5:00 am
we are here to demand that she resign right now at 5:00, facing new pressure, the legal and political fallout after fbi agents searched the home of oakland major sheng thao. also, rising tensions in the middle
5:01 am
east ahead. we'll take you live to washington for more on the private meeting happening between the u.s. and israeli leaders over the war in gaza. plus, today is show your stripes day. the growing movement to help raise awareness about global warming and the state of our climate in crisis. this is today in the bay and this is friday morning. want to say good morning to you all? i'm marcus washington and i'm kris sanchez. laura garcia is off. we know that forecast is important with the weekend ahead. but first we want to start with mike because you have news that's going to impact the major crash and a major commute point. folks, let's take you to the east bay where we have this westbound 80. that's your commute direction coming off the carquinez bridge. it is blocked right now. all lanes are blocked because of a major injury crash. or i'll just say a major crash with injuries. just about willow avenue. so it's shy of highway four. the only good thing about this is the specific location, because traffic coming across off the carquinez bridge from vallejo,
5:02 am
down in toward, let's say, hercules, it's about 15 miles. you're going to have to double your drive here, because you have to come across the benicia bridge and loop back on highway four, or come down to six, eight and 24 and use that walnut creek interchange. so that's the longer reroute, folks. right now, traffic is very light. but again, coming from the north bay over in toward the east bay, you cannot directly access the bay bridge because of this crash blocking all westbound lanes. a major crash did actually require a couple of helicopters to land on the eastbound direction. paused traffic in that direction. both have transported folks away from the scene. hopefully they're getting attention. kari, that is the big deal. from the north bay in through the east shore freeway. all right. and as we take a look at our forecast for us this morning, we're starting out temperatures in the low 50s in san rafael. it's 58 degrees in san jose. one of the warmer spots right now with a light wind. and we're seeing these clouds overhead. once the clouds clear out, we're headed for some slightly warmer temperatures in the valleys. take a look at our highs in the east bay, up to 93
5:03 am
in our 91 in livermore and concord, 90 in santa rosa and 71 in san mateo. so a wide range in temperatures. as we move across the bay area, we'll talk about even hotter temperatures in tomorrow's forecast coming up in a few minutes. all right, gary, thank you. well, this morning we are still waiting for comment from oakland mayor sheng thao. this is after the fbi searched her home. this all unfolded as breaking news here on nbc bay area yesterday morning. the fbi not yet saying what they may have been looking for in that search or what agents were hoping to find. but we do know that this was one of four locations where agents executed search warrants so far, the mayor's office not commenting and instead referring all those questions to the fbi. this comes as the recall effort against her takes shape. our ginger conejero alsops. she's following this story this morning. she's going to have a live update for us in our next half hour. well, a private disagreement between close allies is going public. and now there's been a meeting
5:04 am
to calm tensions between the u.s. and israel over the war in gaza. today in the bay is alice barr is in washington. and alice, this comes as concerns continue to grow over another front in that war. yeah, chris and marcus, we are talking about concerns along israel's border with lebanon, where stepped up strikes back and forth, as well as heated rhetoric have been raising those concerns, while at the same time, u.s. and israeli officials are working to repair a public rift. did you get assurances on lebanon in washington, a meeting to lower the temperature between the u.s. and israel, bringing together two top officials from each country, even as the white house postponed a wider strategic meeting while pushing back on israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu, whose accusation that the u.s. has been withholding weapons and ammunition. the biden administration has publicly acknowledged it paused just one shipment of 2,000 pound
5:05 am
bombs out of concern for civilians in densely populated rafah. it's not a bottleneck. that's a policy review. other shipments of weapons have been moving regular to israel. the delayed meeting was set to focus on threats from iran at a time when iranian backed hezbollah militants and israeli forces have stepped up strikes against each other across israel's northern border with lebanon. we do have concerns about tensions along that border. we continue to encourage a diplomatic solution. the growing risk of a new front in the war comes as prime minister netanyahu faces mounting pressure at home, with protesters accusing him of leading a government that chooses their survival over the hostages survival. while some u.s. lawmakers raised concerns about his speech before congress next month, the video he released the other day suggests that he's coming to the united states to pick a fight, not to try to heal wounds, what i care
5:06 am
