politics. this this kind of stuff seems to happen all the time. right now at six, facing new pressure, the legal and political fallout after fbi agents searched the home of oakland mayor sheng thao and working to cool tensions ahead. we are live in washington with more on the private meeting happening between u.s. and israeli leaders over the war in gaza. plus, today is show your stripes day, the growing movement to help raise awareness about global warming and the state of our climate and crisis. this is today in the bay a good friday morning to you. thanks so

much for starting your friday leading into the weekend with us. i'm marcus washington and i'm kris sanchez. boy, we had an early start with some crashes this morning. things are looking good there. things are looking hot in your department. yes, for first weekend of summer it's going to be a hot one across much of the bay area. absolutely and we're starting out with a few low clouds across the bay area. we are going to have warmer temperatures in some of those spots, like dublin with the hazy sunshine and then the heat advisory kicks in for tomorrow. but it's only one day it starts to come back down on sunday. and of course, with the high heat and the low humidity, there will be an elevated fire danger will have to monitor. now we're looking at a lot of clouds this morning in oakland as you're stepping out the door. it's in the low 50s and we'll see those temperatures quickly warming up as the sky clears. but here we're looking at some nice weather with a high of 77. as you make your way over toward fairfield, it's 93 for today, and you'll also start to feel some warmer temperatures for the

south bay, with morgan hill reaching 91 degrees. so we'll talk about the hottest day that's coming our way. and mike, you're tracking some slower sensors. yeah, i was i was tracking some slower sensors. well, still, i guess, but there's a much less slowing here. westbound 80 has had a great opportunity to recover. remember last hour we had a full closure because of a crash right around willow avenue. there may still be some activity on the shoulder, but all westbound lanes are clear. we still have slowing. as we talked about, the slowest to recover is san pablo avenue because we had just started to see a lot of traffic build up on that major surface street getting off the carquinez bridge. everything's better out of vallejo all the way through hercules, and then just slowing actually coming out of rodeo and pushing down into richmond. not really a major factor anymore for the rest of the bay. shows that friday lighter commute. the south bay never really showed that first slowing for 101. we'll track it back to you all right. thanks, mike. well, this morning we are still waiting for a comment from oakland mayor

sheng thao. this is after federal agents searched her home yesterday. now, this all unfolded as breaking news right here on nbc bay area. yesterday morning, the fbi not yet saying what may have prompted that search or what agents were looking for. but we do know that it was one of four locations where agents executed those search warrants so far, the mayor's office not commenting, instead referring all questions to the fbi. this comes as a recall effort against her takes shape. our mayor has failed us. we are here to demand that she resign. and we will continue our coverage at 630 with live report from today in the bay ginger conejero saab. there are still a lot of unanswered questions about the gunfire that shattered juneteenth celebrations in oakland wednesday night, and we know that there still are no arrests. now, the shooting sent hundreds of people running for cover. police now say at least

to get this friday started. one thing i am concerned about is our air quality. we've had a hazy sky, a little bit more of that smoke coming in from the sites. fire and colusa county that's been putting up massive plumes of smoke, and a lot of it has been concentrated around that area in parts of the north bay. as we go into the afternoon, it's going to look very hazy. and some of that smoke coming in, especially in the east bay. so you do want to limit your time outside, but we're probably doing that anyway because it's going to be hotter there. with fairfield's high temperature today of 93 degrees 91 in concord, livermore and in morgan hill, and we'll see a high of 90 today in santa rosa looking at tomorrow. that's the peak of the heat. all right, 100 degrees in livermore and in fairfield. those are the hottest spots, but we're not far behind with some upper 90s and san martin, as well as morgan hill, low 90s in san jose. but we do have places where you can go and

cool off along the coastline. half moon bay will only be in the low 70s, and we're already starting to cool down on sunday. so the heat advisory in effect for these areas for tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m, brentwood is going to see that spike in temperatures, but then quickly coming back to the mid 90s for sunday into early next week. it's still going to be warm, but we're not looking at as much of the heat for the weekend, and san francisco is keeping it nice and mild with mid 70s there as they reach the peak of the warmth tomorrow. mike, you're looking at the bay bridge toll plaza. yeah, we're just starting to see folks waiting now, getting in toward the toll plaza area and some slowing across the span shows up on our sensors. so that's, you know, friday a little bit later, drive highway 37 showed a typical start there. and it held steady out of vallejo. now i talked about traffic being metered, not necessarily at the toll plaza, but it was more over here in westbound 80 through pinole and into richmond, just the bottleneck of traffic that was held back at willow after that crash cleared. it took a while to recover, and now the

