july 26th. brought to you locally on nbc by tri counties bank, california's local bank. where the locals down the street . the neighbor you come to for advice. a nest egg for the golden years, a loan or a new account for that growing business. what started in chico 50 years ago has taken us all around california to providing big bank lending power and high tech service while keeping our relationships personal. we're still the locals down the street, no matter where your street might be. damian trujillo: hello, and welcome back to "comunidad del valle." i'm damian trujillo, and a reminder that the qr code you see at the bottom of your screen is that-- so that you can register to vote. it takes you directly to the secretary of state's office in sacramento, you can register to vote here on "comunidad del valle." no more excuses, latinos need to vote.
9:31 am
today on the show the mexican american business association and zabor del valle, on your "comunidad del valle." ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ damian: and begin with a great venture by the san francisco 49ers into mexico. with us on "comunidad del valle" is sofy navarro. she's with the 49ers edu. sofy, welcome to the show. sofy navarro: thank you so much for having me. damian: thank you for being here. tell us first of all about 49ers edu, what is that? sofy: yeah, so the 49ers since 2014 and bringing the stadium to santa clara has had an education program where we bring k through 8 students to learn about science, technology,
9:32 am
engineering, arts, and math through the game of football, primarily serving title 1 schools. damian: well, my children went through the program here in-- at the levi's stadium, but now you're taking it abroad. tell us about this partnership with cabo san lucas. sofy: yes, so we've had the amazing opportunities since we gained rights to a market in mexico to partner with the tourism department of los cabos, and we put on a clinic called a day with the 49ers, where we were able to bring 49ers edu and nfl mexico flag football to do some skills and drills. damian: why is it important to branch out and to reach regions like los cabos? sofy: it's really important for us right now. our goal is to connect deeper with the latino community and specifically in mexico, since they're our neighbor, right next door. so, these partnerships let us really bring the game of
9:33 am
football more accessible to the students and to the parents as well as provide a community service. damian: and you also did this prior to the game, you all had-- that the 49ers had in mexico city. your team was there for a week before that doing the stem and the steam education. tell us about that. sofy: yeah, so two years ago the 49ers had a game in mexico city, and prior to the game it was really important for us to reach out to the community and do a give back. so, we were able to write-- invite over 200 students to come and do two days of camps very soon similar to what we did in los cabos where we taught a stem lesson, and then they were able to practice their skills and drills and really get familiarized with the game of football. damian: talk about the player involvement, or maybe the alumni involvement, because you do have some big stars who team up with you on this. sofy: yes, the star power was amazing this last time here in
9:34 am
los cabos. we had diana flores, which is a gold medalist and world champion of flag football, as well as hall of famer patrick willis, and both of them were there supporting the kids. and i think it's really important for the kids at that age to see legends and people out doing-- big stars like this supporting the work that they do, not only supporting them as athletes, but as students as well. damian: and i bet that the-- even though you are the educators in this, you come back to levi's stadium and to santa clara having learned something, i bet, from those kids or the students and the families in los cabos. sofy: yeah, i think every time we do this, especially abroad, we learn something new, whether that is how to connect better with our spanish speaking community through an american game or really just understanding the landscape of those communities and what they connect to from a
9:35 am
learning perspective. this time we particularly had the opportunity to work with older kids, which typically, again, like i mentioned, we were k through 8, so it was really fun to see how we can adapt our lessons and our activities to really fit their needs. damian: well, i selfishly want to go on your next excursion, because i love cabo san lucas, and so maybe that's a great story for us to follow you. let's show you some information, it's called the 49ers edu. they do provide stem and steam education for students. well, now, not just in bay area, but also across south of the border. there's a website for more information. we'll be back with sofy navarro here on "comunidad del valle," stay with us. i'm not gonna do anything flashy to announce... ...my munchies under $4— the items you crave like tiny tacos or french toast sticks for less than four bucks! but i will do something explosive. [fireworks and car alarms] at jack, every bite's a big deal! welcome to jack in the box!
9:36 am
getting 2 of my sausage croissants with a freshly cracked egg for just $5.50 means you've already won the day. add a sweet cream iced coffee for an extra buck with any breakfast item between 6 and 11 a.m. at jack, every bite's a big deal. welcome to jack in the box! damian: we're back with sofy navarro here on "comunidad del valle." she is with 49ers edu, and you mentioned, what is the end bite's a big deal. goal here? because i know that there are some huge 49ers fans in mexico, when i went there even 20 years ago.
9:37 am
a lot of people were wearing 49ers gear. what is the end goal in reaching out through 49ers edu? sofy: i think it's definitely creating a bigger and deeper impact with our latino community, hopefully creating a new avenue for fans to participate with us aside from being able to give back to the community in a way that they can take not only the game, but some of the things that we teach around the different themes of science, technology, engineering, arts, and math with them for the rest of their lives. damian: how do you tie both together, the game of professional american football and stem, is there a connection or you just happen-- is it the brand that lures them in? sofy: i think one of the most important things of everything that we do, whether it's at stadium or abroad, is really looking at the game and finding all the ways that a normal fan or student or parent wouldn't think about that are related back to the game.
9:38 am
so, we specifically focus on different careers and people off of the field so people feel like they can be a part of the game without being a player on the field. and so, to give you an example of one of our activities, we asked students to put together a light circuit to light up a scoreboard. so, a huge part of the game, especially the fan experience, is looking at the scoreboard, but it takes engineers, it takes all these gameday production professionals to be able to make that happen and provide that fan experience. so, i think that's one of the ways that we definitely incorporate science. damian: and we all know that south of the border football-- the other football-- is the most popular sport in the country. is it a growing sport, is american football a growing sport in mexico and other parts of latin america, maybe? sofy: yes, it's definitely a growing sport in mexico, as well
9:39 am
as other places in latin america. i think right now through these clinics and through the exposure of the different teams in latin america we're seeing a big spike, and it's really interesting to see how big and amazing and dedicated these fans are in latin america. damian: and you mentioned the mexico superstar in flag football, what a great ambassador she is, right, to the sport itself and being that she has a passion for it, she's-- she could be your ambassador in mexico. sofy: yeah, so diana flores is amazing. she's definitely passionate about sharing the message of flag football, and i think one of the biggest things is she's a woman ambassador in a male-dominated sport, and the rise of girls flag football is here, especially with california that just passed it as a varsity sport. so, i think that's an amazing ambassador that really carries on the message of community, sportsmanship, and just equity
9:40 am
across the sport. damian: yeah, i met miss flores at the super bowl. she was there at the media row, and it was-- i mean, absolutely an amazing person to represent the sport itself. are we gonna keep doing this? are we gonna keep going to cabo? is that our commitment to the 49ers? sofy: yes, as right as of right now we're committed to, again, deepening our connection to the latino community. we're finding more ways that we can activate in mexico. so, definitely looking for more opportunities and hopefully something in the near future. damian: all right, any final thoughts before i let you go, sofy? sofy: no, just thank you so much for having me and sharing this message. i think it's really important for the latino community to know that we're here and we're representing the bay area and the 49ers, not only at home, but abroad. damian: all right, sofy navarro, thank you so much with 49ers edu for being on the show.
9:41 am
sofy: thank you. damian: yeah, and no, the nfl, the entire league is committed to the latino consumer, if you will. they realize where the market is, and they are catering to that. well, there, back to the 49ers, there is a website for the 49ers edu program. find out more about their stem programs throughout this summer over at levi's stadium. up next here on "comunidad del valle," latino vintners from napa valley and from here in the south bay, right here in our show, next, stay with us.