about is israel's security. the u.s. reasserting its ironclad commitment to israel's security while trying to prevent a wider war. a readout from that meeting between u.s. and israeli officials noted that, along with recommitting to israel's security. secretary of state antony blinken pressed for progress on a cease fire deal and getting more aid into gaza, all while preventing escalating the conflict any further in lebanon. marcus and chris? yeah, i don't think anybody wants to see that kind of escalation. thank you very much, alice. well, now to decision 2024. and when it comes to the upcoming presidential debate, you can already call president joe biden a winner. well, at least when it comes to the coin flip to choose the podium position since biden won that toss, he is choosing to take the podium. viewers will see on the right side of the screen. it also means that former president trump will have the night's last word. the 90
5:07 am
minute debate takes place next thursday. cnn is hosting in atlanta. immigration is sure to be a hot topic during that presidential debate, and new numbers show fewer undocumented immigrants are crossing the southern border during the month of may, there was a 9% drop in border crossings from april, according to us customs and border protection. border patrol agents had more than 117,900 encounters, so nearly 118,000 with undocumented immigrants crossing the southern border illegally. the dip in the numbers seen this year can largely be attributed to increased help from mexico in slowing migration. state regulators are fining cruz the maximum amount. this is allowable for withholding the information about an accident in san francisco. so it happened last october. this is when a driverless cruise car struck a woman after she was hit by another cruise car and ran over the woman, then dragging her several feet. well, the state cpuc has now ruled cruz will pay
5:08 am
$7,500 for each of the 15 days it withheld complete information about the incident, but the $112,000 fine is far less than that seven figure estimates first tossed around when the notice was sent out. commissioners also gave no date on a possible reinstatement of the company's currently suspended operations permit. you can check out our investigative unit stories about cruz on our website, nbcbayarea.com, and let's take a live look out our window over san jose, and we see some clouds there in the distance. it felt cool to start, but kerry, brace ourselves is what you're saying. yeah, it's going to be hotter this afternoon. mainly in the valleys, but definitely a wide range in temperatures across the bay area. we can see the low clouds over san francisco that will be slow to clear and keeping those temperatures lower. there but in san jose we can see our trend going from mid 50s. this morning and clouds to clearing out by late morning at 9:00 it is all clear and as we
5:09 am
move throughout the day, it's going to be mostly sunny as our temperatures make it into the low 80s by 3:00. and then starting to see those numbers coming back down here as we take a look across the bay area, it's going to be in the low 90s for more spots like morgan hill and 91 in concord. we're also going to see temperatures in the upper 80s. as you look at martinez, as well as novato for today. and now let's turn to our climate in crisis. you may see your social media feeds lighting up with stripes of blue and red as you scroll. today. it's all a part of a series called of show your stripes. it's to raise awareness of the impact of climate change fueled by carbon pollution. this unprecedented global warming is influencing an increase in both the frequency and severity of extreme weather events, including record breaking heat waves, severe storms, extensive droughts and destructive wildfires across the u.s, as well as across the world. climate warming stripes
5:10 am
powerfully illustrate the rise in average temperature. each stripe represents one year, and the blue corresponds to cooler than the long term average temperature, and the red shows the years that were warmer. created by professor ed hawkins, a climate scientist at the university of reading, the global warming stripes are a simple visual representation of the long term rise in global temperatures due to human caused climate change since 1950. globally, you can clearly see that warming trend, with the last two decades seeing an alarming record for heat for san jose temperatures have been also getting hotter. but since the 1970s, as the population grew rapidly, many people and the houses were built here. many people moved here. and that's when the houses were built. and that's part of the reason why a lot of us don't have central air conditioning. this underscores the urgent need to turn climate conversations into faster climate action. you can see how

climate change is impacting the bay area. go to nbcbayarea.com and click on the climate in crisis page. mike is showing us where we can fill up for less before the weekend. yeah, we'll just use a more simple look over here toward our gas prices are no longer on the state's best list. the one. fortunately, our best is still in alameda county, though livermore is 394 at diamond gas and mark on south front road. just under four bucks there, as well as very close to that $4 mark. a vallejo bond fare is 399 just at that one shop on sacramento street everywhere else in that county. in fact, solano county is above four bucks. san jose's best holds just over that mark at 409. that star gas on hillsdale avenue. and those reports come to all of us, from all of you. that's at gasbuddy.com. thank you for sharing that information. we get on to the roadways. we have an easy drive right now, except for one key spot, top of the screen. we still have that full closure. listen up folks, westbound 80.
