to up to five years in prison and up to a quarter million dollar fine . 508 this monday morning, some wild video along the embarcadero in san francisco from the weekend that is coming to light. a large sideshow ended with that

car on fire. look at those flames there. now. this was in front of pier one overnight on sunday near the ferry building. but this was only part one. the crowd then moved to valencia and cesar chavez in the mission district. that part of the sideshow lasted about 30 minutes before police broke it up. and across the bay in oakland, this sideshow that started at the intersection of grand avenue and lake park, also overnight on sunday, it continued at several locations around the city, and you can see drivers doing stunts and others setting off fireworks. at one point, video appears to show a driver hit someone in the middle of a circle. police later broke up the crowd. no word yet on any possible injuries or arrests. it appeared that guy was stumbling around. i wonder if that who was hit? our disturbing new numbers show thousands of north bay residents have died prematurely

because of wildfire smoke, according to a study published friday in science advances. 2300 sonoma county residents died early from fine particulate matter specifically caused by those wildfires between 2008 and 2018. those numbers do not include several major incidents that happened after 2018, including the kincade fire, the lnu lightning complex fires, and the study recorded nearly 700 premature deaths in napa county. fine particulates are linked to a number of serious health problems, and the study found particulates from wildfire smoke are ten times more harmful to humans than other kinds. so obviously we want to know about our air quality today. we've had some fires, nothing like the lnu, right? yeah, we've had several fires, though, and then when you get those temperatures heating up, you get high pressure that just pushes everything back down to the surface. and so we don't have the ability to really mix out that smoke. and just like we saw

the fire yesterday in pittsburgh , it's still affecting the air quality there locally. and you don't realize just how much that smoke gets into your bloodstream and can impact not only your lungs, but your heart health as well. you do want to limit your time outside as we are going throughout the afternoon, we're seeing it in the moderate range. it's unhealthy for people who do already have some breathing problems, like asthma and then for the coast and the east bay, we're going to see it still moderate for the afternoon. as you're heading out the door, one way to cut down on that air pollution is to catch public transit. as you're heading out in to start out with some low clouds and fog, temperatures in the low to mid 50s. and then throughout the day it's going to be clearing out our temperatures for this afternoon. just slightly warmer compared to yesterday. the big warm up starts tomorrow, so we'll talk more about that in a few minutes. mike's been checking around to find us some lower gas prices. yeah. good news. we have the second best price in the state and that's our first best rate here on the list. it's livermore's foxy gasoline on old first street. i know, i talked

a ten for one stock split that took effect after the market closed on friday. also on friday , we got the may jobs numbers showing far more jobs added to the american economy than experts thought. they always lowball it. they always get it wrong. 232,000 jobs added another sign the economy continues to be strong despite the fed's effort to slow it down through higher interest rates. they'll have another interest rate meeting this week. nobody expects any changes, especially not with those strong jobs numbers. apple begins its yearly worldwide developers conference today in cupertino. it's expected to show off changes to siri to make it better. apple is way behind other companies on ai. in fact, it's teaming up with chatgpt maker openai to catch up a number of artists are pulling their art off instagram to prevent its parent company, meta, from using their art to train their ai, you could draw all kinds of pictures, even realistic photographs with ai.

some artists say they don't want any part of it. this artist, kelly mcnerney, says meta is training everything we've ever publicly shared in order to make human creativity obsolete and replace us with synthetic, cheap content. meta did update its privacy policy recently to warn users as of june 26th, the company may use their posts to train its ai. it's a double whammy for artists who see their art used to train what may be they fear, their eventual replacement. and finally, christian ginger push in japan to allow women to keep their names. after they marry. one of japan's biggest business lobbies is asking the japanese parliament to change the law to allow women to use the name they've used all their lives in business after marriage. in japan, a couple can choose between the wife's name or the husband's. but i get you going to guess about 97% of couples go with the husband's name, and that leaves a woman who's worked

cream ingredients headed to court very soon. this is all something that started two years ago when one customer went to cold stone creamery, ordered pistachio ice cream. she later learned that the flavor did not actually have pistachios in it, just pistachio flavoring. so now she's suing cold stone for deceiving customers. a federal judge in new york has given the go ahead for that case to be decided in a courtroom, and lawyers of the cold, stone, cold stone store is declining to comment on that suit. they're not even saying, that's nuts. i know that's a good one, chris dad joke trending this morning. a family's stop for lunch at a golden corral restaurant in little rock, arkansas, ended with quite the surprise. well, this after 26 year old tavia woodfork gave birth to her son in the restaurant's restroom. now, tavia had been mentioning that she was having some stomach pain, but unbeknownst to her,

