the car crashes into the bay bridge toll plaza. the car was removed a few hours ago, but the
6:01 am
impact is still lingering. our mike inouye is tracking your monday morning commute. a rush to contain the flames as they get dangerously close to homes in the east bay. the conditions crews are facing as we head into the start of wildfire season. plus, a story you'll only see on nbc bay area thieves not just going after mail carriers and mailboxes. now they're targeting your mail right inside of the post office. this is today in the bay. thanks for joining us on this monday morning. i'm kris sanchez and i'm ginger conejero saab. marcus and laura are off this morning. let's get right to that. breaking news. mike inouye has been tracking that news on the bay bridge all morning. mike yeah, crash happened about 4:00 in the morning. then during the 5:00 hour, they cleared the one of the vehicles. the only vehicle, as i'm, as i'm told, involved hitting that divider right there. see where all those crews are here between lanes seven and eight at the toll
6:02 am
plaza. crashed there, we're told. major injuries. and then just minutes ago, we got word. great news. instead of major injuries, minor injuries that a lot of soreness on the body. but a head injury and not a major one. and this should be also good news. we have two more lanes that are open. so only lanes seven and eight are blocked. you see the caltrans crews here i believe they're assessing damage to see whether or not they can reopen those lanes. i'm not sure. we haven't really gotten a clue that. but there is that backup on the approach at the toll plaza itself. but look at that. the berkeley curve, even moving smoothly, things are relatively light as far as the traffic flow goes compared to that bay bridge toll plaza. the rest of the bay very easy. thanks a lot, mike. well, in the east bay, crews are on scene of a brush fire in pittsburg. here's a live look this morning. the blaze appears to have started in a warehouse for the pittsburg theater company off of john henry johnson parkway. the fire sparked shortly before 5:00 sunday, burning at least 55 acres. there. you can see all that. smoke it quickly spread
6:03 am
and came dangerously close to homes within a couple of hours, cal fire and contra costa county firefighters did have it under control. beginning today, cal fire crews up and down the state are boosting their staffing to peak levels. our bob redell will have much more on their plan of action ahead in our next half hour. but first meteorologist kari hall is here. and kerry, we do have another hot week ahead, right? we do. we are going to see a couple of hot days in the middle of the week, but right now we are catching a break. hopefully they do continue to keep that contained and we're in the upper 50s. the wind is calm and the humidity is high, so that tends to slow the spread of any fires out there. and throughout the day we are going to see temperatures heating up, going from low 60s at 7:00 this morning to headed for the upper 80s and even a few low 90s later today. and then tomorrow the heat advisory begins as the high heat continues, it ramps back up for the inland areas. now notice that it does not include the bay and the coast. we are going to
6:04 am
see temperatures there in the 70s and 80s, and we are looking at today some slightly warmer temperatures. but the major heat risk really increases tomorrow, so i'll have more on that as well as the air quality coming up in a few minutes. all right. thank you carrie. turning now to decision 2020 for former president donald trump is scheduled to meet virtually with a probation officer this morning. this is related to the guilty verdicts in that hush money trial against him today in the bay's alice barr joins us now from washington dc with more on what we expect. this is a virtual meeting. what else do we know? this is a required step. kris in the sentencing process, as you noted, three sources tell nbc news that former president trump will meet virtually with his probation officer and that mr. trump will be speaking from his estate in mar-a-lago. this is required by the court as part of the former president's pre-sentencing report, that officer will evaluate mr. trump's level of remorse, his financial background, his mental
6:05 am
state, and then provide a report to the judge to help him determine the appropriate sentencing. on july 11th, legal experts say the former president could be asked if he associates with anyone with a criminal record, and he may also want to interview other people in mr. trump's home afterwards. the judge may this comes or rather the officer may. this comes as the former president just held his first rally since his criminal conviction. he spoke to a crowd of more than 20,000 people, enduring a 100 degree temperatures in the las vegas sun. mr. trump particularly slammed the biden family and president biden's recent executive order related to curtailing asylum seekers at the u.s. southern border for three and a half years, the people of nevada have had a front row seat to joe biden's evil and criminal obliteration of our southern border. it was criminal. what he's done. did you see the other day he came out with little plan. let's make it a little bit
6:06 am
tougher because he's getting killed in the poll. we're leading here by like 12 points. you know that. all we have to do is stop the steal, and we have it made. and following his conviction in that criminal hush money trial, former president trump faces anywhere from probation to up to four years in prison in washington. i'm alice barr, kris. back to you. all right. thank you very much, alice. and of course, we'll be covering that for you throughout the day. 605 for you this monday morning, a weekend full of reunion and heartbreak, joy spread across israel. as for hostages held by hamas for more than 200 days were reunited with their loved ones. but their rescue it came at the high cost for palestinians. now, over the weekend, an israeli military raid in gaza reunited four israeli hostages with their families as 300 palestinians were killed in the raid, a u.s. official with knowledge of the matter tells nbc news. the u.s.