5:12 am
all lanes are blocked at about willow and so anywhere after highway four toward the bay bridge is clear anywhere. coming off the carquinez bridge, you have the option of taking 780 and the long way across the benicia. but there's also san pablo avenue. you can see that it adds about another ten minutes for your drive. it's starting to build the volume, so we'll track that back to you. thanks, mike. a crowning the world's ugliest dog ahead on today in the bay. the contest underway this weekend in the north bay and the dogs that are getting gussied up, plus the high cost of a hamburger has fast food customers moving on up to b

look at menlo park and what to expect. it's mainly cloudy and temperatures in the mid 50s. it's going to be a cool start to our day, but eventually clearing out and temperatures warming up by noon. we're in the upper 60s. beautiful day ahead here. the heating up in the valleys. we'll talk about the range and temperatures across the bay area coming up, and this map looks just fine. but it's not. we're going to zoom in to this major issue for the upper east shore freeway coming off the carquinez bridge westbound 80 stopped all traffic just about willow avenue . there's a major crash there in the westbound commute direction. i'll give you your alternates and we'll see how things actually, you can see it right now, how things are stacking up, though, on one of those, which is san pablo avenue. well good morning. very happy friday to

5:20 am
feels like we're alone, all alone. why don't you stay? hey, take it after i was so. look the album dropped last night. the singer actually hosted a pop up at the midway in san francisco. i saw some video online and she was out there. a lot of fans out there that was pretty cool to see. and also, if you missed that last night, don't you worry, she's going to host a pop up shop in oakland today at studio shop. she's going to sign records greeting fans there, and that's going to happen from noon to six. i love when our artists get big, but not so big that they forget the little never right? those of us who aren't buying concert and i love that. all of this she's been doing with the valkyries too, and the promotions for that. yeah, yeah. so that's been really awesome to see. and you're wearing the valkyries color? absolutely. it's all planned, but we are going to have the kind of whether you want to dress for
5:21 am
that will change throughout the day. we're starting out cool, but it's going to be heating up and a little bit warmer than it was yesterday in spots like dublin. as we take a live look outside, we can see that people are up and out and about. now we are going to have a hazy sunshine today and then tomorrow a heat advisory going up for parts of the bay area. and when we get the hotter temperatures in the lower humidity, well, that elevates our fire danger. we'll have to watch out for that. looking at near surface smoke. so we've had the sites fire that's been putting up a lot of plumes of smoke in colusa county, and a lot of that has been kind of lingering over the north bay, where you see the green that's a bigger concentration of some of that smoke. also, moving into the east bay and really settling into the central valley. well, as we go throughout today, still some smoke and a hazy sky overhead as we see some slightly hotter temperatures developing. take a look at our highs for today. cupertino will reach 86 degrees. we're up to 91 today in in morgan hill and some low 90s
5:22 am
in concord and danville. 91 degrees there, 94 in antioch. while oakland will see a high of 77. and we'll be in the low to mid 60s for the coastline into daly city, while palo alto will reach a high of 82 and 70. in downtown san francisco, a little bit warmer in the city as well. but we're really feeling that heat in ukiah and clear lake in the upper 90s. while napa will get a bit of a breeze there and a high of 84. tomorrow is when the heat advisory goes into effect for all of these areas, mainly away from the inner bay and the coastline. so that's going to be where we see the range and temperatures and some of our inland areas as hot as 99 degrees for tomorrow afternoon. your outdoor plans. you want to make sure that you're also allowing for places for people to cool off. if you're going to be outside. and highs in the low 90s still on sunday, while we're going to see a big range in temperatures, san francisco will be in the low to mid 70s. mike still tracking that crash with a

major jam up for the commute. that's right. this is a really important part of the commute. we're very early, so we're already seeing backup into vallejo off the carquinez bridge. you're jammed up a lot of folks. you can see this san pablo avenue. look at that. we're seeing a lot more traffic traveling west because they're trying to get past the closure at willow. that's one of your alternates, and it's really jamming up already here. gauge. this is about nine miles. typically take about 15 minutes. now it's going to take you 20 perhaps 30 minutes. now coming down through the city streets. the other option is about the same amount of time. it's about three times as far, but mostly clear freeway. but look, 780 now starts to show some slowing. that's how the traffic one point ripples out to affect an entire region, including two bridges. now we're looking at approaching the bay bridge, though. there was a third crash in the area. it is cleared. just a little bit of activity on the frontage road, but west 80 does still feed the toll plaza with no backup. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. well, next here on today in the bay. nbc bay area response. thousands of people have had trouble with air travel

