expect. beautiful day yesterday. it was nice yesterday and will be even better today. we're going to see some cooler temperatures and also some breezy winds with a lot of sunshine. we're getting started this morning at 57 in san jose and 45 in san rafael. taking a look at san francisco and dublin, where we're right now at 52 degrees. well, as we get a look at what to expect for today, we're going to bring it down a couple of more degrees compared to yesterday afternoon. instead of low 80s. we're in the upper 70s for san jose, staying in the 70s through the tri valley and into the north bay. we're looking at temperatures in the upper 70s and low 80s, while san francisco will be in the low 60s. tomorrow's our first day of summer, and we're looking at temperatures coming up a degree or two, but still pretty nice. the major heat blasts us this weekend, so we'll talk about that in a few minutes. mike, you're tracking a lot of activity in palo alto. yeah, there were lots of lights lined up northbound just for about a minute or two, and then things started to ease up. i see more activity north of marsh. i believe those are the crews, the

overnight crews that are clearing right on schedule. we don't see any more slowing past university, but again, we may see a little blip here to heading up toward redwood city. no complaints as far as any of the roadwork that was going on the overnight closure, everything sounds like it's a scheduled and reopening right now, as we're looking at 84 through niles canyon and a little bit of slowing out of the altamont pass traditional there for westbound 580. everything else pretty much at speed throughout contra costa county and the north bay as well. back to you. thanks so much, mike. well, san francisco is waking up this morning without one of its legends, willie mays, one of baseball's greatest and most beloved players of all time, dies at the age of 93. today in the bay, ginger conejero saab is live in san francisco with morning this morning with more on a man he was certainly bigger than baseball. that's right, marcus and laura. he was considered by many to be one of baseball's greats. but more than that, he was bigger than baseball. he was a part of american culture and history and

here in the bay area and in san francisco, we had the privilege of seeing him up close. it's been a really, i guess, good run for me, because cause when you can come into a town and people love you the same way where you came from, to me, that's wonderful. and that is the say, hey, kid himself at san francisco's oracle park yesterday, the san francisco giants released a statement saying, quote, it is with great sadness that we announce that san francisco giants legend and hall of famer willie mays passed away peacefully this afternoon at the age of 93. mays, in his own words, had a good run. the alabama native played for 22 big league seasons, breaking in with the new york giants in 1951 and then becoming a fixture in san francisco when the franchise moved west. he tried bringing the bay area its first world series title back in 1962, but the giants fell short. he ended

his career back in new york with the mets in 1973, and soon after he returned right here to the bay area. during his legendary baseball career, mays hit more than 600 home runs, banged up more than 3000 hits, he won two mvp awards, 12 gold gloves and named an all star, 24 times. in 1979, he was inducted into the baseball hall of fame and in 2015, mays was also awarded the presidential medal of freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor. by then president barack obama. all i can say, thank you. thank the guys that i played with and hope they had a good time playing with me. well, we certainly had a good time watching you, mr. mays. and in the next half hour, we're going to hear more from people who were impacted by not just the way that he played, but the way that he also lived his life outside of the ballpark. ■guys, back to you to say, hey kid, what a what a legend. thanks so

much, ginger. hey, kid. well, the loss of willie mays felt across the world. longtime newscaster, sportscaster, and former olympic host bob costas went on today to talk about the cultural significance that mays had on the world. martin luther king told willie and other black players the same thing. willie mays was not as overtly political as contemporaries like jim brown, or certainly muhammad ali or arthur ashe, or a bit later on, kareem abdul-jabbar, bill russell and others. he was not overtly political, but both martin luther king and barack obama expressed the sentiment that without people like willie mays and other ballplayers and public figures in the 50s and 60s who gained perhaps grudging acceptance from the larger white culture that played a part, it might have been a more subtle part, but it played a part in the long march toward justice. it's so true. our coverage continues both on air and online

of the legendary willie mays. you can read more about his life and how he's being remembered. 506 right now, oakland mayor shengtao facing a challenge we've seen more often recently. a recall brought on by her constituents. yeah, today we're actually hearing from the group that says they have enough signatures to bring that issue up for a vote in november. today at the base, kris sanchez joining us now. okay. so chris, what do we go from here. so the oakland city council won't discuss this until next month at their next regular regularly scheduled meeting. but the people behind the push, they are planning to speak this morning about what they say is an historic achievement. the group, called oakland united to recall shang tower oust for short, got notice from the city of oakland that the 40,000 signatures they gathered were enough to qualify the recall for the november election. we talked with people on both sides of the issue. both mentioned the impact on trust, demoralize the city. we trust

