good morning. i'm frances rivera. we begin out west where more than a dozen wievldfires are burning across california. crews are fighting the arrow fire. it's already devoured more than 5,000 acres since it sparked monday afternoon. one firefighter was injured fighting flames near sonoma. further south, the post fire has taken over more than 15,000 acres and is 20% con contained. this as an early-season heat wave is scorching millions coast-to-coast. temperatures soaring up to 25 degrees above average and threatening to shatter more than 100 daily records this week. let's turn to michelle grossman. >> great to see you. it's going to be a tough week for many. you want to take action now. get the fan, the air

conditioning. we're going to see temperatures soaring well above normal for this time of year into record-breaking territory. 72 million under heat alerts. heat warning for major cities like detroit, cleveland, philadelphia, boston. you are under a heat advisory as well. and we will see temperatures into the 90s into the triple digits. if you're not into the triple digits with the humidity you're going to feel like the triple digits in many spots. we have a big area of high pressure pump ping pumping in t. newark, 94. look at burlington, vermont, 96. tomorrow, equally as hot. we're looking at temperatures from portions of the midwest, the ohio valley, the great lakes into the 90s. pittsburgh tomorrow, 94 degrees. we're heating up outside many we're also heating up in the tropics. we'll talk more about that

frances. it seems there's little doubt that the focus of their talks will all be centered around munitions. there have been concerns about an agreement between the two nations where north korea, the government there and pyongyang provides much-needed arms to russia for their war in ukraine, in exchange for economic aid as well as technology. putin's press secretary last week saying about north korea that north korea's our neighbor. it is a country friendly to us with whom we are building bilateral relations. we will continue to do it progressively. and, you know, while americans and south korean officials have accused north korea of providing artillery and other munitions to russia, both sides have of course denied it, as it would be in violation of various u.n. security council resolutions. but during putin's two-day state visit, he's expected to arrive

today and meet tomorrow with kim jong un, and it is his first visit to the country since winning his first election as president of russia back in 2000 when he traveled to north korea to visit kooim jong un's father kim jong il, who was then leader of the country. this comes on the healels of th naval drills. but again, it will all be, have to be seen what happens from their visit and what kind of agreements come out, if they are, in fact, forthright. >> chapman, thank you. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu has disbanded the emergency war cabinet established in the wake of the hamas attack on october 7. the move was widely expected after opposition politician benny gantz withdrew from the coalition. but it will likely increase scrutiny of the war which was

killed at least 37,000 palestinians. our nbc news team in gaza collected the stories of people who lost everything in a bloody hostage rescue operation by the idf. here's raf sanchez. and we should warn you, some of the images are disturbing. >> reporter: these images of israeli commandos rescuing hostages were celebrated around the world. but, inside gaza, our nbc news crew documenting the painful other side of the story. the hamas-run health ministry says at least 64 children were killed by israeli fire during the raid. these are the stories of three of them. she was already a mother in mourning long before the raid. her eldest son died of cancer in 2022. and, in march, she says her two daughters were killed by an israeli strike. her 4-year-old, her only

surviving child would ask, why am i living? why didn't i go with my sisters? on june 8, as israeli troops moved in, she crouched in this corner, cradling tawfiq in her arms. she saw blood on his face. doctors at first thought tawfiq was dead. but just as he was being placed among the bodies, his hand twitched. a desperate rush to the emergency room, but the hope short-lived. he died five days later, his mother says. he lived through three wars, his brother's death, his sisters' death. tawfiq never saw anything but war. the idf says it has acted since the beginning of the war on its duty to return the hostages brutally kidnapped on october 7, adding this operation is solid proof hamas is hiding behind civilians and is holding hostages in the midst of densely-populated civilian

areas. you can see the house where tawfiq was killed was just 200 yards from the civilian homes where the hostages were held. but, over a mile away, near the coast, nora says she was getting lunch ready when israeli helicopters opened fire on their camp. her 8-year-old son was killed instantly, she says. while his older brother ahmed later died of his injuries. he would tell me, i want to go abroad and study and come back to gaza. i'd like to be a doctor, mommy. the idf says every loss of civilian life is a tragedy, a tragedy that hamas brought upon us all. the idf will continue to take all feasible measures in order to minimize civilian casualties. little comfort for nora, who's left with only pictures and memories of her two young boys who made each other smile, even in a war they doesn't understand. raf sanchez, nbc news, tel aviv. florida can't catch a break

club in colorado springs. he made a deal with prosecutors that if approved by a judge would lead to multiple life sentences. a second federal judge has blocked the biden administration's effort to expand protections for lgbtq students with a new title ix rule. it brings the total to ten states after a separate ruling last week. the new biden rule would have prohibited discrimination based on gender identity. but conservative groups and republican attorneys general filing suit arguing that they would undermine equal opportunities for women and conflict with some state laws. the u.s. surgeon general is calling on congress to require a warning label on social media platforms, similar to the ones you see on tobacco products. in a "new york times" op ed, vivek murthy says social media is fueling a mental health crisis in young people.