luxury san francisco high rise is getting after flooding, left the building with a bad rap. plus, i've been telling y'all that if there's any way on earth my father could come down here, that he would. a moving tribute to willie mays, the way the giants honored the baseball legend, and the show of respect from bay area fans at oracle park. this is today in the bay good friday morning. thanks for allowing us to be a part of your morning. i'm marcus washington and i'm kris sanchez. laura garcia is off. we want to start with a look at the forecast. meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we can expect. and we are bracing for some heat, though not quite today. not it'll start to ramp up a little bit today. tomorrow's the peak of the heat. so we are going to already start to feel those changes as we go into the afternoon for parts of the bay area, not all of us. so let's get a look at where we're starting this morning. nice and cool temperatures in the 50s with a light wind and our usual marine layer, but that's going
5:32 am
to quickly clear out for morgan hill at 8:00. we're already seeing much more sunshine and temperatures going from mid 50s to mid 60s. and of course of two hours. and then we see how fast it's going to be heating up into the upper 80s and briefly hitting the low 90s before those temperatures start to dip. once again. we will have a weekend heat advisory that starts tomorrow morning at 11 a.m, and some of our valleys are going to be in the upper 90s to 100 degrees. so we'll talk about those specific locations coming up. mike, you're tracking this major crash in rodeo. we just got a major update, kari, that they have cleared all lanes. all lanes of westbound 80 just cleared. there were major injuries reported for this crash. we'll still track that in the newsroom, but west 80 just reopened. that is just in time. the backup starts in vallejo and continues also san pablo avenue, the alternate surface street that's really starting to get packed in. now. there may be more folks heading to the benicia bridge. we see a little shift on 780, as well as down 680 as well, and that should
5:33 am
correct itself over the next half hour and time for a lighter friday, hopefully for later in the commute. but right now, upper east shore freeway coming off the carquinez bridge will recover as all lanes have just reopened. we have some smaller crashes, one near the richmond bridge toll plaza. we'll check on that. that was just added to the report. no detail from chp just yet. and the rest of the bay shows an easy drive. again, recovery off the carquinez bridge in toward rodeo. back to you. thanks, mike. well, this morning we are waiting to hear a response from oakland mayor sheng thao. one day, after her home was searched by federal fbi agents and other federal agents. it's a story we first brought you as breaking news. and today in the bay's ginger conejero saab live for us. outside of tao's home in oakland this morning. okay, so, ginger, there's now mounting calls for her to resign after all of what's happened lately. that's right. chris and marcus, community members who have been pushing for the mayor to be recalled, are now calling for her to resign. our crews were
5:34 am
here yesterday morning and throughout the day outside the mayor's home. we have not seen her. federal agents did search the mayor's home yesterday around six in the morning. they stayed for several hours. now we know there were multiple agencies executing search warrants, including the fbi, the irs and the us postal service. our cameras captured the moments that those agents loaded cardboard boxes and plastic bins into their vehicles. what is inside those boxes is still unknown. last night, organizers of the mayor's recall gathered outside her home, calling for her resignation. the oakland naacp is also calling on the mayor to step down. law enforcement sources tell us the mayor's home is one of four places where search warrants were executed in oakland, property records show. one property on skyline boulevard belongs to david duong, who is ceo of california waste solutions. it is a local waste
5:35 am
management company which holds oakland's recycling contract now. the family has ties to mayor sheng thao and both are referenced in a 2020 city ethics complaint alleging campaign finance violations. fbi agents also searched a home on view crest court that property records or those property records show that home is owned by andy duong, david's son. it's unclear how the warrants are connected or who is the specific target in these searches. here's our investigative reporter jaxon van derbeken with more on that 2020 ethics complaint and where that investigation stands. the allegations are that the son of the owner of the family, andy, allegedly was soliciting people to act as donors and he would allegedly reimburse them. and what happened, according to people involved, complained to the ethics commission and they started an investigation back in 2019. 2020 time frame. however
5:36 am
