air and ground, hopefully we're able to contain this fire, sooner rather than later. right now, at six, a wildfire explodes in size in north bay. evacuations in place as crews are battling challenging conditions. we're live with those windy conditions on the front lines and fire from that smoke has been mainly concerned contained to the north bay, but
6:01 am
will spread across the east bay as we go into this afternoon, into the evening. so i'm tracking the air quality impact next. plus we are following some breaking news from overseas. a surprise move just announced by israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu. this is ahead of his planned address to us lawmakers. this is today in the bay area. what a sad good morning to you all. i'm marcus washington and i'm scott mcgrew. laura has the day off this morning. we'll get right to our breaking news. the wildfire burning in wine country. firefighters had their hands full overnight. yeah, not only that, but the teams are really facing some challenging conditions. we have team coverage for you, meteorologist kari hall. she's tracking those conditions. but first, today in the bay's bob redell. he's live for us in healdsburg. and bob, let's talk about this. what are you learning about this fire? because i know it's continued to burn and it's grown a little bit overnight. we got into some new numbers from cal fire. we're

hopefully we're able to contain this fire sooner rather than later. we did speak with one woman who lives near the fire. she tells us she's concerned about friends and neighbors and the dry creek area who are under evacuation, but they're staying home despite those warnings, at least for now. so again, if you were in an evacuation zone, you do want to heed those warnings just based on the fact it's a little breezy down here, we're obviously at the valley floor, but up in the hills, you can imagine it's probably a little bit more gusty. reporting live here in healdsburg, bob redell. today in the bay. all right, bob , thank you. now we are getting reports into our newsroom right now. the cal fire rescued a man near mountain view road. i want you to look at this video right here. it is dark, but you can see that man. he's being carried out by helicopter from that area. not exactly sure right now how that man was injured, but our photographer at the scene did say that possibly he was hit by a fallen branch. i want to go

to meteorologist kari hall right now because we've been talking about those conditions. i know you've been monitoring the red flag conditions and really the worsening air quality that we're seeing from all these fires. yeah. so any time you have all these fires burning, if we don't have enough wind to really mix things out, it can really affect how much of this smoke we're breathing in. and when that fire started just northwest of healdsburg, we had winds gusting 20 to 30mph. so that kind of fan, those flames. and so right now we're seeing conditions where it is much better compared to yesterday. we have a lighter wind. we have higher humidity. and it's also cooler for those firefighters who are out there working. but we are still under a wide area under this red flag warning. and we'll see these conditions continue for today with a low humidity and the high wind that may cause those fires to kind of pick up in intensity again for today, as we're taking a look at our air and smoke pollution that we are seeing, it's been mainly in the north bay but may begin to spread into the inland east bay and the

to make sure that you have a defensible space around your home, especially in those mountainous areas. you have a spot where there could be a fire break. if there is a fire that moves close to your home. also, don't throw out the cigaret litter. that really is what lights a lot of these fires roadside and don't drive on any dry grass. some of the tow chains or anything that's dragging on the ground. those sparks can also light a fire and then also use grills on paved surfaces. relative humidity is high at this morning. that tends to slow the spread of those fires that we've seen, especially in the north bay, where we have higher humidity and cooler temperatures in the morning. but the air will be drying out again today. look at clear lake. we saw the air, the relative humidity coming down to the single digits. that's extremely dry air and it continues into the evening. these areas in red will have some critically dry conditions, but at least we will have some nice recovery and the humidity coming up early tomorrow morning. as far as the wind,

there because there are some wind gusts. we heard bob talking about that this morning. yeah. and so we had a lot of high winds, especially in southern california. and then we've also had the smoke that's been drifting around from the fires that are burning across the region. as far as the impact for that to the bay area, it's been mainly north bay, and that's where it does stay into at least the early afternoon. but notice this evening that as the wind picks up, coming in from the north, it's going to spread that smoke across much of the bay area. and start to have an impact on our air quality as we go into this evening. and a lot more of that smoke has been moving across the region into the central valley. so we are going to have a hazy sky and the spare the air alert for today into tomorrow in those areas where we are going to see the shift in the wind direction change where that smoke will be coming. but we are looking at still a high fire danger for grasses, brushes elevated. we're seeing very low humidity within the vegetation zone. and that means that if it gets burning, it could spread very quickly. so we'll be watching out for that. we'll talk about the change in

cool sport that it is on. on a big stage. it's really cool. so is downtown indy transformed into an olympic village with its own eiffel tower, an aqua zone with interactive games and lots of gear to the wall she goes and in the pool, a lot of grit and determination for the athletes battling to be a part of team usa. he'll win in the 400 im and book a trip to paris. yes, so look more than a thousand swimmers are competing here for what are 52 spots on the swimming team, 26 women, 26 men. to give you an idea, marcus, of how close things are, how strong this team is. last night in the women's 100 fly, the third place finisher, the woman who won't make the olympics in that discipline, regan smith. though she is a favorite in the 200. by the way, she swam the fifth fastest time ever for the 100 fly and still didn't make the

