"early today" starts right now. good morning, glad you're with me. i'm frances rivera. we begin with good news out of arkansas, where authorities caught up with a murder suspect after a manhunt that covered several state. stacy lee drake was arrested around 50 miles outside of little rock. the habitual criminal was wanted for up to four murders in

oklahoma and alabama. as priya sridhar reports, it's welcome news. >> reporter: a convicted felon and suspected killer is in custody. >> if you look at his criminal history, he was continuously escalating his violent behavior. >> reporter: before being arrested, police say 50-year-old stacy lee drake was last seen on surveillance video tuesday outside of an arkansas motel 6. arkansas state police, who are leading the investigation, say drake is connected to crimes across several states. in oklahoma, police say he's a person of interest in last week's murder and carjacking of phillip emerson. >> at least two people have been shot. >> reporter: he's also wanted in connection to two murders at a gas station about 200 miles away. in alabama, the tuscaloosa county sheriff is now revealing drake is a suspect in a murder they, too, are investigating.

they say he was there for a few weeks, using a fake name, when he shot and killed russell andrews last month. his son russell junior says he was beloved. >> he was a very kind and passion in the person. >> reporter: drake has an extensive criminal history spanning decades and multiple states that include convictions for robberies, carjacking and assault. he's off the streets and behind bars. >> i can sleep better at night knowing that he's not going to hurt anybody else. >> reporter: priya sridhar, nbc news. >> there was travel chaos in the tri state area after amtrak and new jersey transit trains in and out of new york city were halted for hours thursday. an overhead power outage at penn station caused mass cancellations. a brush fire in secaucus caused cancellations for new york and philly. delays continued for the rest of the day. frustrating commuters during this tough heat wave.

also the high temperatures are forcing amtrak trains to drive slower, which will cause delays for at least the rest of the week. we have new details about the first presidential debate. after a coin toss, former president trump will deliver the final closing statement when he faces off against president biden next week. this comes as a viral video battle intensifies between the campaigns. here's gabe gutierrez. >> reporter: the video went viral faster than usual. president biden at the g7 assumption in italy surrounded by world leaders, appearing to wander off before being pulled back. another camera angle showed the president was actually trying to greet skydivers who just finished the demonstration, but conservative media equipmently amplified the first angle. the biden campaign is calling it a cheap fake. what is a cheap fake?