it. leronne armstrong. we don't trust mayor tower. it's made you know, people question why vote right. and i think that that consequence is really what concerns us that this is starting to turn off voters now. we reached out to the mayor's office for comment tonight, but we're forwarded to her campaign team. they have not yet responded to our request. now, the oust campaign will speak at 11:00 this morning in oakland. we'll bring you an update in our midday newscast at 11. yeah, they've been fighting for that for some time. yes they have. thanks, chris. well, today is juneteenth, a federal holiday commemorating the day in 1865. this is when enslaved people in galveston, texas, learned that they were free two years after the emancipation proclamation. now, there are many events planned across the bay area honoring juneteenth at the oakland museum, a celebration called hello, juneteenth, the cookout. and in redwood city at cardinal hall. the juneteenth

cooking demo, with award winning chefs terry braggs as well as william montague, and they will make dishes rooted in black culinary tradition, both of those events start at 1:00. now to the latest on the point fire burning in sonoma county. fire officials tell us it's now 50% contained since it broke out sunday. it's burned 1200 acres, destroyed two structures. one firefighter has been hurt. it's caused poor air quality, especially in the north and east bays. an air advisory has been extended into today. as for the sites fire, it is just 5% contained this morning. it's burned more than 15,000 acres, forcing the evacuation of campgrounds at east park reservoir in colusa county. the fire first broke out on monday for a look at the air quality that we're facing this morning, let's check in with meteorologist kari hall. yeah we're starting out with some mostly clear skies, a light wind, a live look out there in san rafael. we will have to watch the north bay for some of

that smoke, but most of the smoke is coming from the sites. fire just to the east of clear lake. and a lot of the smoke that we are seeing is blowing around that local area. but then off towards the, the east. so we're not seeing that moving into much of the bay area. and that's what we're expecting today. so look at the arrows that shows the wind direction. that could bring some of the smoke across napa and santa rosa. but then from san francisco on southward, there is much more of a westerly wind. and that's going to help clear the air, bring in some fresher breezes for much of the rest of the bay area. we'll be watching out for that smoke. we'll talk about temperatures coming up. mike's been watching where we can find some lower gas prices. yeah, the best we can find in san francisco. look, as some prices rise, we start on fell street. that's 459 at the arco and then over in contra costa county the next price, 419 at valero in concord. a couple cents more for the low in the south bay. it's still in san jose. it's 411 today reported at platinum gas on tully road. and

washington, the ceo of boeing faced a senate subcommittee tuesday. the lawmakers were really much more worried about boeing's airplanes and the traveling public. why haven't you resigned, senator? i'm i'm sticking this through. i'm proud of having taken the job. i'm proud of our proud of this safety record. and i am very proud of our boeing people. you're proud of this safety record. i am proud of every action we have taken. not really sticking it through. he's going to quit by the end of the year, he has said, and boeing is still looking for a new ceo. so that company's problems continue. yeah. tough times it is. all right. thanks, scott. you bet. well happening today a huge milestone and donation for an affordable housing project in east oakland. today. wells fargo is set to present oakland's community development group, black cultural zone with a $1 million donation. the money is set to go to new housing project called the liberation park market hall and residences project. it will create 119

units of affordable housing in east oakland. it includes spaces for small businesses. organizers have worked all year to raise $50 million for that project, and today they'll also announce a fundraising milestone a diploma. this is a good one. a diploma 84 years in the making. this past sunday was graduation day at stanford university, and one woman walked. the stage was virginia hyslop. she's 105 years old and she looks great. look, she worked towards her master's degree in education at stanford back in 1940. virginia was almost done with, when life intervened here. this was on the eve of world war two. and virginia's husband, george, he was in the army. well, his unit was called up and virginia found herself 1500 miles away from stanford, raising her two children. however, virginia spent decades on boards and committees at every level of schooling, and her now hometown of yakima, washington, gave it a great deal of thought and tried

to improve the education in where i lived. and i do think i made a difference in our community. 105 i mean, she looks and sounds great. amazing. yeah. recently, her son in law contacted stanford, learned that virginia had all the credit she needed to graduate. she just hadn't completed her master's thesis. well, since then, that thesis requirement has been dropped so virginia could get her diploma and that she did. wow. congratulations. what a great story, right? that was kind of my theory, though. and some of my college classes was stick it out and maybe they'll just drop that requirement. yeah. didn't happen, but good for her. she put it she put it clearly put in her words. you gotta wait a little bit longer for another 80 years or so. that's amazing though too i know i've i'm like, sure. you can tell by the way she spoke, though, that she made things happen. oh, yeah. yeah. all right. well that's something to celebrate. it is the season of graduates. yep and, you know, we