team so very intense. and you can watch it all right here this evening during prime time. it's worth the watch. it's a lot of fun that it will be. i was hoping to see you in the water doing, you know, the dog paddle, something. give me something. i left my floaties at home. i couldn't, i left my floaties and they won't let me do a cannonball. it's just a okay, well, we'll see you in four years then. in the competition. thanks, jay. and a reminder for you. we are your home for everything olympics. you can watch the pairs games right here on nbc bay area. we're going to kick things off on july 26th. that's cool. you know, to jay's point, i remember reading somewhere, buster crabbe, who was an actor and a olympian years ago. he was the american olympian gold medal in swimming. he would not qualify in any country for any swimming event.
6:51 am
yeah, he was number one. but this was what, 1930s? that's how much faster they had just invented water. yeah. just before that, everybody just sank. yeah, exactly. it was ridiculous. well, those hopeful for the summer olympics in los angeles, they can start practicing now. okay. well, yeah. you know, that is coming up in the next few years. so we are going to of course, today, you know, see what we can do out there. we're trying to run bike and, you know, get that inspiration from the olympians. and we're starting out with some cool weather this morning. it's in the upper 40s in san rafael. as you're walking out in san jose, it's 57 degrees and 53 right now in dublin. because of the high fire danger, we do need to be very careful. make sure that you already have that defensible space around your home, especially if you live in the hills. you know what i'm talking about. but for everyone else, you want to avoid that cigaret litter or anything that could spark some fire. these conditions are way too dry to even drive on the grass, and you also want to secure any toe chains or anything that could create some sparks and use
6:52 am
grills on paved surfaces. with these warmer temperatures, we know people want to cook outside, and you want to make sure that you're being careful with those coals as well. looking at our relative humidity , this is one of the factors that determines whether or not we're under a red flag warning. when we have low humidity and high winds, that means that fires could spread and develop very quickly. as of now, we're starting out with some high humidity this morning, and when we're close to the 90 to 100% range, that means the humidity is very high. there's a lot of moisture in the air, but as we go throughout the day, the humidity levels will be dropping and some of the lowest and some of the driest conditions will be in parts of the north bay, along with that dry northerly wind into this afternoon. but temperature wise, we're not seeing any extreme heat. we're ranging from upper 60s near the coast to upper 80s inland, and this is the weather we'll see throughout the week. but as we head into the weekend, it's going to be heating up in san jose is going to have a quick spike in temperatures between friday and saturday. and then it

comes back down for sunday into next week. so overall, we're in for some very mild conditions throughout the week, very seasonable as we officially welcome in summer on this thursday. so we'll be tracking all of those changes for you. mike, you're following up on that south bay crash. yeah. this is unwelcome. this is a closure though that was going on. see you slow down now. eastbound 237 heading toward the nimitz. so. 237 to 880 north. that flyover was temporarily closed. i hope they have it open in the next couple of minutes. and i'll double check to see if we get any timing on that. but that is a factor there. now, the flyover may be closed, but you can still make the transition on those lower streets. you just can't use the express lane as far as i understand. right now we're looking at the rest of the south bay, though. we see the northbound bill for 101 and 87. the rest of the bay pretty standard, with the east bay seeing the most build as well. back to you all right, mike, well, happening now. you can already be fine for parking in a bus lane, but ac transit is using automated enforcement to issue citations to drivers who block bus lanes between oakland
6:54 am
and san leandro, because the busses have cameras that will detect if a car is in that lane, those cameras take an image, send it to transit and law enforcement. they write the ticket and that'll cost you about $100. anyone can be fined, including taxis, rideshare drivers and delivery trucks. and the top stories we're following this morning, including that breaking news where a wildfire is forcing evacuations in wine country. we have live team coverage on where containment stands and the expected impact on our air quality. keep you right here

but look at the top stories on today in the bay, starting with breaking news in the north bay. firefighters in wine country, they're making some progress tackling the wildfire that exploded in size yesterday.
6:58 am
today in the bay's bob redell live for us over in hillsboro. so bob, just you got an update from firefighters. what are they saying? it has grown slightly in size. we're talking about the point fire, which is burning about seven miles northwest of downtown healdsburg. we're at you can smell it here. it's not overwhelming, but you definitely know that something is burning in the hills here above us in wine country. cal fire says the point fire has now grown to 1100 acres and is now 50. excuse me, 20% contained. now, when this fire started, around 1230 yesterday afternoon is much smaller. at 3:00 in the afternoon was 120 acres. so again, now just over around 1100 acres. hundreds of firefighters from across the region there on the scene, two homes have been lost so far, but the firefighters have saved hundreds of other structures. there are mandatory evacuations. in effect, cal fire is pleading with people to follow those orders if they are in a mandatory evacuation zone because the wind and terrain do
6:59 am
make this fire unpredictable and the steep hillsides are covered in manzanita, madrone and oak trees, which are highly flammable. reporting live here in healdsburg, bob redell today in the bay. all right, bob, thank you. now, also overnight, an apparent rescue involving someone injured in the fire. cal fire says that they rescued a man. this was near mountain view road. you can see right here from this video. although it's dark, look closely. there you can see the team airlifting him from that area. not exactly sure how he was injured, but our photographer there at the scene says that it is possible that he was hit by a fallen tree branch. kerry bob mentioned the winds. that's going to be. it's always a factor. yeah, absolutely. that when you combine it with low humidity, i mean, that is what makes it very critical for those fire conditions. and we are at least not dealing with any extreme heat. it's going to be a mild week and summer officially begins on thursday, but it will be a hot weekend ahead for the inland valleys, reaching up to the lower 90s saturday and sunday. and in the south bay. we're still watching this connector ramp that's closed, although the speed sensors just

cleared up eastbound 237 to northbound 880. there was a crash a couple tow trucks are needed and there's some debris, so you might have to avoid that connector. thank you. mike. well, the today show just ahead. we continue today in the bay on roku and other streaming platforms. you can watch our 8 p.m. newscast also at nbcbayarea.com or your smartphone app. all right. well that does it for us here on today in the bay this monday morning. we'll see you back here at 8:00. also for our news update coming up and about 30 minutes. have a great monday. good monday morning. get ready to crank that ac. good monday morning. get ready to crank that ac. >> yeah. much of the country set for a scorching week ahead. good morning. it's june 17th. this is "today."
