5:30 pm
our newscast 24/7 on roku and other streaming platforms. raj mathai joins us now with what's coming up next at 530. there's a lot going on. here's what we're working on cracking down on crime. thanks to newly installed license plate readers, san francisco leaders say those cameras are helping, but some privacy advocates remain skeptical. also prices are going up at some of your favorite fast food restaurants. why inflation isn't to blame in some cases, and we continue our investigation into alleged workplace bullying within a bay area school district. why? some school officials are now saying that others don't agree with. welcome back. the news at 530 starts right now. thanks so much for joining us. i'm janelle wang and i'm raj mathai. they're already working. san francisco leaders say a new network of newly installed automated cameras is leading to arrests and hundreds more cameras are expected to be up and running by
5:31 pm
next month. here's nbc's christy smith right now. about 100 automated license plate reader cameras are installed in san francisco, and 300 more are coming and while some see that technology as a good first step, others have raised concerns. they are very indistinct and they blend into the background. automated license plate reader cameras are up in san francisco and already getting results at willow on the green in the inner sunset, alex sinclair sees it this way. i think here, using technology to be able to track evidence. cross county borders is an intelligent move. 100 are installed now up and running around the city. 300 more should be operational by july. i think this is the first step to a holistic approach. it's very clear from a on the on the ground mindset that it's not just about catching organized crime, it's also about dealing with mental health. that is a
5:32 pm
strong standpoint of where a lot of theft is happening. earlier this year, we began installing a new network of automated license plate reader cameras in a prepared statement posted on social media, the san francisco police chief outlined how much the technology has helped the department, saying they've received hits on stolen or wanted vehicles, recovered property and made arrests. but some groups have raised concerns about the technology. our big concerns about automated license plate readers is that they are, by definition, mass surveillance. they are not targeted. they're not based on the suspects. they're not based on probable cause that an individual committed a crime. things are changing. technology is everywhere. and so we're not using facial recognition technology, but we are using what we have at our disposal to help us combat issues around crime. the automated license plate reader cameras were funded by a $17.3 million grant from the state's organized retail

theft grant program in san francisco, christie smith, nbc, bay area news. we are just an hour away from the first mayoral debate in san francisco. this will be the first time the candidates will face off after the first debate was canceled. the five candidates participated are mayor london breed, non profit executive daniel lurie, supervisor asha safai, former san francisco mayor mark farrell and board of supervisors president aaron peskin. the debate is happening at 630 tonight at the sidney goldstein theater on hayes street. it will be moderated by new york times san francisco bureau chief heather knight and manny uchitelle of manny's. i think it represents a moment that we're in as a city where the elections here, she's upon us. folks are showing up and there's a lot of work to do. and so there's a sense of being woken up and of activity and of proximity right now to the election that i haven't felt in a while. some of
5:34 pm
the big topics candidates are expected to talk about include the economic recovery of the city, homelessness and open air drug markets. we have a crew at this debate, and we'll bring you the very latest tonight at 11:00. some positive economic news today from the feds. inflation is slowing down a bit, but you probably noticed the prices at your favorite fast food restaurants continue to go up. there's a reason for that. specifically here in california. let's bring in our business and tech reporter scott budman. two months after raising prices, this silicon valley in and out restaurant is still doing big business. i think it's still a good deal. yes, a double double fries and drink will now set you back ten bucks. sure. yeah. i mean, compared to other restaurants or, you know, fast casual, fast food, it's still pretty affordable, i would say. but it's not about inflation. it's because the minimum wage for california fast food workers went up by nearly $5 in april to
5:35 pm
$20 an hour. in and out isn't the only restaurant raising prices to offset that new wage. the bay area is so expensive, so the cost of living is so much here. so i, i, i don't feel bad about paying that for employees. the california minimum wage clearly does have an effect on the cost of fast food. but even with rising prices for customers, the latest government inflation figures show food prices holding steady for the month of may. and while some are watching their starbucks orders more closely, it definitely adds up. before, it was like a $5 drink. now i'm paying with all my additions or my add ons is like ten bucks. customers here are still willing to line up. people are well paid around here and they can afford higher fast food prices. and they're doing it now. when it comes to more expensive things like your mortgage payment, it may be a while before that comes down. just today, the federal reserve saying that despite inflation
5:36 pm
slowing, it's still not quite ready to cut interest rates in santa clara. scott budman nbc, bay area news yes, those that key interest rate remaining unchanged for now. in other news, we have new information about the workplace bullying scandal that involved a supervisor moving his workers desk to a roof. we now know the results of an antioch unified school district investigation. investigative reporter candice nguyen joins us now with a preview of her story that's coming up tonight at 11. candice yeah. hey, janelle, i have been keeping a close eye on this situation that's really rocked this school district. it resulted in an internal investigation and the district hiring outside attorneys to review things. this letter i want to show you dated may 14th, it states the school district determined antioch school supervisor ken turnage did not bully his employee, jim kessler, last year when he told other workers to move kessler's desk onto a roof. you can see it here
5:37 pm
. a ladder right there, leaning against the building, and then a sign that said kessler access. kessler was off this day that it happened, but filed a complaint with hr after he returned. antioch unified's chief human resources officer, concluded the incident was a prank. he called it, and that turnage was trying to, quote, lighten the mood. jim kessler says he's just baffled. i disagree, did you find it funny, jim? nope nope. if every complaint gets denied, where do you go? where do you go? if you are an employee and you have a complaint that you're supposed to go to hr, other employees you see here have also filed bullying complaints against turnage, who's currently on administrative leave. two of those complaints currently under investigation, according to the school district. now, the district's hr chief and now acting superintendent tells us, while it may appear to some complaining parties that their complaints have not been effectively addressed, those employees are not made aware of any specific consequences or discipline which may be imposed
5:38 pm
on other employees. so coming up tonight at 11, you will hear from an employee who was ironically in on this so-called desk prank and regrets it. he says. he gave the green light to turnage. that's tonight at 11 with the investigative unit. i'm candace. when nbc bay area news. candace, thank you. a basketball legend has died. jerry west, who inspired the nba's logo, has passed away. the hall of fame point guard was an all-american athlete at the university of west virginia before coming to the nba, playing 14 seasons with the lakers. he stayed with that organization for nearly three more decades, famously as the general manager for the shaq and kobe led lakers. jerry west also served as an advisor here in the bay area to the warriors, helping guide that roster and helping them win the nba titles in 2015 and 2017. the chase center today featuring that photo right there on the big screen at thrive city. jerry

