[ cheers and applause ] ♪ ♪ the story tonight. sheng thao attorney is speaking out after the fbi searched her oakland home. the bay area is still abuzz about the story making national headlines, not just the mayor's home. agents also searched a campaign donor and supporters home along with his business. nbc bay area's thom jensen is outside mayor sheng thao home. and tom, we're hearing from her attorney, but

still no sign of the mayor herself. that's right. good evening. mayor tao has not returned to her home since the search here early thursday morning. she also has not returned to work at city hall. and there are questions tonight about when she'll return to city hall and what all this means for the city of oakland. a day after the search of her home, a former federal prosecutor, now private attorney, is speaking on mayor sheng thao behalf. she's the mayor of oakland. she's an elected official. she's hiding from nothing. her lawyer says mayor tao was blindsided by what happened thursday morning. the mayor never received any sort of inquiry or any sort of information regarding the existence of this investigation. in the meantime, mayor tao has not returned to work. but a spokesperson for the city says nothing has changed at city hall. all departments are staffed and responding to the needs of the public. i think that it's important that our community know that the services that they expect from us are still being delivered. another former prosecutor who now works

as a private attorney and a legal analyst, says a judge had to see some evidence of possible crimes or they wouldn't have signed off on search warrants at multiple locations. what was very clear from what occurred is that this was a very coordinated investigation by several federal agencies, former santa clara d.a. steve clark says court records like search warrant affidavits will likely be sealed in this case, and it's anybody's guess if or when any charges would be filed. it really depends on what they're looking for, how long this process will take, and what information do they already have? the fbi conducted simultaneous searches at the headquarters of california waste solutions and the homes of its ceo, david duong, and his son, andy duong, a district 12 congressional candidate and president of the vietnamese chamber of commerce, says the duong's have contributed greatly to the city and the vietnamese community. the family have been really supportive of causes that are

building opportunities to create a more robust and prosperous economy for all of us to thrive in. the duong's also contributed to candidates on both sides of the political aisle, including to mayor tao's campaign and last year, david duong's vietnamese business association hosted a trip to vietnam, which tao and port of oakland members participated in. but port officials say they reimbursed the association for all of the mayor's travel costs and its employees travel. tran says she hopes investigators do their job thoroughly, but also fairly. i think that anyone, including the wong's, you know, including the donors of other elected, a lot of other campaigns need to definitely be assessed, but also given a fair trial, a presumption of innocence. yes. but even her closest allies admit all of this cannot be good for the troubled mayor of oakland, who was already facing a recall in november, even before her home was searched.

mayor tao's attorney says she is cooperating with investigators, and she will make a public statement about all of this next week. we're live in oakland. thom jensen, nbc bay area news, breaking news in mendocino county tonight, an earthquake. people in the north bay might have felt. the usgs says a 4.5 magnitude quake struck just after 845 tonight. the epicenter near laytonville, about 45 miles north of ukiah. so far, no reports of any damage or injuries. and our other top story tonight, the heat advisory going into effect tomorrow. chief meteorologist jeff ranieri is here. jeff, let's talk about it. and we do think a few spots are going to be reaching up to 100 today. it did get warmer, but nowhere near 100 in santa rosa with 82. concord did get up to 90 just a little bit above that average. so what we're going to see happen tomorrow is this area of high pressure keeps the storm track to the north, and we're going to get that hot air moving in from the desert

southwest. and it looks like it's going to be widespread enough that the north bay, east bay and south bay inland valleys are in this heat advisory temperatures ranging 95 to 100. so it's a quick one day event here for us. humidity 15 to 25. a little bit of a breeze out of the southwest, 10 to 20. we'll also increase that fire danger. so it's going to be some pretty rapid warming as we roll through tomorrow morning. 50s and 60s to start. but look at this by 11 a.m. already 84 by 1 p.m. 94 real quick. we're also tracking in a real time earthquake map the earthquake activity to the north. we again have that earthquake. we're tracking here, the 4.5 in mendocino. we'll have any more updates on this as needed throughout the show. all right jeff, thank you. a close call in the oakland hills as things heat up. firefighters scrambled this evening to put out this car fire that spread to the hillside along 580 near golf links road. fortunately they got it under control before it threatened any homes crews spent

much of the evening monitoring hotspots in contra costa county. firefighters quickly put out a fire burning very close to some homes in pittsburg. the fire broke out on santa maria drive, west of stoneman park late this afternoon. crews put it out quickly. it burned just one and a half acres before they had it contained. it could be a busy weekend for firefighters as temperatures rise across the bay area, and you can track the heat in your neighborhood with our free nbc bay area app. just point your smartphone right now to that qr code on your screen, and it'll take you right there. well, the man accused of kidnaping and assaulting the husband of former house speaker nancy pelosi has been found guilty again, this time in a state trial in san francisco. david apap found guilty on all counts. the attack happened back in october 2022 at the pelosi's san francisco home. paul pelosi told the jury he woke up to depape standing over him, asking where nancy was and then saying he would have to wait for her. in the minutes that followed,

