turning into hot spots for robberies, and it's now concerning to customers. i go to this bank all the time, so it's like, whoa, you kind of you kind of had to worry about yourself. like you take out money, you know, you got to look around your shoulder. i feel sorry for a lot of people who are getting robbed. it can happen to me just as easy. it is to them. antioch police are warning about a dozen or so incidents involving people leaving banks, then being robbed, all in just the past few months. one of those incidents involves 80 year old jim nowak. on may 22nd, he went on a routine trip with his wife to the chase bank on somerville road. she cashed the check. they put it in the envelope for her and he got in the car and drove home. but when they pulled into their driveway, a group of suspects followed them home from the bank and parked across the street where they could not see them. and as his wife got out of the car, the suspects approached the vehicle. the two of them jumped out and one of them, my wife, was in the garage getting ready to go in the house, and they grabbed her purse off her neck and then turned their

attention to jim, just laying back to get out of the car. they got hit me for something and i ended up in the street. so far, police have made two arrests in these cases. we reached out to antioch pd but have yet to hear back. but police are warning residents to stay vigilant and take precautions when going to and from the bank. for jim, he's still recovering from injuries to his ribs and the incident is forcing him to be more aware of his surroundings. now we're more aware of everything that's going on. i mean, there's no more relaxed, you know? now it's like, let's look and see what's going first. then we do something. pete serratos today in the bay this morning there is lingering shock and sadness in fremont, where a busy cvs remains temporarily closed after a security guard was shot and killed while on the job. there is a security guard that's down. it all happened at the cvs at the fremont hub outdoor shopping center. police say it all started thursday night as a verbal confrontation between the
7:06 am
guard and another man. while the guard died there at the scene, police say the other man went to the hospital with several stab wounds. one customer we spoke with had been at the store just before the deadly altercation. know the two security guards i work here, i've been seeing them frequently. they're pretty good guys. it's unfortunate, you know, like, every time i walked in, i never had a problem with him there is a growing memorial outside of the store as police continue to investigate. the name of that guard has not yet been released. in a statement, cvs says in part, quote, we are cooperating with police in their investigation of the tragic incident that occurred at our store on fremont hub. we are providing store employees counseling services. anyone who may have seen or has any information is asked to contact fremont police. an the new developments are emerging following a high end heist at a bay area jewelry store. we have

video of the mob of 20 people ransacking png jewelers in sunnyvale, and we've since learned that they got away with more than $1 million worth of merchandise. the entire crime took just about two minutes. on wednesday, you can see that mob rushing in and smashing all the cases and taking everything they could grab. so far, police have five people under arrest and charged. sunnyvale police are now asking for any tips to help them catch the others as we've seen violent burglaries at bay area jewelers, one expert has a safety suggestion going forward, i would encourage retailers to put imitation jewelry, watches, diamonds in these display cases, purses, and when people want to see them, they pull them out individually. see, this is literally, where a critical mass for retail in california investing. gators also want to know if this crime is tied to the robbery of another sunnyvale

jewelry store just last month. and now to san francisco, where a park in visitacion valley now bears a new name that many hope will bring healing and unity. after becoming a place of tragedy for at least one bay area family and their friends. the park, now named after the woman affectionately known as grandma huang, who was beaten and left unconscious in the park back in 2019. she died one year later. a renaming ceremony will be held to honor grandma huang later this morning. her granddaughter is sitting down with us to reflect on this special moment. gia vang has the story you'll only see on nbc bay area it's painful to be in this spot. this is where she was laying face up black and blue. susana yee's visits to the neighborhood park are filled with emotion. when i come here, i acknowledge that spot huang
7:09 am
peace and friendship park was where her grandmother was attacked. i talked to her sometimes just asking what was she like to see at the park. yee now wants to make it a place to bring community together. located off leland avenue in visitacion valley, grandma huang lived next to the park. she exercised here every morning. she'll bittersweet about it because there's a constant reminder that the park renaming is because of, a tragedy. and, you know, my grandmother isn't here with us, and i find myself going there when i need to clear my head, yee remembers her grandma as resilient and robust. her name in cantonese means abundant love and i feel that that's that's her. until the tragic turn after grandma huang's death. yee's grief eventually powered her activism. this journey has definitely
7:10 am
humbled me. so many cultures and people and ways of connecting that i didn't know existed. i didn't want this, of course, but the work itself transformed me. part of that transformation came when yee met the late ronald colthurst, a beloved community member in visitacion valley. he had a meaningful idea. why don't we rename this park after your grandmother and really cement this idea of peace and friendship? we were modeling black and asian solidarity, and i think about him and grandmother, their spirits enjoying the park together and watching over us. i really would like this park to be infused with with a sense of community and for people to, to want to, to see themselves, to belong in this space. that's what the park is about, you know, because my grandmother lived across the street, there are asian american immigrant, low income people
7:11 am
like my grandmother, who can be acknowledged. she was here creating community, contributing to the fabric of life here. and it's nice to have a model of remembrance of such a person. gia vang today in the bay. now to concord, where people living there are on alert and notifying police of their concerns. the department says it's been getting a lot of calls about something happening at the concord naval weapons station. but not to worry, they say it's just a drill. police say the loudspeaker announcements that people are hearing are part of an army exercise. police might also see more people, rather might see more uniformed service members in the area. right around now, concord police remind there's no need to call 911. they are aware of what's going on. the exercise started on monday and continues through this tuesday and preparations

