mover or its agents from liability. if you have to complain, we have a separate video showing you how. thank you chris. right now at 6:00, a deadly chain reaction crash closes the direction of an east bay freeway for several hours. new details this morning about the victims. also, while you were sleeping, a car slams into a liquor store. all that's left by the time that police arrive. a big mess for the owner. we'll update the chaotic aftermath and helping more people lock down their luck. a south bay cities, new plans to better support the homeless. this is today in the bay. good morning. 6:00 on a busy thursday morning. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia, and i'm ginger conejero saab marcus washington is off today and we are tracking breaking news affecting your morning commute. lanes of 580 are shut down. mike, i know
6:01 am
you've got more on this. it's a very serious crash. that's what we can tell you right now. it involves a motorcycle. let me show you. most of the bay looks just fine. the big issue right now is over in the tri-valley west 580, just off of north livermore avenue. all lanes have just been closed because of a major crash involving a motorcycle. we're told a big rig also involved there. a pickup truck. those are the initial reports coming into the area. so west 580 is starting to show the buildup. this is in the commute direction right now. there is one option for you the backup does not happen until just about north first street. folks know this area, so you can get on to surface streets. that will add a lot of traffic, but it does not necessarily take you past all the backup. so i'm going to say watch for that and don't plan on scrambling around there. might not be a great option for you unless you head down in toward livermore a little earlier. now the other issue, westbound 80 down the east shore freeway, that big rig did clear. so there's recovery for the eastshore freeway, but very slow from golden gate fields down to about the edge of emeryville. over to you, cynthia. thank you.

mike. well, we're tracking a bit of a cooler start to our thursday. that beautiful sunrise over dublin, mid 50s there, the june gloom changes in visibilities there in san francisco need you to be careful . of course richmond about the same 53 as we look over the toll plaza. and in san jose a bit of a mild start, but it is sweater weather as we get ready to head out the door. mostly compared to yesterday. sunny and breezy. not much change as we go on into our weekend though. we are tracking stable temperatures, but that change in the wind pattern for father's day. i'll guide you through that coming up in a few minutes. back to you. all right. thank you very much. new details this morning on a deadly chain reaction crash in the east bay. it happened a little before 1030 last night on northbound 880 near fremont boulevard. half a dozen cars were involved, and it closed all lanes in that direction for more than two hours. the chp says a 56 year old man from newark died. he has not been identified yet. no one else was seriously injured. the chp is still trying to determine the cause and new at six. police

in san leandro are investigating an apparent smash and grab burglary at a high end specialty store. now, you can see from this video where a car barreled through the storefront merchendise. there you can see it's scattered everywhere. it happened around 4 a.m. at the gourmet cellar on washington avenue. police are not confirming any details yet, and it's still unclear what was taken. there's also no word on any possible suspects. developing right now, an overnight drama playing out on one southern california college campus. the president of cal state los angeles is among those sheltering in her office after pro-palestinian protesters took over one of the main buildings. now, here's some new video overnight showing the outside of the student services building up to 100 protesters set up barricades about 12 hours ago. the school last night issued a shelter in place, and a handful of school employees are said to be inside. some are trying to help resolve the conflict. the school says the protest is

unauthorize and so far police are taking a hands off approach. back in the bay area, a live look in san jose. this morning. that's where mayor matt mahan is making his priorities clear in his push to get unhoused people off the streets and away from waterways. today, in the bates, kris sanchez joins us live in san jose this morning. chris, affordable housing advocates feeling a little let down here, right. so mayor matt mahan says that this is an historic investment in the unhoused population. but this is a shift in the money that voters wanted toward affordable housing. let's take a look at those numbers so that you know what we're talking about, that the city is now allotting $22 million toward affordable housing, which is less than half of the money that was allotted in last year's budget, choosing instead to spend $27 million on interim housing and clearing waterways instead, this would create space
6:05 am
for 1200 more people to leave encampments. now that is on top of the capacity the city already has in terms of shelter space. but what the mayor calls an historic effort comes with that cost, and that is that shift of measure e funds. voters passed measure e four years ago specifically to create more affordable housing. now, some housing advocates say losing focus on affordable housing is risky, but the mayor says it's what the city needs to do right now. we cannot have complete, unmanaged, unsheltered encampments all over the city. this is not sustainable. continued dollars for interim housing that provides immediate relief and stability. but we can't take our foot off the gas for affordable housing. now that affordable housing number could change if the city can secure grants from the state for that housing. but the city is under a lot of pressure to clean up the waterways by next summer or risk

fines by the state. the san francisco bay regional water quality control board over violations to state mandates and the clean water act. now, in addition to a focus on the unhoused, the mayor says that this budget also shows a commitment to core services like public safety and keeping our libraries open as well as making sure that there are other services available to everyone in the city of san jose. in san jose. kris sanchez. today in the bay. all right. thanks for the very latest there, chris. it is 605 right now. now let's take a live look at capitol hill, where later today, former president donald trump returns for the first time since the january 6th capitol siege. he is set to visit the gop house and senate campaign headquarters near the capitol. the meetings will reportedly be private but focused on issues ahead of the fall election. the presumptive republican presidential nominee is also expected to speak at a business roundtable, while also on capitol hill. democrats plan

