rivera. scorching temperatures continue to broil much of the country this morning. out west, the dangerous heat fueling dozens of wildfires. in new mexico, one person has died, and around 1400 structures have been destroyed after fires forced the evacuation of an entire population of more than 7,000 people. the south fork and salt fires have burned a combined 20,000 acres so far and are 0% contained. maggie vespa starts us off. >> reporter: the extreme heat is expanding east. >> it's hot. really, really hot. >> reporter: with 73 million americans from iowa through maine in sweltering temps. hof hovering in the 90s for at least five days. officials in massachusetts giving out local numbers force first responders after the state's 911 system went down for hours. >> we thought it was important,

and near daily cross-border fire between hezbollah and lebanon and israel in the north, including airstrikes has recently escalated, leading to the white house to send a senior adviser to israel and lebanon to meet with figures, leading figures in both governments. hochstein saying he had been dispatched as the situation had become serious, adding president biden wants to avoid further escalation to a greater war. and while israel's defense forces say operational plans for an offensive in lebanon have been approved and validated, following the escalation in fighting and the war of words between the two sides, hezbollah has said they would stop attacking israel if there was a cease-fire in gaza, and also amos hochstein saying the best way to avoid a greater fight is to get a cease-fire in gaza. now, a war with hezbollah and

israel could be potentially greater, as hezbollah, backed by iran as well, has a larger arsenal, as well as more, bigger fighting force than hamas. so there's real hopes that diplomacy can prevail, and a larger war can be avoided for the region, as they've been saying all along, trying to avoid escalation in the region, frances? >> okay, chapman, thank you. new this morning, after a short trial, an american off-duty soldier has been sentenced to three years and nine months in a russian penal colony. gordon black seen here was arrested may 2nd in vladivostok in russia's far east. he was charged with making death threats against his russian girlfriend in addition to theft. black has denied threatening her but did confess to stealing some money. just over a hundred dollars. his lawyers say they will appeal. the latest escalation of tensions between russia and america comes during vladimir putin's ongoing visit to north