waiting to hear from oakland's mayor, sheng thao. one day after her home was searched by federal fbi agents. it is a story we first brought you as breaking news. now, today in the bay's ginger conejero saab. she's live outside of that home. and ginger, there's now mounting call for her to resign. that's correct. good morning. marcus and kris community members who were originally pushing for the mayor to be recalled, are now calling for her resignation. now, the mayor has not responded to those calls for her resignation. she's also not addressed the fbi search that took place at her home yesterday morning. our crews were here yesterday and throughout the day we have not seen her. but as far as the search is concerned, federal agents were here. they started their search around six yesterday morning and they stayed for several hours. we know there were multiple agencies executing search warrants, including the fbi, the irs and the us postal service. our cameras captured the moments that those agents loaded

cardboard boxes and plastic bins into their vehicles. but what is inside those boxes is unknown. last night, organizers of the mayor's recall gathered outside her home, calling for her resignation. the oakland naacp is also calling on the mayor to step down. law enforcement sources tell us the mayor's home is one of four places where search warrants were executed in oakland, property records show. one property on skyline boulevard belongs to david wong, who is ceo of california waste solutions. it's a local waste management company which holds oakland's recycling contract. now. the family has ties to mayor sheng thao, and both are referenced in a 2020 city ethics complaint alleging campaign finance violations. fbi agents also searched a home on view crest court. that property is shown to belong to andy wong, david's son. it's unclear how the warrants are connected or who is the specific target. now here's our investigative

reporter jaxon van derbeken with more on that 2020 ethics complaint and where that investigation stands. the allegations are that the son of the owner of the family, andy, allegedly was soliciting people to act as donors and he would allegedly reimburse them. and what happened? according to people involved, complained to the ethics commission, and they started an investigation back in 2019. 2020 time frame. however over a number of the players in this have flatly refused and have filed legal challenges to the authority to seize documents and even give statements to the ethics commission. so basically, the investigation had slowed to a crawl. now, again, we do not know if that 2020 ethics complaint has anything to do with this search. these searches we have reached out to the

mayor's office. they have directed inquiries about the search to the fbi in oakland, ginger conejero saab, today in the bay. thank you. ginger so as ginger just mentioned, that recall effort does continue. and joining us now is cal state east bay ethnic studies professor doctor jennifer kim on tran. thank you so much for joining us. so what will a federal investigation like this one now mean for that recall effort in your opinion? good morning. thank you for that question. it's as we continue to have very limited information to go upon. this fbi raid has definitely fueled more questions and mistrust with the current government, given that, mayor sheng thao has not commented on the recent raids in her home and, even more so and more concerning the shootings of, juneteenth a few nights ago. so
6:36 am
you know, we were already hearing about that recall effort. we already know that it was qualified for the november ballot. so now, following this, this search, we are hearing calls for her resignation. what do you think is going to happen next? this this call for the resignation is just coming out of this of brewing chaos resulting from the broken government that we see driven by ego and career politicians. and so this isn't going to wait, even if we find more information . and given that over 40,000 signatures have been collected for the recall of mayor sheng thao. and so as the longer we wait to hear from the administration, then the less attention we will have on the more severe and urgent issues in our cities, around crime, around homelessness and the concerns around budget cuts. and so go ahead. i'm sorry. so this is just one thing that's happening in mayor tao's life. obviously,
6:37 am
you know, she has, you know, the personal response to the search of her home, but she also has city business to conduct. so how long can we wait before hearing from her? this is this is why the organizers for the recall and as you mentioned, the naacp in oakland is calling for resignation because we need to continue to operate. and up until now we have so many distractions. that seems to have no leadership right now from from the mayor to the city council. given that city council has been rated rated by the fbi as well. all right, doctor tran, thank you so much. from cal state east bay. looking lovely out there. thank you so much. we will continue to follow this story. we will get the latest sent right to your phone. if you download our free nbc bay area app. well, a new warning for ev owners. get familiar with your car or get locked out, or maybe even locked in the national

