developing stories in the east bay. an fbi search at the home of oakland mayor sheng thao. it's part of a larger investigation. what we're learning about it tonight, and then a joyful celebration at lake merritt ends in gunfire. at least 15 people shot. i couldn't make it to my car. i had to run for my life. witnesses describe the chaos that followed, plus a
7:01 pm
big sporting event. boom. the super bowl, the world cup and the nba all star game expected to bring in $1.4 billion for the bay area what's happening behind the scenes now to make sure everything goes smoothly and a truly special night for major league baseball. the giants in alabama playing on the very same field where willie mays got his start. good evening. this is nbc bay area news. tonight. i'm audrey asistio and we begin with two developing stories in oakland, including the fbi e feds searched at least four. homes, including the home of oakland mayor sheng thao. agents first showed up around 6:00 this morning.ei were startled by all the noise as the day went on. our cameras spotted several investigators bringing boxes and plastic bins outside of that house. law enforcement
7:02 pm
sources also tell us that the mayor's house is one of four places where search warrants were executed in oakland today, and two of the other homes searched appear to have links with two people with deep ties to both city politics and city business, according to property records. one home belongs to david wong, who is the ceo of california waste solutions. that's a local waste management company. property records show that the other home belongs to duong's son, andy. the duong family has also been tied to mayor sheng thao before. both are referenced in a 2020 city ethics complaint alleging campaign finance violations. that complaint and investigation remain open as of today, but no agency is saying it has any connection to today's action. now, all of this comes as mayor sheng thao is facing a recall. earlier this week, the alameda county registrar's office confirmed that they verified enough signatures on the recall recall petition to put it on the ballot. and tonight, supporters
7:03 pm
of the recall are calling for the mayor's resignation. so let's go ahead and bring in nbc bay area's pete serratos, who's at the mayor's house, and investigative reporter jaxon van derbeken pete, i want to go ahead and start with you this evening. what is happening where you are right now, and what have you learned about the investigation in. yeah, well, we know that people are inside of the mayor's home here in oakland in the oakland foothills. but as far as we know, the mayor is not one of them. but as you laid out there, audrey, this raid by the fbi taking place this morning and sources, of course, telling us that this was one of four search warrants at different locations around oakland this morning. and this operation included a number of agencies. you're talking about the fbi, the irs and the u.s. postal inspector. and in some of that video that our morning crews got, you can see investigators taking out boxes and plastic bins as a part of this investigation, but still no details from the fbi. as far as why these raids took place. but you did mention that recall, we
7:04 pm
actually had recall organizers here in the past hour. now they're calling for mayor tao to resign in light of today's news. and remember, it was on tuesday that they were able to get 40,000 signatures to get that recall vote on the november ballot, and we've been keeping a close eye on that for sure. pete jackson, i want to turn to you now, we mentioned four home search. what do we know about the people living at the other homes that the fbi searched today? well, two of the homes are tied to the that, ferm waste solutions. they, are the father and the son and both the father and the son. the duong family have separate houses and they're the subject of a long standing investigation by the ethics commission in oakland. and the focus is on them, allegedly, five people who would contribute to campaigns and candidates in oakland and elsewhere who wouldn't perhaps otherwise do so. they're known as straw men
7:05 pm
and women. actually, there's, a number of them, and they're kind of a rogues gallery. we've got some major figures in town, as well as people who act like maintenance and do other apparently somewhat menial chores. and the question is, how much time and who was involved and how they got the money. that's what ethics commission people are asking in their investigation, where did some of these people get the money to make thousands of dollars of contribution ongl jackson, there's a lot going on here. obviously, you've been looking at the court documents. i want to if you could actually just give us more more about the ethics violations. what are those all about? really? what did you learn? well we know that about 2018, 2017, there were a number of candidates running for the city council in oakland. and in other offices. and the allegations are that the son of the owner of the family, andy,
7:06 pm
allegedly was soliciting people to act as donors, and he would allegedly reimburse them. and what happened? according to people involved, complained to the ethics commission and they started an investigation bk in 2019. 2020 time frame. however, a number of the players in this have flatly refused and have filed legal challenges to the authority to seize documents and even give, statements to the ethics commission. so basically, the investigation had slowed to a crawl. and some recent developments, a number of the actions seeking cooperation have been withdrawn by the city. one wonders whether the ethics commission has gotten some cooperation in there. there were a number of figures who had been fighting this for years, who have now since the cases have been dropped against them. so we don't know what's going on now. we just know that the case is still ongoing, that the ethics
7:07 pm
