breaking right now at six, a juneteenth celebration turns violent. new information we're learning from police overnight about the chaotic scene following a sideshow and shooting involving multiple people. also, the officers injured honoring a legend. the way fans across the country and here in the bay area are showing love for baseball icon willie mays. a stunning accusation from israel is raising tensions with the us. a live report from washington, with more on the high level meeting on hold and the impact on future negotiations. this is today in the bay. good thursday morning. i'm marcus washington and i'm
6:01 am
kris sanchez. laura garcia has the morning off. we want to get right to that breaking news out of oakland. the juneteenth celebration, which suddenly took a chaotic and violent turn and a warning. some of this video is disturbing. so you see, it wasn't even nighttime yet when the gunfire erupted, sending hundreds of people running for their lives, including the person who filmed this video and later posted it to instagram. right now, police are only saying that there were several people shot, but it is unclear if there was more than one shooter here is a live look at the scene where police just wrapped up their investigation. but you see the markings on the roadway from that sideshow there. thousands of people were out celebrating juneteenth last night when it happened. the sideshow itself started sometime after eight last night along grand and belleville avenues. then about a half hour later, police broke out. a police say there was a fight. the chaos
6:02 am
then left officers overwhelmed. we had 28 officers and four sergeants out here, so we had a full detail monitoring this event because we knew events were going to happen and we wanted to make sure people had a safe time, but unfortunately that did not happen. now at this time, police say there are several people in the hospital and there are no fatalities. police also say at one point officers were punched and shoved. some of them were hurt and one person was arrested for assaulting a police officer. now we will continue to monitor this story both on air and online. and in our next half hour, we will check in with bob redell, who's been gathering more details this morning. well, turning now to our forecast meteorologist, kari hall. she has been tracking those temperatures the first day officially of summer. yes, and we have a few more hours left of spring. but yes, summer begins this afternoon, and we're starting out with some cool temperatures. it's 49 in san francisco, 50 in santa rosa and sonoma, and upper 40s for
6:03 am
martinez, upper 50s for san jose as we check out novato and what to expect throughout the morning, we're going from 50 degrees and cloudy to seeing some peeks of sunshine in the next few hours and then warming up. overall a beautiful day ahead with a high temperature of 81 degrees, very much like it was yesterday. maybe a degree or two warmer in a couple of spots like fairfield, a high of 87 today, but we're still in the 70s in san jose and low to mid 80s in the south bay. we'll get a look ahead to some much bigger heat for the next couple of days. and our microclimate forecast that's coming up in a few minutes. thank you kari. well, tensions are rising once again between israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu and the biden administration. netanyahu accusing the us of withholding weapons and ammunitions to israel, slowing the progress in the war against hamas. well, today in the bay's alice barr is live in washington dc. alice, now we know that there's a high level meeting that's on hold. that's right. and that meeting was apparently
6:04 am
not officially, firmly set. the white house being careful to say nothing, has been formally canceled because nothing was formally set. but it certainly was in the works, and it certainly now is on hold. and that message from prime minister netanyahu was spoken in english. it was posted on social media. it appeared geared at an american audience. and it seems clear white house officials did not like what they heard in a new diplomat divide. a meeting expected today between high level u.s. and israeli officials postponed u.s. officials saying they will not reward israel with the washington sit down now after israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu leveled this accusation, it's inconceivable that in the past few months, the administration has been withholding weapons and ammunitions to israel. israel, america's closest ally, secretary of state antony blinken, adamant that the u.s. publicly paused just one shipment of 2,000 pound bombs that is still under review
6:05 am
because of our concerns about their use in densely populated area like rafah that remains under under review. but everything else is moving as it normally would move the white house saying billions of dollars of arms have continued to flow into israel, calling the suggestion of any other delays categorically untrue. president biden has warned that certain weapons shipments could be halted if israel launched a full scale assault in rafah. but despite intensified violence in the southern gaza city, where more than a million palestinians had been sheltering the white house maintains israel has not crossed a red line. and now growing concerns over a new front line, as israel signals it may soon launch a fresh offensive along its border with lebanon, where israeli forces and iranian backed hezbollah militants have stepped up strikes against each other as the u.s. works to avoid all out war. and prime minister

netanyahu is set to address a joint session of congress next month, despite pushback from several democratic lawmakers who are frustrated with the way he's been handling the war. and with the humanitarian crisis in gaza. marcus and chris, so much delicate conversation about it. and it's just so important. thank you very much. 605 this morning. and the tributes are growing and continuing to grow. and for the say hey kid, baseball icon willie mays will be honored today beyond the bay area today in the bay's ginger conejero saab is live in san francisco. and ginger, there are still a lot of opportunities for people to pay their respects and kind of celebrate the life of willie mays with fellow fans. well, that's right, marcus and kris and fans here in the bay area, here in san francisco continue to do that. the willie mays statue outside oracle park has really grown into a memorial for the say hey kid, but oracle

