us live from the ballpark now in sergio. you can see people stopping by all day. yeah, janelle, it's been quite interesting to see. so many people come by it. a pretty steady pace. and you can see right now how so many flowers have been placed here at the statue. we've been watching people come by snapping photos. they've been chatting with each other about willie mays, and they also say that they are obviously mourning his loss, but they're also celebrating his amazing legacy. we say, hey, they saying willie, that typekit is great. one of the last times willie mays rounded the bases at what's now called oracle park was as part of his 90th birthday celebration for fans of the giants, seeing mays any time was a special treat that left a lasting impression. i went to the 2007 all-star game as a six year old and got to see him in person, but he was carted around the field and i rewatched that whole game recently on youtube. max colleen was one of many who

came to the growing collection of flowers and mementos at the willie mays statue. today. he showed us his 1961 willie mays trading card for san francisco native robert martinez. willie mays was one of the first famous people he ever met. he was on a school field trip at candlestick park, and they fed us lunch and they gave us a program guide and they said, you're going to meet some current players and some former players. and willie mays was there. he says. willie mays signed his program guide twice. across his 93 years, mays lived through a pivotal time in san francisco history, baseball history and american history as one of the first players where d the nickname the say hey, kid, may said. it's because he often couldn't remember so many new people's names as a giants rookie, so he'd say, hey, his athleticism, professionalism and standout personality left an impression on a generation of fans who started watching baseball as television became more common across the country and around the world. and when the giants moved to san francisco in 1958, he was an

integral part of the franchise. even if san francisco didn't immediately warm up to him. profound figure. his skill set, and to endure all the racism that he endured in in this city, people forget that for the first 4 or 5 years, a lot of white san francisco giants fans actually booed him. omar moore, who grew up in london, says mays was an important figure to him because of his perseverance. when san francisco did eventually embrace the star player, the feeling was mutual. he played 15 years for the san francisco giants and spent the rest of his life after baseball here and signs of his legacy are everywhere, from a children's sports club to a cable car. and of course, the plaza outside oracle park are all named in his honor. and for those who want to have further opportunities to pay their respects, there's lots of opportunities to do that. obviously, you can come by and leave flow from oracle park. hee they have an exhibit of his career, and they also have a

memorial book that people can sign. and then tomorrow oracle park is going to be open to the public. people can go in and pay their respects, and they're going to have a memorial book there to sign as well. reporting live in san francisco. i'm sergio quintana, nbc bay area news. thank you. sergio. among those remembering willie mays is longtime announcer and baseball historian bob costas on the today show. costas, look back at mays impact not just on the field, but off as well. willie mays was not as overtly political as contemporaries like jim brown, or certainly muhammad ali or arthur ashe, or a bit later on, kareem abdul-jabbar, bill russell and others. he was not overtly political, but both martin luther king and barack obama expressed the sentiment that without people like willie mays and other ballplayers and public figures in the 50s and 60s who gained perhaps grudging acceptance from the larger white culture that played a part, it might have been a more subtle

part, but it played a part in the long march toward justice. costas added that if you were lucky enough to have seen mays play in person, your eyes immediately went to him and just followed his every move. we will continue our coverage of willie mays life and legacy throughout this newscast. coming up at 550, we're going to take you to rickwood field in birmingham, where willie mays grew up, playing how major league baseball is preparing to honor him tomorrow night when the giants play a historic game there against the cardinals. a time to reflect and restore that was the goal of an oakland juneteenth celebration. today, the holiday is also highlighting one local organization's mission to build a lasting legacy in one of the town's most troubled communities, east oakland. nbc bay area's velena jones explains how the black cultural zone is making an impact, and the new fund that will now help move the dream of equality and opportunity forward. today on juneteenth, we're gathered here at the uptown market to

spill caused four crashes and the truck hauling the animal guts took off before authorities could get there. the company responsible has been a mystery until now. the chp confirmed to our investigative unit that the spill came from a truck operated by the texas based company darling ingredients. it turns animal waste parts into ingredients for pet food, fertilizer and fuel, and operate a large plant in san francisco. we dug into the company's background and found their trucks have a history of leaving gruesome messes in their wake. it's also the first time their drivers have left the scene of those spills. it's not the first time bigad shaban spoke to a small town police chief who you just saw from north carolina, and he told us the company has dumped blood, guts and animal parts across their roadways at least a dozen times over the past two years. whether they're slamming on brakes, going around a curve too fast, it just comes over the side of the trailers and now it's on our roadways.