paul pelosi called 911, leading to a moment right here caught on police body cam video when depape can be seen hitting paul in the head with a hammer. depape has already been convicted on federal charges for the same attack and was sentenced to 30 years in prison. during the state trial, he faced additional charges of false imprisonment, residential burglary, threatening a family member of a public official and aggravated kidnaping. we are truly all grateful for mr. pelosi's physical recovery and hope that this verdict can allow them to rest a little easier as they move forward, knowing that mr. depape will be held accountable and has been held accountable for what transpired on that horrific night, the pelosi family released a statement after the verdict came down. it read. speaker pelosi and her family remain in awe of their pop's brave brie, which shone through again on the witness stand in this trial, just as it did when he saved his own life on the night of the attack. it goes on to say the pelosi family is grateful for the kind thoughts and prayers

they continue to receive. new at 11. if you're planning to go to lake fest in oakland this weekend, expect more officers around the event. the oakland police department says it will be out in force after violence broke out during the city's juneteenth celebrations. several roads you can see right here will also be shut down around lake merritt for public safety reasons. the majority of the closures are along bellevue avenue. that red right there on the map. and this is going to be going on from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. this all comes after 15 people were shot near lake merritt. merritt wednesday night. police say fights broke out during a sideshow. so far, no arrests have been made in connection with the shootings. one person is recovering after a shooting in san francisco's soma neighborhood. it happened around 230 this afternoon outside a cycle gear shop near 11th and norfolk police arrived to find the person shot. they were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. so far, no arrests have been made. when will they stop? tonight? san jose's mayor has a message for

anyone thinking of participating in a sideshow this weekend. prepare to go home in handcuffs, the mayor making it clear his city has a zero tolerance policy for the wild and dangerous stunts, like the one we saw last saturday near santana row. nbc bay area's jocelyn moran joins us in studio with more from mayor mehan. jocelyn. yeah, one of the ways that the city is showing that these types of incidents and sideshows do not happen again is by really showing that you will not get away with it and you will be held accountable. it's illegal in san jose to participate in a sideshow tonight. mayor matt mahan making it clear illegal sideshows will not be tolerated in san jose. if you come to san jose to participate in a sideshow, you will go home in handcuffs or on the bus because we will arrest you. we will impound your vehicle and we will prosecute you to the fullest extent of the law. this week, san jose police arrested three people in connection to last

saturday's sideshow at santana row one that happened in the middle of the day when many people were out and about, and one that involved damage to a patrol car while an officer was inside. sideshows have become all too common throughout the bay area, including in the south bay. in april, there was a series of them in mountain view, near stanford and in menlo park, and in january this video shows a large group surrounding a car doing donuts near the sap center. then, in october of last year, san jose police responded to several while spectators set off illegal fireworks. two cars crashed, but last weekend's video showing people stomping on a police car and breaking the windshield while an officer was inside put even more attention to the type of behavior that won't be tolerated. we've already made three arrests and we have many more to come, and it's expected to be a busy weekend in the south bay. one of the copa américa soccer matches will be at levi's stadium in santa clara saturday afternoon, expected to bring thousands of fans. and tonight people were already out and about at shopping malls as we head into

the weekend, mayor mehan says officers will be patrolling. our officers will be out there. i mentioned we have our automatic license plate reader network that is up and running with now about 250 cameras. we have that air support unit and we did try to reach out to san jose police. they were not available for an interview tonight, but they did encourage the public to report any suspicious or criminal activities. gia. jocelyn. thank you. new at 11 a lululemon heist and high speed chase ended with four suspects in jail tonight. they're facing felonies for stealing $10,000 worth of athletic wear. it started around 230 yesterday when san mateo police got a call about a theft at the hillsdale shopping center. witnesses there say three people grabbed a handfuls of clothes and ran outside to a white subaru outback, took off. officers chased the car all the way to san francisco, but backed off when the driver became erratic. they managed to catch the thieves a few blocks away and were able to reclaim the

stolen clothes. tonight the suspects have been booked into san mateo county jail. now to decision 2024. it's a crucial weekend for the candidates. president biden and former president trump are preparing for next week's presidential debate. the first one of this race. neither candidate has debated in four years. the stage is set for thursday's showdown in atlanta. president biden winning a coin toss, picking the lectern on the right side of the stage. former president trump will deliver the night's final closing statement. both will be aiming to persuade undecided voters. nbc nightly news correspondent dasha burns spoke with two voters in battleground state pennsylvania. both voted for nikki haley in the primary. you voted in the pennsylvania primary for a candidate that wasn't in the race anymore, right? why? i just felt it was important that my voice was heard. and i think to really send a message that there are others out there like me, you know, that, would prefer an alternative to president trump.