for a number of the players in this have flatly refused and have filed legal challenges to the authority to seize documents and even give statements to the ethics commission. so basically, the investigation had slowed to a crawl. now, again, we do not know if that ethics complaint in 2020 has anything to do with these searches or the investigations. now we have reached out to the mayor's office and they have directed our inquiries to the fbi. we'll see. we'll wait and we'll wait and see if mayor sheng thao will issue any sort of statement regarding this today. but for now, in oakland, ginger conejero saab, today in the bay, certainly a lot of people want to hear what she has to say from from her side. thank you so much, ginger. and make sure you stay with us with the latest out of oakland. of course, we're hoping to learn more throughout the day. you can stay on top of

any of those developments by going to our website, nbcbayarea.com. once you get there, just click on the link in the trending bar. new overnight police are investigating a deadly hit and run in east oakland. this happened around midnight on 105th avenue near june court. now police are telling our photographer on the scene a car struck someone who was walking and that person died on impact. right now, police are not confirming that information or if they have a vehicle description. four days from now, people in solano county should have a better idea about whether those plans for new city will be determined by voters. supervisors next tuesday are expected to hear from the registrar of voters about the california forever ballot drive. that's the group of silicon valley billionaires seeking to build a whole new city from scratch on land near travis air force base. the measure would rezone more than 17,000 acres to allow for development. right now, that's mostly farmland. supporters are pushing for this to be decided by voters in the fall. well, new this morning,

the owners of a san francisco luxury high rise. well, they're now trying to turn the page on their recent problem plagued past. most residents at 33, tehama moved out months after june 2022. that's when a ruptured water main flooded many of those units, and those tenants were told that they were not able to return for months. well, as the chronicle has been reporting, that building now rebranding with a new name, it is now called spera sf. it's also looking for new tenants because it is still less than half occupied now. prior to the flooding, the building's occupancy rate was 95. wow. well for baseball fans everywhere, a fitting tribute for the ultimate giant birmingham. i've been telling you all that if there's any way on earth my father could come down here, that he would. well, he's found another way. so you already stand to your feet. let him hear you. he's listening. oh, last night at

rickwood field in birmingham, alabama, the giants took part in an historic game honoring the leagues. this was also the stadium where willie mays, who died on tuesday, played his first professional baseball. the night was filled with magical moments, and it resonated all the way to oracle park, which opened the stadium so that fans could watch on the big screen. he was much more than just a baseball player. he was a legend and just somebody that people looked up to as a person. i remember the days going with my dad to candlestick and enduring the cold weather and just sharing a lot of memories there, and i wanted to carry on the memories with my son. as for the game, the giants staged a late comeback but came up just short, losing to the cardinals 6 to 5. well, now to a live look over at sfo this morning. this is where today all runways and taxiways will officially open at full service for the first time in months. so in january the airport closed one taxiway for
5:40 am
repairs with a planned july first reopening date. the closure led to some scheduling issues, with roughly one third of those flights impacted between 30 and 60 minutes. because teams finished the work ahead of time, the airport pushed up the reopening. i'll new this morning. perhaps it's not a big surprise, but you can expect a surge in summer travelers for the 4th of july holiday weekend. triple a is out with the holiday travel forecast, and more than 70 million americans are projected to travel by air, by rail or by automobile. that is a 5% increase over last year and 8% over pre-pandemic rates among california fans, air travel is showing the highest rate of increase. let's turn to meteorologist carey hall and carey bay area travel conditions. how they shaping up this weekend? it's going to be a nice weekend for all of the events going on. we have music on the square to kick off your weekend this evening at the redwood city courthouse. it's going to be nice out there. mid

opening of the coastline and able to travel all the way down past big sur, we're going to see temperatures even there warming up to 80 degrees on tomorrow and mid 70s for sunday. and napa is going to have some hot weather today. not so bad with some mid 80s, but we're up to 91 tomorrow. you want to find some shade and possibly some ac. mike, you are now tracking the recovery for the east bay. yeah that's great because it's friday , a lighter volume of traffic. so we've actually had pretty quick recovery after they reopened all lanes for westbound 80. once again, westbound 80 reopens all lanes after a major crash had the entire side of the freeway closed and traffic was backing up out of vallejo. now, recovery off the carquinez bridge, san pablo avenue may be actually the slowest to recover, so stay on the freeway. you see all this yellow now speeds just below the speed limit. all the way through hercules and heading down in toward richmond, but not yet actually reaching richmond, so it's not so bad. other folks were taking this alternate. it is still clear that's great news
