"early today" starts right now. good morning, i'm frances rivera. we begin with another historic first for our justice system. the child of a sitting u.s. president has been convicted of a crime. a jury in delaware finding hunter biden guilty of three

federal counts related to the purchase of a gun. nbc's brie jackson kicks off our coverage. >> reporter: hunter biden, president biden's only surviving son found guilty on all three charges tied to the possession of a gun while using narcotics. special counsel david weiss appointed by north maerrick gar brought the charges. >> no one is above the law. >> reporter: during the trial, prosecutors argued hunter knowingly lied on a federal form, checking a box saying he was not an active drug user when he purchased the gun. >> it was these choices and the combination of drugs and guns that made his conduct dangerous. >> reporter: hunter biden has admitted he's struggled with addiction but claimed he was not doing drugs at the time. he has brpreviously called the charges politically motivated.

one of the 12 jurors said that's not the case. >> for us, it's not ploliticall motivated. our politics never played in anything that we said in the jury room. >> reporter: after his conviction, hunter biden released this statement, saying, i am disappointed by the outcome. recovery is possible by the grace of god. first lady jill biden has been by her son's side for most of the trial. president biden did not address the verdict during a previously-scheduled gun safety event, but, in a statement, the president said, i will always be there for hunter, nothing will ever change that. in washington, brie jackson, nbc news. new this morning, at least one person was killed after a commuter bus was hijacked in atlanta. a gunman held 16 passengers and a driver hostage leading cops on a chase and causing damage to several cars. the bus later stopped and former convict joseph grier was

arrested. one person was found on the bus with a gunshot wound and later died from their injuries. it's not clear if that driver or one of the passengers was the one who died. also in atlanta, four people were shot in rampage in the middle of the day at a food court. a gunman shooting three people before he was shot by miss. and a witness described scene of chaos. >> all of a sudden out of nowhere, like an influx of people were sprinting out of there in all different directions, and we were, like, what is going on. and somebody screamed, there's a shooting, there's a shooter, like, run! >> police say an off-duty officer stopped the shooter who was a convicted felon and could not legally own firearms. a socialite who killed two children in a hit-and-run more than three years ago is sentenced to more than a decade in prison. but the chirldren's family and friends say she showed little remorse and got off easy.

>> reporter: a shred of closure for a los angeles-area family still in mourning. >> remember mark and jacob. >> reporter: after the hit-and-run killing of their children. 11-year-old mark, and 8-year-old jacob iskander. she was speeding behind her then-romantic partner. she founded the grossman burn foundation, a philanthropic arm of her husband's burn center. a jury convicted her in february, now a vjudge sentencig her to 15 years to life. but family and friends say she showed little remorse. >> ms. grossman never said i'm sorry for what i did. she only said i'm sorry for what happened to you. that is not apology. >> they're never going to get closure. our family is not going to be the same. avenue every time i go to the house, it's not the same.

>> reporter: in a letter to the judge, grossman wrote, i am not a murderer, saying she did not see anything in the road and would have driven my car into a tree to avoid hitting two little boys. prosecutors say grossman got a light sfentence. >> we're disappointed today. we don't think the judge gave a sentence that was appropriate. >> reporter: they had sought 34 years to life, not 15. >> there were two children murdered in this case, and effectively the sentence that ms. grossman received, effectively reflected one murder and not that of both boys. >> reporter: the young boys' family and friend now s now tryo come to terms with the sentence. >> she got off easy, and there's nothing i can do about it. but i want to know mark and jacob were true angels, and they were perfect kids. >> want to thank morgan chesky for that report. i.c.e. agents arrested eight men suspected of ties to isis

over the weekend. that's according to sources familiar with the matter. all eight are from the central asian country of tajikistan. sources say think cey crossed t southern border, going back more than a year. they face removal proceedings but have not been charged in connection with any alleged plot. the arrests bear similarities to a case we reported last month involving an uzbek migrant with suspected isis ties. the u.s. is now in a quote, heightened threat environment for terrorism. new details on a terrifying stabbing attack that injured several americans while they were on a teaching trip in china. janis mackey frayer is in beijing with the latest. >> reporter: an arrest in the stabbing attack of four u.s. college instructors in a busy chinese park. the aftermath captured in a shocking cell phone video. byst bystanders saying foreigners are

injured. the victims, teachers from cornell college in iowa on an exchange with a university. three of them americans. one of them is the brother of iowa state representative, who said his brother was stabbed in the arm and is okay and in good sp spirits. >> they're tastable and talking with family members. >> reporter: the fourth, an indian national living in iowa. police arrested a 55-year-old map man that said he was angry that one of the teachers bumped into him at the park. nbc news was told it was an isolated incident, adding china is one of the world's safest countries. violence against foreigners in public is rare here, but comes at a tense time for u.s.-china relations, with both sides

trying to revive exchanges. most images and videos of the attack have been tightly controlled or outright censored on social media. a 55-year-old man was arrested at this park. they took a full day to confirm this, and a chinese national was stabbed when they tried to intervene. the injured americans, meanwhile, are said not to be in life-threatening condition, and there is no information on when they might be heading home. janis mackey frayer, beijing. the oregon father who pled guilty to drugging his daughter's friends at a sleepover will spend two years behind bars. he was convicted of three felony counts for lacing their smoothies with sedatives. the girls were 12 at the time and hospitalized after the incident. according to his attorney, he laced the drinks so the girls wouldn't sneak out of the house. much of south florida is under water after heavy rain drenched both sides of the state. it created dangerous conditions

on roadways and submerged neighborhoods. hundreds of flights were delayed at miami's airport and a flood mitigation plan was activated. the city also has multiple sewer trucks working to clear debris. and the wet weather isn't letting up. let's bring in nbc meteorologist angie lassman for how long the storm is expected to stick around. good morning. >> good morning, frances. this unfortunately is not going anywhere any time soon. all of this rain is problematic for folks across the state of florida. you can see all the rain we're dealing with at this hour, and the flood watches topping 7 million. west palm beach down through the keys and out towards fort myers and naples, too. 3 to 6 inches for the widespread area, but isolated areas coming in at 8 inches. this stalled front, all that tropical moisture nearby. flash flooding will be something folks deal with through the next couple days.
