the east bay, and you're going to notice a more of a cool down as we go into our thursday. not much of a noticeable change on into tomorrow either, but father's day weekend. i'll tell you why. we're looking at a change when it comes to those wind speeds. i'll be guiding you through that full forecast coming up in a little bit. back to you. all right. thank you very much. we do have new details this morning on a deadly chain reaction crash in the east bay. happened a little before 1030 last night on northbound 880 near fremont boulevard. a half a dozen cars were involved. it closed all lanes in that direction for more than two hours. the chp says a 56 year old man from newark died. he's not yet been identified. no one else was seriously injured, and the chp is still trying to determine the cause. mike has a look at the roads for us now. is it all clear right now? yeah, completely clear. at about 1:00 this morning. and we're looking at northbound 101 coming up past the tesla plant over here and up toward the fremont boulevard exit. cushing, you know, the

area through the portion of the nimitz. so it's a smooth drive right now. in fact, all sensors throughout this area and most of the bay looking really clear. so that's a nice start for most of our folks. commute a little blowing out of the altamont pass. pretty typical getting over here through contra costa county. nothing real big deal. the north bay, there is one crash in sonoma on 121. no injuries. and i'm tracking that. meanwhile, back to you. thanks, mike. the mayor of san jose. you know what? we're going to tell a little bit more about here. i did see a little slowing right here. there was some construction overnight. mare island, the bridge folks know that heading to or from vallejo and there is a lane restriction. then that's probably why we're still seeing a little bit of slowing. we do hope that's going to be a no more of an issue. and getting up toward the carquinez bridge, that crew should clear over the next half hour. we'll send it right over to you now. all right, mike, thank you for that. now, the mayor of san jose is making his priorities clear in a push to get unhoused people off the streets and out of the waterways. today, the bay's kris sanchez joins us now with why affordable housing advocates

actually might be a little disappointed here. chris well, good morning to you, laura. and ginger. so mayor matt mahan says that this is an historic investment and just what the city needs in order to address the crisis of people living on the street. i want to start with the numbers. let's take a look at those really quick. we are talking $40 million toward affordable housing and $27 million for interim housing plus waterway cleanup. the mayor says this will provide 1200 additional spaces for people to come in off the streets. that is on top of the capacity the city already has. and the mayor says the city will require people to come in. now, the mayor calls this an historic effort, but it comes at a cost. a shift of funds away from affordable housing, which some housing advocates say is risky. we cannot have completely unmanaged and unsheltered encampments all over the city. this is not sustainable. continued dollars

for interim housing that provides immediate relief and stability. but we can't take our foot off the gas for affordable housing. now, the mayor says that the biggest reason for getting people off the streets is that it is the right thing to do, but also the waterways need to be clear in order for the city to avoid fines for having waterways that are not clear in san jose. kris sanchez today in the bay. all right. want to continue to follow. thank you, kris, for the latest developing right now overnight drama playing out on one southern california college campus. the president of cal state los angeles is among those sheltering in her office after pro-palestine protesters took over one of the main buildings. here's some new video overnight showing the outside of the student services building. up to 100 protesters set up barricades about 12 hours ago. the school last night issued a shelter in place. a handful of school

employees are said to be inside, and some are trying to help resolve the conflict. the school says the protest is unauthorize and so far police are taking a hands off approach. we're taking a live look in washington dc this morning. we're later today, former president donald trump will return to capitol hill. now this will actually be his first time back since the january 6th riots. trump is set to visit the house and senate campaign headquarters that is near the us capitol, where he'll deliver remarks. now, the meetings are reportedly private. they'll focus on issues for his campaign. the presumptive republican presidential nominee, also expected to speak at the business roundtable, which is also in washington, dc. also on capitol hill, democrats plan to vote on legislation that would protect access to ivf treatments in the united states today in the bay's alice barr joins us now. alice, it's interesting because this is the second time