are underway for downtown san jose's first ever daytime rave. this is a live look outside over discovery meadow park this morning. that's where crews have been hard at work, building the stage for today's latin house music festival. raves, as you might know, are known for their loud music and pulsing lights, but there's a growing trend of holding them during the day in open spaces. festivities kick off today at two. this afternoon, and we'll wrap up around nine tonight. thousands are expected to attend. 712 on your saturday morning. we have much more ahead on today in the bay. coming up, a sure sign that the paris olympics are inching even closer. the trials for the 2024 summer games get underway in just a few hours. today, so many sports will be taking the spotlight, including wrestling coming up on today in the bay, a

two minutes, but first, we are just 41 days away from the 2024 paris olympics. they're getting underway right here on nbc bay area and ahead of the competition, we're taking a look at some of the sports that to hit the world stage. nbc news tommy mcfly is getting into the olympic spirit, trying his hand at wrestling from a gold medalist in the sport. and as you can see by this report, let's just say it's harder than it looks. it takes him down. that's two. i learned this starfish. nice, nice. the whole idea is to not get on your back. and more important tactics for how you freestyle wrestle from coach monday, an olympic gold medalist kenneth monday's gold medal made history in 88. in seoul, beat the soviet union. i mean, forget rocky like this guy. talk about american hero making history. you know, making history. now at morgan state in
7:17 am
baltimore, coach monday dropped some knowledge. typically the guy that's on top is the guy that's winning. there you go. pan is if you hold him on his back for two seconds, the match is over. so exposing is hitting your back back to the floor. exactly, exactly. and in 92, i pinned the guy in semifinals. i pinned the guy to make the finals. it's a long flight home for that guy. some of the techniques are designed to kind of score a lot of points real fast. you'll see like the ankle lace and that moment, you know you're in trouble when that's happening. yeah, yeah. then he's just gonna roll him through. and you rolling rolling rolling. you know two points two points two points two points. boom boom boom boom five five turns and your match is over. you know, so it happens. you'll see it. sometimes matches are scored on points with two three minute rounds. assistant coach alonzo and freshman aaron turner broke it down. and so coach allen's going on to his stomach. so that's actually less points if you're on your stomach. well he just he's going on because he don't want to get pinned. coach allen's going to hit a card. we call it a lateral drop. he throws it right to his back
7:18 am
okay. so that's a four point throw. he takes him down. he doesn't get it. he doesn't. he can't turn him. he's trying to he's fighting. he fights. he doesn't turn him. referee will stop. get up. he didn't turn him. they'll put him back. back back to the center. and they start him again. now, knowing that you are a gold medalist in freestyle, as i'm asking this question, is freestyle harder than greco-roman? i think freestyle is harder than greco-roman because you got to defend every you got to defend your whole body. yeah you got legs. you think about body, greco. you just got to defend from your waist up. so you want to get in and try and take down. i mean, look at the time. get in and see. see if you can. tommy watches it. let's do it. all right. ready? wait. no no. where do i stand? yeah, you're standing right there. okay whoa! that's two. get off your back. get off your back! turn turn, turn! oh, oh! he's back! oh, oh! no! pin! no pin yet. oh matsui.
7:19 am
all right, that's ten. watch the olympics on nbc. now, we got ourselves a grip on how wrestling works and how hard it actually is. thanks, coach. tommy mcfly, nbc news. better tommy than me oatat. lots of u.s. olympic team trials are seto ppen over the next two weeks. and starting tonight, it nbc bay area with the swimming trials from indianapolis. you can keep up with all the trials right here and watch live on peacock and you can watch the opening ceremony right here on nbc bay area on july 26th. you can also find profiles on all of our local athletes at nbc bay area.com/olympics. time now to check in with cinthia pimentel

