from oakland pd, and they said that during the day you had this juneteenth celebration taking place near lake merritt. they described it as a peaceful celebration taking place during the day. but then things took a turn as we got into those evening hours, specifically at 815. that's when police report that a sideshow broke out in this area. and then about half an hour later, this is the timeline we're getting that there was a fight that broke out. so at this point, that's when that led to the shooting of those reports that we were hearing of shootings in the area, and multiple people were shot. of course, we're showing you some of that video of folks that were transported as a result of that shooting. but here's oakland pd spokesperson paul chambers explaining a little bit more about that shooting. there were multiple people shot. right now, we do not have an exact number, but i can tell you at this time we do not know of anyone that was pronounced deceased at this moment, as i know right now. now, during all of this, they

the legacy of willie mays. we did a tour of the ballpark earlier today, and i got to tell you, i got emotional when i stood out in center field and you look back and so much of the ballpark still exists today. major league baseball really wanted to honor the history of rickwood field. they have renovated it. they have put millions of dollars into renovating this field to, you know, make it more modern. but they have kept all the charm, and it still feels like you're stepping back in time. and it really is a special place. you know, you walk around and i think for the players who will take the field here tomorrow, they will have the feeling that willie mays once played here, jackie robinson played here, satchel paige played here. nearly 200 hall of famers have come through this ballpark at some point. it also is a special place to willie mays, obviously being the place that he grew up. and this is something that he wanted. he wanted people to come back to his hometown and celebrate baseball. and that's what's happening here over the course of the week and especially tomorrow, when the giants will play here for alex pavlovich. i'm laura b'rit for nbc, bay area news. guys, thank

darling ingredion has made headlines before for leaving similar trails of animal remains in new jersey, virginia, canada and repeatedly in clinton, north carolina. this is not an easy cleanup. anthony davis is the police chief for the small agricultural town of clinton. about 60 miles south of raleigh, north carolina. the city is a frequent pass through for truck drivers, making deliveries for darling ingredients. the chief says his city has been forced to clean up at least a dozen of the company's roadway spills just over the past two years. what kinds of messes have you had to deal with? blood, guts, leftover feces, hog parts, legs? heads? we've seen a little bit of everything. chief davis says darlings, drivers were leaving the scene so often he pushed politicians to pass a new state law allowing his city to levy criminal charges against those who leave the scene of grisly messes. the law has only been in effect for about six months, but
1:53 am
the chief says two truck drivers from darling ingredients have already been criminally charged for new spills. we were able to locate the truck in a neighboring county, basically followed the trail of blood. and be honest with you. the chief says in his area, trucks for darling ingredients transport animal parts in open top trailers only covered by tarps. we checked out the trucks going in and out of the darling facility in san francisco and saw this same setup tarps draped over storage containers. whether they're slamming on brakes going around a curve too fast, it just comes over the side of the trailers and now it's on our roadways. what does it tell you? that even after everything your town has been through with these kinds of messes, there was just a recent one here in california. i think he just goes to show that we're not making any progress. we've learned darling ingredients and its subsidiary companies have been hit with at least 27 violations throughout the country for overfilling their vehicles just during the past year, according to federal transportation officials. at least a dozen other violations

were also issued for failing to properly secure cargo. and then there's the smell that lingers. it'll be weeks and weeks at a time. if the spill is pretty big, it's horrible. and you'll never forget the smell. you haven't i haven't absolutely not . and even for those in the bay area used to never ending traffic jams getting stalled by mounds of meat on the freeway still proved to be one memorable mess with the investigative unit on bigad ban. if you have a story for bigad or anyone else in our investigative unit, we urge you to give us a call. you see the numbers on your screen 888996 tips or visit our website nbcbayarea.com. slash investigative means. okay, let's turn things over to our chief meteorologist, jeff ranieri. we are talking smoke from the fires and a heat up as we head into the weekend. that's right. and a pretty complicated pattern we're tracking right now. the storm track is taking this unusual dip to the south here for june. that's getting the fall going back at the coastline, but it

also looks like it's going to come into play with that smoke forecast as we head through tomorrow. now, the way that this is setting up just to the north of us, that counterclockwise spin likely looks like it's going to bring in some smoke back to the bay area but it's going to be a combo effect. also, some fog at the coast. let me show you more details right now on that microclimate forecast. and we're going to start it off with a look at that hourly smoke forecast. and you'll see here as we head through tomorrow morning, the sites fire off to the north in colusa county. we showed you the video earlier in the show and watch how through the morning it just starts to drift right here towards the north bay, likely into the afternoon. we'd see more of that over marin, napa, also sonoma and solano counties. so an air quality advisory in effect here for tomorrow, where you certainly may be smelling that smoke, especially in the north bay. we could get some of that haze moving down towards the east bay and the south bay. but again, north bay is where you may need to limit that outdoor exposure. we should then