this month alone that democrats have really pushed for a vote related to reproductive rights. they're probably seeing some votes there. yeah, laura, that's no coincidence because democrats do see this as a winning issue for them. and an important issue for voters. and they are striving to show a contrast between democrats and republicans on the issue of reproductive rights. of course, ivf is a treatment that millions of americans use and we saw nationwide uproar earlier this year when alabama put some restrictions in place, though they were later overturned. and just yesterday the southern baptist convention came out against ivf. it's the largest and most politically powerful protestant denomination in the country. this new package of bills would prevent states from imposing restrictions, as well as expanding access for service members and veterans and requiring insurance plans to cover fertility treatments. senator tammy duckworth is one of several lawmakers pushing for

the vote today. ivf helped her grow her own family. my battle with infertility was one of the most heartbreaking struggles of my life, my miscarriage more painful than any wound i earned in iraq. so excuse me if i took it personally when the same republicans relying on nra blood money to get elected suggested that women like me are committing acts akin to murder. many republican senators say they also support ivf. they proposed their own bill that would have cut funding to any state that restricted it. but their party is expected to block this bill today. republicans have been accusing democrats of fearmongering and sowing confusion on this issue. laura we'll take it to heart. thank you very much. alice barr from washington on now to decision 2024, in san francisco. so the

the headlands in the distance. we're waiting the sunrise. give it about 2030 more minutes. now as we do check our trend there in san francisco. we're starting off in the low 50s and it will be a good gradual warm up as we go on into lunchtime with some partly cloudy skies there and temperatures in the 60 for the city today so that cooling continues. it will be pretty similar to yesterday. sunny and breezy, so not too hot, not too cold for people that like it just right there in the middle. but i'll tell you why we're tracking this windy father's day. what might be happening in the atmosphere. i'll be back in a second, but mike is helping you get around with some cheaper gas prices. yeah, they're all still signs below four bucks. they're all in alameda county, but the lowest in near contra costa county in contra costa county. nearby is 429. it's at the valero in concord on willow pass road in the south bay in cupertino. the low is 435 at great gas on north deanza boulevard and in san francisco, the low price there is 469. that's the best we can find. it's a national petroleum on cesar chavez street. they're looking at the charts on

enough, which he did. but a delaware court said that deal was too big and the board was too cozy with musk. musk tweeted he will win the vote today and get his billions. the fed did his expected and kept interest rates steady, and indicated there's probably one instance to cut rates later this year. inflation min definitely has slowed cpi data out there yesterday showed in aggregate no changes in prices month to month, and the head of the fed says jobs and wages have returned to their pre-pandemic highs. overall, a broad set of indicators suggest that conditions in the labor market have returned to about where they stood on the eve of the pandemic. relatively tight but not overheated. so with the economy chugging along, the fed is reluctant to cut rates. remember, the fed uses interest rates to slow the economy to fight inflation. so there are two more fed meetings before the presidential election later next month and september. which means

if there is a rate cut before the election, it will likely come in september, which puts the fed in a weird position influencing the economy and the stock market. just before november, anyone who saw hamilton will remember that the fed is a very independent body and consequently they want to maintain that perception of independence and they don't want the perception that they are meddling in elections. so in a perfect world, the federal reserve wants to take a backstage approach. they want to stay backstage during election cycles as much as possible, and then they can emerge once the political situation has stabilized. i love the hamilton reference, so we can all understand. but yes, i think if the fed cuts in september, there will be a group of people that criticize the fed as somehow, you know, biden is influencing and there is no influence between the president and the head of the fed. right. exactly interesting stuff as always, scott. thank you. it is 518

right now. there's a new honor for the pride of san mateo. tom brady is the latest inductee to the new england patriots hall of fame. the team last night inducted him in a special ceremony at gillette stadium. more than 100 former teammates, coaches and patriots staff attended. patriots owner robert kraft also made this announcement. there's only one iconic number that will always represent tom brady. and tonight i promise that it will never be worn again. as the number 12 is now now officially retired, brady spent his first 20 seasons behind center with the patriots, leading them to six super bowl championships. he retired at the end of 2022 season after finishing his career with tampa bay. look at all the fans out there. his first 20 years. i