7:21 am
middletown, clear lake, up into lakeport, and to the east for the sacramento valley. that's where this red flag warning is in place. really gusty winds coming off of the land, low humidity levels and a little bit of recovery in the overnight hours. so that top risk in the mountains there. and we can see it through parts of the bay area as well, and through parts of fairfield, napa and into parts of the east bay and the south bay. morgan hill, 19% humidity. so it's dry out there. what was a once a really wet winter has now turned into a really dry summer, so be vigilant out there. hour by hour wind gusts for you planning this saturday around the bay. gusty through novato, around 30 miles an hour. bodega bay, the coasts are really gusty as we go on and fast forward. this timestamp to give everybody a bit of a wider view through san francisco, the peninsula out towards the delta and in the livermore pass altamont pass area. we have to watch out for and down into the south bay. it will also be breezy today. tomorrow and possibly on into monday, so we
7:22 am
really have to remain on high alert here as we make those father's day weekend plans. now, as far as our temperatures go, nothing too exciting mid 80s for santa rosa, concord, livermore, low 80s. we'll do 60s and 70s 75 bayshore there in hayward to some 81 degrees in los gatos again for father's day. not much change, but we will be under that red flag warning just to the north of the bay area over the next couple of days in san francisco, temperatures stay in the upper 60s. some low 70s carry us through the beginning of the workweek here and into next week. the winds will subside a little bit. we'll go into juneteenth on wednesday, officially starting summer on thursday, and a bit of a gradual warm up notice here in our inland valleys, we'll go from windy conditions to some more tranquil summer like weather. yeah, i could not stand the wind, i just cannot. i know, fingers crossed taking it to the mat. yeah, you're going to keep going with that one. can't wait to see where you take it. cynthia thanks. it is 22 past

incident on a southwest airlines flight from phoenix to oakland. investigators say that the boeing 737 max experienced a rare phenomenon known as a dutch roll. it happened back on may 25th. this is an example of what that dutch roll looks like. you can see the plane's wings tilt up and down on either side, while the nose and tail wobble left to right, creating kind of a eight figure substantial internal damage was caused to the plane, coupled with those frightening moments for the 175 passengers and six crew members on board. the faa and the ntsb are now investigating the cause. retired pilot doug rice tells us this is extremely uncommon. this is a very infrequent, occurrence, this is the first one i've heard of in the seven, 37 and probably 20 years. so this would be an isolated incident. the standby power control unit, which was the
7:27 am
offender in this case, should not have been powered. and that will be part of the investigation is to why it actuated the rudder and how it turned itself on. well, thankfully, no one on board the plane was hurt. 26 past the hour. right now we have much more ahead for you on today in the bay. coming up, vice president kamala harris in switzerland this morning. we have new details on all the new funding promises she's making to ukraine amid its ongoing war with russia. plus two big cats caught on camera in wine country. a now thatnd