in 2020 as well after dropping out of the race, an heir to the mellon fortune. so that's banking and oil donated $50 million to a pro-trump group, thomas mellon has also donated to robert kennedy jr. a new fox news poll shows pretty much same old, same old. technically, it's got biden and trump swapping places in the poll. mr. biden, now in the lead 50% to 48% among registered voters nationally. but that whole thing is within the margin of error. and the usual reminder we don't elect presidents in a national vote. we do it state by state. former trump right hand man steve bannon asked a court to step in and keep him from going to prison, and the court said no. bannon has to report to federal prison on july 1st for contempt of congress. that judge in the florida case against trump, the one about the secret documents holding a hearing today over a defense complaint that special prosecutor laws are unconstitutional. it's a long shot. and the trump lawyers
6:46 am
didn't complain about a special prosecutor assigned to joe biden. but the hearing will go on. the judge, eileen cannon, has been criticized for slow walking this case. the supreme court, too, criticized for slow walking a claim from president trump that presidents should be immune from prosecution. the new york federal case against trump really rests on this decision from the high court, but the high court hasn't offered a decision on. according to the court's calendar, today's the last day to announce decisions before the end of the term. we assume the trump decision will come today and if it does, critics can absolutely fairly say that the court waited until the very last minute. it also waited until the last minute on 20 other cases as well. another case we're waiting on today. should domestic abusers who have restraining orders against them get their guns back? the case, brought by a man accused of assaulting his partner and threatening to shoot her about
6:47 am
half of murders by gun in the united states are within the same household. other cases that we're waiting on, a decision over a law against interfering with an official proceeding that could affect some january 6th convictions, a decision over access to emergency abortions, whether sleep is a fundamental human right as it pertains to homelessness. and then, of course, the gun case and then the really big one for future presidents, whether in this country where everyone is equal under the law, one person is above it and it doesn't. more other cases today, if the court keeps its current calendar, which at this point seems impossible, though in 1940 the court handed down 17 cases in one day. we get these next round of decisions in less than 15 minutes. i think you can safely expect a special report shortly after seven because chris, there are so many decisions due and it just takes a minute to figure out what they all mean for the rest of us. thank you so much,

scott. so a legendary cal swimmer is literally backing into his third straight olympic games. ryan murphy downright won both the 100 and 200 meter backstroke events at the team usa swim trials in indianapolis yesterday. he also now becomes the first swimmer to win both of those races at three straight us olympic trials. so exciting to watch. nbc bay area will bring you exclusive coverage of the paris olympic games that begins just one month from now, with the opening ceremony on july 26th. well, you know what? this weekend, a new exhibit in the east bay reintroduces us to nasa's accomplishe moments in outer space. today in the bay's bob redell is a kid in a candy store. he is at chabot space and science center in oakland with a sneak peek. this one looks pretty cool. bob you know, for a number of years you could go to visit nasa ames in mountain view, and they had a visitor center so you could see the type of technologies that they were
6:49 am
developing, but that has shut down, but they have since reopened. it will be opening this weekend. here to chabot space and science center, which is collaborating with nasa here in the hills over oakland. and you're going to see things like this, i believe. is this the volatile investigating polar exploration rover, also known as viper? if that's what you're thinking, you are 100% correct. ben burris here with the chabot space science center. hey, good morning to you. yeah, i love the acronyms. me too. nasa acronyms are great. and what will this do? this is a mock up of a rover that's going to be going to the moon. yes so viper is going to the south pole of the moon to look for water and other volatile materials frozen in the bottom of permanently shadowed craters. and it'll be drilling and then analyzing and then sending that information back here. absolutely what do we have right here? this is another the ten sigrity super ball bot. another something that just rolls right off the tongue. right. well, and speaking of rolling, yeah, this is a concept for a rover without wheels. so
6:50 am
it's designed to deform and flop and change shape to bounce, roll and climb over obstacles. okay. and that was developed at nasa ames. but it's a prototype. it hasn't been used yet. or has it a prototype? they haven't used this kind of technology yet in planetary exploration, but we could do a lot where wheels can't. anyone driving up and down 101, you know, nasa ames one for the blimp hangars, but also the large buildings with the vents. and those are the wind tunnels that are still and used today. and people might be surprised at some of the blades are actually made of wood. yeah. in fact, the biggest, the blades and the biggest fans and the biggest wind tunnel, ames are old wood. they were made at a ship making company in england. you know how to build wooden things, right? but they're very strong. there's six fans in the big wind tunnel, and each fan has 15 of these blades. that's amazing. hey, ben, thank you very much. the nasa fest has. it's called to commemorate the opening of the new nasa ames visitor center here at the chabot space and science center.
6:51 am
as this saturday and sunday, you can go to chabot space. org if you want more information here at the chabot space and science center in oakland, bob redell today in the bay. all right. thank you so much, bob. i saw a little piece of the heat shield. and we're going to need one of those this weekend. can i go get some of those or those gigantic fans to help cool things off? you know, that's one of the things we can do to find something air conditioned and also enjoy time with the family. so i love that. and we're also going to have a wide range in temperature. so it's really dependent on where you are. hence our microclimates. we're starting out with some low clouds here. it is all clear in walnut creek. and we've seen that typical marine fog along the coastline. but one other thing we're dealing with is wildfire smoke. and we've had a lot of smoke coming up from colusa county, going down into much of the north bay. and we're also going to see this impact, the way the sky looks. and our air quality as well. if you are
6:52 am
smelling the smoke, you want to limit your time outside and we can see the darker greens here indicating where we could have higher concentrations of that near surface smoke moving through for today and into the evening. temperature wise it's a little bit warmer, so we're kind of staying inside a little bit more anyway because the temperature in los gatos will hit a high of 94 today. we will see a light northwesterly wind. and in morgan hill 91, they're even hotter for antioch with those temperatures topping 94. but if you're in oakland, it's still pretty comfortable. we're going to see a high of 77 and only low to mid 60s along the coastline in redwood city today, up to 79 and 70 in downtown san francisco, 90 in santa rosa. while the coastline will be in the 60s. so the weekend heat ramps up tomorrow. heat advisory in effect for these areas away from the coastline in the inner bay. and that's when our temperatures will spike up to the upper 90s a few triple digits coming down a few degrees
6:53 am
on sunday and upper 80s for much of next week. all san francisco will warm it up to 74 here, and even cooler for sunday with highs in the upper 60s. mike, you're seeing some slowing now in the south bay. yeah. the reason that's the headline, kari, is because it's just started and things were very light up until just five minutes ago. now we see slowing starting back here around tully story, getting up here towards 680 and also up toward oakland road. nothing major, but it is there. we do have a disabled bus that is northbound 17. just as you're passing by highway 85 right near that interchange, there's a gore point where you split off between the lanes and in that area off of the main roadway. there is a bus there. i don't think it's a full bus. there are no passengers reported. we're just tracking that as well. really. things are pretty sparse here on the peninsula. great flow of traffic. it will continue to build, of course, the tri valley and the dublin interchange all moving very nicely here. a little slowing for hayward and your typical spots with light slowing throughout the east bay as well.
6:54 am
back to you. thanks, mike. happening now. state regulators shot down a bid by at&t to get out of its commitment for landline service in california. the company is the state's default landline provider and claimed that there really wasn't enough demand anymore. last month, an advisory judge rejected that plan. yesterday, the cpuc agreed, arguing that households in the bay area with spotty cellular reception would be among those that would suffer. and ahead, a final look at our top stories here on today in the bay, including facing scrutiny, the growing calls for oakland mayor sheng thao to resign this one day after the fbi searched her home and other properties ahead. what we know about that investigation in