san francisco, and some low 70s as we make our way into the east bay shoreline in hayward. i mentioned at the top of the show that we're going to get into more breezy and windy pattern this afternoon, similar to yesterday. we get those breezy winds on into the afternoon, focusing mainly through concord, the delta, the altamont pass for any potential of wildfire spreading quickly there. similar pattern for tomorrow. you might be noticing it a bit more gustier there through the marin county coastline. and as we look ahead, long range. this is what's interesting and what we're watching now with the weather service, this kind of shading, that contour of the blue. there dropping in from the gulf of alaska. now, what's going to determine those wind speeds is where the axis sets up. so if we slip right there through the middle, depending on where it sets up, that will be the direction that those winds point. of course, as we get those warmer temperatures, dry fuels out there, we're watching if those winds will be coming offshore or onshore, making it for a breezy coastline. so overall, we're going to enjoy

this tranquil weather while we have it there in san francisco for today and tomorrow. slightly warmer through saturday, and then we'll watch those wind speeds on sunday. father's day for all the dads out there and in our inland valleys, stable temperatures in the 80s. but of course, as we get closer to the weekend and those wind models, i'll keep an eye on that for you here in today in the bay. we'll go into next week celebrating juneteenth on wednesday with a mild mid-'eighties. now, mike, you've got a jam on the east shore freeway. i do right here. now unfortunately, as chance would have it, the disabled big rig is right behind this camera structure here. so we can't actually see the rig, but you can see the impact quickly building to over a mile. now westbound 80 coming in through emeryville out of berkeley is jammed right now. notice the folks right here. this is a frontage road called frontage road. it will take you past this jam closer to the bay bridge. but then as you get close to the berkeley curve, it's complicated. shell mound. the surface streets will be tough. so if you don't really know the area, you may just want to stay

washington is off this morning. good to have you, ginger. i'm laura garcia. let's start out with a look of that forecast. cinthia pimentel is tracking what we can expect. a nice day ahead a nice day ahead. we have 17 minutes to the sunrise. guess what. it's many friday to all of those who celebrate. but it is a bit of a sweater weather kind of morning as we start off in the low 50s through san francisco, the north bay, sonoma at 51 mid 50s out towards the tri-valley in dublin and will do 58 degrees to start our day here in san jose. let's keep it in the south bay. take a look at our planner in saratoga. good morning mid 50s to start there. and as we go on into lunchtime mild 74 degrees and will hover just under the low 80s this afternoon. so slightly cooler throughout the entire bay area. i'll guide you through the microclimate forecast coming up. but mike still tracking that jam in emeryville. yeah things are changing. we saw a number of emergency crews come through the area, including what i think was an ambulance, as well as another fire truck slowing jammed up right here, still approaching

the powell exit or on ramp there. we're looking at the big backup because of a big rig reportedly in the middle of westbound 80. as you're getting through emeryville, the jam now starts about two three miles back before you get to university. folks are slowing through the area. that frontage road was clear, but it won't take you past the crash, so you might as well stay in the backup and just be with everybody else. other folks might, instead of going to the bay bridge because of this big backup, they may start to head over toward that richmond bridge. so we're going to track that volume and perhaps the shift in the ripple effect over here. over here i've circled slowing sudden slowing on south. 242 this may be a separate issue for the area. concord in toward pleasant hill, the rest of the bay and easy drive back to you. all right. looks good. thank you. mike 532 right now two decision 2024 and first lady doctor jill biden on a five state campaign swing to help raise money for her husband's reelection campaign. today in the bay's bob redell is live this morning, bob. the first lady will make two other stops before ending her day here in the bay area correct. good morning to ginger and laura.

doctor jill biden will campaign earlier today or later today, i should say in wisconsin. min to before coming here to the bay area tonight landing at moffett field in mountain view. then tomorrow afternoon, she'll speak at a campaign fundraiser in los gatos before flying out to nevada and arizona and then returning to southern california for major fundraisers saturday night with her husband and former president barack obama. doctor. biden was in the news last week for shuttling back and forth between france for d-day ceremonies and delaware for her son hunter's trial, where he was convicted on three felony gun charges, which has obviously taken a toll on her and her family. even though the bay area is a democratic stronghold, there's still a lot of money available for republicans, which is why last week, former president trump spoke at a fundraiser in the pacific heights neighborhood of san francisco to raise money for his reelection campaign. a single