have a lot going on around the bay area celebrating juneteenth. and if you have the day off of work, it's going to be a beautiful day. you'll be able to get out and enjoy as we take a look live right now in san francisco, we can see the low clouds that's helping to keep those temperatures down quite a bit. we're right now at 51 degrees, and we're seeing temperatures mostly in the low 50s, but it is a little bit warmer in the south bay with san jose's current temperature at 57. meanwhile in the north bay we're in the mid to upper 40s. so a cool start as you're heading out and take a look at our high temperature this afternoon. we'll see a high temperature of 77 in milpitas and san jose and los gatos, a high of 80. now we are also going to have a breezy wind picking up and looking at the east bay. our temperatures up to 80 in concord, 82 in antioch. while we're still in the 60s in oakland today and in the low 60s for half moon bay, san mateo, 66 degrees, a little bit warmer for palo alto, but still very comfortable. and san francisco's

highs anywhere from upper 50s to upper 60s and up to 80 today in santa rosa, a little bit warmer farther for lake and mendocino counties. we're going to see those temperatures in the upper 80s, while mill valley will be in the upper 60s. let's look ahead, because we are going to have major changes coming in over the next few days. it's going to be heating up quickly, and livermore goes from highs in the upper 70s to low 90s on friday and then topping 100 degrees on saturday. so that's a big change from what we're seeing today into the weekend as well as early next week. it comes down a few degrees, but we are going to have those temperatures spiking up to the mid 90s for a lot of spots inland, and once again, a few spots will hit the triple digits. it's looking much better for sunday into early next week, dropping it back to the 80s, while san francisco is going to see a high of about 74 on saturday. so i do think a lot of people are going to be flocking to the coastline to escape the valley heat. and mike, you've

been watching the roads and it seems like it's pretty calm this morning. right now. it's a great drive getting into san francisco across that bay bridge. look at that smooth tail light flow westbound into the city. eastbound. also smooth, but that's counter to our typical commute. the build is starting to show a little bit on highway 37. and let's check highway four. yeah. no no problem. it's all green here. oh, look at that. new incident shows up in berkeley or in richmond. i'm sorry. heading i believe in toward berkeley. i think it's on the westbound 80. but we'll double check once chp files that full report and a little bit of slowing shows on the incline. just showing there's more traffic there. and that will tend to happen over the course of the next half hour. we're looking at your commute eastbound 580 as you're coming down in toward the castro valley. why? no major problems. this crash is on the shoulder by now, but we'll continue to watch to make sure they clear that without any incident, south bay along the peninsula, an easy flow back to you. thank you so much, mike. well, it's 522 right now. and next here on today in the bay. nbc bay area response just in time for summer vacation. the bedbug population

now you're tracking a crash in san leandro. yeah, it's a crash. we had seen pop up on eastbound 580. so coming up, your commute, two vehicles reportedly involved in some unsafe driving. so watch because the two middle lanes may now be blocked. i see no slowing on the freeway itself, but we'll watch for that. again, this is as you're going away from the bay bridge on 580 with the arrow direction there. top of your screen around pinole valley road there is a crash. it's off the off ramp off the freeway. in fact, it's off the roadway. so activity there at the off ramp from westbound 80. but westbound 80 itself moves smoothly back to you. thanks, mike. one of baseball's greatest of all times has died. willie mays and of course, the city and the fans he played for. take a moment to look back at what he did for the sport. and of course, all the fans. yeah. today in the bay's ginger conejero saab live for us in san francisco this morning. and ginger, those close to him and those who watched him for far both, you know, so long at the same time. they say willie mays truly a giant in all

aspects of life, truly a giant. yes, marcus and laura, he was bigger than baseball. and you see it. you hear it in the people who speak about him and those who remember him. and it's not just his fans. the people who watched him for so long. it's also in the words of his fellow hall of famers, let's take a listen. well, mays was just the greatest. i mean, just god gifted, i guess. but, i've never seen anybody better. great, great. he makes it so easy for us. his last year, i'm playing left field for the padres. he had a fly ball to left. it was a, you know, a little texas leaguer. i caught the ball. when i caught it, i flipped it in, but i was shaking. my hands were shaking. you know what i mean? i just call willie mays fly ball. that's willie mays fly ball. those are hall of famers willie mccovey, orlando cepeda and dave