west was 86 years old. a sour note while moving a prized piano, a viewer feels a mover is holding it hostage. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura, nbc bay area responds next, i'm chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. i'll get you a check on how the reservoirs are doing and the drought, plus how much more cooler temperatures are going to be

who says movers were holding her piano hostage. so she asked our consumer investigator chris chmura to pull some strings. meet kana takahashi. and her yamaha baby grand. nobody puts baby in the corner but kana did
5:42 pm
have to put baby in storage. you see, she inherited this family heirloom after her dad passed unexpectedly. kana then hit a snag. i had to figure out a place to put it. i didn't have a place, so i put it into storage. she hired quality piano movers in hayward back in 2019 to move and store all 88 ivories. the move went fine, but not her storage bill. she expected to pay 50 bucks a month starting in 2019, but kana says the company only built her once in 2020. 250 bucks. she says she paid in full and asked for her piano back. they completely ghosted me. covid 19 was happening, so kana gave some leeway. but she says she repeatedly asked for her piano back in 2020, 21, 22 and 23. what is happening to my piano? is my piano still there? are they still in business? and they never got back to me with
5:43 pm
anything. then last year, she says, quality piano movers suddenly resurfaced, demanding a grand for storing her baby grand. she wrote an email saying i was ready to take my piano back. since 2020, i will not pay for the last three years that you've held my piano as collateral. because i wasn't getting any response. i reached out to nbc bay area responds because i see that bay area responds when nbc reaches out. that's exactly what happened. we contacted quality piano movers. it did not share an accounting of karna's storage fees, but it waived the $1,000 it wanted and gave kana her piano back. one of the owners wrote us and said, all i would like to say is that i do take responsibility for what has happened. during that time, i was dealing with work and other problems as we looked up quality piano movers, state license status revoked the bureau of household goods and services, which licenses movers,
5:44 pm
told us it revoked the license in march of 2021 for the company's failure to file their quarterly report and fees. the bureau went on to say. currently, quality piano movers is not authorized to conduct household moves. to check that out, our producer yana, called quality piano movers this past friday. i'm looking to get some information about moving a piano. not only did someone answer, they said they could move a piano locally for us in the next two weeks. okay, so you're saying $500 from just want to check from walnut creek to san jose? we emailed quality piano movers about its license. we're still waiting for a response. we. kana, and her baby grand are reunited. how special is it to you? it is. it's like a family member. thank you for helping me. i i can't imagine a happier ending. she's thrilled and curious what happened and
5:45 pm
our other customers in the same bind. do they all need to reach out to kris kimura? that's music to my ears. it sounds very nice. she was very happy. kris and our team is very are very happy to help as well for sure. let's talk about our weather. thank goodness so good for the weekend ahead. let's take a look at those. look at this comparison here from 97 in santa rosa yesterday down to 81 today. concord from 100 to 86. we also dropped from 92 in san jose down to 82.
5:46 pm
a lot of that heat for that wave off towards the east. so that's going to allow some fog to form at the coastline as the storm track tries to get closer here for us. so i do see numbers dropping a few more degrees for tomorrow. but i think as you get up in the morning, the biggest thing you're going to notice is the fog back at the coastline. pretty thick. and also some of those low clouds moving to the east bay, north bay and the south bay. so this is at 7:00 in the morning. we'll have those early clouds should clear back pretty quickly. by 10:00 in the morning, most of us under sunshine. but do notice if you're headed anywhere near the beaches. we'll continue to see that fog staying with us. morning temperatures will begin on the colder side. here we are back down to maybe some jacket weather for you tomorrow morning. 57 here over the south bay peninsula at 55 san francisco. maybe heading into work there, 53 for the morning and the east bay double fives as we move through tomorrow afternoon. numbers going down a