she was actually 37 weeks pregnant. and in active labor. she was experiencing what is known as a cryptic pregnancy, a rare situation in which someone doesn't know they're pregnant. for most or all of the term. now, thankfully, all was okay, and tavia gave birth to her son. the name of her son, tamar kylan coral woodfork. you had to add in? yeah, i used to watch that show. i didn't know i was pregnant and you'd always give the side eye. like what? yeah. really? really. and they're they're like, we can't see you till your party's complete. we didn't know you needed a baby highchair. wow. i mean, good thing it all worked out okay, but, geez, louise, imagine, i know i can't. what a surprise. yeah. anyways. but i wonder if people with the weather that we're expecting are also going to. going back to your nuts comment about the ice cream, which i love. i mean, when it's hot too. yeah, when it's hot,

pistachios are not. you just want something to help keep you cool. so we're going to be dealing with some hot temperatures over the next couple of days. we've already had this once. we're going to see it again as we go into the next couple of days. but this is what's been our saving grace some days. and it's with us again today. you can see the low clouds and fog over san francisco. what has been irritating a lot of us is the high amount of pollen that we have floating through the air. right now, it's grass pollen. so if you've been sneezing, you're most likely allergic to grass, but also the olive and the weed pollen still floating through the air. mold is still pretty low. as you check out the forecast at the bottom of the screen for your microclimate. you'll see that tomorrow and wednesday will be quite a bit warmer than today, and we're still getting our break this morning with temperatures in the low 50s in san francisco, a light wind, and we're in the upper 50s for san jose. but then looking at today's high temperature, we're up to 85. in

san jose, 83 in moraga, and then parts of the north bay already hitting the upper 90s. but it's not until tomorrow when we really start to feel that heat spreading across the inland south bay, east bay, as well as the north bay, there will be highs in the mid to upper 90s for napa and santa rosa, 90 in san jose and 95 for morgan hill. and then on wednesday the heat is easing up a bit. and so we really have this one day with temperatures spiking and then coming back down. and then the rest of the forecast is looking pretty good. unfortunately, if you do have outdoor plans tomorrow, once again that's going to be the hot day as high pressure continues to build. and if you do have plans to the sierra just a heads up that we may start to see some thunderstorm chances develop there by the end of the week. and looking at our 7-day forecast for the inland areas, we'll be in the upper 80s today some mid 90s and then coming down through the end of the week, san francisco will see also a rise in temperatures tomorrow, but the rest of the week is looking nice and mild.

mike you've been tracking that breaking news. yeah the major injury crash. this is from the street level. our photographer josh has given me great information, though. he's told me that instead of just laying seven and eight, they've closed a lane on either side as a buffer. and so now lanes six through nine are closed at the bay bridge toll plaza, even though only two closed signs show up. let's show you the view from our other camera. we have overhead now. they've turned that camera instead of showing the backup. they have shown this over here again. lane seven and eight where the crash happened. right here we see the caltrans crews arriving. there was a traffic break. all traffic was stopped back things up. and now we have this truck here. look at that. they're going to put up that bumper here. and at least one of those lanes will remain closed. perhaps two i think both lanes seven and eight will remain closed once they do close those two lanes though, they can hopefully clear those crews back to you. thanks a lot, mike. well, next on today in the bay. nbc bay area response. the numbers on her hotel bill are more than $500 off. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. we

on high alert in the east bay. firefighters are monitoring hot spots after flames break out as wildfire season ramps up. the changes state fire leaders are making starting today, weeks. ahead of schedule. at this point, 12% of risk is underway. today, we'll have the very latest of what to expect in the coming. and a kite surfer gets creative after getting stranded on a beach in santa cruz county. the way he was able to get the attention of rescue crews this is today in the bay thanks so much for joining us on this monday morning. i'm kris sanchez and i'm ginger conejero saab. laura and marcus are both off today. but first let's get right to mike inouye who's tracking breaking news on the bay bridge. mike. yeah, we have this activity in the middle of the bay bridge toll plaza closing two lanes, actually temporarily closing four lanes. you see all the caltrans crews, one lane on either side of buffer. so lanes six through nine, from what i

understand, are all closed right now. we have the consolidated to the middle of the roadway. i've seen them load up some junk right onto the back of this truck here. and two bumper trucks was lined up with signs and flashing lights. so they intend to keep these two lanes closed for a bit longer. but we should have a couple more lanes hopefully opening once they're able to clear some of those crews. again. this has got the backup at the toll plaza, but lighter traffic flow only a little slowing on the berkeley curve because of the building commute there. and highway 37. we'll track this major injury crash, though at the toll plaza. back to you. all right. thank you. mike. well, today, one city in the north bay is declaring the start of wildfire season. and it comes after it was devastated by wildfires back in 2017. we have live team coverage this morning. meteorologist kari hall is tracking warm temperatures again this week. but first let's go to bob redell today in the bay's bob redell, who joins us live from the east bay. and bob, many there are on alert following a weekend fire. correct. it took place behind me behind these lock gates here at

