♪ to watch your back the next time you get some cash. tonight. police in antioch say thieves are targeting people as they leave the bank or the atm. as police investigate these alarming robberies. one victim is speaking out tonight about a scary encounter he and his wife had with the robbers, who followed them home and attacked them. nbc bay area's pete serratos has the story. a number of banks in antioch are turning into hot spots for robberies, and it's now concerning to customers. i go to this bank all the time, so it's like, whoa, you kind of you kind of had to worry about yourself. like you take out money, you know, you got to look around your shoulder. i feel sorry for a lot of people who are getting

robbed. it can happen to me just as easy it is to them. antioch police are warning about a dozen or so incidents involving people leaving banks, then being robbed, all in just the past few months. one of those incidents involves 80 year old jim nowak. on may 22nd. he went on a routine trip with his wife to the chase bank on somerville road. she cashed the check. they put it in the envelope for her and he got in the car and drove home. but when they pulled into their driveway, a group of suspects followed them home from the bank and parked across the street where they could not see them. and as his wife got out of the car, the suspects approached the vehicle. the two of them jumped out and one of them, my wife, was in the garage getting ready to go in the house and they grabbed her purse off her neck and then turned their attention to jim, just laying back to get out of the car. they got hit me for something and i ended up in the street. so far, police have made two arrests in these cases. we reached out to antioch pd but have yet to hear back. but police are warning residents to stay vigilant and

take precautions when going to and from the bank. for jim, he's still recovering from injuries to his ribs and the incident is forcing him to be more aware of his surroundings. now we're more aware of everything that's going on. i mean, there's no more relaxed, you know? now it's like, let's look and see what's going first. then we do something in antioch. pete serratos, nbc, bay area news. we do have new details tonight on a high end heist, we've learned that the mob that ransacked a jewelry store in sunnyvale got away with more than $1 million worth of merchandise. the entire crime took just about two minutes. happened on wednesday at a png jewelers in sunnyvale. you could see 20 people rushed into that store, smashed up cases, took everything they could grab. five people have been arrested and charged so far. sunnyvale police are now asking for any tips to help them catch the others. we did talk with an expert about what can be done to stop this crime wave. i would encourage retailers to put imitation jewelry, watches,

diamonds in these display cases, purses and when people want to see them, they pull them out individually. this is literally a where a critical mass for retail in california. the investigators also want to know if this robbery is tied to the robbery of another sunnyvale jewelry store just last month. well what led up to it tonight? there is shock, sadness and a lot of questions after someone shot and killed a security guard at a cvs drugstore in fremont, the store at the fremont hub on mallory avenue is now temporarily closed. nbc bay area's jocelyn moran joins us in studio tonight. jocelyn, what do we know at this point? yeah, audrey, tonight we are learning more about what happened. police say witnesses tell them the guard and another person got into some kind of verbal back and forth that quickly turned violent and deadly. the guard was shot and killed. and tonight, customers are trying to understand how something like this could have happened there tonight. candles and flowers left for a well known security

guard shot and killed at this cvs at the fremont hub. dudes just coming to work and, you know, next day, you know he's gone. fremont police received reports of the shooting at around 11 thursday night. there is a security guard that's down. and according to witnesses, the security guard and another person got into a verbal fight. it eventually turned violent. the guard was shot and died on the scene. the other person suffered several stab wounds. the injury is going to be a knife wound to the neck. it's an arterial bleed, trauma at cotheridge. that person was transported to the hospital tonight. customers tell me they don't know which guard died. they say the ones they've interacted with on a regular basis are always nice. john munoz was at this cvs just hours before the shooting happened. i know the two security guards i work here. i've been seeing them frequently. they're pretty good guys. it's unfortunate, you know, like every time i walked in, i never had a problem with him. i always talked to the security guards or the staff here. and i've been very friendly with them for many years. and, i was just shocked

to hear that something like this happened here. in a statement, cvs says in part, quote, we are cooperating with police in their investigation of the tragic incident that occurred at our store on fremont hub last night. we are providing store employees counseling services tonight. there's a sign on the door notifying customers they are temporarily closed and those who knew the victim are showing up to pay tribute. i don't have a way to reach the family or anything, but it it just felt like a good thing to do, to say goodbye to someone who's always tried to protect the, you know, the security of this community here. and police, nor the coroner's office have released the name of the guard, but anyone who may have seen or has any information is asked to contact fremont police. audrey and jocelyn, thank you. first lady jill biden arrived in arizona tonight after a stop in the bay area earlier today. doctor biden attended a fundraiser for her husband's reelection campaign in los gatos was hosted by philanthropist shannon hunt. scott doctor biden traveled to reno for another fundraiser before ending the