6:07 am
provided intelligence which helped support the rescue, as senior u.s. officials have told nbc news, the biden administration is considering a unilateral deal with hamas to release american hostages this deal would not include israel, and it would only happen if current cease fire talks involving israel fail. now, back here in the bay area today, a rally is planned outside the san francisco federal building. that is where a three judge panel will hear an appeal in a lawsuit accusing the biden administration of being complicit in a genocide by providing israel with weapons for the war in gaza. the original lawsuit went to court back in january, and at that time, a judge decided that this was not a question for the courts to decide. now, as the judges convene for the appeal, demonstrators are planning to rally in front of the san francisco federal building. during that hearing, which is set at ten this morning in the south bay, there are reports of
6:08 am
thieves targeting your mail. well, not at your post, not at your mailbox, on your house, but in p.o. boxes inside post offices. this is a story you will only see here on nbc bay area lila gibson visits her p.o. box about once a week in the willow glen branch, and over the weekend she went to open her box and discovered someone had stolen all of her mail. a usps postal investigator tells us. gibson's p.o. box is just one of the break ins reported at that post office branch. they are still trying to figure out how many other boxes were broken into. investigators say p.o. box break ins are not that common, but that this is happening more often here in the bay area. by the way, gibson says she originally got that p.o. box so that her mail wouldn't get stolen. i see the post office as an added layer of security. okay, it's i'm thinking it's protected as government property. so that's why i got a
6:09 am
post office box. and to have this happen, i mean, it was really shocking how stealing mail is a federal offense, which could lead to five years in prison and up to $250,000 in fines. wild video along the embarcadero in san francisco from the weekend is coming to light this morning. take a look at that. a large sideshow ended with a car on fire. this was in front of pier one overnight on sunday near the ferry building, but these flames, this sideshow only part one. the crowd then moved to valencia and cesar chavez in the mission district, and that part of the sideshow lasted about 30 minutes before police broke it up. across the bay in oakland. take a look at this sideshow. it started at the intersection of grand avenue and lake park. also overnight on
6:10 am
sunday. it continued, then at several locations around the city. you can see drivers doing stunts and other other setting fireworks off, but one point, you just just happened there. one point, the video appears to show a driver hit someone in the middle of the circle. police later broke up the crowd, but there is no word yet on any possible injuries or arrests. disturbing new numbers show that thousands of north bay residents died prematurely because of wildfire smoke, according to a study published friday in science advances. 2300 sonoma county residents died prematurely from fine particulate matter specifically caused by wildfires between 2008 and 2018. those numbers don't even include those big incidents that happened after 2018, including the kincade fire and the lnu complex. now, the study recorded nearly 700 premature deaths in napa county. fine particulates are linked to a number of serious health
6:11 am
problems, and the study found particulates from wildfire smoke are ten times more harmful to humans than other particulate matter. now we want to take a look at our current air quality, because we know we have seen some of those fires and sometimes the weather conditions kind of trap it. yeah. so we have high pressure on those really hot days. you also don't have a lot of wind as well, and that keeps it from mixing out our air quality. outlook is still moderate for parts of the east bay as well as the coast and the bay, and that means that for people who have any kind of health condition, heart condition, you want to limit your time outside. because of that, particulate matter can get in your lungs and affect not only your lungs, but other parts of your body and your health. so we are going to see some moderate air quality in parts of the bay area today. one way to reduce that is to catch public transit. so as you're heading to the bart station in pleasant hill, we're going to see temperatures in the mid 50s this morning. it will be at about 70 degrees at 10:00, but it's going to be heating up going into the