what does it tell you? that even after everything your town has been through with these kinds of messes, there was just a recent one here in california. i think it just goes to show that we're not making any progress. you can catch the full story from bigad shaban at 11 tonight, with more on the company's recent safety violations and the drastic action one state took to deal with this company. the final stop on the road to paris for elites, street and park skateboarders is underway in budapest, hungary, the final qualification event before the paris olympics. one of the athletes hoping to carve her way to paris is a petaluma teenager. we caught up with 18 year old ministers at her home, where it is, of course, rad. every single day just go high, go fast. basically just go high. i love going high in the air. team usa skate park star ministries doesn't have to go far to practice when she's home. this is her backyard. everyone's always like, this is the best

skate park in petaluma, which i think it is honestly, i can't remember when this backyard wasn't here. i don't know, i've always been around skating. i can't imagine what my life would be without it. with the helmet and knee pads on. steph's was barely two years old when she got on a board for the first time with her big brother. her love for the sport and the board was instant. i think i've always just wanted to have my board with me, like i still always want to have my board with me. i feel like sounds weird. i feel naked without it. my name is min and i'm eight years old. i'm going to drop it. family home videos captured a young, fearless minna through the years riding stairs, ramps, and bowls. i mean, you can learn a bunch of tricks, but it doesn't really matter until you know you put your own style on it. back around that corner pocket. there it is, ollie. up the board. that style made history at the world skateboarding championship in rome last october. the wheels hitting the coping. there it is. oh yes. seth became the first female american park skater to earn a medal at the world event, taking third place. that's crazy. and i'm the first one. cerritos now has her sights on

paris, hoping to make her first olympic games. you know, it's, like, hard to, like, talk about it and, like, not like i'm trying not to, like, think about it too much and, like, psych myself out. i don't want to get too ahead of myself. it's like, that's a superstition. i guess it's like trying to, like, not think about it, what it would be like. i still have to get there, you know, helping her get there. mom and dad, one of them is always with her watching every competition. i don't know if i'll ever be a parent, but if i'm like, how do you like. they're like, they're so selfless. for me. and like, they make so many sacrifices and just help me get closer to what my goal is. making a career out of something that's fun is like, probably the best thing you can do. it's like, not supposed to be done a specific way you can make it your own, which is just which i think is just cool. there's no other sport like that. i feel like that was, of course, our jessica aguirre reporting. jessica, of course, is going to be going to paris to cover the olympics. we are featuring several other local athletes in the special half

today. now, the other thing that we did see is those temperatures dropping pretty dramatically, anywhere from 5 to 17 degrees colder here across the bay area currently leaving us with 71 in santa rosa, 75 in livermore, 70 in san jose and a chilly 59 in san francisco, as we head through tomorrow's forecast, we're still going to keep temperatures out of the 100 because the storm track is moving unusually close to us. so that hot area high pressure stays away at least for right now, but the other thing it's going to bring back is more that fog for tomorrow. i'm also tracking with the position of that small system, the small area of upper low pressure we may actually see with the circulation around this. unfortunately, a little bit of smoke return here to the bay area for tomorrow. it's going to be a combo effect here. not only some smoke, but also that fog at the coastline. so let's get a look at the smoke forecast. and through tonight. worst of the smoke. take a look at the key at the top. it's going to be in that red to magenta color. will stay up near the sites. fire in

colusa county. but as we roll through tomorrow morning you'll notice how that smoke starts to drift more and closer towards marin, napa, sonoma counties. as we head through tomorrow afternoon, we may see some of that return through the north bay, possibly into solano county. so an air quality advisory tomorrow, sonoma, napa and solano counties. and then some haze could go to the east bay and also the south bay. so we think at this time we'd see some unhealthy air, possibly in the afternoon. but then by tomorrow night we should start to get that smoke pushing out here off towards the east. so a little bit of smoke to contend with for tomorrow, but we'll also have that fog. so as you wake up, most of us seeing these low clouds and fog returns, some drizzle near the coastline and then we'll try to get in on some hazy sunshine here as we head through the afternoon. morning temperatures down here on the chilly side. 54 in the peninsula. south bay at 56. also riding in with 50s here for the rest of the bay area. temperatures tomorrow warm up anywhere from 4 to 8 degrees tomorrow, but i still think we'll stay out of the hot
