today is thursday june 13th, 2024, and breaking news. restriction rejected. the supreme court rejected a ruling to restrict the abortion pill. and the largest protestant nomination voted to block fertility and what it means nationwide. and crews are fighting intense heat as they scramble to fight a wildfire, and at the same time florida is being pounded with record rain and flooding. we are tracking both threats. and teacher aids, and parents are hearing about the risks and the dangers of artificial intelligence, but wait until you hear how it is helping kids inside of the classroom. >> yes. and we will get to that, but we are starting with one of the

ruling out of the supreme court, and the justices voted to uphold the access to the abortion pill mifepristone. >> it was a challenge brought to the justices by organizations of anti-abortion and doctors to reverse the long-standing approval from the food and drug administration. justice brett kavanaugh wrote a plaintiff's desire to make a drug less available for others does not establish standing to sue. >> the ruling is coming two years after roe v. wade was overturned which led to a wave of new restrictions across the country. joining us is yamiche alcindor, and danny cevallos, and what more does this ruling say? >> well, for now, mifepristone, this abortion medication that is used across the country, and going up gains roe v. wade was

overturned, the pill is as remains. and if you are a woman watching, it means that the pill mifepristone is obtainable through mail, and you can take it within ten weeks of pregnancy, and other people like a physician can administer this pill. i wanted to read this from brett kavanaugh, the fda has not looked to cause injury, and therefore it is not a correct form of the supreme court to file the action. and so this is a moot case. >> and so, danny, the people who brought the suit did not have legal standing to sue, and there a group of people who could bring it back to the court? >> that is the question that

high school. san jose police told us that their special operations unit was serving a search warrant when the suspect barricaded themselves and refused to come out. that suspect was believed to be armed. so right now, we know that tactical negotiators were successful in getting that suspect to surrender peacefully. as you can see from nbc bay area sky ranger, that person was taken into custody. now, in addition to san jose police officers, we also saw atf and santa clara county district attorney's office investigators and quite a number of fire trucks out here, as well. this, again, is happening on the other side of the fence from andrew hill p hill high school. so employees told us that they were a little concerned and knowing that the fire trucks were out here because they didn't know if there was an explosive type of situation. so now this is all over. we don't know what kind of search warrant that the special operations unit was serving, but we now know the suspect is in custody. we will bring you details as they develop on nbcbayarea.com. thanks, chris.

we're also learning new details about a jewelry store robbery. we can tell you now that five suspects are behind bars. yesterday police responded to a robbery at png jewelers in sunnyvale. around 130 in the afternoon. they said about 20 robbers used hammers to break jewelry display cases. all the suspects fled in several different cars, but officers pursued two different vehicles on highway 101 and during the pursuit, one of them, the suspects, discarded stolen jewelry from the moving vehicle. police say they eventually located one car, arrested five people after they tried to run away. investigators are now trying to determine if this robbery is linked to another robbery of a separate sunnyvale jewelry store last month. also, an investigation underway into another apparent smash-and-grab burglary at a high end specialty store. this happened at four this morning in san leandro at the gourmet cellar on washington ave. there's video. a car barreled through the store front and then scattered merchandise everywhere. you can see the mess

gershkovich is going to stand trial after russians accused him of gathering secret information about a russian facility. the u.s. government denies those claims. there is no word on when the trial is expected to begin. there is outrage in new york city after a string of anti-semitic attacks. the police say that red paint was splashed on the home of a jewish museum director wednesday morning. the vandals are pro palestinian protesters also displayed a banner, and the pro palestinian protesters have been accused of defacing other buildings and train cars throughout the city. the mayor and governor have condemned the incident. talk about a rough day, pickese puppy was trapped in a

her home was decimated. we are joined by annett gordon reed who is a historian from harvard law where she is a professor. and so, juneteenth is a time to recognize emancipation and freedom, and you write that slaves had to be aware of retribution. >> yes, and there were instances where people were whipped for celebrating, and even much worse than that. >> i mean, it is not lost on me, and i'll confess, that i am the daughter of immigrants and product of public school, and did not know much about juneteenth until recently, and when it came to the national consciousness and how should i