9:47 am
you're going to provide. gloria: that we're so proud to serve the community, we've been 20 years in business, and not just food, but providing, like the other lady was saying, some healthy food and regular food. and it's a pleasure for us to be there providing some of the food and helping. damian: all right, no, it's-- and it's a great gesture by everyone involved. again, maria, july 13 at cet, it's a great outdoor space, a great tardeada event again. maria: yes, it's gonna be a really fun time. please buy your tickets. they're $75, and the event is gonna take place on july 13 from 6 to 10. and, of course, it's gonna be at cet, and we look forward to seeing everyone come and enjoy the food, the wines, and the good camaraderie. damian: i mean, and for that price, like you said, you're enjoying the food and the wines, but that money is an investment,
9:48 am
that you mentioned that a little earlier, it's an investment in the community efforts out there in silicon valley. maria: it's absolutely an investment. our future are the children. they are our future, and of course we have to invest in them before anything else. i do wanna say that i'm so proud to say that recently one of our members wrote a grant to the offices of sylvia arenas, and we got the monies, and we're gonna start a youth entrepreneurship program. things like that, actions like that that we do is what brings so much pride to the community and to us, because we are trying to just empower our young children to be great

future leaders. damian: and just to reiterate, maria, these are vintners in napa valley, the mava folks who are bringing the top shelf wines for us to taste. maria: yes, the best. so, latinos coming together with wine and good music and good food is the best. damian: yeah, no, and, you know, and this is kind of like the mini cosecha, because the mava folks in napa have their big cosecha celebration, it's the same thing, in the coming weeks. this is kind of like for us to get a taste of it here. it's a small taste of what the-- what's happening in napa valley. maria: absolutely, i'm promoting them because they are such-- they're so accomplished in what they do that we have to promote them at the same time that we, you know, promote our future generations. damian: and i see gloria is gonna leave in a bit, hang out
9:50 am
with us for a second, gloria. i know you have a lot of work to do, still haven't-- we have one more second, and we'll come back to you in just a little bit. gloria: no, no, i'm free. damian: all right, there you have--gracias, if you have more information, if you want more information, there is a website on the screen for sabor del valle, also for mava over in napa valley. we'll be back and wrap this up with sabor del valle here on "comunidad del valle," stay with us. ♪♪♪

9:52 am
what you helping others. damian: that's perfect, that's a great way to put it, and that's what this whole event is all about. and, maria, i mean, there's no better way, right? you pair these delicious wines with the appropriate food that the dona gloria is gonna be bringing, and it-- for $75, wow. maria: it's gonna be a really good time for a really good cause. damian: yeah, and again, the music, there's always great music. we'll have that again this year up in the quad area of cet. maria: yes, and there's gonna be dancing and meeting new people, making new friends, and promoting, like we said, our local artists, our vintners, our restaurant owners. it's all about promoting each other and bringing each other, lifting each other up, and at the same time for a very good cause. damian: and a lot of us can't really make it up to napa valley to enjoy this for ourselves. this way you're bringing napa valley to, again, to silicon valley.
9:53 am
maria: isn't that a great way to get to meet those vintners? they come to us when we can't go to them. damian: yeah, no, absolutely. well, senoras, thank you so much for being on the show. thank you for what you're doing for the community as well, gracias. gloria: gracias. damian: gracias. and again, we're gonna share that information once again, july 13 is sabor del valle at cet, there is their website for more information. i also included a website for mava, because mava is having their cosecha celebration as well over in napa valley. well, if you want to get ahold of us here on "comunidad del valle," you can follow me on instagram. my handle is @newsdamiantrujillo. i have included my email address there for more information, and there is a qr code for you to register to vote, one more time, takes you directly to the office of the secretary of state. we thank you once again for sharing a part of your sunday with us on "comunidad del valle." we're gonna leave you with-- we're gonna leave you with a little bit of "love the way." we'll see you next week. ♪♪♪