5:43 am
. the ripple did not impact the benicia bridge really effectively. highway 37 is showing a typical build, maybe a few more cars are taking that route, but you can access the richmond bridge. oh, and this crash, it's opposite your main commute and on the shoulder. no major issues. that crash just cleared from the berkeley curve area and the rest of the bay shows a typical lighter friday commute back to you. thank you mike. all right. will the countdown to the summer olympics is on ahead for you this morning on today in the bay the last hurdle the track and field athletes face in their race to paris. we have been waiting on a ton of supreme court cases, and technically today is the last day to deliver them. we'll have the latest coming up. and i'm bob redell celebrating this country's history of space exploration. we're going to take you to a brand new exhibit here in the east bay. stand by. what? we have this coming up in a

take a live look outside in san francisco, our typical june gloom here. low clouds, some mist and drizzle and it's going to gradually start to lift as we go throughout the morning. but we're staying in the 50s through at least 11:00, making it into the low 60s at noon into the rest of the day. it's cool here,

but heatgo throughout the mornit we're staying in the 50s through at least 11:00, making it into the low 60s at noon into the rest of the day. it's cool here, but heating up in terms of campaign funding, but he's catching up. catching up? yeah, he's making a lot of progress. good morning. funding raising off of his felony conviction, marcus mentioned both of them hit windfalls this week. former candidate for president michael bloomberg gave the future forward pac supporting biden $20
5:48 am
million he donated to the biden effort back in 2020 as well, after dropping out of the presidential race, an heir to the mellon fortune. so that's banking and oil. donated $50 million to a pro-trump group. thomas mellon has also donated to robert kennedy jr. a new fox news poll shows pretty much same old, same old. technically, it's biden and trump swapping places. mr. biden is now in the lead 50% to 48% among registered voters nationally in that fox news poll, but it's within the margin of error, and the usual reminder that we don't elect presidents in a national vote. we do it state by state. former trump right hand man steve bannon asked a court to step in and keep him from going to prison, and the court said no. bannon has to report to federal prison on july 1st for contempt of congress. that judge in the florida case against trump, the one about the secret documents holding hearings today over a
5:49 am
defense complaint that special prosecutors are unconcerned national. it's a long shot. and the trump lawyers didn't complain about a special prosecutor assigned to joe biden . but the hearing will go on. the judge, eileen cannon, has been criticized for slow walking. that case. the supreme court two, criticized for slow walking a claim from trump that presidents should be immune from prosecution. the new york federal case against trump really rests on this decision on the high court. but the high court hasn't offered a decision. according to the court's calendar. today is the absolute last day to announce decisions before the end of the term. we assume that trump decision will come today, and if it does, critics can fairly say the court waited until the absolute last minute. it also waited until the absolute last minute in about 20 other cases as well, like another one we're waiting on today. should domestic abusers who have restraining orders

against them get their guns back ? the case, brought by a man accused of assaulting his partner and threatening to shoot her about half of murders by gun in the us are within the same household. other cases that we are waiting on include a decision about law enforcement and interfering with an official proceeding. it could affect january 6th convictions, a decision to over access to emergency abortions, whether sleep is a fundamental human right as it pertains to homelessness. and then you got the gun case and the really big one for future presidents, whether in a country where everyone is equal under the law, one person is above it. more than a dozen other cases as well. that's today. if the court keeps its current calendar, which at this point seems impossible, though in 1940 the court did hand down 17 cases in one day. we'll get the next round of decisions at 7 a.m. our time. i think you can safely expect a special report shortly
5:51 am
after 7 a.m, because marcus, there are so many important decisions to very much so. thank you, scott. 550 right now and the fierce competition for a spot on team usa continues close to 1000 hopefuls gathering at hayward field on the university of oregon campus for the start of the u.s. track and field trials. now eugene is known as track town usa, and this incredible venue here promised land for american athletes. really hoping to earn this spot on what many say is really the toughest team to make in the world. the fast track for making team usa for around 900 runners, jumpers and throwers begins later today. now, in order to get to paris, they're going to have to finish in the top three. nbc bay area will bring you exclusive coverage of the paris olympic games. it begins with the opening ceremony on july 26th. you know, kerry's going to be watching that because she did track in high school. oh did she? yeah, she sure did. oh, i'll take out to the field. well, this weekend a new exhibit in the east bay reintroduces us