stoneman park. we're in the city of pittsburgh. con fire actually just went in there a couple of engines went in there to do fire watch on this brush fire. that is out, but they just want to make sure nothing were to flare back up. this was a 55 acre wildfire that started just before 5:00 last night. you should be able to see this in the video. it appears to have started in a warehouse for the pittsburgh theater company, located inside this park off john henry johnson parkway. a firefighters with con fire and cal fire. they had it under control within a couple of hours. no structures damage, as far as we know, but with the gusty winds yesterday, people who live in a nearby neighborhood were getting pretty nervous. the helicopters were like on top of the house, we seen like this red smoke that they put down to stop it. definitely a scare. it's been a busy week for us. it's a good reminder that fire season is upon us and people need to be, be ready. and last wednesday, the crystal fire and saint

helena scorched 60 acres. and the weekend before, firefighters were battling the corral fire near tracey, which burned 14,000 acres of dry, grassy hills along 580. starting today and over the next couple of weeks, cal fire crews up and down the state, they'll be boosting their staffing to peak levels. they'll be adding extra fire engines, helicopters was air tankers, bulldozers, hand crews and this is weeks of ahead of schedule. keep in mind, we've had a lot of rain this year and now we're getting the heat. so there's a lot more fuel than maybe you would have in other years, and today the city of santa rosa is declaring today to be the official start of the wildfire season. up there, you'll recall santa rosa suffered some major destruction and death back in 2017 during the tubbs fire, reporting live here in pittsburgh. bob redell today in the bay definitely a huge concern for us in the bay area. thank you. bob, kerry, bob mentioned that, you know,

there's increased fuels. it seems like things are getting very, very dry. yeah. and when they say it's the start of wildfire season, this is not just something that they pull out of the air. they're going out there. they're taking samples of the brush, the trees, as well as some of the grasses, and seeing what is the moisture content in these items. and could it ignite very quickly. and when it drops below a certain level, then they say, okay, now wildfire season has officially started. and the thing that we're seeing that's the most dry right now is the grasses. and they're also very high. the brush has an elevated fire threat as well as trees and some of the larger trees. and overall across the region, it is a very average. but we are once again seeing the grasses and the brush drying out almost to the maximum level. and so when we do get this dry, you want to make sure that you're very careful creating that defensible space, not throwing out cigarets and don't drive on dry grass. secure tow trains as well as use grills on paved surfaces. so we'll talk about the heat that's coming our

got some good news. well, new this morning. police are investigating a shooting at a san francisco bart station. it happened around 730 last night in the plaza at the 16th and mission street bart stations. it's not yet clear what led up to the shooting, or if anyone was seriously hurt. we have calls out or we have made calls out to the police for more information. service was not disrupted. a new numbers show the real struggle for those trying to make it in the bay. the unhoused population is increasing slightly, but more people are now in shelters. that is according to new data. from a point in time report from january, san mateo saw 18% increase in the unhoused population, followed by san francisco county, which saw a 7% increase. both marin and alameda county saw more people living on the streets, rather fewer people living on the streets, fewer by 3. contra costa county was down by 8, and napa county's

population of unhoused people was down by 16. now, keep in mind this data is based on just one day at the beginning of the year. now, overall, the unhoused population did increase by about 1% all across the bay area. there are now more shelters available in certain counties like san mateo, but in other cities, the unsheltered population is still rising. in oakland, the unsheltered homeless population rose by 10. happening today. nurses will picket outside alameda hospital, trying to pressure hospital and county leaders to reverse a decision to cut patient care as early as july 1st, alameda and east bay residents could lose access to elective surgical services at the hospital. services would be acute, would be would include rather ophthalmology, gynecology and pain management. alameda county's board of supervisors are set to meet on june 18th to continue discussing the next

steps for the hospital. now we have reached out to the hospital for comment. taking a live look at san jose. it is looking a little cloudy, but carrie, we know that sometimes when we have wildfires like what bob was talking about, that smoke can kind of get trapped. so we're looking at some air quality. yeah. not today. it's not as bad as where it would cloud the sky, but we're starting out with that marine layer and those morning clouds that keep our temperatures down. so we are going to have some near normal highs for today. after our cloudy start, it will be clearing out and temperatures are headed up to 73. in san francisco, 86 in dublin and 85 in san jose. there's not much of a heat risk for the bay area tomorrow, but as temperatures ramp up, we are going to have some more of that heat developing for areas away from the coast and the bay. we'll be tracking that. we'll talk more about this high heat. but, mike, you've been tracking a crash with a lot of live videos of it. yeah. we have this photographer, our photographer josh is here showing this backup. the lanes above. you see the sign above