vip ticket to that event reportedly cost $50,000. also last week, vice president kamala harris, she campaigned in oakland before attending a fundraiser across the bay in san francisco, reporting live bob redell today in the bay thank you for that, bob. well, while we're talking politic here, there's a politician in england making a startling promise. if he's elected to parliament, he will let ai decide every vote and every policy decision. that is something different. scott mcgrew you talked to steve endicott and you say the whole thing reminds you a bit of max headroom? yeah only a certain portion of our viewers are going to know who max headroom is. but yeah, steve endicott is a fully computerized campaign starting with a virtual version of himself he calls a ai. steve. now you can interact with ai. steve. right now on the campaign website, but the real steve anticipates a day where his avatar can answer questions on television, attend press conferences, you name it. so

here they are, side by side. ai steve and steve. steve, you'll hear from the real steve in a second. now the only thing the ai can't do is walk into the u.k. house of commons and vote yay or nay. so if he's elected, the real steve will have to do that part. and yes, he's going to let the ai tell him how to vote. and this is not as crazy as it sounds. the ai has been talking to constituents all over steve's district in the beach town of brighton, asking voters what they want from government, what makes them happy, what troubles they have. so the idea is the ai will make the right decisions for the people it represent s because it knows them well. it's not my opinion that counts. it's the people's opinion that counts. and i'll just implement what they tell me to implement, which is not crazy . i mean, that's just representative democracy. crazy. no politician in the world does it. they get elected and they go off and do what they like. well, you're all right. well, as you might imagine, steve and i,

steve, have gotten a lot of attention, which is great for a campaign. he says not everybody gets it, especially if they haven't tried talking to his real self and his virtual politician self. he says those people are more likely to compare all this to scary science fiction. so from the people having gone to the website, haven't looked at what we're doing. all we get is skynet chucked out as and black mirror. yeah, which is fine. all good. all publicity is good publicity, but ideally, once they react, they should also take the effort to go and have a look at what we're doing. when they do. it's overwhelmingly positive because the ethos of dy can argue with democratization. talking to your to your voters on a day by day basis. who can argue with that? imagine that now. the election is july 4th. steve endicott is running for a seat that was held by the green party. that candidate retired. he says his politics don't matter because he's going to vote the way the people want him

to vote, because of how it all plays out. but couldn't there be a floor on this as well? you know, he's he's making every vote based on his constituents in the comments and suggestions. but couldn't someone just hack that system? they could game the seat right? yeah. i mean, somebody could get in there and suggest something. so he has put together a committee, what he calls validators, to make sure there's nothing really oddball in the data that's coming in. because you you always have to you know, kind of wash the data. so if somebody's like, hey, let's have 100% tax or, hey, let's attack france. you know, that gets thrown out. but when you think about it, politics is often about gaming the system, because here in america we have special interest groups. lobbyists spend a lot of money getting into in front of politicians to have their thing done and not our thing. interesting. it's really interesting. he's a character too. yes, he is, and it's fascinating when it's going to come down to a very close vote or a controversial issue, then maybe people are going to start to question even. we'll have to see. he has to win first. yes he does. all right. fascinating stuff. thanks scott. you bet. well, the sale of oakland's

share of the coliseum complex is now official. council members have approved selling the city's 50% stake to the african american sports and entertainment group for $105 million. the group wants to turn the 112 acre property into a mixed use area, including affordable housing, retail and green space. now, the a's owned the other half of the property and takeover talks with the team are ongoing. well, happening tomorrow, another sure sign of summer. here we go. bring on the racing pigs. the bay area's largest county fair kicks off in pleasanton. alameda county fair opens at noon tomorrow. the usual favorites are back, including the rides and games that fair food not just horse racing, but as i mentioned, the pigs also concerts for musical acts including johnny gill. remember him from new edition, country superstar ashley cook and salsa stars sonora tropicana. they fair only has two fireworks shows this year. the first is going to happen tomorrow, friday night at 930