engage in the day? >> it is akin to july 4th, and time for the members of the family to come together and i have always wanted and good time for people to take the family histories, and talk about the situation, and a day for togetherness, and something to commemorate that important to happen. >> and we saw opal lee get the presidential medal of freedom, and you were there. >> yes, i was. >> and it is not lost that some of the people are alive who experienced what we talk about in the history books. and even your family in texas. >> yes, it is. and my families were brought over from the deep south, and we lived through jim crow, and i integrated the schools in my hometown, and this is recent history. >> and recent history, but right now a contentious history. >> well, you have to face the truth. you can't run from things that happened, and it tells us where we are today, and where we need

in today's mental health check, a new survey is showing that younger workers and talk about people between 18 and 25 are feeling lonely and undervalued in the workplace. >> the surveyconducted by the american psychological organization and they are more likely to feel tense or stressed out in workday. and joining us is dr. james stoli at the american psychological organization. and jump in there, and more than half of the workers say they feel lonely when they are at work, and briefly, why are so many young people struggling to connect with the colleagues at work? >> right. there are at least a couple of factors that are probably at work here.

one is what psychologister and one is that we judge ourselves compared to the people who are around throughout the day. when you are a young people new to the career or new to the work world, no way that you will have the depth working one-on-one. and also, there is psychological safety where young people feel comfortable stepping up one-on-one. >> and what can americans do to help? >> well, it is so important to not only value what younger workers bring to the workplace,

but to celebrate that, and let them know that they are being valued, and part of the process can be intentionally building teams who have younger workers, and older workers, and where they get past some things where they say so-and-so is a millennial, and you know what that means. those comments are not helpful. >> and that is true, and also, some people are more comfortable working with people their own age, and so, talk to us challenge briefly about a multi generational workforce. >> absolutely. what we are seeing here is a lack of the sense of safety, and it seems that the younger workers are feeling the most safe at expressing themselves, and feeling like other worker os who are and everybody's opinion

(♪♪) california bill that could ban teachers from outing students to their parents is one step closer to becoming law. we just learned it passed the state senate in a post on x by california state senator scott wiener. it's called assembly bill 1995. it was introduced by democratic assemblyman chris ward. authors of the bill say they're trying to protect the privacy and safety of lgbtq plus students. the legislation would prohibit schools in california from notifying parents if their student has come out at school or started to identify as transgender. this morning, the california family council held a news conference to express their

opposition to this bill. they say it's morally and legally wrong. i accidentally got that opportunity because my daughter took on her trans identity during covid, and so i could hear the teachers calling her by a different name. i could hear them using different pronouns. i removed her from the school, and not surprisingly, once i did that and once i got her the mental health that she needed, she no longer identified as being transgender. she celebrates her female body. opponents have promised to sue if this bill becomes law and have ruled it unconstitutional. could san francisco's biggest mall be making a comeback? you probably remember the wave of store closures at the san francisco center. now known as the emporium, that includes major retailers like nordstrom, sephora, adidas. but there are still signs of life there, and

the mall has now signed leases with seven new tenants. two of the new tenants are not retailers and have instead leased office space inside that mall. and a couple of other new stores include a vintage store and a japanese goods store. city leaders say the shopping center is transitioning into a destination for small businesses. the mall says it hopes the new tenants will bring in more foot traffic. our warm, sunny weather is staying through the weekend and into father's day. cinthia pimentel has our forecast. how about we fast forward and go to friday and the weekend? alameda county fair low 80s for friday and saturday. wear plenty of sunscreen. drink water by sunday, a bit of a cooler, change mid to upper 70s there in the east bay and the tri-valley and notice this in san francisco we're going to see stable temperatures in the 70s. but our models are painting a change in the wind pattern for father's day. so maybe start adjusting those plans now. if you do want to take dad to the coast, our inland valleys will do low 80s to kick start our