commission investigation has not been resolved, investigations still happening right now. jackson. thank you. pete, i want to turn back to you now because, you know, all of this is happening in as we just learned that, you know, a lot of people want to recall mayor sheng thao, do we have any responserom the mayor tonight? yeah, i did reach out to the mayor's office tonight. they are not commenting on this. in fact, they're forwarding all inquiries to the fbi at this time. all right, pete and jackson, thank you so much for the very latest on the mayor's home search. we'll see you again later tonight. all right. our other developing story tonight. gunfire after a juneteenth celebration in oakland. police now say at least 15 people were shot as the event was wrapping up at lake merritt. and tonight, officers are on the hunt for the people responsible. know they shooting at each other . this video right here shows the immediate aftermath of that shooting. the bullets sent
7:08 pm
hundreds of people ducking for cover. the oakland police say the violence began when the event was actually wrapping up. first, about 20 vehicles started an illegal sideshow at grant and euclid, then fights broke out in the street. and that is when the gunfire started. as i mentioned, at least 15 people were hit, including a woman who says she was shot in the hand. it was tragic, i mean, tragic. all i could think about was my family and living to see another day. it's the day we were supposed to come out here and, you know, celebrate and have fun and it's just oakland got to do better. so far, there have been no arrests. but the oakland police chief says he and his officers are fully committed to bringing everyone responsible to justice. all right. another big headline tonight. a truly magical night of baseball. tonight the giants and the cardinals are in birmingham, alabama, for a game at the historic rickwood field. the mlb honoring the late, great willie mays, who died earlier
7:09 pm
this week as well as honoring the rest of the baseball players of the league. so let's go ahead and take you out live now to oracle park, where fans who didn't make the trek to birmingham could still go and enjoy the game. and that is also where our own anthony flores is live. anthony you've been talking to so many people out there today. what are they telling you and how? christ. yeah, truly an emotional day here at oracle park honoring a baseball legend and a bay area icon. giants fans are here at oracle park to pay their respects to the say, hey kid, willie mays playing catch with his daughter in center field. that's how bob hayes of sunnyvale is honoring his all time favorite baseball player, willie mays. what did willie mays mean to you so much? of course, idolized him. it was an emotional day at the ballpark. hundreds of giants fans paid
7:10 pm
tribute to the say, hey kid, who died tuesday at the age of 93. fans took pictures by his number 24, in center field and wrote their own personal notes to a bay area icon who is considered one of the best to ever play our national pastime. when you grow up with somebody for a long time, when you're a kid, you know, you kind of forget about it until something like this happens. so i appreciate the chance just to pay my respects. and nice to see everybody out here doing the same thing. mays played most of his 22 major league seasons with the giants, 15 in san francisco, fans filled oracle park to watch the giants play saint louis at rickwood field in alabama, where mays starred with the birmingham black barons. this game is honoring the history and legacy of mays and the leagues. it's long past due and, yeah, it's just any time that we're honored for what we have done in this country is special. and his
7:11 pm
impact goes well beyond the bay area. the reis family is from portland, oregon, but they wanted to bring their daughter here to today witness history. well, we're big baseball fans, and the impact that he had on the game and the impact that he had for many years after he was a player, and we thought it was worthwhile to pay our respects. today a celebration of life for somebody that's had an impact on on the world, really. it's kind of an important thing for us to remember through her. it was the best baseball player of all time. and even with that said, what he did off the field is even more impactful and monumental than what he did as a player. you know, it's just so hard to have him gone. it's, it's just difficult. and you got to speak with so many people out there today. we could tell from your piece a lot of emotion from so many people who've been touched by willie mays before. you ready? that's right. you know, willie mays was one of the first african american baseball superstars. he broke down barriers and inspired so many to
7:12 pm
chase their dreams. some of the fans i was speaking with would said they had memories of watching willie mays play baseball. but not only that, going back home, talking with their dads, and then later in life at the dinner table, talking with their kids about the life and legacy of willie mays. that's why he was so impactful to so many around here in the bay area. audrey and it just seems like a wonderful opportunity for so many fans that they get to be out there at oracle park and share their emotions and memories together. all right, anthony, thank you for bringing that to us. appreciate it. up next, what does it take to bring three mega sporting events to the bay area? we're getting some inside information about what it takes to pull off the nba all stars game. the super bowl and the world cup all in the span of a little more than a year. and then nearly 200 animals, including deer and bobcats, hit on a two mile stretch of road
7:13 pm
here in the bay area, where it's happening. and what's now being done to protect both drivers and the wildlife. you're watching nbc bay area news tonight. ay with usst
7:14 pm
7:15 pm
a area over the next couple of years. some of the biggest sporting events in the world are coming here and a lot of work is already happening behind the scenes to make sure everything goes smoothly. all right, so
7:16 pm
here's the lineup. first up it is the nba all star game. it's coming to san francisco's chase center next february after that it is super bowl 60. that's headed to levi's early 2026. and just months later. biggest event of them all the fifa world cup. levi's is one of 16 places in north america selected to host matches. we'll have a total of six. all right, so here's another look at how big this is. the bay area host committee, which is in charge of bringing the events here, says these events will translate into $1.4 billion for the bay area and that's not just san francisco and santa clara. it's the whole region. nbc bay area's raj mathai recently spoke to the president and ceo of the bay area host committee, talked about how they reached those numbers and what comes next. i think that's a big number here. $1.4 billion. the economic impact for the bay area from these big three events. how do you reach this number. yeah. raj