winfield. but hall of famer or not, you felt the magic of willie mays. we came out and i figured i got my trumpet in the trunk either taps or take me out to the ball game. so he made a difference for everybody who loves the game. he was so sweet and congratulated me after and said i did great and signed a ball for me and hung out for a little bit and it was just a peak childhood memory. the message popped up. willie mays passed away and i was like, oh, okay, we didn't even finish dinner. and we just came and paid our respects. and we can really expect more of that showering of love, honoring and respect to come in the days, in the days moving forward, guys. and ginger willie was actually going to be honored tomorrow in a game, recognizing, of course, all of his contributions not only to major league baseball, but to the leagues. and what a

significant contribution that was. laura, before he played in major league baseball, he was a significant player, impactful player in the leagues and this thursday, the giants will play the cardinals at rick field. at rickwood field, i should say in birmingham, alabama. this is a game that was scheduled in advance. it will honor mays and the leagues. and this was scheduled more than a year ago with him in mind. but this year, he will now be top of mind or after yesterday, he will be top of mind for so many people. he grew up just a few miles from this ballpark, and even leading up to this game, he was expected to be honored, but he was not expected to attend. but maybe now, for those who do believe he will be, he'll be there both in spirit and in the memories of so many people who he, who he impacted. yeah, no doubt, because he played there in

birmingham. that was his start. yeah. all right. thank you, ginger. of course, a legacy that lives on and our coverage of the legacy of willie mays and what he leaves behind continues. you can find more on the front page of our website, nbcbayarea.com. well, developing overnight, the city of richmond has pushed forward with a plan that could cause one of the area's largest employers tens of millions of dollars a year. today the bay's bob redell joining us live this morning. and, bob, we talked about this earlier this week. well, now it is up to those voters to decide whether that tax to tax chevron for the alleged harm caused by its oil refinery. correct. good morning, marcus and laura. late last night, the richmond city council voted unanimously, 7 to 0 to put on the november ballot a measure that, if approved by voters, could tax chevron tens of millions of dollars a year. you can dollars a year. you can hear the applause from the audience approving this vote during the

late night vote in the city council chambers, environmentalists and other citizens seen here rallying before the vote. they propose this measure to tax every barrel of oil that arrives at chevron's richmond refinery to be refined. the new money would go into the city's general fund. backers of the measure hope that some of that money will be used to help offset the costs of dealing with health and environmental problems caused by pollution from the refinery. one woman who we spoke with, who grew up near a refinery, says there are too many cases of cancers and asthma and her family and neighbors for there not to be a link. even though medical, professional and health officials have not scientifically linked the two in richmond, here's the city's vice mayor right before last night's vote. it doesn't make sense that, the one who contaminates the ones who just do a lot of myths, pay for that, pay for the ability to refine and pollute

the air, pollute the water, pollute the land and pay for that. we work tirelessly to, operate our facility in a safe and reliable manner. this is an activist tax proposal brought forward by by two activist organizations and promoted by activist city council members. we spoke with that chevron spokesman before the vote. he says that tax plan was rushed without considering the fact that this new tax will drain funds that are earmarked for improvements at the refinery or without considering the potential long term impact on the facility's ability to peruse, use union jobs and millions of dollars in local income, chevron notes. the facility has reduced emissions by 80% over the last few decades and lowered particulate releases by almost 40% since 2019. a petroleum industry trade group says this new tax could eventually raise the cost of

gasoline at chevron, gas stations like the one behind me reporting live bob redell today in the bay. all right. thanks for the latest, bob. well developing news in san francisco. police are investigating the shooting near church and market streets. it happened just after 9:00 last night. that victim was taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries. no information about any suspect or motive. a popular eucalyptus grove on highway 101, raising safety concerns for caltrans. if you've ever driven to monterey county, you've likely passed through the patch of eucalyptus just south of gilroy. well now it's getting the attention of transportation officials who plan to cut down more than 200 of the large trees that are considered unhealthy or unstable. eucalyptus trees are highly flammable and have shallow roots that can topple over, especially when the ground saturated. the trees have been blamed for several deadly accidents on various parts of that freeway. that includes a crash that killed two people after a tree fell onto a car

back in 2022. since that deadly accident, at least five more eucalyptus trees have fallen in the same area. it's dangerous, and as we all know, the traffic gets backed up there. the cars are just sitting there and those trees drop branches. they are threaten a lot of different ways . and you know, we've seen that we've seen that happen with people losing their lives. it's tragic. it shouldn't shouldn't be happening. caltrans says the removal project will start this fall. well, today we are of course, celebrating juneteenth. it is a day back in 1865, when the enslaved people of galveston, texas, learned they were free. two years after the emancipation proclamation. now, the bay area, commemorating what is more than just a federal holiday, with events planned across the bay area now, here are some of those things you can check out across the bay area san francisco african american art and cultural complex will hold a black family reunion. juneteenth block party this

