a true giant of baseball. willie mays has died at the age of 93. considered by many to be the best baseball player of all time, he shattered records on both sides of the ball while in new york and san francisco. tributes pouring in for the giants' legend. former president obama calling him an inspiration to an entire generation. our steve patterson starts us off with a look back at willie mays' legacy. >> there's a long drive, way back in center field. way back, back, it is gone! >> reporter: it would going one of baseball's most legendary moments. the 1954 world series. an over-the-shoulder catch that would be immortalized in baseball history. >> it was always known in baseball as "the catch", and

every kne everybody knew what you were talking about. >> reporter: the say hey kid went from one of the star players to one of the legends. >> he draws everybody together. all sorts of different fans. >> he was always just the legend for me growing up. >> reporter: 660 home runs. more than 3,000 hits. 24 all-star appearances. 12 straight golden glove awards and a world series ring. >> willie mays was the greatest player that i ever saw. and i think one of the greatest players that anybody ever saw. >> reporter: hall of fame giants broadcaster, jon miller, says there's little to argue about. >> at his peak, you could make a very strong case that willie mays was best player there ever was. >> reporter: in 1931, mays was born into sports, growing up in segregated alabama with two athlete parents, he was a natural talent early on. signed by the negro league team while still in high school. despite his accolades on the field, life for a black family

in the deep south was hard. >> i can only imagine the things that he saw and endured as a young black person in the deep south, where they had the jim crow laws, and they had the ku klux klan, you know, the idea was just to survive. >> reporter: leading the birmingham black barons to a world series before getting signed to the major leagues by the new york giants. he started strong, winning rookie of the year before being drafted into the army. when mays returned to the game, he led the giants to a world series victory, with the catch. >> almost single-handedly turned that world series around in game one when he made what is still to this day considered the greatest gr greatest catch in world series history. >> reporter: his ability to slug increased. >> he could do everything on the baseball field. he was the first guy to hit 30 home runs in a year and steal 30 bases. they call it the 30-30.

there were things about willie that had never been done that willie did. >> reporter: the giants moved to san francisco, they mays and h were told they couldn't buy property in the city, a common practice to keep black families out of the city. he finished his career in new york with the mets, his last game in 1973. inducted into the baseball hall of fame, his first year of eligibility. >> life to me, baseball, that means dedication. >> reporter: mays never left baseball, serving as a part-time coach, manager and all-around ambassador to the game. >> willie howard mays jr. >> reporter: he was awarded the presidential medal of freedom, capping an incredible career, life and legacy. >> his life stormy remy remindsd

inspire generations of americans. >> reporter: a champion on the field, an icon off it. >> what i did, i loved every moment of it. >> reporter: and mays did do it all without ever looking back. steve patterson, nbc news. let's turn now to the executive action taken by president biden that could be life-changing for hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants living in the united states. it prevents deportation for many migrants who are married to u.s. citizens. alice barr joins us from d.c. hi, alice. the president focussed a lot on the economy when he made this announcement. >> reporter: a key focus for sure, frances. president biden said that these actions will be good for american businesses. previously, migrants who crossed the border illegallywould have to leave the country if they wanted to apply for citizenship through marriage. now migrants who've been leheret least ten years or more can

apply without being separated from their families for long periods of time. he also wants to make it easier for some migrants to get work visas. >> these couples have been raising their families, sending their kids to church and school, paying taxes and living in fear in the united states all this time with fear and uncertainty. we can fix that, and that's what i'm going to do today. >> reporter: former president trump wasted no time in attacking this plan, saying it provides unconstitutional mass amnesty that will encourage more team to come to the u.s. illegally. >> this biden amnesty is a direct attack on american democracy. whe when i'm reelected, joe biden's illegal amnesty plan will be ripped up and thrown out on the very first day that we're back in office. >> reporter: house speaker mike johnson also condemned the plan, saying it will only wincentiviz more illegal immigration. the speaker fully expect the

executive action to be challenged and struck down in court. frances? >> alice, thank you. new this morning after a short trial, an american off-duty soldier has been sentenced to three years and nine months in a russian penal colony. gordon black was arrested may 2nd in vladivostok in russia's far east. he was charged with making death threats against his russian girlfriend in theft. his lawyer says he will appeal. the latest escalation of tensions between russia and america comes during vladimir putin's ongoing visit to north korea, a major supplier for his arms for the war in ukraine. disgraced pastor robert morris has resigned after confessing to sexual behavior with a girl who was 12 years old in the '80s. morris did not respond to a

request for comment. it's unclear what criminal investigations he would now face. robert morris is known for efforts to advance a christian political moriality agenda. many of his republican allies now distancing themselves from him. an icon of pop music is facing new legal troubles. justin timberlake was arrested and charged with driving while intox intoxicated. >> reporter: pop super star justin timberlake pleaded not guilty after he was arrested by police on dwi charges. he had left the american hotel in a gray bmw with florida plates. just after midnight he rolled through this stop sign on madison street, and then they saw him swerve twice before stopping him. according to court papers, the

officer observed that timberlake's eyes were bloodshot and glassy, displayed slow speech and was unsteady afoot. timberlake refused a breathalyzer and blood test, telling police, no, i'm not doing a chemical test. >> no one should drink and drive anywhere, including sag harbor. i don't know any of the details about their is case, that's for sure. >> reporter: he allegedly said he had one martini at the american hotel and left with friends. billy joel weighed in. >> judge not lest you be judged. >> i thought he was one of of the nice ones. the ones that were a little bit more settled in. >> if you're going to drink, don't drive, and especially for celebrities. they have the money to hire a driver. why are you driving? >> and our thanks for that report. turning now to the dozens of wildfires raging out west.

one person has died in new mexico, and around 1400 structures have been destroyed after the flames forced the evacuation of the entire population of more than 7,000 people. new mexico's governor declaring a state of emergency for lincoln county, and the apache reservation. the salt fire and another fire have burned 20,000 acres so far. meanwhile, millions are sweltering under a record-breaking heat wave. the 911 system went down for hours in massachusetts. and pittsburgh reaching 105 degrees as severe storms knock out power to tens of thousands. and today is expected to be another day of dangerously high temperatures. let's bring in michelle grossman. it was already so tough yesterday. i can't imagine it being even hotter. >> i know. we're going to see a couple days