here. locally, there is shock, sadness and a lot of questions remaining after someone shot and killed a security guard at a cvs in fremont. the store at the fremont hub on mallory avenue is now temporarily closed. today in the bay's jocelyn moran is revealing what we know so far as the investigation into what happened gets underway. candles and flowers left for a well known security guard shot and killed at this cvs at the fremont hub. dudes just coming to work and, you know, next day, you know he's gone. fremont police received reports of the shooting at around 11 thursday night. there is a security guard that's down. and according to witnesses, the security guard and another person got into a verbal fight. it eventually turned violent. the guard was shot and died on the scene. the other person suffered several stab wounds. the injury is going to be a knife wound to the neck. it's an arterial bleed. we, trauma coverage. that person was transported to the hospital tonight. customers tell me they
7:33 am
don't know which guard died. they say the ones they've interacted with on a regular basis are always nice. john munoz was at this cvs just hours before the shooting happened. i know the two security guards that work here. i've been seeing them frequently. they're pretty good guys. it's unfortunate, you know, like every time i walked in, i never had a problem with him. i always talked to the security guards or the staff here. and i've been very friendly with them for many years. and, i was just shocked to hear that something like this happened. there's a sign on the door notifying customers they are temporarily closed, and those who knew the victim are showing up to pay tribute. i don't have a way to reach the family or anything, but it it just felt like a good thing to do, to say goodbye to someone who's always tried to protect the, you know, the security of this community here. that was jocelyn moran reporting for us in a statement. cvs says in part, quote, we are cooperating with police in their investigation of the tragic incident that occurred at our store on fremont hub. we are
7:34 am
providing store employees with counseling services. anyone who may have seen or has any information is asked to contact fremont police. now now to a warning for people in and around antioch where police are reporting several incidents involving people getting robbed after they leave the bank. investigators are looking into nearly a dozen robberies connected to people leaving the bank. they say it's all happened in the last few months. one of the victims involves an 80 year old man. we spoke with him. he tells us he was on a routine trip with his wife to chase bank on somerville road. they pulled into their driveway. a group of people apparently followed them home, hid across the street, and as his wife got out of the car, the thieves approached the car, stole her purse, and then turned their attention to him and like, just lay back to get out of the car. the guy hit me for something and i ended up in the
7:35 am
street. so far, police have made just two arrests in these cases. we reached out to antioch pd for an update. we are waiting to hear back in the meantime, police are warning people to stay vigilant when you're going to and from the bank. well, we hear a lot about catalytic converter thefts. and now there's another crime trend and it's happening right now in berkeley. thieves are stealing air bags. berkeley police say it happened four times in just one night this past week. one victim shared these photos with us. you can see the window smashed, the air bag taken from the steering wheel. police say air bags are easy to remove and portable. we are told that unethical repair shops will take the stolen air bags and install them in customers cars, charging full price as if they were new. a new air bag can cost about $1,000. it's really unfortunate because, as you know, i mean, i work hard
7:36 am
, you know, and to come out and see my car broken in just for air bag. so i got to pay, you know, a few thousand dollars. police say honda civics and honda accords appear to be the most frequently targeted. now to napa county, where we know it's famous for its wine. but this morning, all the talk is about mount min lions. two sightings in one napa neighborhood has neighbors on alert. one of the mountain lions was spotted in the middle of the day on thursday. so we sent our today in the bay's jodi hernandez. there she brings us this report. this is the video that has grabbed the attention of folks in the gordon valley neighborhood of napa county. look like they belong in the zoo. they're big. the man who's surveillance video captured the big cats tells nbc bay area they had just attacked a deer before sauntering away. it's scary with the kids out, and we have animals. and yeah, it's just
7:37 am
scary to think that they're this close. sharon diaz says she worries for her two young grandchildren. she's keeping a close eye on sadie and carter, who've been instructed not to run if they see one, and to make a lot of noise. i was like, yeah. neighbors say it's the second sighting on their street. in recent weeks, surveillance cameras also captured a cat in the middle of the night. walked right. we could see it disappear right here. went right to our house where it went. we don't know. while the cougar appeared to walk toward his home, sergio rogoff says he's never seen one in person. and he hopes he never does. now we've seen them on video, so we know they're always around. over the last few weeks, folks in san jose have also experienced some close encounters with big cats. five separate sightings have been reported. there the mountain lions have always been here. the bay area is surrounded by suitable mountain lion habitat. the department of fish and wildlife says the increase in
7:38 am
sightings may simply be a result of more surveillance cameras, but they say if you see one, don't turn your back or run. instead, maintain eye contact and make yourself seem big. don't crouch down, don't bend over. try to make be loud. make noises. get big, try to you want to try to get scare the mountain lion off. it's scary. yeah, because you don't know what they're going after or you know how close they are to your house in napa county. jodi hernandez, nbc,ay area news. as you might as you may have heard there, jodi mentioned the growing number of south bay mountain lion sightings. this map shows where they were all located. take a look if this is the same animal, it's headed south. on may 29th, people in a milpitas neighborhood reported seeing a mountain lion. the next day, another sighting near oakland roadnd murphy avenue in san jose. the next day, may 31st one, was prowling near 24th and
7:39 am
santa clara streets, and then a few days later, june 5th, someone spotted a b cat farther south in south san jose. the next day, june 6th, another sighting near kelley park. in much lighter news, we are less than a month away from the 4th of july, and authorities on the peninsula are working to reduce the number of illegal fireworks. cal fire says the explosives are a growing risk when it comes to starting fires, especially with this dry and windy weather. cynthia is telling us about the san mateo county sheriff's office is hosting a series of fireworks buyback events this month, so those who turn in their fireworks will get up to $200 cash, no questions asked. the program is entering its second year. last year, san mateo county says 400 pounds of illegal fireworks and explosives were turned over. the first event kicks off this morning at the coastside fire protection district headquarters in half moon bay. the next events are