it is. 657. welcome back. we are moving you forward with a look at our top stories here on today in the bay. we are still waiting for some sort of comment from oakland mayor sheng thao after the fbi searched her home yesterday, it unfolded as breaking news on nbc bay area. yesterday morning, the fbi is not yet saying what might have prompted that search or what agents were looking for, but we know that sheng thao is property was just one of four locations where agents executed search warrants. so far, the mayor's office is not commenting and is instead referring us back to the fbi. it comes as the recall effort against her takes shape. well, new overnight police are investigating a deadly hit and run in east oakland. it happened around midnight on 105th avenue near june court. police telling a photographer there at the scene that a car struck someone who was walking. that pedestrian died on impact. right now, police are not confirming that information or if they have a vehicle description and some major green light this week,

this is for waymo's robotaxi expansion into the peninsula state regulators yesterday upheld a decision in march to allow waymo to expand into san mateo county. they also approved business operations for a section of los angeles also this week, peninsula state senator dave cortese withdrew his measure to give local entities their own control over self-driving rules and regulations. that bill never made it out of the committee phase. cortese says that he'll try again next year. all right. it's been friday light for the later part of the morning, and a warm up is headed our way. yeah, we're going to have temperatures really spreading out across the bay area. some of our inland valleys today up to 91 degrees even hotter tomorrow and sunday. still pretty warm. but then temperatures coming back to something a little bit more normal for the end of june, while san francisco's keeping it cool here. only 70 today, the warmest temperature will be 74 and 60 as the fog returns throughout the rest of the forecast. yeah, we'll look at
7:00 am
kris talked about friday light. it's a little bit less light here at the richmond side of the bridge towards san rafael, and more slowing for the east shore freeway to be expected, but again, very smooth drive throughout most of the area. contra costa county leaving alameda county. this is the bay bridge and we've actually seen traffic get lighter here. that's great. and we've seen a little bit of fog, but we'll welcome that. i think forecast later on. oh yeah. only we could bottle it for later. today's show is coming up in just a few moments. however, you can always get your local news as we continue today in the bay on roku, pluto and other streaming platforms. live at eight. the growing concerns over a new covid variant, plus an all new way to fly to work. archer aviation's chief growth officer joins us to talk about the company's future. if you thought it was hot, just wait. >> yeah, those brutal temperatures are not over yet. good morning. it's june the 21st.