6:12 am
afternoon. not as hot as what's ahead, but we are starting to see those numbers coming up a few more degrees for the peak of those highs today in the upper 80s in much of the north bay, as well as the east bay, with san jose's high up to 85 degrees. and mike, you've been tracking where we can fill up our gas tanks for a little bit less. yeah, and positive news. i think, on both parts of my report here. first, second best price in the entire state. livermore's foxy gasoline. i know we talked about this place on old first street in livermore. we talked about it friday, but it's down $0.20 over the weekend to 381. so that's great progress there. the star in the south bay is star gas in san jose for 25 on hillsdale avenue. and in the north bay. vallejo has bond fair on sacramento street with 429 on the sign there. thank you for reporting and sharing gasbuddy.com on the roadways. the positive news is that there has been progress at the bay bridge toll plaza. the backup now starting to build as the volume now 612 starting to build throughout the area. but we're looking at our camera from overhead. and we just noticed i
6:13 am
noticed the caltrans crews cleared. and i have noticed now all lanes are being used for. while it was a hesitant to use lanes seven and eight where the earlier crash happened because the signs still said it was closed, but all lanes appear to be taking traffic. scott well, coming up mike on today in the bay, some artists are leaving instagram. we'll tell you why. out to the future is on this monday morning. it looks like we'll lose a little off the top as the markets open in about 20 minutes and from california to hawaii, the brave kayakers undergoing a rigorous and daunting mission to those tropical islands. keep it here. you're watching today in the bay

check out berkeley of what to expect today. it's going to be a cloudy start and nice and cool with some mid 50s at 8:00 at lunchtime. it's a comfortable 66 degrees and we're headed up to close to 70 for today. tomorrow it will be much warmer. we'll take a look at the ramp up in temperatures across the bay area coming up in a few minutes. and great news. we'll look at the live look from our camera at the bay bridge toll plaza. overhead signs, no more lanes listed as closed. lanes seven and eight have been cleared from an earlier crash, which, by the way, got downgraded from major to minor injuries. so everything's better at the bay bridge toll plaza except the backup. and that should start to improve. well good morning. very happy monday to you. indices

way behind other companies on ai. in fact, it's teaming up with chatgpt maker openai to catch up. a number of artists are pulling their art off instagram to prevent the parent company, meta, from using their art to train ai. ai. some artists say they don't want any part of that. this artist, kelly mckernan, says meta is training on everything we've ever publicly shared in order to make human creativity obsolete and replace us with synthetic, cheap content. meta did update its privacy policy recently to warn users. as of june 26th, the company may use their posts to train its ai kind of a double whammy for artists who see their art used to train what they fear will be their eventual replacement. and finally, chris and ginger, a push in japan to allow women to keep their names after they marry. one of japan's biggest business lobbies is asking the japanese parliament to change the law to allow women to continue to use the name
6:19 am
they've used all their lives in business after they are married. it is one of those complex things, you know, tradition, etc. i will point out japan codified women's rights in its constitution. we helped write it, but, you know, it's one of the few western democracies. rather, that's done that. but it is very traditional that that they pick one name. they're allowed to pick the wife's name. they almost never do. and then that person, as they come to business, you know, they they're known as one name for 20 years or whatever. yeah. well, i remember my girlfriend went to med school and it was like, whatever's on your medical license is. that's it, right? you're done. right. so she hadn't had kids yet. and the same with me. i'm like, i know i'll have them at some point and pick up, drop off, you know? yeah. right. that's ten years down the road, like, do i. what do i want to do. so bottom line, you should pick your own name. yeah. right. right i get confused which name is which. i'm like? is this on this one? is this. yeah. oh yeah. yeah.