tower camera just overlooking the golden gate bridge. this just makes you want to go out there and conquer the day. as you should. we finally made it to the weekend, so what are we looking like? breezy at times, of course, that has been the headline over the last couple of days. i know some people are sick of it, but that's the pattern that we're into. we're going to go into some low 80s up there in the north bay, as well as over on into concord, a few degrees warmer, 86 low to mid 70s around the immediate bay shore in the east bay, and upper 60s in san francisco. so dry and sunny weather. but of course that comes with a grain of salt. as i mentioned, as we have this red flag warning up through parts of the north bay and into parts of the sacramento valley, including solano county, vacaville, and on into davis. this includes parts of southern lake county, up into parts of
7:44 am
lakeport and clear lake just on the edges of lake berryessa. so please be careful if you have any camping trips, any lake day trips with those wind gusts, of course, and those low humidity levels, anything that does start could travel really quickly. and this is a long stretch of time from this evening on into monday, as we take a look at those wind gusts, at times they will be coming onshore. so we're used to that sea breeze coming in through the bay area, but really gusty through san francisco, parts of the marin county coastline down into the san mateo county coastline, and at times it will be coming offshore, meaning that we have to worry about those dry winds bringing in that low moisture and increasing our fire danger there. so some tips for you as you get ready to maybe wind down this weekend. celebrate. dad, make sure that you're using those grills on the paved surface, making sure that your car, your litter isn't going anywhere. of course, with the cigarets and creating that defensible space around your home, around your campfire.
7:45 am
bringing plenty of water. making sure that we're all watching out for each other. of course, overall, the next couple of days, temperature wise, won't be too much to write home about. we'll stay in the 80s for the first half of the week, watching those wind speeds increasing tonight on into tomorrow for father's day and then into next week, we get into a bit of a calmer pattern with those winds and our temperatures actually start to warm up as we go on into summer. officially there thursday at around 150 in the afternoon, warmer on into our friday as well. san francisco breezy, gusty winds at times, making those plans to take dad, grandpa or the father figure in your life out towards the coast. so bring an extra layer for them as we go on into juneteenth in the city there on wednesday, some a few clouds rolling around but nothing too bad. temperatures in the 60s for the rest of the week. hopefully my husband isn't watching because father's day really snuck up on me this year. i can come up with something pretty fast. cynthia, thanks. 45 past the hour.

decide. every vote and every policy decision. and our scott mcgrew says candidate steve endicott, reminds him of max headroom. okay, i admit, only a certain portion of our viewers will know who max headroom is. but yeah, steve endicott is fully computerizing his campaign , starting with a virtual version of himself he calls ai steve. you can interact with ai steve, right now on the campaign website, but the real steve and dissipates a day where his avatar will answer questions on television, attend press conferences, you name it. so here they are, side by side. ai steve and you know steve. steve, you'll hear from the real steve in a second. the only thing the ai can't do, though, is walk into the us house of commons and vote yay or nay. if he's elected, the real steve will have to do that part. and yes, he's going to let the ai tell him how to vote. now, this is not quite as crazy as it sounds,

because the ai has been talking to constituent agents all over steve's districts and in the beach town of brighton, asking them what they want from government. what makes them happy, what troubles do they have? so the idea is that the ai will make the right decisions for the people it represents, because it knows them well. it's not my opinion that counts, it's the people's opinion that counts . and i'll just implement what they tell me to implement, which is not crazy. i mean, that's just representative democracy. crazy no politician in the world does it. they get elected and they go off and do what they like. well, you're supposed to do what your constituents want. most politicians only do what constituents want every four years. when it comes down to election, i know that's cynical, but i'm connecting to the constituents on the day to day basis, and i will do what they want me to do on a day to day basis. now, as you might imagine , steve and i, steve, have gotten a lot of attention and that's great for a campaign, he says. not everybody gets it, though, especially if they

haven't tried talking to his virtual politician self. it's more likely they're going to compare it to scary science fiction. so from the people having gone to the website, haven't looked at what we're doing, all we get is skynet chucked at us and black mirror. yeah, which is fine. all good. all publicity is good. publicity but ideally, once they react, they should also take the effort to go and have a look at what we're doing when they do. it's overwhelmingly positive, because the ethos of what we're trying to do, nobody can argue with democratization. talking to your constituents, listen to your voters on a day by day basis. who can argue with that? all right. what if somebody gives a silly or even dangerous answer to the ai like, i want 100% taxes, or let's attack france. much like other databases, the data is washed. it's examined by real people, a citizens panel steve calls validators, though that doesn't stop special interests from pushing their agenda on the ai. but that's
7:52 am
just like they would with a regular politician. the good news is ai doesn't care about money. the election is july 4th. that's a fair point. ai doesn't care about money. scott always making us think. thanks. 51 past the hour. up next, a quick look at the top stories we're following, including that breaking news from overseas, the princess of wales returning to the public eye for the first time following her cancer announcement, details on the royal event and what she's n saying about herow