to vote on legislation that would protect access to ivf treatments in the country. today in the bay's alice barr is live in washington this morning. and alice, this is the second time this month that democrats have pushed for a vote to tied to reproductive rights. no coincidence, ginger, because democrats do see this as a winning issue for them. and an important issue for voters. and they are trying to show a contrast between the two political parties on the issue of reproductive rights. in vitro fertilization, of course, is a treatment used by millions of families. and we saw nationwide uproar just a little earlier this year when access to ivf was put at risk temporarily at least in alabama. and just yesterday, the southern baptist convention came out against ivf. it's the largest and most politically powerful protestant denomination in the country. this new package of bills would prevent states from imposing restrictions, expenses and access for service

members and veterans and require insurance plans to cover fertility treatments. senator tammy duckworth is one of several lawmakers pushing for the vote today. ivf helped her grow her own family. my battle with infertility was one of the most heartbreaking struggles of my life. my miscarriage more painful than any wound i earned in iraq. so excuse me if i took it personally when the same republicans relying on nra blood money to get elected suggested that women like me are committing acts akin to murder. in a statement, the biden administration expressed support for senator duckworth's proposal . many republican senators say that they do support ivf and proposed their own legislation that would have cut funding to any state that restricts it. but the gop is expected to block this vote today. there are many in the republican party accusing democrats of fearmongering and sowing confusion on this issue. ginger definitely something to

still keep an eye out for. thank you alice. it is 608 on your thursday morning friday eve, baby friday. whatever you want to call it. we are tracking your thursday forecast as we take a live look outside overlooking san francisco. cynthia is in for kerry this morning. nice day ahead. yeah, nice day after we mix out of that june gloom there in san francisco. let's come down here into the south bay. a stunning view of our sunrise over the valley right now. temperatures starting off a bit on the cooler side. upper 50s yesterday at this hour we were in the mid 60s. so that tells you something. we'll mix out into more sunshine as we go on into the mid morning hours. perfect for that thursday morning walk and into lunchtime. we should be hovering in the mid 70s ahead after that june gloom. sunny, mild breezy day similar to yesterday, tomorrow kicking off the weekend. slightly warmer temperatures. i'll guide you through that and i'll also show you what's happening for father's day. why the change in the wind pattern could elevate our fire danger. i'll be back
6:10 am
with that in a second, but mike is helping you get around with some cheaper gas prices. yeah. we're trying. cynthia. now, the signs below, four bucks, they're all in alameda county. we talked about fremont and livermore after the last couple of days, but in nearby contra costa county, the lowest we find is 429 at the valero in concord, on willow pass road in the south bay in cupertino. here, the middle number, the low, is 435 at great gas on north deanza boulevard, and in san francisco, the low is 469. in that city and the county, the best we could find is there at national petroleum on cesar chavez street . you can report and you can get the prices over here. gasbuddy.com from now on the roadways, we do have one major incident. in fact, i've just heard that this is a deadly crash that is blocking lanes of westbound 580, a motorcycle, a big rig, a pickup truck are some of the vehicles involved there. and i have all of the lanes blocked. chp says that you can get by on the fast track. they usually waive the fast track fee, but we're going to wait and see and get confirmation. the fast track lane is open west 580. the backup extends back to
6:11 am
about vasco, and that means a big backup on city streets expected. as folks probably head over to stanley, we will continue to track that that serious incident, but that's the only big deal for traffic as far as the bay area is concerned. back to you. well, 610 on your thursday morning, lots more to come, including a big day, a $56 billion day for tesla out to the futures this morning. we've got some good inflation news. but the dow is going to turn negative on the open paying tribute to sports history. coming up on today in the bay. the giants unveil their throwback uniforms honoring some of baseball's pioneers. plus we can't be friends, but about to just be eating you. hitting the halfway point of 2024 with some of the top hits so far this year ahead on today in the bay. find out if your favorites make a new list. now going viral. love i'll

bit of a cool down today and what the weekend holds in store coming up, and we are still watching this deadly crash situation over on west 580. only the fast track lane is open right now getting past the scene. so somewhere between north livermore and isabel, the crash is there backing up traffic, and folks are backed up to where they join in out of contra costa county. vasco road going to be a longer commute for these folks. look at this number at the bottom of the screen from grant line. it's over seven, about 70 minutes over an hour from grant line road to 680, the dublin interchange. well good morning. very happy thursday to you. another day, another record this time the s&p 500 in the nasdaq. broadcom says it is going to split its stock ten for one. you can see how expensive it is. splitting the stock makes it less expensive. you remember nvidia did that the other day. now this is a strange symbol for a company called broadcom. they picked it up when they merged with avago. big day for tesla. the company has its shareholder