6:20 am
and then it's just like other knowns that your name under. so i'm like, okay, let's just write it off. but then of course all of our friends, because my husband's also kris everybody calls me sanchez. so i'm like, i get to i got to keep it. yeah all right. thanks, scott. you bet. thanks, scott. yeah. trending this morning, the world's toughest row is underway right now. the competitors on their way to hawaii. and if you haven't heard of this grueling competition, just know that it takes strength and guts. teams of rowers set out yesterday from monterey. they're rowing about 2800 miles all the way. to hawaii. we're tired just thinking about it. they row for two hours, then they get a two hour break. that cycle happens for the entire day. and as you can imagine, it's a journey full of blisters and sleep deprivation. but what amazing. what an amazing accomplishment when you actually get there. all the emotions kind of coming out. you don't know what you're going to face out there. so my team, the hurricane rowing team, has been training here for about
6:21 am
four months and we've just been super blessed with the community and their support. let's take a live look to see where those rowers are right now. wow. they're early into their journey . still just off the coast of california. they're on that two hour schedule. it's like when babies born, you know, like you're two hours, then you have to breastfeed. then you have to, you know, which is more grueling. i don't know, i do know that hawaiian airlines will take you there. also, i was going to say cruises are very popular again. so, you know, and i'm just thinking like good for them. but like, you've been to orange theory with me. i'm crying on the on the roadblock. i'm like, oh my god. 30s oh my god, feel it burn we do at orange theory is like what, 20, you know, 2000, 2500m. so like way skip that day. all right. well we're going to have some great weather for them. thankfully there aren't any storms out there. and we're also going to see our usual marine layer kind of slide over the bay
6:22 am
area. and hold our temperatures down for today. and the heat advisory returns tomorrow. so the view we have this morning will be all clear by tomorrow when you wake up. and that also increases the fire danger with the lack of humidity and some of our inland areas in the hills as those temperatures heat up. but it will be trending cooler for the end of the week as well as this weekend. and if you've been sneezing a lot lately, you may be allergic to grass pollen that's high on the pollen count today. olive trees and weeds are moderate and mold is fairly low at this point. we've been spending a little bit more time outside with the milder temperatures over the weekend, and it does continue for much of the bay area. today will be in the low 70s for san mateo and san francisco, 85 for novato and 83 for moraga. dublin 86 degrees and 90 in livermore. a little bit warmer for those inland areas. but then look at the change tomorrow. we're going up another five, six, seven degrees. and that means triple digits for ukiah and clear lake. and very close in santa rosa,
6:23 am
while san francisco will be in the upper 70s. and then just as fast as it warmed up, it's going to come down a few degrees on wednesday. so we're just going to see that quick spike in temperatures with cooler air ahead for the rest of the week into the weekend. so what we are going to see today won't last as long as it did last week. and we're going to have one, maybe two days, depending on your location of some highs in the 90s and then back to the 80s for the rest of the week. and san francisco will go from mid 60s today to about 72 tomorrow, and then back to the 60s from thursday on. mike, you're reading the signs at the bay bridge. yeah, literally reading the signs and all of them now are moving. well, they're all open. no more closed signs. so that's great for lanes seven and eight over there at the toll plaza. as we look at the backup right here, we're just going to stick with these maps because they just show you a little backup forming on the approach. now i think those metering lights were slowed down a bit. so they can make sure that that span itself handles the new onslaught fine. and there's no problem. we're looking at the

it stands this morning. it appears to have started in the warehouse for the pittsburg theater company off john henry johnson parkway. that fire started shortly before 5:00 yesterday afternoon and burned at least 55 acres. but because of the heat, it spread quickly and came dangerously close to homes within just a few hours, cal fire and contra costa county firefighters did get it under control. now, this latest fire comes as last week's crystal fire in saint helena burned 60 acres the weekend before crews battled the corral fire near tracey, which burned 14,000 acres. cal fire crews up and down the state, now boosting their staffing to peak levels in response to the growing threat. in a matter of hours, apple kicks off its yearly worldwide developers conference in cupertino. it's a week. long event, and we're expecting to see some big announcements as far as hardware improvements now, possibly something that would see improvements to its siri voice command or maybe something to do with ai. all right. we were talking about those fires and the growing threat. carry a hot day on tap.
7:00 am
yeah so tomorrow is going to be the hotter day. today we're seeing the temperatures coming up a few degrees compared to what we had over the weekend. we reached the peak of those highs for tomorrow afternoon inland. now we're not reaching the high without some problem here at the san mateo bridge on the flat section, there's a disabled vehicle. been there for a while, but now a crew has closed one of the lanes to remove that vehicle. so the arrow shows you just at the base of the high rise. that's where all the slowing occurs. hopefully that will clear in the next 20 minutes. wow. that's a tough picture to see. the today show is just moments away, but we are continuing today in the bay on roku, pluto and other platforms. live at eight. the all new updates made to the shake alert daring raid to free those israeli hostages. >> and the state of the americans still being held. it's june 10th. this is "today." mission accomplished.