5:52 am
to nasa's accomplishments in outer space. today in the bay bob redell joining us live from the chabot space and science center in oakland with a sneak peek. yeah. good morning, jim marcus and chris. you know, nasa ames in mountain view, the research center did have a visitor center at one point that shut down a number of years ago. well, they're reopening it. i here at the chabot space and science center in conjunction with the space and science center here in the hills above oakland, we've got ben burris. he's not only an astronomer here, but he's one of the guys who helps puts together these type of exhibits. good to see you again, ben. morning. good morning, what are we looking at right here, this is called adept, right, it is a concept. collapsible heat shield for a spacecraft. all right. the idea is, if a spacecraft has to take more than one heat shield, it can fold this one up and pack it along and then deploy it when they ames, i'm assuming, developed this technology. and did they test it in a wind tunnel? yes. this is a
5:53 am
wind tunnel model for dynamics of the prototype. i think anyone who has driven along 101 has seen these large what, you know, buildings that are housing these wind tunnels, do they still have wooden fan blades in there? they do. yeah. actually there's a picture here of like six giant fans, each one has 15 of these giant wooden wow blades to produce two and 300 mile an hour winds in their cavernous wind tunnel, and that'd be used for testing not only aircraft, but is the orion spacecraft, which is currently right. rocket models. real aircraft can go in their parachutes for landing on mars. all sorts of things. these things are. yeah. okay if we walk over here. i didn't know that we were going to be sending another rover to mars. i knew we were sending people, but there is a rover that's going up. and this is a mock up of it, correct? yeah. this is viper going. i'm sorry i said the moon. the moon. sorry. yeah. so viper is going to the south pole of the moon ahead of the artemis. astronauts will land there in in the next few years.
5:54 am
it's looking for water, we've already detected water ice and other volatile materials. and this will drill. it has a drill. it will drive around, go into the shadows. there's permanent shadows on the floors of craters on the pole, which allows ice to develop over thousands of years. okay, so they're going to go see what the nature of that water is. and quickly, if like 30s, i wanted to show this. these are robots that float in the international space center, a space station. and they have propulsion, correct? yeah. so the blue one here, astro, the light blue one. astrobee, moves around with a little fans. so but the idea is the concept is they are developing robotic helpers for astronauts and to do tasks on spacecraft. and these work. yeah yeah, yeah, they've been very successful. okay, testing artificial intelligence, giving them tasks to do, and. yeah. hey. thanks, ben. nasa fest this weekend here at the chabot space and science center in the hills over oakland. i've been coming to this place for years to do reports. if you haven't been up here, it's
5:55 am
actually a very fascinating. if you love science, you love space. and that and that sort of thing. marcus kris, residential scientist, is geeking out about it. i can't wait to go. and it's indoors, which is a good yeah, a good option this weekend. kerry. absolutely. you want to look for something with some ac, especially in the valleys where it's going to be hotter. let's get a look at our highs for today. going up above where we were yesterday. with our temperatures up to the low 90s in the tri valley. and we're looking at some low 70s in spots like san mateo. so there will be some places, even across the bay area, where you can find some natural air conditioning, but it's going to be 93 in fairfield for today, 84 in napa and 77 in oakland. so that's one of those cool spots. whether you're indoors or outdoors, you're going to have some nice weather, but it will be slightly warmer tomorrow. even there up tomorrow. even there up to 84 degrees. and we're looking mostly at some low 90s for fremont and a san jose, upper 90s for morgan hill and livermore, as well as fairfield
5:56 am
will hit those highs up to 100 degrees, only slightly lower on sunday. so tomorrow we are going to have that heat advisory quick spike in temperatures for the valleys. but then it starts to back off as soon as sunday and monday we're back to some more seasonable weather with some upper 80s in the inland areas. won't be as warm in san francisco tomorrow. there we're up to 74. mike, how's that east bay commute going? great. look at that. the snow back up at the bay bridge the reason carrie's asking folks if you didn't know is because westbound 80, that would be here and was completely blocked over there. just off the carquinez bridge coming through rodeo. there's still recovery that has to happen, but look no longer slow across the span highway 37 holding up steady there. and we do see 780 with no more slowing for the alternate route. again. west 80 all lanes cleared from the earlier major crash. there we have the rest of the bay, which hasn't really been affected by this friday because it is friday. it's lighter back to you. but you said it's friday. i like that. thanks, mike. well, happening now, state regulators have shot