night in arizona. all right. from protests to pomp and circumstance, stanford is holding its main commencement on sunday. this comes nearly a week after protesters occupied the university president's office. so here's what you need to know if you are planning to attend. only eligible graduates can request tickets for their friends and family. anyone over 16 will have to show id and all items will be subject to search. some seniors won't be walking the stage after this protest. 13 people were arrested, you might remember for occupying the stanford president's office. they also spray sprayed graffiti on building ten and the quad university also disbanded the pro-palestinian encampment that had been on the campus for months now. university said it was threatening community safety, although the students there said that that protest remained peaceful. and tonight, the chp is looking for witnesses to a deadly crash. the victim was a person riding an electric

scooter on the freeway. this happened in the northbound lanes of 87 at the taylor street exit in san jose at around 3:00 this morning. the victim did die at the scene. the driver who hit the person riding that scooter did stay at the scene. chp is asking anyone who might have witnessed the crash to call police. they're also investigating why someone on an electric scooter was on the freeway in the first place. there is concerning concord. police have been getting calls about something happening at the concord naval weapons station, but they say not to worry. it is just a drill. police say the loudspeaker announcements that people are hearing are part of an army exercise. people might also see more uniformed service members in that area. right now, concord police say that there's no need to call 911. they are aware of what's going on there. the exercise started on june 10th and continues through the 18th. i new at 11. we hear a lot about catalytic converter thefts, right. but now another

crime trend has come to berkeley. thieves are stealing airbags. berkeley police say it happened four times in just one night this week. one victim shared these photos with us. you can see the smashed window airbag taken from the steering wheel. police say airbags are easy to remove and they're portable as well. unethical repair shops will take those stolen airbags and install them in customers cars, charging full price as if they were new. a new one can cost about $1,000. it's really unfortunate because, you know, i mean, i work hard, you know, and to come out and see my car broken in just for an airbag. so i got to pay, you know, a few thousand dollars and police tell us that honda civics and accords seem to be most frequently targeted. well, preparations are underway for downtown san jose's first ever daytime rave. this is a live

look at discovery meadow park tonight, where crews have been hard at work building the stage for tomorrow's latin house music festival. raves are known, of course, for their loud electronic music, pulsing lights , but there's a growing trend of holding them during the day in open spaces. festivities kick off at 2 p.m. tomorrow. they're going to wrap up at around 9 p.m, and thousands are expected to show up there. bart silicon valley extension project is officially underway. vta shared this video with us of its groundbreaking ceremony to kick off phase two of bart's extension into the south bay. it is the largest transportation infrastructure project in the history of santa clara county, and the project includes a five mile subway that will eventually bring bart from the berryessa station in north san jose through downtown san jose and into santa clara in san francisco. a new pilot program is being launched for curbside electric vehicle charging, so

the idea is to help meet climate goals and make it more convenient for residents and visitors looking to charge their evs. under this program, companies that make ev chargers can now apply online to install a pilot curbside electric vehicle. charger city currently has about 1000 public ev charging stations. last year, plug in hybrids and evs actually made up about 37% of all new car sales in the city. we're back in just 60s, just ahead. see right here? two big cats caught on camera. what these mountain lions were spotted doing that has a wine country neighborhood on alert tonight. plus, it's called a dutch roll. and it's nerve racking. and it's unusual as well. midair jolts on a southwest flight heading to the bay area which prompted a federal investigation. i'm chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. not much in the way of fog in san francisco, but i am tracking some wind and high fire danger

is about those those mountain lions right there. two sightings in a napa. neighborhood has a lot of people on alert. tonight, one of the mountain lions was spotted in the middle of the day. nbc bay area's jody hernandez has this story. this is the video that has grabbed

the attention of folks in the gordon valley neighborhood of napa county. two two mighty mountain lions taking a midday stroll just after 3:00 yesterday afternoon. they look like they belong in the zoo. they're big. the man who's surveillance video captured the big cats tells nbc bay area they had just attacked a deer before sauntering away. it's scary with the kids out and we have animals. and yeah, it's just scary to think that they're this close. sharon diaz says she worries for her two young grandchildren. she's keeping a close eye on sadie and carter, who've been instructed not to run if they see one, and to make a lot of noise. i was like, yeah. neighbors say it's the second sighting on their street. in recent weeks, surveillance cameras also captured a cat in the middle of the night. walked right. we could see it disappear right here. went right to our house where it went. we don't know. while the cougar appeared

to walk toward his home, sergio rogoff says he's never seen one in person. and he hopes he never does. now we've seen them on video, so we know they're always around. over the last few weeks, folks in san jose have also experienced some close encounters with big cats. five separate sightings have been reported. there the mountain lions have always been here. the bay area is surrounded by suitable mountain lion habitat. the department of fish and wildlife says the increase in sightings may simply be a result of more surveillance cameras, but they say if you see one, don't turn your back or run. instead, maintain eye contact and make yourself seem big. don't crouch down, don't bend over. try to make be loud. make noises. get big, try to you want to try to get scare the mountain lion off. it's scary. yeah, because you don't know what they're going after. you know how close they are to your house in napa county. jodi hernandez, nbc, bay area news. be very

