"early today" starts right now. good morning, glad you're with me. i'm frances rivera. new this morning. the port of baltimore has been fully reopened more than two months after the francis scott key bridge collapsed. democratic governor wes moore has declared the waterway is free of debris. they are going to rebuild the bridge and it's expected to take six years.

six maintenance workers were killed when a cargo ship lost propulsion and crashed into the bridge, dealing a major blow to the city's economy. now to the fate of the president's son in the hands of the jury. hunter biden declined to take the stand in his own defense in his federal gun trial. jury deliberations will continue in just a few hours. ryan nobles was at the courthouse for the closing arguments. >> reporter: it's in the hands of the jury. six men and six women out deliberating the fate of hunter biden, the first child of a sitting american president to be charged with a crime. many members of the first family in the courtroom throughout the trial. all of this is not evidence, says u.s. attorney leo wise in his statement. people sitting in the gallery are not evidence, he said, adding no one is above the law. the special counsel's accused the president's son of lying on

a federae drug user while trying to buy a gun. the prosecution called ten witnesses, many testifying about his drug use, including around the time he filled out that background check. hunter biden's ex-wife testified she found drug paraphernalia inside his car in october of 2018. and his ex-girlfriend who was dating him at the same time saying he was smoking crack every 20 minutes or so. defense attorney abbe lowell argued the prosecution focussed far too much on his drug abuse over a four-year period, and saying no one witnessed actual drug use during the window of time that he purchased the gun. hunter biden faces a maximum of ten years in prison over these three counts if convicted. his father has already said that he will not offer him a pardon even if the verdict is guilty.

taken to the hospital. on the west coast, the coast guard rescued six people after their boat caught fire on lake tahoe. they had to jump into the lake to escape the flames. the coast guard rescued the boat owners, and a good samaritan saved four others and a dog. no one was hurt. no word on what sparked the fire. the biden administration is considering a plan to protect undocumented immigrants married to u.s. citizens from deportation. according to two sources familiar with the matter, the program known as parole in place would give them access to work permits. it would also make it easier for some undocumented immigrants to get a green card and a path to u.s. citizenship. ho however, the sources stressed that the proposal was not final and the timing was fluid. now to the border crisis. as law enforcement is sounding the alarm about members of a dangerous gang entering the u.s. illegally. here's julia ainsley. the new warning from law enforcement that among the

record number of migrants that have crossed into the u.s. are members of a venezuelan street gang. nbc news learning there are more than 100 homeland security investigations involving suspected members of the venezuelan gang, according to two dhs officials. in the past week, the nypd says a suspected member of the venezuelan gang shot two of its officers. >> so we know that they entered the country illegally. >> reporter: nbc news learned the gang is suspected in criminal cases in at least five states. in one case, three gang members who crossed the border here in texas in the last year threatened two venezuelan women and said they would kill their family members if they did not cooperate in a sex trafficking ring, according to court documents. >> reporter: the women ended up in baton rouge, and police say they were forced to have sex with up to four men a day in this apartment building. how big of a threat are they? >> i mean, they are a grave threat. >> reporter: the nypd's assistant chief tells us they