going to get pretty warm through wine country, low 80s. so bring a hat and some sunscreen. 60s to submit, 70s bay shore and we'll do some low 80s through the santa cruz mountains as well. good morning to you. looking ahead into our long range forecast, i've mentioned we're looking at a change in the weather pattern here, and it's because of this trough that's bringing in from the gulf of alaska some rain to the pacific northwest and where this sets up and how we kind of split it in half here down the middle, the axis there is going to determine where some of the faster wind speeds go into. what about what would be about sunday into early next week? i don't think any rain will be associated with this, but of course, when we talk winds at this point in the season, it brings up those fire concerns. so make sure that you're creating that defensible space, preparing yourself. as we go deeper into the season. and i see this continuing into monday as well. those contours there on our map, we stabilize a little bit as we go on deeper into next week. san francisco overall in the next couple of days, 60s to
6:22 am
some low 70s. we've got the wind there for sunday, father's day, maybe adjust those plans, those outdoor barbecues with dad and our inland valley. sunny skies 80. nothing to write home about. no major heat wave. but of course, we're watching the wind into early into the second half of the weekend. now, mike, the alert continues in livermore. it does, and the build continues, obviously, of course, because this is a major commute avenue here. westbound 580. so between north livermore avenue and isabel, those are the two major on ramps or exits. the on ramps i'm hearing are being shut down by hopefully livermore pd. if not chp westbound 580. there is the fast track lane open and i sometimes in these situations, many times in these situations they'll allow non fast track drivers to take that one lane. that might be why traffic starts to move a little bit better past the scene, at least at all past the scene. and look at this drive time. now at the bottom of the screen we're talking about 86 minutes. so it's really jumped up over the last few minutes. but we do still have the traffic seeming to flow between grant line road through
6:23 am
the scene of that crash, and then on to the dublin interchange. but look at that. almost an hour and a half. and that's only about less than 20 miles for that stretch. back to you. thanks, mike. it is 622 right now. talk about pandemonium, anticipation growing with bears set to arrive at two of the nation's zoos. but have you ever wondered about their journey from china? coming up, an exclusive look at the sanctuary, making it all possible

well, meantime, a politician in england making a startling promise. it's very unique, he says. if he's elected to parliament, he will let ai decide every vote and every policy decision. scott mcgrew you talked to steve endicott. so interesting. you say the whole thing reminds you a bit of max headroom. max headroom. yeah, i mean, i know only a certain portion of our viewers are going to know who max headroom is, but yes, steve endicott is fully computerizing his campaign starting with his virtual version of himself. he calls i steve. you can interact with ai steve right now on the campaign website, but the real steve anticipates a day where his avatar can answer questions on television, attend press conferences, you name it. so here they are side by side. i steve and well, steve. steve. now you're going to hear from real steve in a second. the only thing the ai cannot do is walk into the uk house of commons and vote yay or nay. so if he's elected, the real steve will do that part. and yes, he's going
6:36 am
to let the ai tell him how to vote. now, this is maybe not as crazy as it first sounds. the ai has been talking to constituents all over steve's district in the beach town of brighton, asking voters what they want from government, what makes them happy, what troubles they have. so the idea is the ai will make the right decisions for the people it represents, because it knows them so well. it's not my opinion that counts, it's the people's opinion that counts. and i'll just implement what they tell me to implement, which is not crazy. i mean, that's just representative democracy. crazy. no politician in the world does it. they get elected and they go off and do what they like. well, you're supposed to do what your constituents want. most politicians only do what constituents want. every four years. when it comes down to election, i know that's cynical, but i'm connecting to the constituents on the day to day basis, and i will do what they want me to do on a day to day basis. now as you might imagine, steve and i, steve, have gotten a lot of attention, which is

great for a campaign. he says. not everybody gets it, especially if they haven't tried talking to the virtual politician. they're more likely to compare it to scary science fiction. so from the people having gone to the website, haven't looked at what we're doing. all we get is skynet chucked at us and black mirror. yeah, which is fine. all good. all publicity is good publicity, but ideally, once they react, they should also take the effort to go and have a look at what we're doing. when they do, it's over. how many? positive. because the ethos of what we're trying to do, nobody can argue with democratization. talking to your constituents. listen to your voters on a day by day basis. who can argue with that? doing what they want? imagine that. so the election is july 4th. apparently they don't take july 4th off in, steve endicott is running for a seat that was held by a green party member that person retired. he says his politics don't matter because he's going to do what the constituents want. guided by ai. right. which is really i mean,
6:38 am
it's a novel approach as well. there could be a flaw in it, though, if he's going to make every vote based on that. couldn't someone just game the system? absolutely so he's he's appointed a council of people he calls validators to go through there and make sure there's nothing nutty in there like let's attack france or something that the ai would then absorb. oftentimes when you deal with ai, there are data washers that, you know, throw out the really crazy stuff, but when you think about it, that kind of special interest, you know, trying to influence the system that happens all the time in america, mostly with money, right? yeah, yeah, with no validators. no validators. right. exactly all right. thank you. scott. you bet. new at six. waymo is recalling hundreds of driverless taxis in the wake of a recent accident in arizona. last month, one of its cars crashed into a telephone pole. no one was inside the vehicle, and no bystanders were injured. the company is now, however, recalling its software and issuing an update for its entire fleet of 672 cars. it includes