careful. jodi mentioned the growing number of south bay mountain lions sightings, and this map shows where they all were. so take a look here. if this is the same animal, you could tell here it's headed south on may 29th. people in the milpitas neighborhood reported seeing a mountain lion. the next day, another sighting near oakland road and murphy avenue in san jose. may 31st. one was prowling near 24th and santa clara streets, and a few days later, on june 5th, someone spotted a big cat much further south in south san jose. and then june 6th went up a little bit. another sighting near kelly park. a federal investigation is underway tonight following an unusual incident on a southwest airlines flight from phoenix to oakland. investigators say the boeing 737 max experienced a rare phenomenon known as a dutch roll. this happened back on may 25th. this is an example of what a dutch roll looks like. you can see the plane's wings. they tilt up and down on either side, while the nose and tail wobble left to right. substantial

internal damage was caused to this plane. we're told. some scary moments as well. for the 175 passengers and six crew members on board. the faa and ntsb are now investigating the cause. retired pilot doug rice tells us this is very uncommon. this is a very infrequent, occurrence, this is the first one i've heard of in the seven, 37 and probably 20 years. so this would be an isolated incident. the standby power control unit, which was the offender in this case, should not have been powered. and that will be part of the investigation is to why it actuated the rudder and how it turned itself on. thankfully, no one was hurt in that incident. an outpouring of support for an east bay business hit hard by thieves. a break in last wednesday left nowheres ville tattoo with a $4,000 damages and stolen tools. but less than a day later, a friend of the east

oakland shop set up a gofundme page to help pay for those repairs, and it surpassed its goal within days. shop's owner says the support is over whelming. the fear is that you're done. you know, i think i had $200 in my bank account at that point, so yes, they get a little teary eyed on that. i felt the love, you know, you when you're having tough times, you question what you're doing. sometimes and when everyone around you pitches in, you know you're doing the right thing and he's not the only business owner seeing support. last month, people donated more than $17,000 to alamar dominican kitchen on grand avenue after a break in, put them at risk of closing. okay. will it be figure skating or super mario? the international olympic committee wants to get into gaming in a different way. the ioc says it's been testing esports. it will take meetings in paris to talk

that hottest air away. the only problem here is we are going to get into a little bit of on and off wind in the bay area and there's now also been a fire weather watch that's been issued here for the central valley, sacramento to redding. it's now also includes lake county. let me get you more details on this red flag fire warning and also those temperatures to get you ready for that weekend. and you'll see it's right here once again over lake county, including lakeport, kelso ville, clear lake, all the way down to middletown. this begins 11 p.m. tomorrow until 5 a.m. on monday. we're looking at on and off wind gusts here 15 to 40mph. also some low humidity, 10 to 20. certainly in the mountains. that will be the top risk. but really everybody just watch out this weekend. you see anything suspicious or you happen to see smoke for whatever reason. just make sure to get on the emergency calls and get that taken care of so firefighters can get that out again. hopefully we don't have any fires, but we will have certainly some warm and dry winds when it comes to the

a van lord. people are renting out rvs across the bay area in san francisco. it's hard not to notice the rvs parked in the dogpatch bayview outer sunset, and soma. a lot of people are renting those rvs, of course, because it is cheaper than an apartment. we did speak with a man who's been living out of his rv for about a year and a half, and he told us about a friend who opted to pay rent to an rv owner or a landlord to stay off the streets. how much do you think he's paying? 3 to 400 bucks. sometimes renting an rv in the city can be as much as $2,000 a month. most people opt

to split that cost with roommates. numbers from this year's homeless count found that about 1400 people are living in vehicles in the city. look at this group of brown pelicans back in the wild. after weeks of rehabilitation, the international bird rescue released 27 birds in sausalito, near the golden gate bridge. today, a group of pelicans are among the 100 that have been returned to the wild. rescuers say the birds were starving, disoriented when they were found last month, but they believe they're finally ready to survive on their own. about 120 pelicans are still in rehab. it is a lifeline for the food bank. the san jose sharks donated $56,000 to second harvest of silicon valley after seeing our report. so last week we did tell you that the food bank needs to leave its biggest storage warehouse in san jose because of a looming rent hike that will make it harder to store and distribute food. so today, the sharks foundation announced

meantime, warriors guard klay thompson doesn't appear to be happy with the team right now. late today, word spread that thompson unfollowed the warriors on instagram and deleted much of the warriors content on his account. 34 year old thompson has been with the team for 11 seasons and is now a free agent. okay, moving on to baseball now, the giants were trailing the angels 8 to 3 in the bottom of the eighth when heliot ramos smashed. see right there a long three run homer to center field. unfortunately that was as close as the giants came. they lost 8 to 6. switching to the a's. one big highlight for the oakland for oakland was a first inning grand slam home run by catcher shea langeliers. sadly, they do end up losing to the minnesota twins in minneapolis, 6 to 5. a's have now lost seven