5:47 pm
couple more degrees. just crazy to think about. we had that hot 101 in concord yesterday and tomorrow. we're at 8175. martinez, 75, in napa. so a real beautiful day here across the bay area. get near the bay and also the coast. we'll see a mix of some 50s and 60s. so good weather shaping up for us here as we head through our forecast on thursday. but with some of that hot weather recently, you may be curious about the drought. well, i can show you the worst. drought continues to be over texas. parts of the four corners and some parts here of kansas. but for us we are drought free. so just because we got into a little bit of a heat spell, it doesn't mean we're starting to see the drought come back, right? yet, in fact, based on the current reservoir levels that we're seeing, we shouldn't be heading back into any kind of drought here through the next couple of months. not only bay area wide, but statewide. we're doing good on these numbers. look at this. 91% of capacity, east bay mud. you kris 89, lexington 89. marin water 86,
5:48 pm
and lake sonoma coming in at 68% of capacity on the 7-day forecast. we are coming in with 60s and san francisco next two days and then some low 70s this upcoming weekend. and for the inland valleys in my forecast, we're staying on the steady trend of 80 will go up a little bit and then back down again. i really think this is just some beautiful weather. now coming up tonight at 6:00, we'll talk more about the travel delays that are stacking up across parts of the east coast. we're talking about hundreds of flights yesterday and also today. our weather is pretty perfect. yeah. no complaints. thank you jeff. thanks, jeff. up next, a bay area kid is having his artwork noticed on a big stage how his love for golf translated to him getting a special national honor. we're back in , tiger

5:53 pm
are handover, the dream big is something, you know, kids can think of. something which no one thought about it that makes something they're proud. or maybe something they can make proud. every junior who attends the major championship will be given one of sidhu's posters, as he and his family are looking forward to nbc's coverage of the tournament at the end of the month to see if he gets a shout out for his winning poster in pleasanton. anthony flores, nbc bay area congrats to him. still ahead, russian navy ships have arrived in cuba. the reason for the visit and how the us is keeping a norman, bad news... i never graduated from med school. what? -but the good news is... xfinity mobile just got even better! now, you can automatically connect to wifi speeds up to a gig on the go. plus, buy one unlimited line and get one free for a year. i gotta get this deal... i know... faster wifi and savings? ...i don't want to miss that.

velena jones. as crime numbers in oakland trend down, opd says they've arrested several suspects working alone and in groups to commit nearly 40 crimes throughout the town this year. while we have seen an overall decrease in the number of violent crimes identified, our work is far from over. in a press conference today, oakland police say video surveillance and evidence found at the home of 32 year old derek behrens proves he's responsible for four different home robberies and burglaries in april in the highland park area. police say he has a lengthy criminal history for similar crimes throughout the county. suspect was just scoping out the area, he would just normally drive around. he would park several blocks away and then walk to the locations that he wanted to burglarize. opd says they also arrested a group of 417 year olds in connection with more than 30 commercial burglaries and armed robberies since january. in a number of the