6:08 am
today. this is where i'm from. i had my first pro hit here at rickwood as a black baron, and now this year, some 76 years later, that hit finally got counted in the record books. i guess some things take time, but i always think better late than never. time changes things. time heals wounds and that's a good thing. and those are just beautiful words written in that letter that speak to his character. outside of baseball, that we've been hearing so much about marcus and kris now, as far as baseball is concerned and fans, they can go to oracle to watch that historic game between the giants and the cardinals. gates open at noon. first pitch is at 415. guys back to you. yeah, certainly a memory, a legacy that will be missed but still lives on. it was just so special to see fans turning out

6:10 am
it's right there. not what you want to see when you look out the window, right? well, that storm just hit eastern mexico about a half hour ago. it is the first named storm of the season. meteorologist kari hall, of course, been tracking this storm. and you said it was moving in. how strong are we talking about here? it was a tropical storm. so that's below 74 mile per hour winds. some of the gusts were up to about 45. this is not a significant storm, but it is the first of the season. and as it makes landfall in mexico, it is still well away from areas like south padre island. but you can see the outer rain bands moving into areas like houston. they're expecting up to an inch of rainfall, but it will definitely be much higher in parts of mexico as that storm weakens once again. this is the first one of the atlantic hurricane season. you can see all of the other names on the list as we continue through the season. this is expected to be a very busy hurricane season, so we'll continue to monitor as we're getting out the door this morning. we're seeing a lot of

heat, but the good thing is that we do have those opportunities because of the wide range in temperatures. so we are going to have our inland valleys heating up, and we are seeing another very beautiful and colorful sunrise. but the downside of that, it's because of smoke and it's going to look hazy today as we still have the sights, fire that's burning up around colusa county and some of that smoke is traveling into clear lake, calistoga. you can see a high concentration of that up around lake county and then moving down into napa county during late morning. but we could also see a little bit more of it in parts of the east bay for this afternoon. so if you're smelling the smoke, you might want to limit your time outside. and it looks a lot more widespread than it did yesterday due to a slight shift in the wind direction now coming in from the north, as opposed to that strong westerly wind that we had yesterday that was giving us some fresher breezes and it won't be as windy. we're still looking at about 25 to 30 mile per hour winds throughout the afternoon. but once again, that change in the direction is going to make

all the difference in our air quality. as far as temperatures, it's about the same as yesterday, mid 70s for the inner bay, some upper 70s for dublin and then upper 80s for fairfield. but mostly upper 70s and low 80s for the north bay, while san francisco stays in the 60s and then into the day tomorrow. slightly warmer, but we'll really feel that heat in the inland valleys like morgan hill up to 91 tomorrow, 93 in concord, and looking at some low 90s for santa rosa. the hottest day is saturday, where we could see some triple digits in a few spots, but a lot of upper 90s here. you'll want to take it easy and try to get to some air conditioning if you can. in napa , we'll have a couple of hot days friday and saturday, but sunday it's looking much better and that's the weather. we'll see continue into next week with our temperatures quickly going up and then back down a few degrees for early next week. but once again, that wide range in temperatures in san francisco, the warmest we'll see here is about 74 on saturday. mike still

tracking that major crash in the north bay. yeah kerry up by mondavi winery folks in the oakville area. we're looking at highway 29, which is completely blocked right now because of a deadly motorcycle crash. we're looking at this area in both directions. the alternate really is basically to get over to silverado trail. i know that's a little farther east than you might like, but that's the best route because there's only a couple of smaller streets that will take you through the area again. stay to silverado trail instead of highway 29. the coroner has been called likely another hour until they are going to clear that maybe hour and a half, but just plan on that delay for the time being for highway 29. in that portion of the north bay. meanwhile, north bay for highway 37, that's just fine. typical build for highway 37. also the richmond area toward the bridge and san rafael highway for shows the build and of course, the backup at the bay bridge toll plaza. just starting to slow down down the east shore freeway, but a smooth drive across the bay bridge span because of all these folks being metered over here at the toll plaza side, it's been a slower build, but it is filled