closed lanes. actually, six through nine are all closed. the crash happened in the median where the arrow is. let's show you an angle from above the roadway here from the toll plaza camera, normally showing us the backup, which is filled in from at least the 880 overcrossing and building here, these are lanes, the seven and eight. those two lanes are closed and they will remain closed. it sounds like, for the duration of whatever cleanup they have to do and whatever repair work has to happen here. but on either side of all these crews on scene for their safety, we have one lane on either side backed up as blocked as well. that's causing additional backup, but it's only there. the rest of the bay has a pretty mild commute back to you. that's good to hear. thank you. mike big decisions are expected from the supreme court this week ahead on today in the bay. the key cases set to be heard and the impact they'll have across the country. plus one athlete not headed to paris wnba star caitlin clark will not be hitting the court in the summer olympic games. we'll have to hear her response this morning. and a scene out of the jetsons

most, of course, today is that israel and hamas think the peace plan is good. whether they'll abide by it. but getting other countries to support it would put the pressure on hamas to accept it. israel, of course, wants its hostages home. that's a key issue. hamas wants to continue to rule gaza after the war. that's a key nonstarter for israel. secretary of state antony blinken once again in the mideast, this time in egypt, his eighth visit to the region since the attack on israel october 7th. he's headed to israel next. president biden back home this morning after his trip to france to mark the d-day anniversary. before leaving, he visited an american cemetery, the one trump rather famously skipped during one of his visits. the president again pushing for unity among nato allied countries. it's so important that we continue to have that alliance as we have to continue to beef up those alliances, continue to keep nato strong, continue to do what

her phd computer science education at uc berkeley to inspire young minds. after introducing ai to her young daughter, the world renowned computer scientist has founded ai club in sarasota to reach out to young minds around the world. later this month, ai club will host the 2024 ai research ai club research symposium. it's open to sixth through 10th graders with ai projects who want to share those with their peers. and she says it's a great way to relieve the fear of ai for parents and students. i think it's important to acknowledge that the fear is reasonable. artificial intelligence is going to impact every industry, every, you know, it's going to be around your lives, and it's probably more in your lives than you might even realize. education is the key. and unfortunately, ignoring it is, and hoping it will go away is simply not going to work. it's not going to go away. so

it first. so the heat advisory returns tomorrow, and it's from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. now when we have the high fire, we also have an elevated fire danger. and we'll see that for the inland hills as well as the valleys. but it's going to be trending cooler late in the week and as well for the weekend. so take a live look outside in walnut creek. it's a clear start here. we are going to see those temperatures heating up quickly as we go throughout the morning into the afternoon upper 50s. the start will be at 79 degrees at lunchtime and headed for the mid 80s. so it is a little bit warmer than yesterday, but not unbearable. but it will be up to 90 degrees in concord and livermore today, and 80 in fremont, 82 in mountain view and low 70s for san mateo and in san francisco, starting to heat up in the north bay as well. but tomorrow's the peak of the heat. take a look at these highs. and on the underlay you can see the color contours of the moderate. the orange that we're seeing here. that's a moderate risk of heat. that's how this kind of

weather impacts your health. and there will be a moderate risk, especially for people without air conditioning or who work outside you do want to make sure you're staying hydrated and paying attention to any signs of heat exhaustion. and we're then going to start to see those temperatures coming down on wednesday. it looks much nicer for the end of the week, but we'll be watching out for a chance of thunderstorms for the mountainous areas heading into the weekend where we're going to see a big drop in temperatures in morgan hill. we're going from mid 90s tomorrow to only 70 on wednesday and thursday. mike, you've been watching that crash of the bay bridge. what's going on? well, this shot still shows the big backup and it still shows the overhead sign showing lanes seven and eight are closed. but josh, our photographer who's there, confirmed for me. lane six has been opened. we can see another angle where we can actually make that out a little bit better. there we go. yes, actually this pickup here going through lane number six, lane seven and eight still have that crash activity and looks like they just opened the lane past that as well. so just seven and eight are closed right now. they've reopened two

more lanes at the toll plaza for this major injury crash. but a big backup and a big distraction. be careful out there. back to you. good advice to be careful out. happening now. we now know the identity of the man shot and killed over the weekend at lake berryessa off. officers say that 39 year old andres fabian sandoval garcia died saturday night. the napa county sheriff says a large fight broke out just after 530 at the oak shores day use area. garcia was shot during that fight. two other people, including the man who allegedly shot garcia, were stabbed and taken to the hospital. the sheriff says the suspect is in custody and will be booked into jail once he is released from the hospital. it's still unclear at this point what led up to that fight, freeing hostages ahead at 6:00, the all new potential deal in the works between the united states and hamas. the reason israel is not being included in the talks. keep it here. you're watching