and closing night july seventh. okay, so who's ready for some funnel cakes? let's check in with cinthia pimentel. the weather's going to cooperate to. and some nachos with jalapenos. ooh, you're making me hungry out there. let's get this summer started out there in pleasanton. as we go through the weekend. it will be a warm day tomorrow and on saturday though as we go on into sunday, a bit of a cool down. as i mentioned a couple minutes ago, we're tracking a change in those wind speeds. speaking of wind speeds, how about we go to angels and giants tomorrow night? there in the city, of course, breezy. bring those extra layers, the hats, the beanies, everything to keep you warm as temperatures will dip down into some cool 60s later on that friday night. let's come down here to the south bay of first of a kind event coming down here to the city. let's go to the daytime rave out there at discovery meadow park. it will go from 2 to 9 in the evening on saturday. good music, good vibes and just enjoying downtown san jose. i'll have a look at the rest of the

microclimate forecast coming up. but mike, you're hearing about some progress in emeryville. yeah, we the big rig that was disabled in the middle of westbound 80, that has been cleared, but there's still another vehicle involved in that crash. and you can see at the bottom of the screen we found some flashing lights barely visible. there's a hook and ladder truck, or at least a fire truck there that's blocking your middle lanes. as long as that's there, we know that lane remaining vehicle is still there. no major injuries reported, but a big backup now. westbound 80, the backup. the brake lights really start back here towards solano avenue past university. so this is about three almost four miles of backup now westbound coming toward the bay bridge. i have not seen a major impact as far as the shift going instead from the bay bridge toward that richmond bridge. we're going to keep watching that because that's likely with more folks coming out of contra costa county. as we look at the rest bay, it's a pretty smooth, easy drive down here in san jose. you're pretty typical build for highway 101. a note looking ahead today is the start the blue line work. so again as we've had shifts, shifts in the drive, you can't take the train. you can take the busses between santa teresa and capitol

closed all day, the damage estimated at more than $100,000. police in pinole are talking about some scary moments this week when someone attacked a clerk inside the police department headquarters. cameras capture what happened tuesday afternoon. you can see a man ring the bell several times. he then grabs the clerk by her arm right there, and then he climbs over the counter, going after her. the clerk managed to break free and make her way into another area. with the help of a staff member. police say she suffered minor injuries, but she's still shaken up by what happened. very scary. very traumatic for the employee. fortunately there were other employees in the building. that one helped her get into the administrative office area and secure the door there. officers identify the suspect as 65 year old chester victor from san pablo. he's facing multiple felony charges so far. they're

will have full coverage of the first lady's visit coming up, that peace deal between israel and hamas has hit a snag after hamas asked for revisions. now, hamas said it like the deal a few weeks ago, back when israel said it didn't like it, and now the sides have flip flopped. a deal was on the table that was virtually identical to proposal that hamas put forward on may the 6th, a deal that the entire world is behind a deal. israel is accepted and hamas could have answered with a single word yes. instead hamas waited nearly two weeks and then proposed more changes, a number of which go beyond positions that had previously taken and accepted. the supreme court will release new decisions today and tomorrow. we're still waiting on some big ones. access to abortion pills, guns owned by domestic abusers and

now taking his jam elsewhere. it follows word that this week, chestnut was banned from the nathan's july 4th hot dog eating contest due to a partnership with impossible's plant based dogs. netflix has announced a live showdown called unfit eat beef for labor day. now it'll be a hot dog eating contest or event against his longtime rival takeru kobayashi. rumors are swirling kobayashi may be ready to retire from competitive eating, so this may be one last dog eat dog event involving the two top dogs. oh my goodness. wow jaws versus the rabbit. i think that's his nickname. takeru kobayashi. i've been following him since he was banned. yeah, that's good. that's true. i watched the documentary about his training regimen. oh you did? yeah. i don't know if i want to see that. what do you do? he goes to a local restaurant and eats dessert first. then he gets through the psychological build. because once you have sugar, you feel full, right? and then he says, then you really got to put in the work. that's interesting.

senator is celebrating the advancement of four bills to support california students. the south bay's dave cortese authored the bills, which the assembly's education committee just approved. now, all are meant to help students in vulnerable populations. one bill would introduce a guaranteed income program to provide financial support for homeless high school seniors. recipients would get $1,000 a month for four months to help transition to college or to a career. now, the other bills would boost funding for schools and school safety. coming up, locked down protesters in los angeles occupy a college campus building leading school administrators still inside, including the university president. an update on the growing tensions right wno