morning at 11:00. kaiser permanente in south san francisco, also honoring both juneteenth and pride with a dance and celebration. and golden gate park is bringing back the art installation name monumental reckoning, along with a live performance and speakers. now, meteorologist kari hall has a look at what's shaping up for us, because folks are going to be out and enjoying the day. it's going to be nice for them. it's going to be a beautiful day and we have some nice, comfortable temperatures. it's going to be sunny at least for late morning into the afternoon. we're starting out with some clouds right now over san francisco. now looking at the day the sun will just kind of peek out from behind the clouds here as our temperatures go from mid 50s to upper 50s and only make it into the low 60s for today. so make sure you're wearing the layers and prepare for those gusty winds and cooler air that we'll see in san francisco and along the coastline. looking really nice for oakland today with highs in the upper 60s and 71. in hayward in san jose will reach a high of

77 degrees. and notice that a lot of these temperatures are going to be cooler than what we've seen recently. but as we go throughout the rest of the week, tomorrow, the first day of summer, and it's going to be very seasonable with temperatures in the mid 70s for the inner bay, low to mid 80s for the east bay, and we're up to 84 in santa rosa, while fairfield will hit a high of 87 degrees. and it gets even hotter looking at friday, we're going to see a lot more widespread 90s on the map here, but that's not even the hottest day. so we'll take a look at our 7-day forecast coming up. mike, you've been seeing more slowing showing up. yeah. it's not a surprise for most of our commute, the typical pattern for highway 37 and a little higher up because of the crash off the roadway, is probably visible with some flashing lights at pinole valley road, but westbound 80 is showing a smooth drive in toward richmond. a little slowing out of richmond, maybe at near the toll plaza. here's the big deal. this is counter commute. you don't expect any slowing here for eastbound 580, but we see a lot more now. we may have a third lane block. there are only four going eastbound this crash.

before the crash, reports of some unsafe driving through the area, a couple of vehicles, perhaps three, are here. no major injuries reported, but we're waiting for the updates. chp may either issue an alert or they'll say everything clear. i don't know exactly why there's so much slowing suddenly through the area, but that is eastbound 580 heading into castro valley. if you're heading through castro valley toward the bay bridge, you're okay. and the castro valley, why also moves nicely here. we're looking over here toward the overnight closures. remember, just a warning as you look ahead every night. we're having closures now through the end of the year, likely as they work on this bridge. but during the day, still typical traffic control for niles canyon on highway 84 and the south bay. everything moves nicely. the reminder today. also, juneteenth is a federal holiday, so there will be alterations to some of your schedules for these mass transit systems. you notice vta is not listed. they have standard service, but they also continue with that work on the blue line. so there's no train service from santa teresa to capitol stations. you're going to have to use the bus bridge.

50s. we have been dealing with the issues with the smoke blowing in the fires, burning farther off towards the north, and a lot of the smoke will be concentrated around the clear lake area around the sites. fire and then we're also going to see that slowly start to spread across the region. but it's going to be fairly localized until that onshore wind flow picks up later on this afternoon into the evening, and starts to push that smoke off towards the east. so we're just worried about the air quality for us for today as we're getting started in san jose. we're in the mid 50s. we'll see those temperatures continue through 6:00, and then as we go through late morning into the afternoon, gradually those temperatures start to come up as we head toward noon, we're going to be at 74 degrees and reaching into the mid to upper 70s. these numbers are well below what we typically see for this time in june. and then going into the evening, as those temperatures start to drop right at about 6:00, the wind will be picking up and at sunset will be at 66 degrees. here's a look at all of

our high temperatures for today. only up to 80 in los gatos today. and 68 degrees in oakland, while walnut creek will be in the upper 70s along the coast. low 60s for the afternoon and staying fairly chilly in san francisco too. keeping the jacket on today in the north bay, we're up to 77 napa and 80 today in santa rosa. going through our forecast tomorrow, the first day of summer. and as we go into the weekend, it's going to be heating up and really feeling like summer on saturday. we're up to 96 degrees. there may be a few spots inland hitting 100 degrees. we're in the upper 80s on sunday, so a nice recovery there and we'll start out next week in the mid 80s for highs, while san francisco is going to have a beautiful weekend. a little bit warmer there with mid 70s on saturday. mike, the traffic is mostly light right now. yeah, mostly because today is a holiday. we talk about the early commute. fewer folks at the bay bridge toll plaza, so no