7:17 pm
thanks for having me. it is a big number. i love saying it out loud. i love it when you say it out loud. it is unprecedented. the bay area has never done three events like this. back to back to back. and so economic impact reports like this have also never been done before. for the bay area to have these three events put together from an economic impact perspective of the number comes from three different places. it is all around direct spend, direct spend of visitors that are coming into the bay area direct spends of officials. so when fifa and their referees and players come in, when the nfl comes in and then all of the logistics and operational spending that is done in the bay around these three events, it's the combination of those three things that come up and make up this big number and how do you get like the soft spending the local restaurant in downtown palo alto or the uber driver in north beach? how do you come up with that? yeah, the number is actually based on, prior events that are similar in type. and so
7:18 pm
what what the study does and what bcg did is they took direct spends that have happened in prior events that are similar and attributed those to the scale of the events that are going to happen here. and so that's the effect that happens on the local uber drivers and the restaurants. is basically transactional spends that have happened in prior events, very, very interesting, very interesting. and the other thing raj is also it includes jobs. right. and so we're we're going to see 13,000 jobs either sustained or new jobs developed just because of the events that are happening here in the bay. colleen what's the biggest stress for you as the ceo here? the biggest challenge is it security. is it transportation? what is it? yeah, i think for us it's just making sure that we can do these three events back to back to back. the challenge is in operationalizing those three while also trying to scale our organization. the bay area host committee is relatively new. we're about a year old in this phase of our journey, and
7:19 pm
we want to sustain in the long run. we want to be a sustainable sports commission. and so raj the challenge for me is actually balancing those two. you know, i have three short term product launches and then a long term scale that i have to be ready for as well. san francisco and santa clara, obviously the biggest benefactors here just because of obvious reasons. how do you incorporate other parts of the bay area, or are they just going to be kind of a second tier here? yeah, no. other parts of the bay area will be incorporated for sure. the economic impact study is divided into three parts san francisco, santa clara and then rest of bay. and the reason for that is because the primary game or the event will happen in, you know, at chase center or at levi's stadium, the rest of the bay. we will have community events. the nfl and fifa are looking to actually scale their presence across the bay area. and so that's on us to make sure that the entirety of the bay is actually positively impacted. okay, final question. you know, this is the biggest question.
7:20 pm
the most important one, how can you get me tickets? i this happens every single time we talk and you ask me the exact same question, i'll find a way. we'll figure it out. i'm not worried. it's against nbc policy, so don't worry. give them to your family members. give them to the real vips. colleen. good luck with everything. we'll be talking to you. hopefully all positive news, but obviously there will be challenges moving forward. good luck with all three projects. happy to do it. talk to you soon raj. take care raj trying to get some tickets. all right, moving on. it's being called a roadkill hot spot. we are talking about a two mile stretch of highway in the south bay. so let's go out and show you it is actually highway 17 between los gatos and the lexington reservoir. researchers say there have been about 200 crashes between cars and large animals in the past 15 years, and that includes animals like mountain lions and deer. and there is a solution in the works. it is a special underpass meant specifically for the wildlife. they can use it to get
7:21 pm
around without going onto the road. it's being proposed by the midpeninsula regional open space district group also wants to install fences along both sides of the highway in that area. this connection is really critical for wildlife, particularly mountain lions, to be able to access more open space, more habitat. officials hope the $38 million project will break ground in two years. let's go ahead and take another live look at oracle park now, where fans are paying tribute to the late, great willie mays does look a little foggy at the ballpark, but that certainly has not kept all the fans away there. we're going to take you back to look at your forast nextec

we took everyone live to oracle park. it's foggy out there. it's chilly. so for anyone in san francisco tonight, we do have temperatures down in the 50s. but the great part about this fog tonight, it really is helping out the air quality. we are good all across the bay area. let me show you more details right now on that microclimate forecast of where we're headed tomorrow, because the weather pattern is starting to transition to something a little bit different. here we have this area of high pressure out here in the pacific that's moving the storm track to the north. so that's also going to allow some heat to build in from the south. so we will start it off with the fog and low clouds for tomorrow morning. most of that clears back through the afternoon, except right there at the beaches. so this means temperatures start off here in the 50s as we head through your morning. and then as we roll through the afternoon, we're going to be back into the 80s