video from the city's coal valley neighborhood. the animals seem to be minding its own business. while coyotes aren't that unusual in the city, this sighting on frederick street definitely turned some heads. san francisco animal care and control is reminding us it is currently birthing and pup rearing season for the coyotes, so they can be more protective and assertive. don't feed them. that's the advice. and keep your dogs on a leash and report any aggressive or strange behavior to the city's coyote hotline. well, south bay musician is at a loss tonight after someone stole his prized trumpet. musician jorge rodriguez is part of the popular mariachi estelar. he also founded the silicon valley mariachi foundation. his goal is to teach any child who wants to learn to play an instrument for free. the group held a big fundraiser on father's day at the santa clara county fairgrounds. jorge says when he put his trumpet to down to talk to some guests, someone walked away with it. what are we teaching our kids? on father's day that it's okay to steal

something that doesn't belong to you. nevertheless an instrument, a trumpet, something that's used for many musicians as a tool, as a stream of income, you know, a source of revenue, a way of living. okay, so jorge says he filed a police report. friends have opened a gofundme account to buy him a new trumpet. for the first time in more than two decades, the indy car series is hitting the track at laguna seca, adding more sizzle to the race. the new team debut of a teenage driver from the bay area. here's nbc bay area's anthony flores. yeah, he's one of the new fresh faces in the indy car series. check in on nolan siegel racing was not in his family background, but nolan siegel was hooked after getting behind the wheel for the first time at eight years old. my dad thought it would be fun to put me in a go karting summer camp at sonoma raceway, and absolutely loved it and just spiraled out of control from there. and here i am this

weekend, the 19 year old palo alto native will be racing in his own backyard when he competes in the firestone grand prix of monterey, making this race even more special. it marks his debut with his new team, aaron mclaren. to make my debut with aaron mclaren at my home event is really special for me. it's just a very positive way to start and really excited for the weekend. siegel is coming off a monumental victory as part of a winning effort at the recent 24 hours of le mans lpm two series to do it for the first time was a very special experience and then to win on top of that made it, you know, truly one of the highlights of my life so far. so really, really cool weekend and glad that that led to this. with a big win already on his resume, he now faces high expectations every time he starts the engine, along with the pressure of only being 19 and this being his first race with arrow mclaren, nolan also has to overcome the challenge of the track. they don't call this place the corkscrew for nothing. the raceway is an 11 turn, two plus

mile road course featuring a one of a kind turn in motorsports with an elevation change comparable to five and a half stories. the on track portion of this is going to, you know, be what it'll be. and i think that the challenge this weekend for me is going to be learning how the team functions and finding my place there. he's not that far removed from taking his driver's license test, in case you're wondering, even though he's a professional driver, he was anxious when it was time to step on the gas pedal. i knew that if i failed that driving test, i was never going to hear the end of it. so that was a very nerve wracking experience for me. his test in the indycar series comes sunday at laguna seca in monterey county. anthony flores, nbc bay area. so young. incredible 19. i know right i know wow okay. one thing we're also wowing is the fog and the heat. tomorrow yeah, it's like it's one two combo effect here for us across the bay area. so even though we have that fog on the coastline, the heat moving in from the desert southwest is

going to be so strong that we have heat advisories and some heat warnings stretching from chico all the way down to los angeles, also including parts of the bay area. let me get you more details on this right now in your microclimate forecast. and here we go. tomorrow morning, 7:00, we have those areas of fog, of course, at the coastline, low clouds spreading inland. but here's the best part about your weekend. if you want some sunshine, we should see a lot of this clear back right here by 9:00 in the morning and then through the afternoon. we keep that sunshine inland. but if you're headed to the beaches, do watch out. we could have some of that typical summer fog kind of hanging around san francisco and also our beaches, especially if you're right up against the coastline. morning temperatures going to start off on the chilly side. we're down to 58 here for the peninsula. not as bad for the south bay, though. at 63, san francisco 53 and the north bay right there at 55. we're in for a solid 10 degrees warm up on these temperatures. so down here in the south bay it's going to be toasty. but notice the trend. you're closer to the bay a little bit of a breeze off the

water. we'll have us at 92 in cupertino. get away from that bay breeze. you're up to a hotter 97 in morgan hill. same thing here for the east bay right up against the water. 78 in oakland, 80 for hayward. head over to those east bay hills up to a hot 100. antioch 99, livermore and 98 in danville at the coastline. downright cold, 63.5 moon bay. redwood city, 86. i really think some of the most perfect weather is right here across the peninsula tomorrow. get a little bit of everything. and for san francisco, 75, in the mission up to the marina, 66 and right here through wine country, santa rosa to napa, we're coming in with low 90s. okay. i want to show you something else i'm watching right now. and that's remnants of what is tropical storm alberto. now, it is going to get caught up in some of this hot weather here as we head through sunday, what we're looking at is that moisture moving into arizona and southern california for maybe some thunderstorm chances. right now, it's dry for us, but we're definitely going to keep a close eye on it. so we have that heat as we head through tomorrow. but

triathlon to take place in the sun, as well as the opening ceremony. but last week, elevated levels of e coli bacteria and indicator of fecal matter were found in routine samples collected at several sites along the river. experts say unsafe levels of fecal matter in water where athletes swim could cause gastrointestinal disease. the mayor of paris and french president emmanuel macron have pledged to take a swim in the suns waters to prove their cleanliness as. well, good news if you're planning to take a trip this summer. the cost of travel is dropping this summer is absolutely the best summer for domestic and international travel post-pandemic. we've seen a full recovery in prices across flights, accommodations and rental cars. okay, for example, the cost of plane tickets are down 6. that's almost $20 compared to last year. the price
